All the stars are for Ryan at the front desk who was kind and helpful. It's clear he's working hard to make improvements to the hotel. That being said, he has quite a ways to go. The rooms were run down with odd mismatched furniture, painted over tagging on the ways (still visible) damaged tvs and disastrous plumbing. Love this little gem of a motel . Owner was super nice. We arrived very early in the morning because of a flight change. She let us into our room right away. Which was a good send in its self . Our room is spacious and very clean. Nice neighborhood nearby. Very close to the University campus. You can walk to several places to eat and a nearby Walgreens. Looks like they are in the process of upgrading some of the rooms. We would definitely recommend this motel to our friends and family. read more

I was absolutely obsessed with Kurt Cobain in my young adulthood so staying in the particular room in the particular hotel that he frequented meant a lot to me. The staff was so so so sweet and supportive of our venture, enthusiastically sharing in our excitement to be here and catch the remnants of Seattle grunge. They made sure we were warm and cozy in our Kurt room and made sure we got coffee and snacks for breakfast. This hotel is definitely a place to check out if you're on a budget. The location is great and close to so many nice restaurants and has a great view of the city especially at night. Its a motel where you pay for what you get. The shower is nice and the tv has local cable. I convinced myself that our room was haunted lol. The owner and desk workers were all so nice and welcoming. This was my first and will be my LAST time staying at a motel. Our flight to Seattle had been delayed so we arrived a little later than expected and we weren't able to check-in to our guesthouse on time. Our last resort was to stay at a cheap motel that takes late check-ins (past 1am). We googled a bunch of places and decided on Marco Polo since it wasn't too far and it was well.. cheap of course. When we arrived there, it didn't look as bad as it did in the pics. But it definitely had like a scary horror flick vibe. It was almost 2am and thankfully the guy let us check in. I think we had woken up since he was rubbing his eyes and seemed a bit groggy lol. Well my fiancé and I shared one room and his 2 friends shared another room. The rooms had a funky smell to it but it was bearable. Although it was clean... I just couldn't help but think about how many prostitutes and drug dealers must have stayed at this place *shivers* I was hesitant to take a shower but since I felt yucky from the plane, I just borrowed our friend's rubber slippers. Ripoff! It was Halloween weekend and I had used the Agoda App to book a room at this motel. I got a confirmation and it says to pay at the motel so I headed over there. After I arrived and finally got someone to answer and let me in the office the bs began. I showed the guy at the desk my confirmation from the app and the reservation number. He looked it up and said he couldn't find it and was not offering a solution or a room so I left. Then the next day I checked my bank account and he had charged me for the room anyways. I contacted Agoda and they said that they contacted the Motel but they couldn't do anything to help. So basically this place is a scam. They tell you that your confirmation from the app is not in the system and then charge you as a no show. Complete bs! read more

As a writer and avid traveler / backpacker I've stayed everywhere from five start luxury suits in Tokyo to flea ridden hostels in Germany, so I'm always glad to find a great place at a great price. The folks at Marco Polo were friendly - always with a smile and quickly squared away whatever was needed. Is the Marco Polo a luxury suite? Of course not, but I think it's better. It's operated by real folks trying to carve out a living in the world and it gives you a fabulous value for your dollar. The rooms where clean and comfortable - older but well kept. Everything worked exactly like it should and the place was surprisingly quiet. I was right over the office and as a high traffic area, I thought it was going to be fairly noisy, but nope I was pleasantly wrong. And as equally important as the price / room comfort, I felt very safe which at some of the places I've stayed has been an issue. I've learned over the years to not take safety for granted as Americans often do. The only thing that I'd caution travelers on (which has nothing to do with the Marco Polo), but rather for those who are new to the Seattle area and might not know, is that the streets are very narrow with cars going in both directions and parking along the sides - basically you have enough room for one car but usually end up with two. Along the same lines is Aurora Ave which is a divided road that might take some planing to synchronize up to whichever exit you are trying to get to. As to the motel? I picked this Motel as it was close to where we needed to go and it was a fair price. Upon arriving the room was disgusting. The tv did not work, (which they did not tell us) bed spreads had burn holes l, walls were filthy, and to top it off the people next to us were awake all night have relations pounding on the wall and keeping us awake partying. We got in late and headed straight to bed. As I climbed into bed, I was face to face with the light above. I noticed a significant amount of dead bugs in the lighting fixture. Gross. Luckily, I was too tired to inspect the other parts of this room. In the morning, I discovered a few more unsanitary goodies. Dust and dirt in the corners of the room, mystery stain on the bathroom wall and overall just a run down and unclean room. BUT you get what you pay for. Here is the thing... It was the cheapest spot in the area. I only needed it for a quick night's sleep. (I don't think I could handle much more.) I couldn't expect luxury, that would be absurd. What this motel provided, we paid for! I think the area stays busy and they can run this place full, so why update and keep it nice? Overall, cleanliness in a hotel/motel is a big deal for me, that is why the rating. I keep my home tidy and clean and would like the same at the hotels I stay at. On a positive note. Just horrible. If possible try avoiding the mean old man at the front desk who calls himself the "General Manager" of the run down place but acts as if its a five star hotel. He is completely unprofessional, rude and should not be working in the hospitality business at all with a poor and bitter attitude like he has. Our room look cleaned but when we took a closer look we found dirt, dust and mold throughout the room. The comforters smelled like the previous renters, fridge was filthy, walls have splatter stains and trash between the wall and head of bed. It was already late so we stuck it out but slept in our clothes and shoes and used our coats to put over our pillows. Beds consist of a thin mattress sitting on a piece of plywood and the fridge was filthy. See pictures. On the good side of things the housekeepers are really nice and friendly unlike Jonathan. We had an extra night on Seattle and needed a place with parking. It was available at the last minute and very reasonably priced. The desk staff was helpful. i called at 5pm and they held the room for me. We had the room in the picture, it has a view of downtown and you can leave the drapes open. There is a fridge and micro wave in the room. The room was spacious and clean, the shower was hot, there was TP and kleenex, the towels are small but i was able to dry off with no problem. There is free coffee after 8am. We have stayed in some pretty swanky places , this was not one of them but met our needs of free parking, available,inexpensive and good location. It was a $5 Uber to a great restaurant and a short drive to return the rental car to downtown in the morning. We absolutely got our moneys worth. read more

This place is disgusting. The room is obviously not non-smoking, it reeks like cigarettes the moment you walk in. The floor is filthy. The beds stink. There were only two towels for a four person room and one was dirty. The telephone to contact the front desk is broken. The shower alternates between cold a hot, and scalded my 6 year old. I knew it was too good to be true. The price genuinely reflects the accommodations. For a one-night stay for a business trip last month, we booked this motel because they were able to provide a room with 3 beds which is a definite luxury in not having to book multiple rooms for our team. Once we entered our room we saw a large space that had 2 beds and a cot looking bed for our third "bed". The room smelled rather musky but it was fine because that's all we needed and its not like we were going to be in the room for an extended period of time. After our event we headed back to the room to get some rest. This is where the real problems began. BED. BUGS. While I was trying to sleep, I felt like I was being bitten all throughout the night and woke up with upwards to 40-50 bites all over my body. When booking this Motel on line you can see that it is not the highest quality. In fact there are many reviews to let you know this is not the Hilton. If you are looking for a lush "American" hotel please go somewhere else and let the travel hardy people stay here and enjoy it. The cost for this place was very reasonable, I think I used a travel booking site but you can call them directly and get an equally thrifty price. The location is amazing!!! Within walking distance, a few blocks, of several different bus lines, the Fremont neighborhood, the Fremont troll and other fun things it is the perfect place to stay and explore Seattle. The front desk staff, Jonathan and Harry are extremely helpful with directions and even hotel service. We actually over booked our stay and they generously helped us out. The room we had was over the office. It was very large, sparse furnishings, decent bed, and it had a tub and a shower. The towels are a little small but adequate. The pillows are not terrific so bring your own if that will bother you. It was a great place to "crash" while we visited Seattle. Also ... This place once housed Kurt Cobain so really they could charge extra as it is historic to Seattle's music scene. ;P read more

While this is no Hilton by any stretch of the means, it definitely served it's purpose. Was looking for room over the Memorial weekend and this is what we found. It was in I guess you could say "seedy" area but really during the day it seemed fine. I wasn't sure about the evening as I was usually crashed in my room. The guy at the front desk was very nice, kind and helpful. He gave us room with three beds in it, which was nice, but we only needed one of the beds ( well sometimes we needed the other bed when there wasn't room in the one. I think these beds were probably doubles. The shower was kind of small as was the bathroom but that was ok, the water / shower was hot and I what I need to start my day. I could imagine anyone having a bath or anything in there, although it looks like you could. The room has a fridge / freezer and microwave, always a plus in my book that way we can try and save / make food in the room. The tv was fuzzy at best, but didnt' watch much tv. This room is definitely for you if you don't plan on spending time in the room. Otherwise you may want to get one of the more expensive hotels in the downtown area, we didn't want to do that. This perfectly fine. I saw no hookers or crack addicts though. I must have missed out! read more

Communication was poor, the people I met during my stay were super nice - but all had rich accents that made it difficult to understand them or have a conversation. Leading to lots of confusion. The room we were in was considered a no-smoking room, but obviously many people have ignored it. The room reeked of cigarrettes, and was in rather poor condition. In fact, 2 of the light bulbs were burned out and one of the lamps was completely broken. When we asked for new light bulbs he gave the same ones back to us after he "tested" them. They had an assortment of towels, but the biggest ones barely covered me, so that was an interesting and cold experience. Speaking of cold, I don't think that the heating in the room was working, but I'm not entirely sure. If it did work, it was definitely slow. Infact the heating baseboards were literally falling of the wall. The bathroom was probably the nicest part of the room, and it wasn't all that great either. They had extremely tiny bars of soap, and little packets (resembling a sauce packet) of a "conditioning shampoo." All the piping had rust on it. The shower curtain only covers 75% of the shower. The bathtub was okay, but definitely not for two people, due to the positioning of the draining system. The toilet paper was in a hard to reach position, and was obviously cheap. The towel rack was located about 3 feet away from the shower, and if you tried to reach for it slipping was inevitable. Also the drying rack portion of it was 6 inches, if that, above the top of the toilet. The toilet itself was grimey and uncomfortable. The parking was not super convenient but there seemed to be enough of it. The room itself had a bed, mini fridge/freezer combo, three chairs (one for laying back in with an ottoman), two tables, three lamps (two worked), two night stands with a drawer and shelf, and a TV on a dresser. The TV was posionted in a way that made it uncomfortable to view. The wall outlets were far from the bed or directly behind it, and everything easily fell out of the them. The bed was a soft hard, with nice pillows and a dinky bed cover. We didn't even get in the bed due to fear of bed bugs (this fear was based purely of judgements made from the overall condition of the room). The pricing seemed decent when booking it, but after this experience I'd say it was not worth the $168 we put down for two nights. When we asked to check out earlier than anticipated he chuckled and said it wasn't possible. At that point I didn't want any refund, I just wanted to spend the night somewhere else and not have to deal with checking out of this motel the next morning. Overall, will not return. And to anyone considering this motel that happens to check Yelp, hear me on this: IT IS WORTH SOME EXTRA MONEY TO AVOID THIS LEVEL OF FOOLERY. WARNING: The pictures on their site are either of the very very best rooms they have available, photoshopped, from the opening of the motel, or are just stolen from the internet. p.s. the cleaning lady is super nice. Clean, smelled like the 1970s, big room, motel style layout, a modest view of downtown Seattle and Mt. Rainier (big points for that, nothing like waking up early for a flight and seeing my favorite Washington state lump of rocks and ice). Got in super late at night, like 2:30am, and instead of a late check in charge with pleasant service, we got no charge and rude service - fine by me! "There should be a penalty for checking in so late," says the baldheaded guy from behind the camera that points directly in your face as you converse. The clever businessman running this hotel has apparently decided to make this "penalty" a nonmonetary one. I think he thought I was the only one staying in the room, so I had to sneak my fiancee in all covertly. Only had to pay $140 for 2 nights - good deal, especially in this area. All the comments about freebasing on coke, cheap hookers, etc are pretty much spot on. Just make sure you ask for the room above the office. read more

The Marco Polo is exactly what it claims to be - cheap, friendly & clean... we stayed there last summer and will do so again this summer... I just felt compelled to dispute some of the less than stellar comments here - what do you want for a $60/night stay? It's a 10 minute stroll to one of the BEST neighbourhoods in seattle, with amazing coffee (NOT starbucks), great restaurants, galleries & shopping, plus a fresh market and more... it's a 15 minute bus ride to downtown (it's location makes it a bit costly for a cab due to tunnels and oneway traffic)... the staff are friendly, the wifi is free, the lights work, there was a fridge in our room, and the bed was perfectly adequate for the length of time we planned to stay in it... seriously, who travels to stay in hotels?? you go to seattle to experience seattle... and if you want to use your money to EXPERIENCE stuff, then the Marco Polo is a GREAT way to save some cash AND have a decent sleep. ... just sayin'. read more

For Seattle. . .it's a bargain. The motel is dated, but maintained. The room initially had a musty odor; but a spritz of febreze solved that. If you bike Seattle, you'll find that the location is convenient. Freemont Brewery was five minutes by bike; downtown is 15 minutes. Wi-Fi is strong. I stayed here two years ago and it was absolutely horrible! Cigarette burns on the blankets, smells like urine, bathroom is small and shower wasn't very sanitary. I have not stayed here yet but will when we do get a chance to visit Seattle. My review is for how sweet they were on our cancellation request! We were supposed to see Childish Gambino in concert and when he broke his foot I guess and had to cancel 2 days before, which happened to be after the free cancellation period of course, I called and they were so nice about it. The guy who answered made me laugh as he was a little "gruff" at first and I thought no way will he listen to me but he did! This is the most disgusting place!!! Dirty sheets, bloody bed comforter, old smelly rooms that smells like urine. Towels were dirty, stained and rough. The beds were built on 2X4's that stuck out from the bed that you trip on. This is a horrible place and I recommend people stay away unless filth is for you!!!!
