I went back to Coal Bunker for a second time to try the Ruben. My buddy Chris and I rode motorcycles up on a sunny day. The Ruben was really tasty, plenty of meat, delicious sauces and unique fresh bread. The side salad was pretty big, I had to take 1/2 of the sandwich home and eat for dinner. As you enter into the restaurant on ground level, you enter into acquaint room with antique furniture and a sign that says service upstairs. When you step upstairs you immediately entering into another time zone. Simply decorated with antique chairs and boots dated back in Time. It's a very simple, but friendly place. The waiter that served today was a very friendly young man. He was very informative when we asked him about certain dishes on the menu. I He checked in on us periodically to see if we needed anything else. This was our first time of going to this restaurant, but we went here for several reasons. First of all, it was a restaurant in our community so we wanted to support our community here in Fallbrook. Secondly, we've heard so much about the service and food, we wanted to talk about it on Yelp. I look forward to visiting this restaurant again. read more

This is our favorite restaurant in Fallbrook. I always get the exact same thing when I go, The Bunker Burger. It is amazing! The burger is always cooked to perfection and seasoned well, loaded with cheese, bacon and caramelized onions. Sometimes I can't finish it, but it's still good leftover, which never happens with a burger. The bun is nice and soft and grilled & the bunker sauce is pretty good too, but I feel like the burger is great without it as well. They make all their sauces on site. The Italian vinaigrette is great on the side salad, but their homemade mac and cheese is great as well. It can't comment on many other options on their menu because I've only ever eaten the burger there. And we never take our son who is super picky because they don't have French fries or any food that he would eat on their menu. They do have some beers on tap and a pretty good selection of canned beers/drinks. I tried a rum and coke there once and their sake based spirits are a bit weird for my taste. Anyhow, service is always decent as it's a small space and you can usually catch someone's attention if you need anything. If you're lucky enough to be able to snag a booth, do it! They have two super cute and private booths with comfy cushions and there are several other seating options, a few high tops and some regular height tables as well as some bar seating if you'd like to sit up at the counter. My bf and i absolutely inhaled every dish we got !!! For all my dawg lovers they have some PREMIUM meats !!!! And same for my mac and cheese lovers ! Perfect about of cheese , the noodle was soft but not mushy honestly id rate it a lot higher if I had the chance too , but truly 100/10 :) and customer service was amazing as well. Came in on a hot autumn day. Was instantly greeted by the cool and open space. Decor was reminded us of old spaghetti factory mixed w claim jumpers. We ordered the Bunker and BBQ bacon ranch burgers. My family loved this place so much we went back. My wife wanted the Tri tip sandwich she had last time. We show up on a Monday and the Tri tip sandwich was not on the Monday menu. She mentioned it to the waitress. The waitress explained why it wasn't available that day. She was a little bummed out but trusted the other item she ordered was going to be delicious. The waitress takes our orders and leaves. She comes back a minute later and says I talked to the chef and since it's not busy she can make you a Tri tip sandwich. Honestly that was AMAZING service. They didn't have to go out of the way but they did. Both the waitress I don't remember her name and the chef. Amazing food, perfect service, and the last time we went, there was live music! My husband and I have been going here since we moved to Fallbrook. We love the casual, funky atmosphere. It's such a vibe. But the amazing food and service is really what brings us back every time. And the pickles!! Best I've EVER had. The burger was real good with a fluffy bun and real good cook on the patty. i am a bit pissed off on the upcharge on smashed potatoes that i was not told were 3 dollars more. shame on the waitress for not mentioning that. it really takes away from the experience when i feel like i got gouged on 3 dollars more for potatoes that were fried. funny that potatoe chips were included tho! beer prices are 8 bucks a pint..... 1.50 too much for a pint. owners should instruct wait staff for full disclosure on upgrades. i could have said something but 3 bucks less on the tip works just the same for me, (but i don't pay today) . probably won't be back but in the event i do since my wife likes it, i will pay more attention and ask more questions due to the non disclosure policy and practices experienced today 7/23/24 at 1245 pm. read more

I can't believe I haven't left a review for The Coal Bunker. I love this place, cool train vibe including some of the booths. I see a lot of negative comments about no fries. For me, the crispy potatoes are better than fries. The Ruben is one of the best I've ever had. The Banh mi salmon is my wife's favorite. Always check the specials. The burgers are incredible too. Went in for their French onion burger special and it was amazing. I literally spent the same amount on the burger that I did on a meal at McDonald's earlier in the week. Prices are very reasonable and you get your monies worth. The service is top notch, very tentative of the needs and wants of their patrons. Contacted The Coal Bunker before Thanksgiving and ordered online their Thanksgiving togo Turkey dinner. A first for us. Dinner included for 4 people, all in air tight foil containers. The turkey was done perfectly , not dry, moist, and very tasty. Dinner came with Gravy, Green Beans, Mashed Potatoes, Cranberry sauce and a delicious Pumpkin pie. We recently visited Fallbrook as we were checking the progress on our new home being built. We were looking up restaurants that are dog friendly and this little hidden gem popped up. The waitress was really nice and recommended a local Chardonnay that was really tasty. It was only $15 for the bottle also which was a great deal. We started off with the Queso dip which was really tasty and quite large. We then shared the Tuscan chicken and shepherds pie. All in all the outdoor area and experience was really good. I love dinner theater! My wife and I stopped in for lunch one day and were seated at a booth, I think it was the second one in on the left. The wait staff was really attentive and friendly (likely on account of it wasn't that busy there at the time) and they gave us time to review the menu while answering our questions. While we reviewed the menu and thought about what we wanted, another patron entered and was being shown to the booth right after ours. Glancing at the woman as she walked by, the best word I could conjure to describe her was "dumpy". She was having an interesting conversation with the server on their way passed... "Y'all got local wines here, right?" "Yes. There are several great wineries here in Fallbrook and we carry several of their offerings." The woman continued as she sat down, "Is one of them red? I like reds." "Yes. I believe a couple of them are red." "Great. Bring me a glass of one of them. That sounds good. Hey, can you bring me the phone?" Upon this question, my wife and I shot each other exactly the same look, the look that says "What is happening right now" without having to say it out loud. "I'm sorry, did you ask for the phone?" "Yep. I need to make a call." "Ummm let me check." Absolutely bewildered, the server walked passed us, mumbling the patron's question under her breath on her way back to the kitchen. From the entry we could only make out her side of the next exchange... "Where's the phone?" ... "One of the guests." ... "I know, right? I don't know." ... "Yeah, I'll tell her. No. I will." Next thing I know the server is walking back passed our table with the handset of a cordless phone to present it to the woman who had asked for it. "So, you said you had to make a call?" "Yep." "Ok, but please make it quick because this is our only phone and we use it to receive phone orders and stuff." "Yeah, yeah no problem." And then the server walked passed us again, likely thinking exactly the same things we were. Chiefly amongst all those things was, "What in the world is going on here? Am I on pills?" The whole scene was ludicrous and my wife and I were there for all of it. I think a lot of people would have taken points off for the phone not being an old rotary dial jobby requiring the server to weave a super long wire across the dining room, but not me. read more

The bleu burger: with Bleu cheese, caramelized onion and sautéed mushrooms on a locally made Kaiser roll (from another fallbrook gem Bakin it up), but I subbed their house made eggplant & mushroom veggie patty instead of the beef one. And it was totally awesome! . The Soyrizo Stuffed Avocado: with sautéed Soyrizo & a cilantro lime, sour cream drizzle. (I hadn't tried this one yet because I had assume , I don't know why, that the avocado was baked with the filling which I wouldn't have really liked. But it's not!) You have the steaming, slightly spicy filling, paired perfectly with the cool creamy avocado and cilantro sour cream. So so good! Plus it's vegetarian & low carb! Last we got their passion fruit cheesecake also from local baker Bakin it up. The tartness of the passion fruit perfectly balanced the extremely rich and creamy cheese cake! So happy to finally support a local restaurant with great food! We need more here in Fallbrook and this place didn't disappoint. Our drinks were great (sangria & hazy ipa beer) and food was delicious. My son is on a very restrictive diet for 28 days and waitress navigated us with his order which he devoured. Didn't get a picture of it since he consumed it so quickly.... It was grilled chicken with pesto and a side of grilled veggies. Dessert was also yummy! This was such a cool spot! Loved the vibe with the vintage furniture and even a couple booths designed to look like they were in an old train car. Everything we ordered was delicious and came out quickly. I had the pulled pork sandwich (so full of flavor) and a wedge salad, while my husband had the coal burger with Mac and cheese as a side. I stole a bite and next time we go back I will definitely be getting some Mac and cheese for myself! It was also great that our server offered to let us sample the beer on draft before we committed to ordering a glass. My 7 yr old son also thoroughly enjoyed his grilled cheese and apple slices.
