This candy store was so much fun. I found pickle candy. For real! Of course I bought it. They had saltwater taffy, Grandpa's favorite. And all kinds of flavor options. And I got a few in his memory. We found some mints for hubs mint tin collection, and we enjoyed those as we drove along. This is a great place to get out and walk around. I had a truly great experience at the Candy Man today. Although there is a large selection of commercial candy, I chose specific in-house treats. Those included a pecan turtle, dark chocolate seafoam and milk chocolate mint meltaways. The pecan turtle was SO fresh with TONS of whole crunchy pecans, flavorful caramel and delicious chocolate. The perfect bite. My other choices did not fall short of excellent. My first trip to Long Beach was more than terrific and I have a new 'go-to' spot for candy! The counter staff person was more than friendly even though it was packed inside. She even double checked my selections before ringing up the sale. After YEARS of getting my saltwater taffy and chocolates from another shop down on the corner (and have always been irritated with the service) I decided to look for a new saltwater taffy spot! My husband recalled seeing The Candy Man shop, so I popped in there. Boy was I glad I did! Not only did they have a larger selection of taffy, they had way more chocolates to choose from PLUS all your favorite candies you forgot you loved. We went there a few nights ago. My wife bought some of the "handmade" candies and I bought taffy. Everything was stale! I bought two pieces of about 18 different varieties of taffy, all stale! This is no coincidence and it is inexcusable. There is no way that they don't know that ALL of their taffy is stale. I realize that these coastal candy shops expect very little return business. Fun little shop, tons of interesting, whimsical, to down right silly or crazy treats, including meal worms and crickets. 100 flavors of salt water taffy, several types of dipped Twinkies, cookies, fudge, chocolates, etc Something for everyone. So why only 3 stars? It's really for the actual salt water taffy. We LOVE salt water taffy.... in hundreds of flavors, and we eat it from every candy store we go to... but this taffy was below par. The consistency and flavor were completely lacking. It was like sugar with a small amount of flavor. It was hard to differentiate the flavors we had chosen in the bag. The texture was off, gooey almost, as if it was dissolving, very hard to get out of the wrapper. The other novelty treats we bought were fine, and I guess the taffy wasn't all bad.... it did manage to pull my daughter's tooth out that was just a little loose! I'm not a big fan of sugar candy or saltwater taffy, but I do like browsing around in olde-tyme candy shops. The Candy Man is just that -- a small, cozy shop crammed full of old-fashioned and hard-to-find candies, plus fudge, taffy, chocolate, and novelty candies. In addition to the dozens of bins of taffy, they had nostalgic favorites like candy and bubble gum cigarettes, Mallo Cups, Idaho Spuds, and more. The glass cases in back had chocolate truffles, chocolate-nut "paws" (similar to turtles, I think), and weird stuff like chocolate-covered jalapeno peppers and bacon. They sell fudge by the pound and carry some of those gigantic novelty gummies in various shapes (including bodily organs!). If that's too weird, they also sell Jelly Belly and M&Ms by the pound up front. The store is not huge and the aisles are pretty tight, so be ready to squeeze past your fellow shoppers in order to see everything. The employees were friendly and helpful, and offered samples of the fudge. The prices seemed comparable to other specialty candy stores, i.e., somewhat spendy but where else are you going to find these items. I didn't see anything that I felt compelled to try, but the many kids in there were enthralled by all the strange new varieties of sugary sweets. A good place to look if you're trying to track down a specific olde-tyme brand, or bribing kids for good behavior. read more

Every time I visit a town while in Washington I like to stop into the local candy shop. I've become quite addicted to seafoam which I can't find in Los Angeles. I popped into The Candy Man while strolling down Pacific Ave. Right away I noticed the unique variety of chocolate covered items such as bacon, Twinkies and jalapeños. They also have all the usual sweet treats and even a tempting selection of fudge. I got the dark chocolate covered seafoam and have to say it was the best I've ever had! The chocolate was rich and creamy and the seafoam had the right crisp and crunch. The service was excellent and they even gave me a free sample before buying. I highly recommend this candy shop. So there are two things you always want to try when visiting the coast: salt water taffy or clam chowder. This is quite a popular, cute, little candy shop. I admit that some of these candies seem a little overpriced. We came here on the fourth of july and the shop was packed. It was hard to even walk through the aisles. There is a ton of flavors of taffy here! We grabbed a lot of random flavors that sounded good and headed out. While we walked around and headed to the beach, I pulled a piece of taffy out to try it. I was shocked at how gooey the taffy was just minutes after leaving the shop. After going home and putting it in the fridge for a while, I definitely recommend the lemon flavor. We came here for the taffy and ended up buying much more. The taffy is sold by the pound, it is on the squishy side which I was very pleased about because I hate when it Is so hard you can't chew it. I am a taffy aficionado, so when I found out that this store had 100 flavors of taffy, I was psyched to check it out. I bought four lbs of taffy, trying most of the flavors. I'm saddened to report that their taffy has the wrong consistency. It's gooey, without substance or chewiness. And the flavors are, well, vague. The blackberry doesn't taste like blackberry. It just tastes kind of sweet. The store is packed full of stuff. we went to the shop today while walking downtown . we bought a lot of salt water taff in various flavors. when we got back to the room I have one and it was gooey on the outside and hard in the middle with a very old taste. after I spit it out it tried a different flavor and two more all to be the same and I spit them out too. I was not happy about buying something so bad so I called the store and let the clerk know and she told me it is a very common here because of the humidity. just put them in the fridge. I tried that and although it was less gooey it still tastes old. don't buy the salt water taffy here. it's awful. I wasted my money. read more

As a former candy maker/ store employee on the Oregon Coast from some years ago I tend to be a hard customer to candy stores only because I KNOW quality chocolates. The chocolates here were good. I got sea foam ( a little dense for my liking, GOOD seafoam should be airier, but still quite enjoyable) , peppermint patties (very good) some raspberry & orange sticks & a couple of "paws". Unfortunately MY $43.00 was NOT ENOUGH to qualify me for even one little white chocolate box used by ANY/ALL OTHER candy shops . ALL $43.00 WORTH OF CHOCOLATES to be enjoyed by 4 of us family members over a few days was LITERALLY & PHYSICALLY "DUMPED" into one little bag. I was then asked if I "wanted" a second bigger plastic shopping bag to go around it. Really?? Sure..thanks if it's not too much. You know, SOMETHING to keep it from falling or busting out/thru would be appreciated. We had to seperate it & rebag it in our vehicle just so we weren't all touching it while trying to get to other pieces. How cheap, cheesy & just plain lacking in any good customer service. They definately have the attitude of "we got their money already and who cares if they ever return. there are tons of new tourist every year. People want candy when the go to beach & they'll buy it anyways. "Maybe some people but not me and definately not there. I highly highly recommend Scooper's instead.
