I booked two private baths for 1 night and added a late check out for one of the rooms when I pre registered. From start to finish the process was simple and easy. Before arrival I received a text with a link for everything I needed to know to get to our rooms. The rooms are nicely decorated, comfortable and superbly clean. High high ratings for cleanliness. More of a hostel rather then a hotel. Unless you book a room with a private restroom. Make sure you read the room situation before you book. Some rooms have a restroom while others don't, you'll have to share a communal restroom down the hall. Location: Great! University way is literally down the street (walking distance) and is full of bars, restaurants, shopping, and convenient stores. Transportation: Local bus stops everywhere, I jumped on the 44 bus and got around town with no issues day or night. Have change, the cost is $2.75 and they don't give change. Make sure you ask the bus driver how long your one pass is good for since they don't expire per ride. Room: Good size for one or two people but no more. Includes comfy bed, desk w/chair, a wall of windows and blinds, a tiny sink and mirror, wall heater, and a huge mirror for selfies :) The bed had clean sheets and pillow cases, the room was provided with towels and hand towels, which were all white and clean. -The only down side was No refrigerator or microwave, and the carpet was a dirty and stained that I walked around the room with my shoes on or I put a white robe on the floor to step on. Restroom: Rooms with no restroom have a shared bath down the hall. They keep them as clean as possible and fully stocked. The shower have shampoo, conditioner, and body wash available and the potty's have toilet paper, a plunger, and bleach but no toilet seat covers. Bring slippers to wear in the shower and your won toiletries and you'll be set. WiFi is included, room has a light fixture with a fan and a wall heater. No parking, only paid parking in the area. Check in/out: Super easy and convenient. Two emails with all the detailed information and you're set to self check in and out. - They do have staff working so if you ever need anything you can ring or call the number at the front desk, I didn't see anyone my whole stay till the last day and they were very nice and friendly. The staff at this establishment is friendly and nice to work with, but I'm not a fan of management. Their parking directions are vague and misleading. I parked in the wrong place and got a ticket. I wrote to management about it and "Michael" told me that he'd taken care of it and that it would be waived, but the ticket was still showing up on impark's website. I wrote to Michael again and he blew me off so I had no choice but to pay it. He misled me in a way that could have damaged my credit. That guy sucks. read more

This hotel is directly across from the university campus, and is located right in the U District, which is a great area for young travelers. I adored the room I stayed in- it was charming, clean, spacious, had a private bathroom, and best of all, it had a large farmhouse window seat. During the one drizzly day I was there, I sat on the window seat and watched the rain while doing crossword puzzles. It was the definition of "cozy." The hotel also allows free luggage storage until 9:00pm after you've checked out, which was extremely convenient. I was able to leave my luggage, explore the city for the final day, then return and make my way back to the airport. During my time in Seattle, I decided to stay at two separate hotels to experience two different areas of the city, and this was the second hotel I stayed at, the first being Green Tortoise Hostel across from Pike Place Market, which I also recommend highly. If you're a young traveler, I recommend splitting time between downtown Seattle and U district, they're two very unique areas and I enjoyed my time at both. As far as nearby shops and restaurants go, I was (pleasantly) overwhelmed with my options. Ugly Mug Cafe and Bulldog News Cafe were the two coffee places that I recommend, and Cafe on the Ave is a great place for a cheap midnight waffle. I also thoroughly enjoyed Al's Music and Games, a CD store nearby, and Red Light Vintage & Costume for thrifting. It was a quaint and charming place, I would absolutely recommend it to anyone looking to stay in the U District area. read more

This more like a hostel than a hotel (as Danny T stated), but we read all the reviews before booking and we were very pleased with our stay. No frills but we preferred to spend more money on food and entertainment since we were there just to crash at night. We had a super late 2:30 am check in, but it is self check in and we were emailed the instructiosn with no problem. Our room was an end unit premium queen, which means it had a private bath with a door. The room was really tiny, about 2 ft max all around it, but it was very comfortable. On the 3rd floor there is a loft lounge with a kitchen where you can prepare your own food and store food in the refrigerator. It's an honor sytem and no one touched our food. Up there are sofas and tables to enjoy the books and tv . They also provide coffee,tea and water in the morning. We loved the location being steps from U of W, being close to the rail lnk to downtown , and near lots of restaurants and shops. The place has a cool vibe. We were happy and rested afte spending 2 nights there. Last, I beleive that the new owner has been slowly making improvements, which is why more recent reviews are much better. read more

The College Inn is my Go-To for when family or friends come to town. It's only gotten better over the past few years. I set my sister up recently there and noticed that there had been a lot of renovation work since my last visit a year or so ago. Place is really looking great! Hat's off to the owners for making these improvements. I spoke with the owner and he said they are adding private bathrooms in some of the larger guest rooms soon. There is no AC- shared Bathroom was weird and it felt like we were sleeping outside as noisy as it was. The walls are so thin you hear everything from the halls to the rooms around you and from rooms above you. It sounded like someone was bouncing a basketball for hours until late above us. No elevator just hoof yourself up the stairs with your luggage to the fourth floor to check in. Staff was non-existent. We will not be staying again for sure. read more

My family and I stayed at the College Inn from April to June of this year while our house was being remodeled and we needed to head back to Seattle for our kids' return to in-person school. We stayed in the Loft Suite and it worked great for our needs. The space is a little quirky (but most places that are over a 100 years old are). It's on the top floor, so it's heavily gabled, and even though there are no bedrooms to speak of (it is a LOFT) there are two twin beds (a must for our kids), one large bed for the adults, a private bathroom and a full kitchen. There is enough square footage such that our kids were able to set up separate work stations for the couple of days per week they had to do school remotely. Rob, the owner, was very responsive to anything we might need (e.g. the toaster broke--he changed it, we needed an extra work table--he provided it, the days got warm--they provided extra fans). I don't think it ever took more than a day or two to fix or address anything we pointed out. Rob and his crew were respectful of our personal space to a fault: nothing was changed or addressed until we gave the ok. Communication with Rob and everyone at the College Inn was easy, painless and prompt. So, I have to say that I am a little surprised at some of the negative comments I have read here. We rented the room sight unseen because we were out of town at the time, and it was exactly as described on the College Inn website and exactly as Rob described on the phone when we made the reservation. No surprises. There are some minor negatives. There is no elevator (so, if you don't like stairs maybe this is not the place for you). There is no air conditioner. Sometimes noise can be an issue, both inside (the Loft is located close to the lounge where younger, college age, guests sometimes don't respect quiet hours--this happened 2 or 3 times during our stay) and outside (the College Inn is in the University District and sometimes street noise--from loud people, I should clarify--can be a little loud). Parking can also be an issue, but not more than any other metropolitan area in the US. Overall, I would highly recommend the College Inn. We would stay there in a heartbeat. As it happens, we may have to, since our remodel has been delayed again and we are likely to need a place to stay for the return to school. read more

We've been here twice, but now I noticed they charge more for less? I used to kinda like it besides the first problem below: We stayed before obviously because it was cheaper, but the so called Europe style does NOT make up for how dingy some rooms can be. Our sink didn't even work, worse yet was one room's fire alarm kept squeaking ALL NIGHT, and I think the fan was squeaking too. They don't bother to use the funds to update ANYTHING. This honestly could be a nice place, but they also seem to let people smoke in it, we had to change from a quieter room with smoke, to a noisy room with semi truck traffic and lights (so disrupting). The breakfast sucks so much too, like it won't fill you...at all. It's so cheap looking and we didn't really trust how fresh it was. It's also true they don't make you feel very welcome and seems troublesome to fix things. I don't mind going up a few steps to save money, but at least update the rooms, fix the place...and don't even dare to raise your prices to justify it---it's your basic business incentive and job to take care of your business and not scam people. You can still have cute euro looks with cleaner spaces and things that work. Actually, standards in Europe are WAY better I hear for everything, so get on it, "euro" style hotels pretending to be hip instead of being clean----you got a lot of work ahead of you. read more

Part of it is me being a pretentious hipster and being like "Oh, nothing could compare to Euuuurope" (imagine me putting an unnecessary accent over the 'u'). The other part is that when something, be it a bakery, bar or hotel, slaps that label on, it means they're trying to cover for something. It's like calling a tiny shit apartment "cozy". In this case, it's masking the fact that it's a hostel for $80. Yes, you get a private room. Sure, the room is nice. But you share a bathroom (a kind of crummy one) and their "breakfast" is the same toast and jar of jam you'd get at a $10 crash-shack. Honestly, it's about location. I stayed for a conference and if I had another conference here I'd probably stay again. Particulars aside, if you are up for an adventure this hotel is for you. We booked this hotel pretty last minute and were worried about the reviews. To be honest we were pessimistic about how it would be. However we are happy to say this hotel is charming, well placed and inexpensive. The hotel is down the street for a fun downtown area that is very walkable! With lots of food options and bars. The furniture is old and sometimes falling apart, yet fits the mood of this place well. It is very European in its design. Beds are very comfy with great pillows. Windows opened out to let in the air and show off a great view of the city. We say on our window bench and just looked out for a while. Wifi does suck. No other way to say it. But we got Netflix fine, and on vacation what else do you need? Bathrooms: yes they are communal. However it is separated by sex. With stalls for toilets and doors on the showers. I was very worried about this. Yet after a day I was fine with it. It's very much like a dorm situation. And not really an issue. Breakfast is simple. Toast, bagels, fruit, fruit bars, coffee and juice. For free, it's a good spread. Nothing fancy but not bad. There are also places within walking distance that you can go to. For the price range that this hotel falls in I would give 5 stars. But for hotels in general, and in this city 3. So to sum it up, if you are up for an adventure and a story this place is for you. read more

The location is awesome, steps away from the fun on University Ave and a short walk to the heart of campus. As others have noted, the amenities in each room are different so make sure you reserve what you want ... if you need a private bathroom, you will pay more. We rented the suite on the fourth floor, and it was one of the best rooms we have ever rented -- lots of room, a great bathroom, full kitchen, and lots of light. The host was awesome, and helped us out when our daughter left her laptop behind -- he was really amazingly helpful throughout our visit. We plan to return whenever we visit UW. read more

What an interesting place. To get there you walk around the building and down some steep dark stairs into this speak easy type dark hole in the wall. The building was quaint. An alright establishment for the price I paid. However I got locked out of my room while going to use the bathroom (since it's communal by floor), so I went to the front desk area (which is in the building next-door) to ask them to unlock my room, since I couldn't reach anybody by phone. Only to find out the front desk was closed, and I couldn't get back into the building since my room key didn't work. I was locked outside, by myself, in cold Seattle in the middle of the night. Ringing the buzzer on the door did nothing, I pounded on the front door until thankfully a guest came and opened it about half-an-hour later. Someone who works there also heard the banging. Asking me what it was about. Told him I was locked out of my room and he opened it without question and said "I trust you." I don't know what I would've done if someone hadn't come to help me. No keys, no money on me. I cannot believe they don't have procedures in place for something like this. read more

I don't normally write reviews, but I am now, because I do not want anyone else to fall for this. THIS IS A SCAM. The place is ridiculous. THERE IS NO BATHROOM in the room. This is NOT A NORMAL hotel. DON'T WASTE your money here, go somewhere else just as budget-friendly unless you prefer to live like a college student in a dorm. Their Expedia booking page was set up to make you NOT realize that - they make the room photos look super nice, and then after booking the place, and reading the itinerary / booking confirmation again, I was like, "Wait, why does it say shared bathroom? What does that even mean?" Who would even think to doubt Expedia / a hotel and even think about shared bathrooms? Even 2 star motels' units have their own bathrooms? No one I know has ever had to share a bathroom at a hotel. You should call this a glorified hostel, because this is what it is. Checking the very last photo on the booking page, I was unpleasantly surprised to see that they in fact have a dingy shower stall that reminds one of a showers at a public swimming pool, very stark contrast to the nice photos of the rooms. WHO in the world pay this much money to use a dingy shower stall? You might as well book an Airbnb - at least even those shared bathroom are nicer and cleaner. Unfortunately Expedia (both agents I spoke to also admitted they've never ever heard of a hotel with a shared bathroom) and I both couldn't get the hotel to respond and give a full refund. So I was stuck paying the first night of a hotel I will never set foot in - they originally refused to give me the second night back even though the Expedia confirmation clearly says that they have to do that for the following nights. My husband and I stayed for three nights while visiting our kids who attend the university. While it's not super fancy and you do have some stairs to climb, it's exactly as advertised. The place was clean and the beds were super comfy. It was a short walk to the light rail. We took it to see the sights in downtown Seattle one day. The location was perfect for lots of dining options and public transportation. Everyone working at the college inn were super friendly and service oriented. The rooms were nicely decorated, clean, and provided your basic needs. There are no elevators...you get a lot of steps in which we did not mind. We would definitely stay there again. Having enjoying the pub downstairs many nights in my UW time, I decided that I would just stay right above it on my next Seattle visit. My room was well laid out and clean. It was the smaller of two room sizes, but plenty for two people. The bed was really comfy. Not too much noise from the bar or adjacent rooms. The guys bathroom was clean enough for me, but the ladies shower was not well-lit enough (or something along those lines) for the person who shared my room. Clearly there are exacting standards at work here! I will add...I have stayed in a few shared-bathroom hotels (the Mosser in SF, a place downtown in SLC), and the CI was as clean as any of them. So: no worries, particularly if you are a guy. Worst thing was waking up at 7:55 am to feed the parking meter. read more

I stayed here about a month and a half ago while I was in Seattle for the weekend accompanying my brother to an audition at UW. We initially reserved the room because it was close to campus and we weren't sure how to get around, although we did end up renting a car. I was worried about parking because of what other reviewers had said, but maybe the time of year we went just wasn't that busy. We managed to find parking on the street both nights close to the hotel. The only bummer was having to wake up early on Saturday to feed the meter. I would advise when you first check in to leave your bags downstairs before you know where your room is because the office is all the way at the top on the fourth floor. The continental breakfast wasn't anything special - juice, coffee, cereal and pastries. But you can't complain if it's free! The bathrooms are communal, which I know is bothersome to some people, but I didn't find that to be a problem because I've stayed at places like that before, and the bathrooms were clean. And there was never anyone in there when I was using it. The hotel provides bathrobes in the rooms to walk back and forth to the bathroom. Next time I go to Seattle (which will be soon since my brother will be attending there for school) I'll probably chose to stay in a hotel downtown instead, but nothing about my visit here was displeasurable, and I'd recommend it to anyone who is looking for somewhere cheap to stay in the area. read more

This is a pretty nice place to stay if you want to be within walking distance to the UW. It's an old building- 1909. It has cool character and its own charm. Freshly painted inside, and the rooms are very clean. No funky odors. The shared bathroom was clean and never crowded. They did run out of shower gel and shampoo for a day or so, but it was refilled quickly. The first night I was on the second floor facing the street, next to the neon sign that advertises the College Inn. Two things: the light from the sign shines through the blinds all night long, and is a bit difficult to ignore. A room darkening shade would have been nice. Second, the street noise with the windows open was brutal. It was warm with no AC ( but fans) in the room, so I had to choose between closing the windows and tolerate the stuffiness, or open the windows and deal with the noise. Admittedly it was the start of the academic year, so shenanigans were to be expected. But the 2 am skateboarders and late night revelers outside my window was a bit much. I mentioned this to the caretaker and they immediately switch me to the other side of the building, which was much quieter. They were very gracious and accommodating. Had they not done this, I don't think I could have made it there four nights. I think when it gets colder and the windows remain closed, this is probably a nonissue. Parking can be difficult. There's off street parking you can renew with the parking app, but you can't park in the same spot/street for more than a day until they won't allow you to renew your time. Plus, max time for parking is two hours until 8 pm-8am when parking is free. Setting your timer every two hours and shuffling your car every other day can be a hassle. Tip: ask the College Inn caretakers/owner to reserve one of the parking spots on 41st street, just a couple of blocks away. There are only three spots in a parking lot reserved for the College Inn, but it's sooooo nice to leave your car there and not worry. It's like $12/day. I was able to snag one by asking several times when a spot opened up. I think you can reserve in advance. Finally, you might want to opt for the private bath if available with the room. While the community/shared bath is ok, it's probably worth the extra money for the privacy and convenience of your own bathroom. I'd definitely stay here again, knowing which rooms to select and where to park. Thanks for the great stay! read more

You can't beat the location at the price. That said, this hostel - not hotel/B&B - leaves much to be desired. The first thing I should note is how hot it was in the summer We are graduate students and were in Seattle for a conference admittedly during a heat wave (85-90 degree highs), which is unusual for Seattle. The old building has only a ceiling fan to cool the rooms, which made it extremely difficult to get to sleep at night and stay asleep. It may have been easier to get to sleep if we could keep the windows open, but the tremendous amount of noise outside made us want to keep the windows closed. I would strongly suggest not staying here if the weather will be hot during your visit. The shared bathroom situation was okay. If you're under 30, or enjoy reliving the experience of a dormitory, then you can handle the shared (sex-segregated) bathrooms. Still, each bathroom has only one stall and two showers for an entire floor, which was a bit tight, especially when everyone wants to use it in the morning. And while I saw cleaning staff in the bathrooms each day, flies were a problem due to lack of screens. We had to change rooms three times over our stay, so we got to see how unstandardized the rooms are. I'm not speaking about the charming variation you'd expect in a 100+ year old building. I mean that our first room had no working surface (i.e. desk) but had a robe so you didn't have to walk naked down the hall to the bathrooms, but the second room had a desk (which was broken) but no robe. Our third third room was good - it had both a robe and a stable desk - but the towel meant for showering was a hand towel, so I had to pilfer a proper one from the housekeeping cart. All that said, I was happy to find no evidence of bed bugs in any of the mattresses, which had been a problem in Seattle for a while. The whole outfit felt rather haphazard and disorganized. The people in charge of check-in and other services were all college students, who, bless them, didn't really know what they were doing. It would have been nice to have an 'real' adult whose career was hospitality to turn to with questions/complaints (like, for example, when we discovered the apple juice that had been served on several mornings for breakfast had fermented). This building does not have a front desk where you can just go see the manager; the manager, another student, when present, is closed up in a room on the top floor, which doesn't exactly scream 'come to me for help' like a front desk would. The most obnoxious thing for me was the fact that the information booklets in the rooms are not up to date. For example, the password for the weak and inconsistent wi-fi printed in the information booklet did not match up to the one found on our key fob, and, one Sunday, we decided to sleep in and get breakfast at 9:30 only to find the breakfast had been cleared away before we got there (the booklet -- and the laminated sheet in the breakfast area itself -- said breakfast until 10 on the weekends). This screwed up our schedule for the day and cost us more money. Staying at the College Inn might have been fine, perhaps even charming, for a short stay, but the inconsistencies, lack of amenities, and poor organization of the business as a whole made us more than ready to leave this place behind after our 11 night visit. read more

This place is a nice simple place if you're looking to spend some good nights out in the U-District. On the other hand, it's definitely NOT a family place or a luxuious long stay sort of place. The rooms seem very dorm-like. A good throw back to the old days of living of the now demoslished Mercer Hall. The rooms are very spartan, lots of room, but not much to do with it. There's no TV. A set back? Nope. The lack of a TV got my wife and I to get our bums outside to see a rally and bum around on the Ave. If we had a TV inthe room, we might have spent the night be lazy in fron tof the TV. Parking ain't always easy, but there is a giant parking lot a few blocks away that is super cheap. Go up Brooklyn to by the Hotel Deca and hit up that parking lot. It's only $8/24hrs. read more

My first time staying in a European style hotel, so I didn't know how I'd feel about the shared bathrooms situation at first. The man I checked in with was super helpful and friendly, made me feel right at home during my stay. The building is relatively small with a limited amount of rooms and being one of the only hotels on UW campus so rooms book up quick year-round. There are no elevators, and only stairs to reach your room. Not accessible to those who are physically disabled, but there is also only four floors so you'll have to decide if that is a burden or not. The offered complementary breakfast in their lounge area on the highest floor but I never bothered to wake up early enough to go check it out. My room was a single twin, very small but that's all the space I needed for a short stay. Included a desk, small sink and mirror, bedside stand and my bed. Everything was clean, maybe slightly outdated but you get what you pay for. The shared bathroom situation is always what throws people off, but I did not encounter a single person in this bathroom in the many times I used it. There is a stall and the showers have the window that blurs and then a curtain and a wall to separate the two showers from the rest of the bathroom. There is still plenty of privacy. The bathrooms were also very clean, I saw the housekeeper spend hours in each every morning and never saw any issues. Overall would stay again next time I'm in Seattle! read more
