All I can say is "wow". I'm pretty clumsy...I've busted my fair share of laptops in the last few years. Each time, I've had to go through the headache of warranty repairs and/or drain my wallet to just buy a new computer. I thought I was in the same position with my VAIO after I dropped it and broke the DC port and back hinge a few weeks ago...my wireless switch was also broken from a previous incident. I knew my computer was not under warranty anymore and besides, I read all these horror stories about VAIO's warranty service. So I googled "best computer repair in San Jose" and the top hit was the Yelp reviews for Cheap Squad. After reading so many great reviews, I decided to take my computer in to them. They took the computer in for a free diagnostic and let me know that they would contact me in 1-2 business days with the verdict. They called me within the promised time (which I really appreciated; most places leave you hanging) and let me know what was going on. It turns out that the broken hinge required complete replacement of the back panel and that the part was likely to be very hard to find. For the next few days, they called me several times to keep me updated with what was going on, which was very thoughtful and reassured me that the problem was indeed being worked on to their best ability. They actually spent a few days just looking for the back panel piece; this is unheard of to me. Most places that you'd take a problem like this to would just cop out and tell you they can't get the part because they wouldn't want to spend the extra time to find and obtain it; they'd pocket the $50 "diagnostic fee" that almost all other places charge and give my broken shit back to me. The fact that Cheap Squad actually spent days searching for a seller and contacting them several times to ensure that it was the correct part is unprecedented. The whole repair process took a little longer than expected, but that was ONLY because they had to wait on receipt of the specialty part (which I'm amazed they found at all). Therefore, I have no complaints whatsoever. I am fully aware that any other repair shop would have either charged me $400 for the repair and/or told me flat out to just leave and buy a new comp. The original quoted price was for around $150 (parts + labor), which in my opinion is an awesome deal to restore my 2.5 year old originally $1250 computer to brand new (it has an i7 and is competitive with most of the better stuff out there now; no point buying a new one yet). However, when I walked into the shop today to pick my laptop up, I saw that they were only charging me $76 for the parts because it took so long (even though realistically, I knew that it wasn't their fault since the special part had to be shipped from the east coast). I was shocked and honestly, I felt bad...I would have been more than happy to pay the original quoted price for the great service and hard work they put into helping me. What's more, I spoke to them on a Saturday and they told me the computer would be ready on Monday. Sure enough, I got a call on Sunday letting me know that I could come pick up my repaired laptop even though the shop was technically closed (since I had mentioned that I work out of town during the week). I can safely say that I was touched by this dedication to my satisfaction; you really don't find many places these days that care about their customers like that. I'd give them a -5 if I could. I used them last August and they claimed the issues with my comp were such that they could only be solved by wiping my entire system and rebuilding it. I allowed it, only to find that LESS THAN A DAY after they'd finished, I had most of the same issues, although some issues were resolved. Fast forward to yesterday, I called about these same issues and some new ones, and was told that their tech could remote in and fix them for me, and address the remaining issues at the same time. The tech called today but I had to call back. He was so rushed to get me off the phone that instead of asking why I was calling, he pulled up my account, saw my invoice from LAST year and assumed I was "taken care of." When I was FINALLY able to get a word in, he told me they don't do remote work. Really? Then I advised him they I was told that they did...he hemmed and hawed and FINALLY asked me what my issue was. I gave him a 15 second explanation, then he interrupted AGAIN to ask if I had any internet. I told him mostly no, and he interrupted AGAIN to say they could do the work if I had no internet. At which point I told him off and hung up. I don't know who this guy was, but he was rude, dismissive, arrogant and a total A-hole. read more

I can's say enough good things about these guys! My girlfriend's HP All in one POS died (screen would not fire up.. and NEVER EVER buy an All in one PC, since it's a nightmare to work on) many months ago. I brought it in to Cheap Squad about a month ago. Jeremy took it in and said he would get back to me. I was in no hurry. He called me about 2 weeks later and said it looked like the built in monitor was indeed bad, but he found some new ones on eBay for $129. I ordered one and when it arrived a week later, I took it down to them. He again contacted me about a week later and said that they had tried all sorts of stuff, but there was apparently some other issue and they would continue working on it. He assured me that if they could not fix it, he would not only not charge me for any work, but would also buy the replacement monitor I had purchased. Long story short, they could not fix it. I picked it up and he even gave me the full $129 that I spent on the monitor back. I insisted that they at least keep $30 for their trouble, but he stated "I can't go back on my word" and handed me the $30 backs. Any shop that would go through this much trouble is golden in my book. I have referred everyone I know who has computer issues to these guys. I will take any future PC repair needs to them. First I want to say Cheap Squad fixed my husband's laptop screen within 2 days. If this review was for that visit, it would obviously be 5 stars. I brought my old Macbook pro here thinking I needed a new screen (it worked attached to an external monitor and had passed some checks at the Apple store) and I also ordered a new battery. The guys quoted me whatever the standard price for screen replacement is but said it may be more since it was for an older Mac, and they also mentioned it would take a few extra days to get the mac screen. No problem, as a long time Apple user I understand that Apple stuff is always more complicated. However, they never kept in touch with me to let me know they were having trouble sourcing the screen. I had to call them to find this out after waiting over a week the first time. They said it was out of stock but they found a place to get it from, and would let me know when it was ready. Then I waited some more and called them a couple weeks later, and they said it was coming and it would be ready in a few days. I think they did actually call me the next time, but it was bad news - turns out it wasn't the screen but the logic board, so it wasn't really worth replacing. They put the old screen back on and said I could pick up the laptop and keep the new battery free of charge for the hassle (that was unnecessary but nice of them). I'm not sure why no one was able to diagnose that it was the logic board and not the screen - not blaming Cheap Squad for this part because Apple missed it too. Overall this process lasted several weeks instead of several days. It was actually close to 2 months before I picked up the laptop, but that extra time was due to lagging on my part - there was no hurry on my part to pick it up since it still wasn't working properly anyway. I sent my husband to pick up the laptop, and when he brought it home the power adapter was missing and there were some sharp metal parts sticking out of the seams from when they reassembled the laptop. It was pretty messy work! I had him drop it back off. When I picked it up, it looked OK. I reminded the guy at the counter about the power adapter. After looking around in back for a few minutes, the guy brought me a really scratched up, worn looking adapter. He acknowledged it wasn't the one I brought him but that it would work. I accepted it because I had no other choice. He did not offer even a simple "sorry" for losing my item or putting laptop back together in a sloppy manner. The lack of care when putting the computer back together again, the loss of my personal property (the adapter), and the lack of timely communication are why I give Cheap Squad such a low rating. read more

If Chuck Norris ever wanted his computer fixed, he'd bring it to The Cheap Squad. The reviews/ratings don't lie. The front desk guy, Daniel, was a pretty chill dude to strike a conversation with about how the business got started and all that stuff. Was really friendly,Clearly explained what there policy was, how long it would take for a diagnosis, and how long it would take to fix it. Now the person who fixed my desktop/laptop, Jeremy, was really knowledgeable and knew how to break down step by step what was wrong with my laptop/desktop. He was basically Yoda and l was Luke Skywalker as he was telling me what my best options were. He fixed my laptop for free cause it was a minor problem simply by using the force. He diagnosed my desktop and said that i had a bad motherboard and hard drive. He honestly said it wasn't really worth it to replace the motherboard since it's been known to have the same problem, and requested that I just save up for a harder, better, faster, stronger motherboard. All in all, if God made a heaven for computers/laptops/desktops, it'd be at The Cheap Squad. They'll take good care of you. On a serious note, if you have any problem with your desktop/laptop/ps3/xbox/phone, bring it to these guys. They give you a free diagnosis and tell you your best options, pretty damn friendly, and overall have good prices on what needs to be fixed. My SUPER old Gateway laptop was getting way too hot and shutting down, so I decided to take it to these guys. They greeted me at the front and had patience when I was explaining my computer issue. What was great was that they have a FREE diagnoses protocol! They explained that it would take about 2 days for them to get back to me since they had a lot of computers to look at. Took down all my info and I waited for their call back. Two days later I get a call from Jeremy explaining that my motherboard was the issue along with the PC Jack. He broke it down in ways that a computer novice would understand. He even stated that yes, he could fix it, but that it wouldn't be really worth it. I appreciated his honesty because his company could have easily told me that he could fix it and that would resolve my issue, but he was honest and suggested in the long run it would be wiser to get a new laptop. :) In the end, I decided to just pick up my laptop and not get anything repaired. When picking up my laptop, I asked Jeremy if he had any suggestions for a new laptop. Again, he was very patient explaining a good laptop model and where is the best place to buy it. Overall it was a great experience! The staff is really friendly, quick, professional and willing to answer all your questions. They have free parking validation if you park in the 3rd street parking garage (entrance on 4th street). They also have the free diagnostic policy! The location is convenient too! They don't return calls to let you know about the status of your equipment being repaired. I wholeheartedly believe that this is a huge factor of what makes a business successful. About three years ago I was in a jam with my lap top for business. We were using an IT group who charged 250.00 and said it could not be fixed. Let me begin by fessing up - I like to do business locally so if I have to sacrifice some quality or cost I can live with it but my experience with The Cheap Squad completely blew me away. I came here because my HP laptop died on me - black screen - no sign of life. I walked and as I described the problem Jeremy quickly told me what he thought the problem was - issues with the Nvidia graphics chip, had to be reseated and it would cost $80. with a 90 day warranty Picked up the laptop and went home and the computer worked fine. A day later I realized that when the computer got into sleep mode I couldn't revive other than rebooting - which was quite a bummer. I could have lived with but decided to take it and have it checked in case it was something simple. And to make a long story short after two days of diagnostics they realized that it needed a bios update and in the process they updated the OS. It works real well. All for no charge. I kind of felt bad that for a small startup company they had to put in their own time to get my machine working again so I offered to pay but they refused take it saying that they should checked it properly before handing it back to me. Now is that service or what. If my computer ever acts up again I am going there. Proud to have such a good business in the neighborhood. read more

I had a huge presentation one morning when I realized, 20 mins before I was on, that the person who lent me a projector didn't include the power cord. I frantically called a few computer places but none answered or the few that did weren't at all helpful. Luckily I made one last call to the Cheap Squad and they had the casio power cord I so desperately needed. However since the first time I dropped in, I got "that gut feeling" that I can trust these guys. I took my computer here a week ago because it was not turning on cause the power cord wasn't turning on and they got the part needed to attach my power cord to the computer from Pennsylvania and installed it the next day for a reasonable price. After finding that my hard drive was bad--and, in fact, so frozen that a data migration might not be possible, or, if so, it would be very time intensive and manual--Jeremy let me know that they came in early to figure it out and complete the transfer. He and Carla definitely went the extra mile to set me up with a new hard drive, set up my operating system, and get all my data transferred. He was in continual contact throughout the process. I took my laptop to get checked out because it would not always turn on. I guess you can call it a tempermental computer. I spoke to Daniel, who was very honest, and he advised me they would get back to me within 24 hours. The next day I got a call and was advised my laptop was ok except for possibly a defective motherboard. Daniel advised me to contact the manufacture because the laptop was probably within its warranty cause it was not even a year old. He did not want to take my money if the manufacture could fix it for free. BIG PLUS, HE DID NOT CHARGE ME TO CHECK OUT WHAT WAS WRONG WITH THE COMPUTER AS OTHER PLACES HAVE IN THE PAST. I was pretty sure I had contracted a virus on my laptop by engaging in some unsafe computing activities, so I repartitioned my hard drive and reinstalled Windows. After that, though, it would no longer boot and no one could figure out why. It turned out that I had an old BIOS that would not recognize an HD bigger than 137G. After I recreated the small partition on the hd, the system booted fine. However, I had lost the USB drive with the wifi driver on it :-( Jose and Jeremy hooked me up with network cable and got me the driver I needed, plus some other ones too. My 8 year old Mac Mini died. I went to the Apple Store to buy a new one and brought my old one so the data could be transferred. The Apple tech said that the mother board was dead and Apple couldn't transfer the data. They referred me to a place where I given an estimate of a minimum of $200 to open the computer and transfer data. I decided to l get another estimate and found the Cheap Squad. I was told it would be $80 to transfer the data, so I left both computers for the work to be done. Got the computers back the next day and was told that the mother board was OK and that there was a problem with one of the memory boards. My daughter dropped our MacBook on the kitchen floor, wouldn't get past the startup screen when I tried to restart, Apple store guy said data recovery would be very expensive but the only option, and he recommended ClickAway. ClickAway has good reviews, and I have not taken anything into their store before. However, when I called about my problem, the person I spoke with wouldn't give me an estimate whatsoever regarding potential price for recovery. I had to ask him maybe three times before he gave me a base price of $300 (another guy I spoke with may have said $200-$300 but I think it was $300) for the simplest recovery situation - he said it could cost more depending on how much time it required. I called The Cheap Squad per the reviews and was given a flat rate of $60 if they could get anything off of my computer. They wouldn't charge any fee if they couldn't. The guy that helped me out, Jordan, worked a long time to get my data off. In the end, they charged me $150 to replace the damaged hard drive which included the data recovery/transfer! I have no idea if these guys are honest - the idea of handing my computer over to someone that has my data on it was unnerving to me - but they were professional, worked hard, and I never felt like they were trying to rip me off. They got the job done at...I want to say half the price as ClickAway, but the guy at ClickAway said the price could be way above the minimum $300 he quoted me so maybe it was way below half the price.
