The store is charming and has a lot of different candy to try. The pics on the wall show that this is an old school operation dating back a while and that just adds to the pleasure of the shopping. The gentleman behind the counter was very friendly, and since I already had my mind set on the taffy, it was a short but sweet (excuse the pun), visit. The taffy itself was very tasty (I chose assorted colors and flavors), and the cute presentation of these little bundles of chewy candy, was the perfect gift. We only bought 2 bags one as a gift and one to sample and share, and the only regret is that we should have gotten more! They prepare sushi and other Asian delights on site, and have a large selection of wines and beers. Hampton Natural Foods is a lot like Trader Joe's, but a little bit more higher end, and pricier. The wine section is very impressive, as is the cheese section. The place is always packed when I go there, so the lines can be a bit daunting. You can find a lot of unique brands that you won't see elsewhere, but be prepared to pay premium for them. Staff is friendly, and always ready to answer questions. I think the check-out people know that their lines tend to go slowly, and they're always gracious about thanking customers for coming (even if they have a small purchase). I've had no complaints about Hampton Natural Foods. Then again, I visit every few months. I think if this were my main place to shop and get all of my essentials that I'd be broke in no time. Buy in moderation and enjoy a great store like this- wish there were more of them!

First, I was surprised to find that they no longer serve their lobster rolls on the grilled hot-dog-style roll they used to use. The lobster roll is offered either cold with mayonnaise or hot with butter. I don't like mayonnaise, but I also didn't want my lobster heated. I asked if I could have the cold lobster with butter instead, and the woman at the counter said that would be fine. When I received my receipt, I noticed I had been charged an additional $1 on a nearly $30 lobster roll simply to have hot butter put on the cold lobster. I was honestly flabbergasted. All I wanted was cold lobster with melted butter poured over it. What bothered me almost as much was the way the situation was handled. The customer behind me ordered a lobster roll, and the woman at the counter specifically asked if she was okay with having it on a sub roll. She had never mentioned that to me. After overhearing that conversation, I went back and asked why I hadn't been told that the lobster rolls were no longer served on the traditional roll. The response was quite abrupt, and the manager was called over. Unfortunately, the manager was also angry and rude about the situation. I simply explained that, to me, a traditional New England lobster roll includes the grilled, buttered roll -- and that is exactly what I had ordered at Al's earlier this summer and loved. In the end, I was refunded the $1 butter charge and also received a refund for the entire lobster roll, which was around $34. I'm very disappointed because I have always loved Al's and have recommended them in the past. But after this experience, I won't be going back to Al's for a lobster roll. It's not just the change in the lobster roll itself; it was the lack of communication regarding the change and, most importantly, the way I was treated when I politely asked about it.
