I tried this place out with two locals when I visited my hometown of South Bend, IN. I was impressed. I've seen some of the Yelper comments on the quality of service and obviously the management has taken it into consideration as our server, Rex, was OUTSTANDING! He was always around with water to fill our glasses and came by regularly to check on us. (We were there for 4 hours! It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon and we sat out on the patio.) One time I asked for a glass of ice to put into our cocktails since the weather was in the 80's, and after that one request, Rex brought fresh ice in a glass along with the water several times. Now, that is paying attention to the customer! We ordered one of the Bruschetta Boards where you could select two choices for $13 and four for $22. We selected the Andouille sausage, the Prosciutto, the Sliced Apple and the Fresh Strawberries for our four items. Various spreads (fig, apricot) and cheeses (fontina, bleu, brie and cream cheese) were the accompaniments to the bruschetta and each one popped and tasted great. Rex's attention to detail was also noticed when the board came, as he made sure each item was sliced into three sections, one for each of us. The cocktails are amazing and some of them come with some great names, such as the Granger Stepmom and Real Housewives of Granger, just to name a few. (Granger is a town outside of South Bend. It's an inside joke for us South Benders!) The decor inside is amazing, the bathrooms are gender neutral and clean, and the bar area is impressive. (See pictures.) The food is unbelievable. I'm serious. We randomly picked this spot hoping for something baby-friendly (it was! Calm spot). I got the Bahn Mi and it was completely delicious. My husband got the steak chimichurri sandwich, which was also very good, and I enjoyed the wine I picked as well. Great addition to the Howard Park / East Bank neighborhood! We stopped in on their opening night and grabbed a seat at the bar. Great selection of wines (reasonably priced too)! The menu has a great selection of shareable, charcuterie boards, bruschetta boards, flatbread, salads and paninis. We shared the Big Poppa flatbread with house made sauce, pepperoni, ham, ricotta, cheese, whole cloves of roasted garlic and topped with arugula - fantastic! I really wanted to like this place. I made a reservation for 5 at 5pm for a birthday celebration. Upon showing up and they say "sorry i thought you canceled your reservation" I did not. I called one time only to make the reservation 3 days prior. It took 15 mins for the server to greet us and service felt very rushed as she only check on us 3 times. My boyfriend and I came here right when they opened at 4:00 and had a lovely experience. The staff was very welcoming and took the time to chat with us. It felt very much like a family atmosphere. We sat at the bar and enjoyed everything we ordered from The Cellar Board to The Chocolate Board for dessert. We each got two different French wines slightly chilled at just the right temperature for those vintages. The wines we chose (Malbec and Red Blend) were excellent pairings with the boards we ordered. Wow!!! This place is amazing. The wife and I were looking for a place to have some upper tier wine. The Cellar did not disappoint. I like the ability to make my own flight. Most places you only have 2 or 3 choices of prepared flights. We had the baked bourbon Brie, veggie flat bread and finished off with a chocolate board. We had the arm chairs and small table, we could have sat there all evening. Very comfortable and relaxing. The manager came by and chatted with us several times. My fiancé and I were excited to try this place, it has been on our list for a while, however we were a bit disappointed. The wine list was good, and the wine I had had a good bold flavor and I enjoyed it. If you are looking for a small bite with a glass of wine before dinner, this is your spot. If you are wanting a meal, I would recommend going elsewhere. With the price of the food, you would think you would be getting more than you do. I'm sure the quality of ingredients is good, however, the food itself was not outstanding. The flatbread was good, but I'm sure you could get the same thing somewhere else for a lot less, and possibly better tasting. I did enjoy trying different items on the bruschetta board, but other than the andouille sausage, the food was average. The atmosphere of the place seem thrown together as well, it seemed like from the menu they wanted an upscale feel, but the inside just looked like a poorly decorated dining room. This time was extra nice, as they sat us by the window to give us a view of a drone show at Howard Park just across from us. It really made our evening special. The food was delicious as always - we shared the chef's special scallops, a small bottle of bubbles, and a few sides. I love that they have a bar area and table seating - they're separated at the door, but still maintains an open floor. The staff is always so welcoming which I really appreciate, because as a young married couple we often find "nicer" places often don't give us the time or courtesy you'd want. Never a problem here! This is a very good wine bar in a beautiful neighborhood of South Bend. The selection of wines by the glass is impressive. All of the selections are reasonably priced and they have some wines you can't find most other places. The service is friendly and attentive. The food is surprisingly good. We shared a hummus trio that was tasty, especially the black bean hummus. I ordered pad Thai with chicken. It was not even close to being authentic Thai, but I enjoyed it just the same. I can't complain about the food which was all good and sometimes great, but both my experiences at this new wine bar were dragged down by inattentive service. I hope the manager gets a handle on this problem before it's too late. We could literally SEE our servers on both occasions chatting with coworkers or just standing around the bar area while we were waiting and WAITING to have our orders taken and our check delivered. Also, on the first visit we could see our food sitting out on the counter waiting to be brought out while our server casually hung out at the bar. (Apparently this was identified as a problem because the kitchen staff had a bell to ring on the next visit.) The look of the place isn't my favorite either... It's a very Wine Mom aesthetic with signs ("Wine O'Clock"! Smh.) and words on the walls and an upsetting paint color (the color of ear wax, I think) in the dining area. The rustic wood and industrial lighting combo was hip... back in the 2000s; it will still probably appeal to the soccer mom crowd though, who I'm guessing is this place's target demographic. The food! I should probably discuss the food! The patatas bravas were a favorite of all my dinner companions. It's nice to have this dish back in town since Tapastrie closed. The bruschetta boards were good--the strawberry one was a standout--but skimpy. The Cellar board was just what you would expect (a standard charcuterie) but took a long time to be prepared (and there was no other customer in the restaurant at the time!). That was a puzzler. Why did it take so long to put some cheese and cold meats on a plate? The paninis were nice and bigger than expected. The pear salad was great and big enough to share. If it weren't for service, I'd return. Even though the Cellar has a larger menu, Ironhand (just down the street) offers a much better experience overall. read more

Very friendly and open to help you with questions. The owners are also great people who know how to make you feel welcomed. Do not be surprised if they are there helping out around the place. Driving 13 hours to visit our mother, my sister and I searched for a wine bar to grab a bite and a glass of decent wine. The Cellar Wine Bar and Kitchen did not disappoint!!!! Lovely wine flights and a charcuterie board not only hit the spot - but were truly delicious. We splurged on calories and snarfed up the Chocolate Board with more wine. You have to go there!!!!! Disappointed. We came for my daughter's birthday which the server didn't offer t help me with a special dessert or acknowledge. Bruchetta was good. Beet salad had no golden beets and some red beets at a very small dice, added chicken which was also tiny dice and minimal. The nuts and beets were at the bottom with some lettuce on top. Asked the server for some fresh cracked pepper for my salad and was told they only had a small pepper shaker. Wanted to love this place but won't be going back. I wanted to like this restaurant, but the food was very bland and not good quality. The server was decent but not what you'd expect from a place at this price point. They also nocked my wine over and didn't offer to replace it or do anything but just say sorry. The drinks didn't seem anything special, but admittedly that's not my area of expertise. For the price this place unfortunately fell short. Love the concept but for the price I'd expect good quality, better tasting menu items and friendly, personable, and helpful servers. My wife and I were super excited to try The Cellar before a show at the Morris, so I called to try and make a reservation to secure a table for dinner. I was told by the person on the phone that reservations were for groups of 8 and more and that the rest was first-come, first serve. Sadly, that rule must only apply to locals, because when we walked into the relatively empty restaurant, we were told by the hostess that all of the tables were reserved, even the small tables. When I said I had called and spoken with someone and was told I couldn't make a reservation for a party of two, she said, "Yeah, but Notre Dame people reserved tables for tonight." Apparently if you're associated with Notre Dame in any way this reservation rule doesn't apply? We've heard great things about the food and the atmosphere looked wonderful, but I feel kind of upset that we were mislead. Next time I'll wear a Notre Dame shirt when I call and hopefully I can get a reservation. read more

I have been the cellar several times. I love the atmosphere! Quiet enough for conversation but still full of energy. I had the blueberry mojito mocktail and it was almost as good as the real thing! The food is amazing, full of wonderful fresh flavors that are not the everyday, everywhere else fare. We (4 of us) selected a flatbread, a board, a salad and the brussel sprouts. It was more than enough food with a wide variety of tastes, we all loved it! We finished off with the chocolate board...what a treat!! The staff is friendly, attentive and helpful.
