Here, this coffeehouse seemingly "belongs" to the university, Case Western Reserve, but because University Circle is a one mile radius that also includes the main art museum, a music performance hall, and two important medical centers with many buildings for specialties, the Coffee House is visited by everyone. It's called the Coffee House at University Circle, but I've also heard it called University Coffee House. The streets here are gridded and, north of Case Western Reserve University's smaller quad, other academic units and buildings might be found on these blocks. Incidentally, I can explain Case Western succinctly. Just like Duke, Vanderbilt, and Emory might be "Southern Ivies," private and prestigious Case Western and Carnegie Mellon in not too distant Pittsburgh seem like "two peas in a pod" and are STEM powerhouses. The kids in here seem serious and do not come across like partying types. The Coffee House occupies a loosely Tudor-styled older building that might have been something else at one time. It has two levels, with bigger rooms downstairs and smaller ones upstairs. The coffee and tea are fairly priced and there are also sweet and savory items. On the day I visited, I had walked over from the main UH Medical Center, bypassing the Starbucks that is much closer to it. I'm glad I did. I also stumbled onto the day of the week when their big cookies are $1. They feature daily specials. I didn't go looking for cookies, nor for deals on them. I was still expecting to get something to accompany my hot drink - Earl Grey tea. The service was fine. They might make recommendations if you ask and they are patient. There will be CWRU students in here with their laptops open. There will also be faculty members. There will also be people involved in or receiving health care at the medical complexes in University Circle, doing something stimulating the intellect at the renowned and free of charge Cleveland Museum of Art or at Severance Hall for musical performances, partaking in a Meetup, and then some. But I'd say that at least half of those present are connected to academia. It's an imposing large coffeehouse. There's an outdoor terrace out front for when the weather is cooperating. Note that the window of hours is sort of tight and doesn't go too far into the evening. Either way, the Coffee House at University Circle makes for a neat environment for doing the coffeehouse thing, with or without a laptop open. read more

Charming little local coffee spot near Case and UH. My colleague and I like to walk over from our office in the afternoon, so it's always been pretty quiet when I'm in. In the afternoon, service is pretty quick, and the staff are friendly. They have an interesting looking specialty drink menu, and there are always nice looking pastries and sandwiches. I usually just have an Italian soda, because it's caffeine free and refreshing. read more

Great place on CWRU's campus for delicious drinks and decent pastries. I've tried several of their drinks and have never been disappointed. The service is always friendly, and plenty of seating upstairs or downstairs to hang out and do work. I've tried one of the more substantial food options, and it was decent but not super impressive. This used to be my favorite place to come and study. I still come and study here but something has happened to their pasteries. They used to be very obviously made in house and I would get up especially early to get one of their croissants. Looking for local coffee while touring Case Western Reserve and found this gem in the middle of campus. Reasonably priced and a quaint little spot, it's been around for more than fifty years. The owner is working the register and prepping drinks and the service is excellent. Got the americano, which was great. Opted for waffles while the wife and daughter got croissants. This place is exactly what is sounds like!!! An entire house that's a coffee shop. Located on Case Westerns Campus, this is a spacious home with plenty of seating, different rooms to find your own space in, and even an upstairs which I didn't check out. The menu is quite delightful with all the classics, syrups, teas, pastry's, and cafe foods. I got a latte with oat milk that was super yummy! This is such a refreshing place. It's not modern by any means. It has absolutely no frills attached to it, and that's what I think I love the most about it. If you're in university circle, near the museum, on campus, or just would like to go somewhere with so much charm. Go here! read more

I thought it was a mistake, but after asking, they told me they use "cold brew toddy" for iced lattes and that I would have to "request" hot shots next time? Awww, this place is so sweet and I love it! Located in University Circle, this coffee shop is quaint and inviting. There is indoor seating but more importantly, there is an awesome outdoor patio, both with plenty of seating. This has become a multiple-times-a-week stop for me after work to caffeinate so I don't get home and immediately fall asleep on the couch. They have such great options as far as food and drinks go. As far as drinks, they have all of the coffee shop essentials and my favorite is their ice vanilla nut coffee. They also have some savory options for eating but the baked goods are definitely the stars. I believe everything is made in house and my favorites so far are the peanut butter chocolate chunk cookie and the humming bird bread (made with pineapple, carrots, and raisins, not with dead hummingbirds, ya weirdo). They also have fruit tarts, macarons, cake, turnovers and more. The woman that works there most afternoons is really friendly and could remember my coffee order after just two visits as A++ for that. Very close to the Cleveland Art Museum, Natural History Museum, Botanical gardens and of course the Case Campus. Used to come here during undergrad / grad school at Case and it was always a great spot to get work done. As my wife and I walked around Case Western Reserve one Sunday morning, we really wanted coffee. Seeing The Coffee House just ahead of us, we decided to stop in. It reminded me of a couple of coffee shops that I frequented when I was a student, so it gave me a good vibe from the get-go. They had a wide variety of coffees and teas, as well as a small food menu and a display case of muffins and other pastries. I ordered a regular coffee, and my wife had tea -- no food. They were normal drinks, nothing great, nothing bad, just what you normally find in a university coffee shop. The space is like a normal crunchy coffee shop at a university -- it looks like an old house, and each room has tables and chairs, random books piled on shelves for people to peruse, a few couches and worn-out but still comfortable living room chairs, lots of wood and creaky floors. And it was packed -- we were lucky that someone was leaving and we could snag a table. One bad side to this place was the heat -- it was boiling in there. Like seriously, I don't think I'd be able to sit there and work for a couple of hours without falling asleep or sweating myself to death. Will I go back? Since I don't live in Cleveland, the chances are slim. Would I go back if I lived there? Possibly, though I'd have to do a little sleuthing to figure out when it is less packed so that I'd have a chance of getting a table without having to wait or depend on luck. read more

The coffee house is my go-to study spot on campus - it's ideal for camping out with a drink and a snack in between classes. The have a wide variety of bakery items, breakfast/lunch, and drinks, and I can honestly say I never get tired of coming here even everyday in a week. I'm especially partial to their croissants, which they usually have plain, almond, and pain au chocolat. There's so much seating on the first and second floors with some private study rooms for a larger group. I love the greenhouse vibe on the first floor which gets so cozy in the winter and perfect for people watching out on the street. When it's warm out the patio is great, especially with some morning sun. Ambience switches between louder coffeehouse vibes during mealtimes and quieter study space in between Pro-tip if you're a case affiliate, you can usually stay on the case wifi too, though no complaints with what coffee house has :) read more

Stopped by for a pre-study breakfast and was not disappointed. Very cute, lot of students and a group of people seeming to have some sort of book club, meetup, etc. Vibes are great. I could see myself studying here for hours with the endless coffee, yummy sweets, and windows with great lighting. We got the iced coffee, waffles, biscuits and gravy, fruit tart, and cinnamon roll. Fruit tart and cinnamon rolls were yummy but average. However, biscuits and gravy were SO DELICIOUS. Waffles were also good, particularly because of their jam, and I'm not usually a fan of jam. Iced coffee was the only ~meh~ part, so I'll definitely be trying a different drink when I'm back. Overall, great food and great vibes. read more

many upsides: coziness built into an old house with some homey touches (like fireplaces, old windows). the coffee tastes good and is reasonably priced, and so are the pastries, ample savory food options. there is tons of meeting and study space, including in front of nice windows, big tables, a bar you could stand at, and more space upstairs. you can also rent out space for private events, which is convenient. reason it's not a 5 star: you have to pay for parking. and they DO ticket. :/ read more

Personally, the pastries didn't look super impressive, but they have a good selection of coffee drinks and teas to choose from. The drinks are the best in the area I think, the pastries are always good and the vibe is immaculate. A solid place to study and get some coffee. It's really central on Case's campus, which is not where I usually am, but I'd imagine is really convenient for undergrad students. The coffee isn't too pricy and my mocha tasted good, and they also have plenty of food options as well. There's seating both inside and outside, and there's seating on both the main floor and upstairs. I had a little bit of trouble finding tables with outlets on the ground floor, but had no such issues upstairs. The only issue with sitting upstairs was that it got a bit warm, but it was a really sunny day and they have a lot of windows for natural lighting. Its a challenge to rate this place. I guess it depends on what you are looking for. Studying: great at times, noisy at others due to music or others. Talking: same as above. If there are lots of people studying, you almost feel bad talking, but it is a public place. Coffee: I haven't had all available items but the regular coffee is so so which is what I usually drink. I studied here in college regularly and love the atmosphere; students as well as locals create an Intellectual and sophisticated feel. It is lively Friday and Sunday nights. I used to drink coffee with my friends and enjoyed so many great conversations. The house itself is old and creates a great atmosphere. In Fall and winter the place is cozy and spring/summer refreshing with outdoor seating on a nice lawn area. This is not a fancy Starbucks or other chain, it is a real cafe which in my opinion is how they should be, loaded with character and unique. They do need to focus on coffee quality since it is after all a cafe. read more

This place has a new name; it's called The Coffee House at University Circle. However, from what I could tell, absolutely nothing has changed...which is too bad, because if this place improved just a litttttttttttttle bit, I would want to come here all the time. Why? One simple reason: FREE PARKING. (No other coffee house around here has that; the closest other one is Cedar Fairmount Starbucks.) Despite this huge benefit, I hold my nose every time I come here and tell myself, "...maybe it'll be better next time." But, it never, ever is. I need to remember the immortal words of George W. Bush when I think about coming here again, "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice...and I won't get fooled again." Even If I were being tortured, I could not think of one positive thing to say about this place other than the location. The coffee is mediocre; the stuff I make in my wife's French press tastes better. The place doesn't take credit cards. The staff always act very, very pretentious. Worst of all, the place is as uncomfortable as a mausoleum. There is not ONE upholstered chair in the place! Every chair is hard wood and they get uncomfortable mighty quick. Also, the place has the worst climate control of any business in the area. In the summer, it's boiling hot and people engage in childish passive-aggressive behavior about whether or not to open the windows because it lets in noise. In the winter, the uninsulated windows let a steady draft of cold air in. Once Obama fixes the economy and businesses start investing and expanding again, I'd love it if someone like Starbucks or Caribou (or heck, even Phoenix) came in, took this place over, and ran it right. If this place didn't have a captive audience of students, this place would be outta business. read more

I've been coming here for a while now, and I want to like it because it reminds me of my many stomping grounds at my alma mater, the University of Michigan. (I have lots of fond memories of the Michigan League, and the Michigan Union.) Great things: The overall feel is very collegiate - I see lots of professor types, international students (from Europe and Asia), and music students (CIM). I've had many work-related meetings here too. They have Case wifi and free parking in the back, which is helpful at a university. They also have quiet study rooms upstairs. They have a great selection of teas. One of my favorites is Russian Country, which my friends find obnoxious because it's so smoky. Not-so-great things: The food selection, pastries, and service. The food is overpriced and it doesn't look generally appealing. I had a Mediterranean salad from amir- they were skimpy on handing out pita bread to accompany the hummus, lentil salad, and chickpea salad. The coffee is pretty much average. The pastries are usually old, never fresh. As for the service, I'm usually met with a lot of snark or attitude. I'm tempted to bring them down to one star for this unless they change this soon!
