So after a failed attempt to get in on V Day (Crazy wait time of over 3 hours and a deposit of 100 dollars to get onto the waiting list) my wife and I tried this place again on a non holiday and what a totally different experience. We got onto the Yelp Wait List and were 19th in line for what felt a long time as we drove to this spot. We decided to try our luck and walk in and were pleasantly surprised to see only two groups waiting to sit. The host took our info on a separate list and we got our table within 20 min. We were taken to the back and I totally get it. The ambience and sitting in one of the private caves for two definitely make the evening that much more intimate. We ordered dessert since I kept hearing this is where they excel at and I was not disappointed. The service was awesome and I was given the recommendation of The Valentina which was delicious. Not super sweet but balanced enough that it was totally satisfying. We came here with friends on a Saturday night and we had a great time. I called ahead and said that we'd be there within a certain time, and since there were 4 of us they went ahead and put our name on the waiting list for a table. I'm so relieved we did this, because if we hadn't there was a 30 minute wait. This wouldn't have killed us, but if they have this type of service than why not use it. The interior decorations were great, and the bathrooms were clean, all pluses. The service was AMAZING and everyone was so kind. We got two apps (nachos & breadsticks) which were great, and we loved all the food we got. (Lasagna mushroom pizza, santo jardin wrap, 5 cheese quesadilla, and the lahmajun). We all went home with leftovers, too! If we're visiting our friends in Jersey, we would probably stop here again because we definitely enjoyed it! read more

But it's the new age atmosphere that makes this place stand out as I shall describe: Here's the breakdown Food: 4 Stars: I have never ordered regular food so this is simply about the ice Cream. The portion sizes are huge. They offer sundaes and other ice cream meals (Best way to describe it) which are best shared with someone. They are named after various mythological gods and goddesses in keeping with the whole new age/mythological motif. The Ice cream itself is good and is covered lasciviously with toppings. Not sure if the ice cream is homemade but it tastes like it is. Service: 3 stars: The staff is nice and will bring your food/ice cream in a timely manner. They are usually high school/college kids who seem to be into the whole new age thing themselves. However, there can be a long wait for a table sometimes and occasionally they are a little disorganized when it comes to seating. Atmosphere: 5 Stars: This place has the coolest atmosphere of any place in NJ. While the front of the restaurant is unglamorous and average, in the back of the restaurant they have booths in which you literally feel like you are in a cave surrounded by Greek statues. Walking into Archetypus makes you forget you are in New Jersey! The night garden theme is executed really well. No matter what you do try to get a cave!! The cave creates quite the experience either for a group dinner or a romantic night. The hanging ivy was a nice touch. The atmosphere is definitely the main draw, but the food is quite good too. The food seemed reasonably priced with a selection of pizzas, sandwiches, wraps, appetizers, and desserts. I ordered the Santo Jardin, which was really tasty. I believe inside the wrap there was veggie burger, more vegetables, and a chipotle sauce. The chipolte sauce gave the wrap a nice spicy kick. My only problem was that inside the cave it was so dark I really couldn't see what was in my wrap. It felt strange to not see exactly what I was eating. Went here saturday for a girls lunch/dinner. Atmosphere is a vibe and the dim lights help create a really chill and laid back environment. I ordered the strawberry lemonade which was very good! and the cilantro chicken quesadilla. The quesadilla was good but I just wish that the chicken was actually marinated in a house made cilantro sauce instead of dry cilantro being smothered inside of the whole quesadilla. The dips were delicious and as an appetizer we ordered the truffle chips. Really nothing that blew my mind being they were similar to ruffles brand of plain potatoe chips. For dessert I ordered the white chocolate sundae that came with moist cake topped with a delectable buttercream frosting. I really enjoyed my dessert. The prices are fair being that the food isnt too upscale and you're mainly paying for the experience. The waiting service could be better and servers could be alot more attentive to tables. This place seems to be a lot of gimmick, little substance. The environment/atmoshpere is unique (it's a cave!) but the food is really not that great. I never send things back at resturaunts (never) but it this place I sent back two (TWO!) items--including a dessert. The chicken gyro was mediocre at best. It had a crispy pita and the tzatziki sauce was creamy and might not have been tzatziki sauce at all. The chicken itself was okay--not vey gyro-y but edible. The bacon and mushroom quesedilla was actually pretty good. Surprisingly, and unnecessarily, sweet but the best thing we ordered. We ordered two desserts and were underwhelmed. The good thing: each dessert is huge and enough for two or three people. The bad thing: the desserts look and sound better than they taste. The buttercream frosting had a faint tast of Playdoh. The compositions of each dessert seemed somewhat odd on paper (carrot cake, wet walnuts, graham crackers, banana ice cream, toasted coconut, and pineapple) but you'd figure someone had put greath thought into putting such a strange combination together so you order it only to be dissappointed. Despite my bad experience, there is something about this place that prompts me to give it another chance. I think it's the huge dessert menu. I admit $10.95 - $12.95 is a bit steep for an ice cream sundae. After entering the restaurant, I quickly realized that the interior was an extension of the intriguing facade. Towards the back of the restaurant are several intimate candlelit seating arrangements called "the caves", some of which are draped in long indoor plants. I felt as if I were eating inside an ancient ruin. Definitely a great place to bring a date. I was so pleased with this find that I brought a couple friends there the following night. We shared the Peanut Butter Cocoa Circus Pie (chocolate mousse, vanilla ice cream, peanut butter sauce, caramel & chocolate shavings) and Tiramisu Delight (tiramisu, coffee ice cream, dark roasted coffee beans, kahlua, & extra lady fingers). Had to update my previous review after going back there this week. Needless to say most come to Archetypus for the ambiance not necessarily the food. Even though it is tasty (but way over priced for desserts and wraps) The ambiance is ruined by the servers lack of communication and grace. After waiting over 25 mins to sit in the back you are astonished at the lack of empathy from the servers. I hadn't been here in awhile and when I asked the waiter about items I no longer saw on the menu his response was "Whatever we have on the menu is what we serve".. what a horrible response. We place an order for an appetizer thinking this would allow a few mins to look over the revised menu, and right away another server comes to ask for our order. We tell server #2 that we are still looking and not even 2 mins later another server asks for our order. I told him we had already placed our order and he just walked away. We are sitting there enjoying our bottle of wine and our app. comes and we are not even 2 mins into the app and we are presented with our food. Again, two-three waiters are circling us to the point we felt we couldn't even have a conversation. Our app is taken away and we are working on our food and a server asks us if we plan on ordering dessert. We ask to see the menu.. while still eating. A few mins later, still eating, still TRYING to enjoy the bottle of wine we brought a server asks us if we want desserts. By this time it's borderline rude. The kicker is ... we are still eating and another server we haven't seen the whole night comes up to us and hands us the bill. With a full bottle of wine and a half eaten wrap. I ask if I can get the wrap boxed because at this point I don't even want to stay. He sees my frustration and says that there's a time limit on sitting in the back and we are about to reach it. I was so insulted. I looked at the time and we had roughly been there an hour. Not only did we have to wait to sit back there, we were hassled by about 3-4 different servers every 5-10 mins and now they are basically kicking us out? TO add insult to injury there were open tables around us. I used to be a server and understand the concept of flipping tables, but this was so ridiculous. I have been coming here since I was a kid!!! It is the MOST UNIQUE PLACE you will EVER go to! It looks like a cave, both inside and out, and only within the last few years did they introduce a food menu. It used to be just coffee and the best ice cream sundaes ever. Food is moderately priced and from what I've had, it's usually all pretty good. But you can NEVER EVER EVER go wrong with one of their sundaes. GENTLEMEN: Looking to impress a date? GO HERE. Hint: Movies right across the street as well! It's very chill, with music usually consisting of no lyrics and dim light settings.
