My wife ordered the Spicy Chicken Sandwich. It was large and half of it went home with us. It was home by evening time. Ordered a plate of rosemary infused tallow fries to share. We came here for Mother's Day brunch and left very disappointed. Let me preface this by saying there was no mention of a buffet when making the reservation. First of all it was so expensive for super nasty food, all dried out buffet food with pans of pasta or spinach eggs nearly emptied. It was disgusting. The pork loin was awful, it made my mouth incredibly dry. All the food was awful. Our waitress wasn't too bad, but how hard is it to wait on a table that is forced to eat a disgusting buffet?? Passing thru Tulsa and needed a quick, good lunch. Jumped on Yelp and was led to the Chalkboard. Immediately walking in I thought it was very well decorated. It's in a hotel, so it definitely has hotel cafe vibes. I got the avocado toast and my companion got the French dip. The food was good, and came out quickly. This restaurant is in the bottom level of a hotel and there are two lots available for parking. You walk into the building and down 4 stairs to the restaurant level. We were seated quickly as they weren't too busy. The interior is really pretty and bright. It has a more upscale feel which is reflected in the lovely smelling bathroom and the nicer and heavier drinking classes that match the wall color. Our waitress was friendly and quick to offer recommendations, which I love. I ordered the American breakfast with eggs, bacon, potatoes, Gluten free toast and hollandaise sauce. They serve house made jelly (raspberry or blueberry) I got the raspberry and it was really good. The hollandaise sauce was decent but I didn't like it enough to want to go back to try the eggs Benedict. My husband got the short ribs and it was burnt and crusty on the outside. The mash potatoes and veggies needed seasoning. The sides were extremely plain. I got the chicken Caesar salad. This place has gone way downhill. We were the only table there but service was slow and food was bad. Salmon was way too salty and extremely fishy, not fresh. Lamb lollipops were slow and came out raw after forgetting one. Beef Wellington app tasted like something out of the freezer section. Meat and cheese board was served with 3 crackers and we had to ask several times to get more. Some guy who was not our server came out of the kitchen and was rude to us. Ceasar salad was flavorless. Wedge salad was good and huge. We made the mistake of also ordering room service breakfast. They brought one of the cappuccinos we ordered cold and gross, they didn't bring the other. The omelette was tiny and they didn't bring the requested salsa or ketchup. Just disappointing at both meals. Location is convenient if you're staying at the hotel but just skip it. I have eaten at the Chalkboard more times than I can count as you can tell by my many photos attached here. I used to come in for breakfast on Monday mornings before heading to the airport to fly out for work. I would stop in on weekends for the dinner sometimes as well. I LOVE the ambience of the restaurant. It has such a cozy vibe. The staff that works in the morning is consistently incredible, but almost every time I have visited in the evening I have had a negative experience. I wish this weren't the case because I am a little burned out from the breakfast menu items and would like to explore the dinner menu more. It would also be nice if they'd revamp the menu more often or at the very least add some specials. I have been meaning to write this review for a while but was always hesitant due to the food vs service experience. I recently dined here after driving from home an hour away to have the braised short rib (my favorite). I had made a reservation and once I was seated I had a waiter with a weird vibe. Almost, as if it pained him to speak to me. I glanced in my bag to grab my phone and realized I had forgotten my wallet at home in a different purse. I asked the hostess if I could use apple pay or else I'd have to leave. She assured me that it was fine and apply pay could be used. She then returned to tell me that the waiter told her that apple pay could not be used even though she had let me know other customers have been able to do so in the past. I felt very sighted because why would others be able to pay this way, but not myself? I had already figured that my evening experience would be negative based off of the past and the attitude that the waiter had when he arrived at my table. I was incredibly disappointed because of the long drive wasted and rude service. He saw me as I got up to leave and tried his hardest not to make eye contact. This used to be my favorite place to dine in Tulsa and I am very sad that probably won't ever visit here for dinner again. We have visited The Chalkboard several times in the last 20+ years, and we are always so pleased. This time we were here to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary, and, as usual, it did not disappoint. The restaurant has recently been remodeled, and the new decor is beautiful. It's elegant, dark, and romantic, and it adds to the overall dining experience. Tonight, Alicia was our server, and she was perfect! She was the best blend of attentive and respectful of our space. She was friendly and welcoming, and she was informative and knowledgeable about the food options. We started with an appetizer of lamb lollipops. They were breaded and fried to a perfect crisp. They were accompanied by a very flavorful and delicious slaw and 2 dipping sauce options. For the entrée, I had the 6oz filet with fondant potatoes and vegetables. The filet was lovely- cooked as requested with a delicious char. The potato was tender, and the veggies were perfect! So much flavor on a plate. My husband ordered the beef Wellington. It was also cooked to his requested temperature, and he said it was delicious. His meal came with asparagus and orzo which was incredible. For dessert we shared bread pudding. It was served warm with raspberry and white chocolate sauces as well as fresh blueberries and strawberries. It was served warm, and it was also very good. Overall, our experience was great! Thanksgiving dinner was horrible, and wait staff was worse. The waitress had huge balls of hardware dangling out of her nose which made all four of us attempt to avoid looking at her. The food was tasteless and the charge for each meal was $60 per person, which would have been fine if the food and service had been up to par as one would expect at an upscale restaurant. The servings were extremely small, and the dessert slices of pie were laughable. People all around us were commenting about the serving sizes, and the service in general. For this occasion, we made a dinner reservation at The Chalkboard as they offer shuttle service for some events at the BOK and we had concert tickets. All of the staff were so helpful and attentive! Our hostess got us all set up for the shuttle and our waiter made the best dinner recommendations, including ordering half salads that were plenty when paired with a shared app and dessert! The Chalkboard Kitchen is a restaurant that should be exploding with exceptional reviews. If the food matched the ambiance, Google and Yelp would be forced by customer demand to add a star to the rating scale. There are in fact, many enticing 5 stars reviews on both the Yelp and Google platforms. But the negative reviews, describing mediocre dining experiences are too recurrent. Discerning diners expect perfection, when the restaurant is posh and they have to open their wallets wide, to buy a plate of food. The Chalkboard Kitchen has been on my to-try list for years. Today is the day. I had my mind set on a delicious Wedge Salad and a cup of soup. Wanting to eat a fairly simple meal today. Well, I am still hoping to find that delicious Wedge Salad someday, somewhere in Tulsa. The tomatoes had gone bad days ago. Limp mushy little red sacks. A pile of lettuce. The salad was not the crisp, fresh dense, sharp cut wedge I had imagined. Plenty of Blue Cheese crumbles and bacon didn't make up for the disappointing salad. Check the picture. The soup wasn't bad. An unusual cumin potato soup with a few cilantro or parsley leaves. My wife had the mild tasting crab cake burger with great fries. Decent, no complaints. My wife loved the comfortable, classy ambiance of the restaurant a lot. I agree it is one of the nicest that I have been in, in Tulsa. The décor created the ambiance. The pictures I posted describe the setting more accurately and efficiently than I can with words. The staff is friendly, personable and attentive. Good service. So, it is time to pay the bill. What can I say about this place?.. the avocado toast is top tier! These avocados they used are creamy and delicious. They must be from California. The hard boiled egg over medium was a happy surprise as I've never had it prepared on my toast like this before. There was a nice vinaigrette avocado dressing which was definitely needed because that goat cheese was definitely goat cheesing. lol. All and all hands down, 8/10 for my meal. Services: 5/10..Service was lacking at first. It took us exiting and coming back, waiting 10 minutes, and then me walking into the kitchen to ask if we could sit anywhere. Keep in mind this was after I left to ask the front desk if the restaurant was actually open for guest. We were staying at the Marriott hotel that's attached. Amazing historic property by the way. Now back to the restaurant there was maybe 6 other customer in this establishment, who were all sitting together. It was pretty much empty on a Saturday morning. Maybe the waitress was also the cook. Idk. It felt like they either didn't care or were understaffed, because I would hate that it be the tone of "old Tulsa" showing its true intentions in " new Tulsa". The Chalkboard is easily one of my favorite spots in Tulsa. My wife and I have been coming here for more than 20 years. Located beneath the Ambassador Hotel, this is a fantastic dining experience, and I have had nothing but great meals and service. Our typical dishes include the Beef Wellington and Filet. This last visit we added the Lamb Lollipops as an appetizer, and were not disappointed. They were very tender & flavorful. An excellent recommendation. The dining room has been updated recently, and the atmosphere is romantic and, dare I say, brooding (in the best way). I felt like I was in a secret, underground club (which it sort of is). They do a great job at setting the mood, and making you comfortable. Round out the experience by spending a night or two at the Ambassador as well. Coming and going from the restaurant is easy, and you never have to leave the comforts of the hotel. Highly recommended. read more

Fried green tomatoes - tomatoes were not ripe and thus lacked flavor. A prime green tomato bares flavor that's a tad acidic and a bit soft. These were noticeably picked too early. Although the flavor of the tomato itself was absent, the crust enshrining it couldn't cover its essence. With hints of sage and garlic, the tomatoes crust didn't overcome the natural missing flavors of the green tomato. The Chalkboard (Beef Wellington) - It was cooked medium-well. The crust was perfect. The meat was also cooked perfectly. It was smaller than expected but was good. The asparagus was overcooked. The orzo was not as creamy as expected. It lacked seasonings (lack garlic and Parmesan) leaving much about this tasty pasta desirable. Airline Fried Chicken- the chicken was tender but lacked seasonings. Obvious was the absence of flavor within the chicken. Outside, the crust was more soft than crunchy. And the yearning for flavor was not met by the relative similar seasonings achieved from a home cook. Yet where the chicken lacked, the cornbread subsided the need for flavor. The service was exceptional. From walking in without a reservation to being served. From the host to the server. Each graciously accompanied a stellar service worthy of 5 stars. And even after a slight mixup with the foods being served at the wrong table, the server corrected the plate bearers mistake with apologizing. On another final note, there, for some, was a bit of annoyance with the foot traffic from hotel to the restaurant. At the back of the restaurant is a doorway where hotel guest can enter and exit. Throughout the service, hotel guest would through the dining room to reach the host or visit the bar. With groups of people, about 3 and sometimes 4, walking through the dining room it could detract from a moment in a romantic date. For me this plausible annoyance was not an issue. read more

We were staying in the Ambassador Hotel which is attached and due to the inclement weather, we decided to try out this restaurant, and we're so glad we did. The restaurant is accessible through the Ambassador Hotel as well as a street-level entrance. Pre-appetizer we were served some bread with tangy lime-honey butter. This was great and really had a nice zing to it. For an appetizers got the crab cakes which was served with a dollop of caviar on a bed of a pepper relish- oh my word...these crab cakes were exquisite and probably the absolute best ones I've had ever. For our main entrees, I got the daily fish, which was Chilean Sea Bass and my husband got the Beef Wellington. First, I must elaborate on the perfect dish that was served to me. It had a bright lemon butter sauce and the fish was cooked to perfection. It was served on a bed of arugula and potatoes, and was topped off with a breaded fried egg. All the flavors harmonized well and I really appreciated the touch of adding edible flowers which were a really elevated touch. My husband's dish; the Beef Wellington was also cooked to perfection and the overall dish was fantastic! He typically dislikes mushrooms, but the flavors in this dish were so good, that he actually ate everything on his plate and enjoyed it! For dessert we had a Creme Fraiche cheesecake with a slight strawberry drizzle. Once again, the flavors were harmoniously paired and the cheesecake was smooth and not heavy. We happened to dine on a Wednesday night and it was rather quiet with only 2 other tables dining during our meal. The atmosphere is classy and chic. The team is also taking masking and social distancing seriously, which is much appreciated. Our waiter was also perfectly attentive and pleasant. We've been to fine dining restaurants all over the world, and The Chalkboard is definitely a special place with fresh farm-to-table foods that will remain a memorable experience. The potato thing as a side was underwhelming. I didn't try the shrimp cocktail or the Wellington but those that ordered them seemed pleased. My old Fashioned tasted good but served without the correct ice. Not pictured was the very undercooked pork chop. Also not pictured was the pricey crab cake. Yes. ONE crab cake. We recently visited The Chalkboard to celebrate our friend's birthday. The food was average, but the service was absolutely terrible. We had high hopes given the reviews and we wanted to love this place. The live music was a nice touch for Tulsa, but dinner took over two and a half hours. Most of the time was spent with an empty glass waiting on food. My husband's Guinness was a short pour, the restaurant ran out of the only chicken dish on the menu, and we only saw our waitress a handful of times to name a few of the issues.
