This is the old Tia Betty Blues. Small spot with outdoor and indoor seating. The owners take great pride in their restaurant and it shows. Everything is made fresh and in house, even their coffee syrups, which you must try! We had the brown sugar latte and it was heavenly. You order at the counter then go find a seat. My friend and I sat outside. It was a very warm day and there were a lot of flies outside. We got our lattes right away but it took a little time for our food. I ordered the churro special. They were fine. Nothing too special. I wouldn't not order them again. We both got the Elote Benito, which is a freshly made corn cake based eggs Benedict. This was beautiful and so very good! It's a large serving and neither of us finished ours. I think next time I may split it! The corn cake was so fresh and tasty! The eggs were cooked perfectly, and the hollandaise sauce was spot on. The dish came with a lovely side salad as well. I will definitely go back but only when the weather is more mild. This spot is a great place to meet a friend and have a wonderful cup of coffee and a really lovely meal. Be ready to find somewhere to sit and be patient. Chancla leveraged the legendary Tia Betty's and created an equally creative and artful brunch experience. I was dismayed to find Betty's closed suddenly, having let go by a year or more without dropping in, but Chancla does an admirable job of filling her shoes with crafty blends of ingredients and flavors for a unique menu of food and bevies. I had the elote benito (I think that was the name) that was a corncake-based bennie, simply divine, along with the maple french toast that was to DIE for. The cappuccino was exactly right, and though they'd run out of the hibiscus punch, the watermelon substitute fit the bill nicely. It wasn't cheap, but the price was certainly on par with what we've come to expect from crafty brunch places. ~$50. It's an order at the counter kind of place, so there's no formal table service, but they delivered the food (after a notable wait for the post-rush patronage, maybe 20 minutes or so), and came back around to bus some tables in time to hit them up for a to-go box. It is a bit stuffy inside, and the patio is not particularly airy - it's a coyote fence away from San Mateo traffic - so I wouldn't give it 5 stars on ambiance. But that's not always a deal breaker when the fare is legit, and the service is friendly. read more

Ordering was straight forward, For our number and on to the patio. Chicken Fried Steak for me & the Elote Benny for my companion. It was definitely a wait to get the food. The CFS was different, not bad just different. The steak was decent size, gravy good, it came on a bed of green chile, corn and squash. Not bad - just different. The Elote Benedict was a lot of food. The corn was fried into a cake, topped with eggs, pickled onions, avocado & hollandaise sauce, with squash on the side. Excellent taste, not a lot of seasoning and egg perfectly cooked. The Chancla is literally the wise old tale of "don't judge a book by its cover". It's a little restaurant has its own parking (yay!) and indoor plus outdoor seating. We were lucky to get outdoor seating and had a quiet morning together. The mocha latte was like it was from a cafe coffee shop. Totally worth it and nothing like diner coffee I've unfortunately had in other well known restaurants. Speaking of, every meal we received was top notch comfort breakfast. The potatoes were extra crispy, fluffy, and well seasoned. There was a generous amount of perfectly cooked bacon, creamy eggs, and balanced out by a simple English muffin toast. My GF friend, and I both enjoyed the Elotes Benito with fresh hollandaise and corn fritters. She took half of hers home, but I had skipped breakfast on purpose and devoured all of mine. The Chancla is a new place in town with an attractive menu for breakfast and lunch. It is a familiar and rustic place at the corner of Ross and San Mateo. We met with a friend to finally try this place. Candice was very attentive and friendly, welcoming us with a great smile and energy. We ordered the chancla, the creamy chicken chilaquiles, and the carne adovada burrito. The food took a while, even though there were not too many people. The chancla was by far the best of the dishes, with delicious and spicy chorizo. The red and green sauces are bright, spicy, and unique. The burrito needed the adovada to be marinated and unfortunately it had more potatoes than meat. The chilaquiles had perfectly fried tortillas with a delicious green salsa, but it was not creamy and the chicken by itself was plain in flavor. The side guacamole was really good! Overall, this is a promising new place with killer red and green salsas and legit chorizo. They have taken feedback from their patrons to improve their menu, which to me is priceless. Next time, I may get the chancla for myself or the tres leches French toast. read more

We visited The Chancla during Balloon Fiesta week after the morning ascension, and it was the best decision we made! There was only one other table, so there wasn't any wait at all. The space is cute and cozy inside, with a little patio outside for enjoying the sunshine. My husband ordered the Country Scramble but asked for over-easy eggs instead. Not technically a scramble, but they were happy to accommodate, and he loved it. Our son got the Kid's French Toast, and his eyes practically popped out of his head when the server placed it in front of him. He couldn't have been more excited and completely demolished it. My husband snuck a bite and confirmed it was delicious. I had the gluten-free Banana Bread French Toast with a side of over-medium eggs and gluten-free red chile, and it was absolutely fantastic. Thank you, The Chancla, for proving that gluten-free doesn't have to be boring or flavor-free. I can't tell you how much I appreciate you giving gluten-free diners real choices beyond the basics! The Chancla was pretty good, the owners were the only ones working today so the food took a bit to come out, but not any longer than expected with just one cook. I ordered their Chancla dish, which was very tasty with red and green chile, the chorizo was delicious! My wife had the poached eggs with turkey meal with bacon bits and a side kale salad which was very fresh tasting. The inside is small and a bit cramped but not an issue for us. I had been wanting to try this place as I heard about it on social media. My MIL and I stopped by here for brunch and enjoyed all of our food. The only thing that we weren't a huge fan of was the lack of seating, there were only about 8 tables and if it gets super busy, expect to wait for a table or take it to go. The Chancla is good, but you should be aware of a couple negative things before you jump in the car and head over. First off, the ventilation system is not up to the task: you will come away smelling like the grill (this is a deal breaker for some of my friends). Secondly, the delicious-looking/no-price-displayed cinnamon rolls towered on the counter? They're $7 _each_ (we each got one) - and, while they're made in-house and the sweet counterwoman bragged on them, they're only regular-sized and not really all that good. As in, I didn't finish mine (if you knew me, you'd be horrified). They're _okay_, just not great - but the $7 each pricing is escandaloso. Okay, that's out of the way: here's the good stuff. Cute, funky space (apparently with living quarters up top) - it was really cold while we were there and snow flurried outside; I'd expect it'll be really warm when the summer gets going. Decent amount of seating (and there's a nice patio outside) and parking. The counterwoman was just as lovely as can be, and efficient. It took a while to get our food because we were at the tail end of a lot of folks coming in on a weekend morning and they obviously make the food to order from scratch. The $10.50 french toast with fruit and real maple syrup was a hit and a good value. The $16 chicken fried steak was really delicious: it was purportedly 8 oz., but I'm pretty sure mine was larger than that, and it was coated in a fantastic crunch and topped with bacon and parsley as well as a nice cream gravy (Cholula, catsup and Tabasco are available should you want to modify). The steak itself was done to a very nice medium and had that good chew that you want - it was tender enough to be cut with a regular knife (they give you a steak knife nevertheless) but it had all the chew that a man wants on a bite of beef. And no gristle or fat lumps anywhere - it was just very good. The CFS had _very good_ calabacitas on the side: somewhat unusual in that the squash was cut pretty thick, but it was cooked perfectly and - well, it was just delicious. (You know how everyone does theirs a little different? Well, the Chancla folks do a good job.) So . . . I'd not get the cinnamon roll again. But I'd happily have another Chancla chicken fried steak tomorrow - yum. I really hope they do well - and suspect they will (people kept rolling through the whole time we were there - regular Albuquerque crowd, not shi-shi or anything). I'll be back - but I might wait to bring ladies until the weather is right for sitting outside, because that grill smell is not something they'd want in their hair. read more

Ok, when you first walk up you may question whether to walk in. Once inside it is clear why this place has such glowing reviews. First, the smells emanating from the kitchen make you think you are in a close friend's home, not a restaurant. Second, the counter staff were so welcoming with recommendations and suggestions. And finally, the food was nothing short of five stars. We had the chilaquiles extra hot with chicken and the smothered pork burrito. We added eggs since, well breakfast. The blue corn chips with the hot green chili and the creamy eggs and beans, chefs kiss! The burrito was filled with pork and cheese and green chili sauce. So good you would think about slapping your mother but then you remember how The Chancla got its name. Get yourself over to this great little place. When it was Tia Betty Blues we always sat upstairs, but that was closed so the bottom is pretty crowded and noisy. Food was solid, but honestly I was expecting it to be uber amazing based on the reviews and pics. We enjoyed the ELOTE BENITO, a perfectly poached set of eggs served on a crispy Jeremy-made corn fritter, smothered but not overwhelming hollandaise, oh-so-fresh calabacitas, avacado, cotija & chili powder​. Tres Leches French Toast, a beautiful soft by sturdy bread, bathed in some sort of honey heaven, freshly whipped cream, blueberries-raspberries-strawberries. Ordered a side of bacon. Me and my partner were regulars here simply because how kind they were initially when they first opened. The food when they first opened was amazing and slowly as we began coming it became much more mediocre. We went in and it was busier than usual. I sat down right away because I've done that countless times before while my partner ordered food. After he paid, the lady in the front belittled him because I sat down and "reserved a seat". If there was a sign that said "wait to be seated" I would have never sat down. There's no reason to belittle him after he paid and tipped FOR ME SITTING DOWN WHEN THEYVE NEVER TOLD US ANYTHING BEFORE. Mind you an elderly couple in front of us did the same thing but they were told nothing... They loved us when they had no customers but now when there's more we are treated poorly?
