So disappointed in this place. We had other plans to go elsewhere and a local shop owner talked us into this place. The place is called the cellar so you have to walk downhill to the back of the building so it's essentially "the cellar". The restaurant is small. Out of date. Dark. We saw their patio by the water and it isn't as nice as it sounds. There were wasps everywhere (which is no fault of their own) but the water was just green and brown and just not my personal preference so we opted to sit inside but it was hot. No air conditioning. The kept the back door open so obviously what would you expect. Flies. Lots and lots of flies. Everywhere. We stuck it out. The shop owner was raving about this place. We all ordered pop. 2 cokes and ginger ale. All flat. All returned and had water instead. CALAMARI was supposedly the best. Who doesn't love calamari!!? OMG it was rubbery. Hard. Chewy. And they deep fried as a whole piece. Not cut up. We were sawing thru the calamari like there was no tomorrow and all the breading just came off. You can see it in the picture already. 1/10 (COMPLETE FAIL) Next We decided to get poutine and share it. Their WlLD MUSHROOM POUTINE (Crispy french fries, served with real Quebec cheese curds, smothered in our famous wild mushroom cream sauce.) sounds yummy right?? No not what I expected. It wasn't the gravy I expected at all. It was a 5/10. The fries were crispy and well made that's about it. FISH & CHIPS. what can go wrong. It's so simple. Deep fried fish. Well it was so deep fried. That we could not cut thru the batter. It was chewy. Overcooked. And it was a literal shell of the batter left over. And only ate the inside of it. Fish was ok had it not been ruined by the batter. Again. Fresh cut crispy fries. 4/10 SHRIMP LINGUINE had 2 shrimp. Sauce was watery. Tomatoes were grape tomatoes didn't seem fresh. And mushrooms were just there. Not much taste. Bland. Something my kids would make at home and I would say is decent. 4/10. The server and everyone who worked there looked like all in their early 20s. They were "working". But I got the feeling they just don't care. Our server came to ask us how the food was and we told her When we told her about the calamari she said they get a lot of complaints about it and her answer was "that's how they cook it" (despite the complaints). I mean. Maybe you should listen to your customers and fix that??????? I do not recommend this place whatsoever. Should've just gone to the Elora mill or the other places that had good Google ratings and lots of ppl eating their food. How they have 4.4 Google rating is mind boggling. Spotted this restaurant to grab a quick bite. The menu displayed outside showed lunch menu is available until 5pm but the actual menu says 4pm. There's outdoor patio or inside seating as options. Opted for inside since it was extremely hot outside. There is no air conditioning inside. It's just a fan and it's was still hot sitting in. Moving on, the decor is very out-dated. If you step on the stairs to the washroom, please be mindful and careful of your steps. It's a hazardous with carpet overlapping the steps. The smell in the washroom is not very pleasant and also out-dated. No one poured water until you asked them. No one refill water when the cup was near empty and they ask you if you'd like to refill some water. They brought a jug for you to do it yourself. Ordered the pork schitzel with mashed potatoes, veggies and mushroom sauce on the side. The lady said the mushroom was free and part of the dish. End up getting charged for an axtra $5 and she denied she told us it was free. Batter was not very cripsy, slightly wet but flavour was just acceptable. Bbq sauce on the ribs were extremely sweet and thick. Almost felt like the sauce was purchased from groceries stores and just poured onto it at the end for flavour. It was not based and baked or grilled properly. Food took long to arrive. Overall experience wasn't positive. I would recommend trying Elora Mill next time and call in to make reservation at Elora Mill as they were fully booked. read more

June 30/21: This is a lazy 3* at best. The restaurant was set on a beautiful small river in Elora. Small but decent patio seating. What makes the meal is 3 things, ambiance, food & service. The ambiance was very nice. The service was mediocre & so was the food. Mine was the fish & chips. The fish was fantastic, the chips were limp & under cooked. The fish was Basa & was a very decent size. The server(s) seemed surly. Ours was Gemma. She seemed nice but there didn't seem to be any enthusiasm coming from here. We have counted The Cellar as a go-to spot for several years. This Saturday, October 12, we reserved a lunch time and showed up on time. The staff were rude, stressed and clearly overwhelmed. We entered and said we had a reservation. A server retorted we had to leave, go to the patio, and wait in line. We waited in line 20 minutes to finally be greeted by someone, who was rude to others waiting in line. Once seated, well after our reservation time, we waited another 10 minutes to see a server. The entire environment was one of chaos, stress and rude staff unable to cope. People were waiting for their drinks, their orders, their bills. We left without ordering, telling the server to give our table to someone else in line. All in all, a disgraceful display of staff incompetence and indifference to customers. We won't be going back for a long time. Elora has so many new and interesting alternatives. read more

Where do I even begin with the Cellar... my boyfriend and I are huge foodies and enjoy trying new places to eat. We decided to visit Elora on vacation and as we were walking downtown we found the Cellar. We put it on our list of restaurants to try before the end of our trip and I am so glad we did!!! We were seated on the patio that looks onto a gorgeous canal... so peaceful! First we decided to order a drink each and when they arrived, not only were they beautiful to look at but they were perfectly mixed! Next we decided to order the mushroom crostini as an appetizer... hands down the BEST app either of us have ever had! Crunchy bread, buttery mushrooms, sharp cheese, and fresh scallions made for a very enjoyable experience. My boyfriend ordered a shrimp pasta and it was delicious. Wasn't too creamy and heavy, had the perfect balance of flavours. The special of the day was ribs and being a rib lover It was a no brainer for me to try them :) so glad I did because they were the best ribs I've ever had (and I've eaten a lot of ribs) They fell off the bone and were full of flavour, the sauce had the perfect mix of tangy and sweet. The mashed potatoes were creamy and had ricotta mixed in, perfect texture and taste! The veggies were cooked perfectly as well. Service was over and above as well... the waitress had a huge smile, described the menu items in a friendly manner and treated us as if we were close friends in her own home... try the Cellar if you want an overall great experience both food and service! 10 stars!! read more

What a horrible place! Very unenjoyable experience. Very surprised this place is the highest rated in Elora town. We went in on a Saturday in September, at ten past noon (it opens at 11am), the hostess was still mopping the floor!!! Why would you not do that before you open the doors?? The table we sat on was quite dusty. There were lots of flys around. When we told her about the fly situation, she said they have a fly spray and they can't do anything about these flys. Okay, fine, so we order.... Mushrooms Crostini: tiny soggy crackers with lots of mushrooms and excessive spices on it. When the waiter brought it, we thought it was just a mushroom dish.. Steak Wrap: shamefully horrible!!! The oil was dripping from the wrap (see photo that I posted) and the bread was so soggy!!! I had to use multiple napkins just to try and hold it. The steak was also not cooked well, some pieces were so hard that I had to take them out.. I basically just had the sweet potato fries for lunch (they were not bad). Burger: it's just another boring burger. Nothing else was tempting. This place has a LOT OF OPPORTUNITY TO IMPROVE and I hope they work on their cleanliness situation as well as the quality of the food!!!! A small but delightful restaurant pub on the riverfront. Food is delightful, with a small children's menu too. The steak is cooked wonderfully and served with very nice roast potatoes and asparagus. I had the red pepper soup, which was delicious although not the best I've ever had. The pulled pork poutine is only poutine in the loose sense of the term. The fries are good, but there's essentially no gravy. Instead you get a very tangy and tasty pulled pork and BBQ sauce with crumbled goats cheese. A different take, and not quite what I was expecting but still very nice. I'd definitely come back next time I'm in the area. read more

Terrible experience at this place - a 2 bit waitress Jenna was extremely rude and has quite the attitude. 2 things I'm not really looking for when I go out for lunch. Came a long way to have lunch here from Durham Region - booked 2 days in advance and got reservation confirmation from the owner no less. Dear Jenna takes a couple of "walk in"women and seats them by the water when they arrived at the same time as us. There were other tables she could have seated them at. When confronted she couldn't give a rats ass - so reserving means not a thing folks. Food was ok and our server Liam did all he could to make it up to us but the experience was obviously a huge let down. Dropped by here for lunch during our day trip to Elora. Its riverside patio was the perfect place to enjoy the scenery and weather. It wasn't too busy for a Sunday afternoon, and we got seats outside right away. The waitress was very nice, but service was slow (waited at least 20 minutes for our food). I ordered the basil peppercorn wrap, which was sort of an elevated chicken caesar wrap with cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, and basil peppercorn sauce. My parents ordered a shrimp linguine and fish and chips. I would've loved the wrap if the tortilla was softer. Overall, the food was of good quality, and I would recommend The Cellar to anyone in Elora. read more

I stopped by The Cellar for dinner on a Saturday in Elora, as it was strongly suggested by my B&B host. The Cellar is a beautiful spot right on the Grand River. It has a fantastic patio, and as an added bonus the restaurant next door has (or at least had that night) live music which could be heard on our patio. I was excited to see that The Cellar stocks two of the Elora brews (I love drinking the local beer) - they also have a great menu including lots of pasta and salad options. We shared the spinach dip and a flat bread, followed by one of the garden salads (with chicken) and the chicken Parmesan. I thought the chicken parm was the standout of the meal, and noticed that a few other table guests were ogling it as it went by! Overall I think the food here is decent but a bit plain - I found everything to be a bit doughy (exception, the salad, which has nothing to be doughy about!) and the salad unfortunately was really light on the dressing - to the point that I wonder if it was forgotten. It was also a bit pricey, which is to be expected in a tourist town like Elora. Overall I think this place might be worth a second visit (or a first if you're in the Elora area) - the view itself is spectacular and it really is a romantic and cozy spot! Just don't have your hopes tooooo high about the food! read more

My friends and I had no intention to eat here, but out of a lack of options nearby we settled for the Cellar. It was a late lunch so I wasn't surprised at how empty it was. But it was a cozy little restaurant with a great patio. The server was extremely friendly and welcomed us in. Since I am vegetarian I chose the quinoa veggie burger and my friends decided to share a shrimp pasta and mushroom crostini. My burger comes with cheese, aioli, and a side of fries, however I asked if I could get the salad instead of fries, which did cost an additional $2. I also asked for no dairy. The server happily made those accommodations for me. The food arrived within 10-15 minutes. My friends raved about their meal. Mine was pretty good as well. My only complaint was that the burger patty was extremely crumbly and would just fall apart with every attempt of a bite. Furthermore the side salad was tiny, which I felt was not worth the additional charge. This restaurant is on the pricier side, but overall It was a hit and I would certainly come again when I visit Elora. read more

With a location close to the quaint shops found in Elora and a patio that overlooks the Grand River, it's a comfortable, friendly place to enjoy a late afternoon beer or an early lunch. I would not however recommend The Cellar for dinner. While relaxed and friendly, the service is noticeably strained and for the price, the dinner menu simply isn't up to par. We came here for a quiet lunch and a break from the city. The waitress was friendly and attentive. We had the soup to start - it was celeriac and pear and very tasty. We both had burgers for lunch, my partner had the lamb burger and I had the sirloin. Only reason this gets 4 stars is because my burger was a bit too salty and overdone. The lamb one was perfect. Nice beer and wine selection as well. Must be very nice in the summer since it's right on the water. read more

This restaurant gets 1 star for the nice patio. The food however, was truly disappointing. I'm fairly forgiving about food, but I'm still angry at having had to pay a good amount of money for a meal that was devoid of flavor and thought. We chose this place as it looked to be the best reviewed place in downtown Elora. Maybe the fact that the prices were high gives one the illusion they are eating good food.... The avocado quinoa with chicken salad I had was swimming in oil - the dressing was supposed to be a 'basil lemon Dijon vinaigrette'. It tasted as though they never mixed the dressing, or ran out of it and just decided to use leftover olive oil. No basil or lemon to be had. The chicken tasted like the salad toppers chicken packets you buy at a metro. We asked for the grilled calamari but not breaded - they said no problem they can do it without breading. We get two pieces of unsalted, boiled, slimy (and what I can only guess was from frozen) pieces of octopus. No grill marks, very undercooked. No attempt at flavoring...I feel that the cooks at this restaurant are doing this 'just for a job' and have no passion for cooking nor any know how when it comes to going a bit off the basic recipes. Which is all fine and dandy but don't charge so much for your food then. The highlight of the meal was when we returned our uneaten calamari and the server took it off our bill. We expected to have to pay for that, and I appreciate that we didn't. I'd like to end this review more positively, but I really can't think of anything nice to say that I haven't already. Stopped in for dinner on the patio overlooking the river with a party of four. Dinner was good, we tried the daily soup and various entrees which were fresh and flavourful. One of our party was gluten free which they handled expertly. We waited a little long for the bill, but that's the worst thing I can say about the experience, it isn't a big deal. The pub is nice looking and cosy. A bit put off by the pushy, beardy hipster that emerged from behind the bar (he must have been rude before it was mainstream). My friend and I were looking forward to a day in Elora as we had both visited it over 10 years ago. We wanted to sit outside and enjoyed the patio area at The Cellar Pub. After a very long wait, our meals were very disappointing. I had the caramelized onion and pear soup which was much too sweet and tasted like warmed peach nectar. I couldn't eat more than a few spoonfuls. The vegetable wrap was tasteless with a mixture of a few sautéed vegetables and much too much chopped raw celery which overpowered the other vegetables. The sauce was so thin that it pooled at the bottom of the wrap and dripped through my fingers. My friend enjoyed her veggie burger but found the watermelon feta salad to be almost devoid of feta and covered in an overly sweet sauce. The server kindly did not charge for it. With a glass of wine, a beer and a 15% tip, the bill came to $60.00. We will not be returning. read more

I read great yelp reviews, so we decided to try The Cellar for lunch. It was a 40 min wait for the patio, we were hungry but it decided it was worth it. We were finally given our table with a lovely view of the lake. There were some healthy choices on the menu which was nice. HOWEVER. It took us over an hour to get our food. I finally asked, and it was clear our waitress had forgotten to place our order. So it literally took us 1 hr and 20 mins to get 2 salads. I ordered the quinoa salad with chicken and as another reviewer noted it was tasteless so I asked for more dressing. However, this made little difference as the dressing had no taste. Our bill came and for 2 salads with chicken and salmon added (you have to pay more for these) plus 1/2 a liter of Ontario wine, the total was OVER $70 dollars! For lunch. I don't think I pay those prices in Toronto. They were very busy and apologize for the wait but at that price point, I would expect a lot more. read more
