I loved this place! Immediately fell in love upon walking in, the interior is so classy -- reminds me of a speakeasy/modern mashup! The space looks small, but looks can be deceiving! Came here for a goodbye party with a few coworkers. We ordered the chicken and waffles sliders, handcut fries, Cobb salad deviled eggs, grilled octopus, black Thai tuna, lobster bao buns, and general Tso chicken wings. We all really enjoyed the cocktails as well! I ordered the poptail and it was served so cutely with a popsicle! Very strong, but maybe I'm just weak haha. Chicken and waffle sliders were really good, but I personally am not a huge fan of buffalo sauce, but my coworkers were raving about them! Handcut fries -- who doesn't love fries? But that French onion mayo? YUM. Wow, possibly the best thing ever. Cobb salad deviled eggs had mixed reviews because one coworker really liked them but one didn't, I unfortunately didn't try them. Grilled octopus was so good, highly recommend! Even my coworkers who never tried octopus loved it! Grilled perfectly and not too salty! Black Thai tuna -- MUST try, it was so fresh and flavorful! The fried wontons were a really great touch, I could even eat these alone they were SO good! Lobster bao buns -- my coworker really liked these, I unfortunately didn't try them, but I would definitely get it next time I go. General Tso wings was something I ordered and I personally would've loved them had they not been drenched in sauce. This could just be a personal preference, but I found them to be way too sweet with all the sauce it came with, which is why I gave it a 4 instead of a 5. I've been out to The Charles many times for drinks on late Friday and Saturday nights. It's never been the cleanest or classiest place but I've had fun. However, my last experience was particularly unpleasant. The DJ played Kanye West which, in light of current events my friends and I found to be pretty offensive. In his defense, we probably could've asked nicer for him to switch the songs but even after calming down and asking more gently, he completely brushed us off and instead of playing other artists, spitefully doubled down and continued playing more of his songs. This may seem trivial but its the culmination of small acts such as this that perpetuate antisemitism. This may be more of a reflection of the DJ than the venue but I sincerely hope that The Charles takes more care in vetting their DJs for such behavior going forward. We seated ourselves and was quickly waited on by the staff. The Charles has an awesome drink menu, was looking for the Tin man, but decided on the Summer Crush, which was really refreshing(Smirnoff strawberry vodka, agave, lemon basil and club soda), not too sweet at al. They also have a really good sangria and when you check in on yelp you get a free Sangria. Since this is more of a tapas bar, the menu is pretty limited, they have a few sandwiches and 3 main big plates. So we just kept it basic, you cannot go wrong with their Chuck's burger, and I had the Dirty Jerz, which is an Italian sausage and peppers. The bead that was used on the Dirty Jerz was really toasted nicely with butter. Would love to come back for brunch, they have a good bottomless for $15, you really cant beat that at all. Another good tip, The Charles has been the hot spot to hold events in the Fed Hill area, the venue is rather large to hold up to 400 people, so if your organization would like to hold an event, this is the place to go. read more

He was so kind and friendly said no problem. I looked homeless but obviously I am not. If he treats a homeless person so kind, how much better do you think he'll treat you as the paying customer? Came for drag bingo which they host every first and third Wednesday of the month. Washington Heights (and friends) put on an amazing show. The bar and wait staff were super friendly, helped break larger bills to tip the queens, and were very attentive. Wednesdays are "Brunch Happy Hour" and the $15 all-you-can-drink for brunch drinks is a great deal as well, and the staff make sure your glass stays full. The only thing that caused the loss of the star is the specific food I ordered. The fries we got to the table needed a bit more salt but were otherwise fried well and came with a great dipping sauce..... The wings however....were awful. Do not get them . They are baked instead of fried and while cooked through the skin was bland and flabby. There also was not enough sauce to give any real flavor (I got what the menu said was Cajun honey), and the soggy broccoli it came with did not add anything to the plate. All that said, the chicken and waffle sliders at another table smelled delicious, as did the breakfast burger so give other things on the menu a shot. I came here for an event and everything was so impressive! The backdrop upstairs is perfect for those people who love to get their insta photos. And the staff is friendly, accommodating, and does not skip a beat, even when it gets busy. I only had a sampling of the food, but the Moroccan Cauliflower and Burger . To wash it down, I had the Tin Man which was a cool take on a Moscow Mule. They also have their house made sangria (which is on the sweeter side) and wine from the tap. I got the fried avocado for appetizer, there's no flavor to it whatsoever, the only flavor is coming from the pickle which is pretty small.. I got scallops for the entree and the portion size was ridiculous. I got two small scallops in bland sauce and that was it... I don't know how they call this an entree. this was honestly such a sad experience because my friend and i heard such good things about this place. our waitress practically ignored us the entire duration from us being seated to us leaving. we had asked about the happy hour drinks yet she hardly came around to ask us our order and so we didn't even order any. i had ordered a steak salad and i asked for medium and my steak came out like jerky--not enjoyable. and we waited approx. 35 minutes to get our check after trying to flag someone down and eventually got checked out by someone else. only thing i could recommend is the buffa-que wings, those were good. read more

If you're looking to try a swanky new restaurant in Charm City, you need to check out The Charles. I went for a brunch and everything was absolutely delicious, however standouts were the bread platter, the benedict, the pork belly sliders, and the split milk & cookies. The platter was exceptional - it (pound cake, an everything bagel and an english muffin) was all baked fresh and served with the yummiest butter I've ever tasted. The benedict was fairly standard, but it was well done so I wanted to shout it out. The slider entree was definitely the most interesting dish out of the bunch! I wasn't sure how I was gonna feel about the honey glazed donut "buns," but the flavors all came together beautifully. The apple slaw's acidity balanced out the sweetness of the buns and the saltiness of the pork. Anddd last but not least, the split milk & cookies dessert. Popped in for drinks for a night out and stayed way longer than expected. The drinks were good, however there was one glass of wine that I didn't particular care for. The bartender, was nice to give me something else that I would enjoy. The decor is really cool, I would highly recommend this place for a late night of dancing. We ended up walking upstairs to check out the scene and found the real party. There is a bar upstairs and a DJ was playing music. Great concept. A much needed change to the Federal Hill party/bro scene. Interior decor and ambience is very nice. Upscale but not over the top. The noise level is just right to have a conversation without struggling or without others listening. The food was good too! Nothing life changing, but it wasn't bad. We ordered five dishes and one desert. All of which were perfect for sharing and just the right amount to get a taste of each dish but not to be overwhelmed. When a new spot opens in Fed Hill, it feels like everyone takes notice. The revamp of Mad River into The Charles is definitely a welcome addition. The space is sleek and has ditched the sleezy late night vibe. Chef Cory Pastor has done a great job with the menu (which is no surprise, he came from The Nickel Taphouse which is one of my longtime favorites.) The menu has plenty of small plates to share which includes tons of creative vegetarian options. My friend and I were in a 'try everything on the menu' type of mood, so we shared everything. (Totally the move here, all the plates are on the smaller size.) The meal started with Caprese Crostini which was great for sharing. The basil ricotta was so creamy, the tomatoes were fresh, but the real highlight was balsamic caviar. It was made from agar agar and gave the dish some lovely bursts of balsamic. The first thing that really jumped out to me was the Nashville Hot Avocado. It's tempura fried and spicy with bread and butter zucchini pickles. For sure, I need way more of this in my life. The creaminess from the avocado matched the spiciness perfectly. I was so into this dish. Going off of a tip from a friend, we went with the Curried Gnocchi - this was a vegetarian dish done right! The sweet potato gnocchi was pillowy and soft and packed with tons of flavor. We inhaled this dish and it was the highlight of the meal for sure. Another favorite were the Grilled Wings. They're cooked using a sous vide tool so they are fall off the bone tender. The general tso sauce was super flavorful making this dish the perfect combination of sweet and spicy. I was also a huge fan of the broccoli that made this dish a fun riff on chicken and broccoli. I'll pick saucy broccoli over most things so those bites were some of my favorite. The waiter's favorite dish on the menu is the Chicken & Waffle Sliders and I'm so glad we listened to his recommendation. The waffle was super light and the chicken was also so tender and smothered in sauce - just how I like it. Another winner from Chef Cory's kitchen. Fries are my weakness. When I saw Cool Ranch Fries with French Onion Mayo I knew these needed to be in my life. The fries were so crispy and I could not get enough of the dipping sauces. I kept going back and fourth between the french onion mayo and the spicy ketchup. Obviously we couldn't leave without trying dessert. They all sounded so good. We opted to start with the more traditional sounding desserts, the Spilt Milk + Cookies. This dish for sure brings out your inner child with chocolate chip cookie dough over a light vanilla custard. This was such a classic tasty combo. The manager said his favorite dessert was the Honey Sundae and of course this was also delicious. The seared poundcake was so sweet in the most perfect way, and the scoop of burnt honey ice cream was slightly bitter but played with the cake so nicely. But the best part of this dish was the honey cake croutons. Oh my goodness. Get to The Charles definitely save room for dessert. read more

On a slightly different note, I had the pleasure of working with the owner and event coordinator of The Charles for a professional school formal event, themed as a masquerade ball. The venue holds 265-300 persons as a comfortable size, not too crammed, I believe up to a maximum of about 400. I was not only impressed by the timely response of emails and "classy factor" of the venue-- especially at night with soft bar lighting, a few candles as centerpieces, and balloons as decorations-- but also the flexibility and patience with mishaps during the planning process. Upon request, the chef made a creamsicle flan dessert that was very well received. For events, they also take custom recipes; I requested a raspberry mousse in mini martini glasses and it came out exactly as imagined, if not more spectacular in presentation. You absolutely cannot go wrong with the food or drink selection here. My personal drink favorite before discovering that "everything is good" after planning events, is the happy hour menu sangria (comes in a huge glass) for only $4. It was honestly the best glass of sangria I ever had. For food, you must try the BLT biscuits... the pork belly has the perfect blend of juicy & crispy, a hint of tomato jam for sweetness, all bursting with flavor in the perfect buttermilk biscuit. People can vouch for me I definately could not control myself and ordered 3-4 servings of this one dish in one sitting... that's how good it was A hidden gem in the heart of downtown Baltimore. Dealing with someone out of town can usually get a little haywire, but Lauren was informative, attentive, easy to get a hold of, offered suggestions & efficient. The balcony space offered a nice flow with an intimate feel for our daughter and her party guests. We chose the space because my daughter had been to a similar event at The Charles and thought it would work nicely for what she wanted for her celebration. She was right! My husband and I just had our wedding reception at The Charles this past Saturday. We worked with Lauren, the Sales & Events Coordinator for months leading up to our party and she could not have been more helpful! She was full of ideas and tips for us, and even came up with and "inspiration" board to show us some of her ideas for our decorations. She created a hashtag for our reception and we were supplied with tables and high tops, as well as chalkboards and frames for decorations. Lauren was easy to reach and there for us to field any questions we had - we were also brought in for menu tastings and to tour the space! When it came to the night of, Lauren was onsite the whole time and readily available to help out. All of the staff we worked with were great, and the bartenders working our event were stellar as well. The whole night was seamless. I was approached by many friends and guests commenting how incredible the food was (we had a Mac and cheese bar, chicken & waffle sliders, veggie & cheese sliders, lobster Rangoon) and commenting how much they loved the space/vibe of the bar. It was truly the perfect venue for what we wanted. We rented out the upstairs- which had a dance floor, ample seating, a bar and bathrooms so we had everything we needed. Can't recommend enough! I had to choose a place for our company to have drinks during a convention a couple of weeks ago - there are lots of places to choose from - in fact, overwhelming. Many were considered, but at the end of the day, the only place for our group (about 25 people) was The Charles. Why? because of the superb talents of Lauren Bosk - she is the reason I chose the Charles over all others. I really needed and appreciated her expertise in planning drinks, food, and space. She was fast to reply to my questions, and quickly figured out what would work best for us - took a load off of my plate. Wrong side of town for this. VIP Area? Bottle Service? While this place drives out the trash that you find in some other fed hill bars you have to pay the price for it. I didn't find anything on the menu appealing for the prices and they don't carry Bud Light. (Coors or Miller only). Hopefully after a few months of overcharging this place will calm down and become a usual Fed Hill bar. The remodeling on the insides does look extremely nice. read more

Was visiting from Philly and saw this event on Facebook for Drag Bingo. I had soooo much fun. The wings were good. The mozzarella balls would've been better if they weren't swimming in marinara sauce causing them to get soggy. But the Drag Bingo was so fun. They were very entertaining and so funny. I got tore up (very drunk) from too free shots and my girlfriend and I shared a Mega Mule (a 128oz drink that I practically drank most of). Glad I spent my last night in Maryland here. Been here twice for different events. Not like regular sports bar, this place is fancy and classy. The space has high ceilings with a second level assessable by stairs (bars on both floors). The highest wall is decorated with top shelf liquors and LED screens, which is great for event holding and marketing. Booths and seating are very limited but it is spacious enough for no visitor to feel cramped. The venue has great acoustics and the DJ never failed to keep the crowd happy. Haven't tried much of their food yet but I do had the fanciest strawberry there. They have this white chocolate-covered strawberries with edible sparkle that is so pretty and surprisingly tasty and refreshing. Favorite drink: House Red Sangria. Here's my letter to management to which I recieved no response, I am writing to express my profound disappointment in last night "burlesque" NYE party. I found many aspects of the experience wanting. I was so excited to spend the evening with a lovely burlesque show what I got instead was a single girl dancing for less than 2 songs in a window that I could barely, if at all, see. I was also frustrated that the security that was visible everywhere and the beginning of the night seemed to suddenly disappear later in the evening. When a fight broke out upstairs I ended up with a banged up knee after being knocked across the table by the "gentleman" involved. When I sought ice I was assured a manager would come speak with me and none ever arrived. My expectation was for a classy, "premium" New Years experience what I got was just another Baltimore bar full of sloppy drunks, disgusting floors, poorly monitored and poorly behaved guest, barely competent bartenders (she seriously asked me what is in a mimosa!) and food that needless disappeared well before midnight. In short, I would like to request a refund as I most certainly did not get the experience I paid for. My friend and I recently celebrated our birthdays at The Charles for the third year in a row and we've continuously been impressed! Awesome atmosphere, friendly and attentive staff, and perfect space for private events. Lauren, the sales director, made booking our event super easy and is great with communicating expectations and details. Not to mention, she manages to surprise us EVERY year with a birthday treat and is always thinking of new ideas! In addition to private parties, Lauren hosts numerous special events throughout the year and has coordinated my friend's dancing and fitness events that have had great turnouts. I love that she is creative and wants her guests to have a lot of fun!
