I really hate to say this because I have always loved Al's, but after my experience this week, I feel people should know what to expect if they're considering ordering a lobster roll there. First, I was surprised to find that they no longer serve their lobster rolls on the grilled hot-dog-style roll they used to use. The lobster roll is offered either cold with mayonnaise or hot with butter. I don't like mayonnaise, but I also didn't want my lobster heated. I asked if I could have the cold lobster with butter instead, and the woman at the counter said that would be fine. When I received my receipt, I noticed I had been charged an additional $1 on a nearly $30 lobster roll simply to have hot butter put on the cold lobster. I was honestly flabbergasted. All I wanted was cold lobster with melted butter poured over it. What bothered me almost as much was the way the situation was handled. The customer behind me ordered a lobster roll, and the woman at the counter specifically asked if she was okay with having it on a sub roll. She had never mentioned that to me. After overhearing that conversation, I went back and asked why I hadn't been told that the lobster rolls were no longer served on the traditional roll. The response was quite abrupt, and the manager was called over. Unfortunately, the manager was also angry and rude about the situation. I simply explained that, to me, a traditional New England lobster roll includes the grilled, buttered roll -- and that is exactly what I had ordered at Al's earlier this summer and loved. In the end, I was refunded the $1 butter charge and also received a refund for the entire lobster roll, which was around $34. I'm very disappointed because I have always loved Al's and have recommended them in the past. But after this experience, I won't be going back to Al's for a lobster roll. It's not just the change in the lobster roll itself; it was the lack of communication regarding the change and, most importantly, the way I was treated when I politely asked about it. read more

I've been here twice now both times with my Mom. She chose this place a while ago for lunch. I got the chicken tenders dinner. It was OK but I wasn't a big fan of the brand of dipping sauce that they carry. Onion rings are delicious & I believe that they are homemade. It's an easy process as you go up to the counter to place your food & drink order. Visible menu on display with prices. You pay, get a number and can go inside & seat yourself. They will call out your number & bring your food to your table. On my first visit here staff was attentive and someone had come by to check on how we were doing & asked us if we needed anything. Not on this trip and it was busier on my 1st visit this year. My mom was craving whole belly clams & wanted to come here. We came around 4pm on a Tuesday. I decided I was going to get a lobster roll as I haven't had one on my visit while here in NH and I was ok with paying the crazy price of $29.99 and boy was I disappointed!! The texture of the lobster was odd.....it was soft, smooth & slippery. I've never had a lobster roll where the meat tasted like this before. Maybe it was super fresh? IDK but the lobster was lacking in the taste department. I got it with mayo. There was absolutely no spices/seasonings in it, no celery for that crunch, nothing. It was the worst lobster roll that I've ever had even the mayo didn't have any taste & I had asked for extra mayo. Oh & the bun, what was that?? One side looked like a hot dog roll & the other side looked like the butt end of a loaf of bread. It was barely even toasted on one side if that. Thank God for the onion rings as they were delicious & I knew that as I had them on my first visit. I told my mom how disappointed I was in their lobster roll and only ate 1/2 of it but due to the cost of it I had asked for a container to take the uneaten 1/2 home. I planned on adding some flavor to it with spices & some more mayo. Well the next day I decided I wasn't interested in it and offered it to my mom who gladly accepted. I asked her if she wanted me to put some seasoning in it & she said "no" well she agreed with me that it had NO flavor to it & was just as disappointed as I was. So unfortunately I don't recommend the lobster roll with mayo unless you like it to lack flavor. This last visit no one came to check on us & I saw 4 different girls in the eating area that worked there. My reasons for the 3 stars: 1. Prices 2. No flavor in the lobster roll, no hot dog bun, nor a toasted bun 3. Gross dipping sauce for your chicken tenders 4. Service in the inside seating area is a hit or miss I don't see myself coming back here unless I'm giving my mom a ride for her to get something to eat. She did enjoy her whole belly clams but even those were expensive. I know seafood can be pricey but I feel like their prices are not competitive with other places that serve seafood. This definitely isn't a fancy place so don't expect it to be. Food is served on paper, you get a little package with plastic silverware & a napkin. Staff aren't waiting on you. Very, very surprised. I'm pretty particular when it comes to lobster because it's so easy to overcook, so I'm usually skeptical about ordering a lobster roll. My boyfriend and I shared the Connecticut-style lobster roll. While it wasn't overflowing with lobster especially for $29.99 it was cooked perfectly. That's not something I say often, so that's a huge compliment. I've had lobster rolls in Maine for about the same price that were much more generously filled, but the quality of the lobster here was excellent. My biggest critique would be the bun. I think this would be even better on a non-toasted bun or with a different style of roll altogether. The bun took away from what was otherwise a fantastic lobster roll. I also ordered the clam chowder. The flavor was really good, and it tasted homemade and fresh. My only complaint is that I hardly found any clams or if they were there, they were very small and blended into the soup. It also had a slight cheesy flavor that I wasn't expecting. I'd just recommend adding more clams because the base itself was delicious. The French fries were decent, and you could tell they were cooked in clean oil, which I always appreciate. The coleslaw, however, was watery and just wasn't for me. As for the atmosphere, it has a fun, old-school seafood shack vibe. You order outside, grab your food, then bring it inside to eat, and the staff clears your table afterward, which was a nice touch. The only downside was that the air conditioning appeared to be leaking in the middle of the dining room. Water dripped onto my boyfriend and even onto one of the waitresses. I'm sure it was just a maintenance issue, but it wasn't the most pleasant dining experience and did make me question how sanitary it was. Overall, I left pleasantly surprised. Despite a few areas that could be improved, the perfectly cooked Connecticut-style lobster roll is absolutely something I'd order again, and that's saying a lot coming from someone who's very picky about lobster. read more

Wow, what a great place to go! I had never been here before, so I didn't realize that you ordered at the window before you were able to get a seat inside. We arrived early, so it was no problem to order, get inside, and sit at a table. Within about 15 minutes of us sitting down, our food arrived. The roll was filled but I've had much more generous portions elsewhere for $25.99. Note the lobster roll comes with fries. We also ordered side orders of fried clam strips ($15.99), fried onion rings, and a kids meal of chicken tenders with fries. The clam strips were juicy and so fresh! I would give this dish five stars and would reorder any time. The inside of this restaurant is great. The set up is large, clean and easy to move around in. I hadn't been here in a decade because I used to get the swordfish and sometimes, it was a bit off. In addition the fried seafood was a bit greasy. In a pinch, I went here tonight and ordered the seafood platter which came with clams, scallops and shrimp and haddock. The shrimp were baby shrimp, the clams were about six and the scallops were bay scallops and the haddock were not fillets but overcooked dark brown pieces. The cole slaw was not put through a mandolin, not shredded but chopped. Overall the dish was tasteless, everything tasted the same, tasteless. And not a great amount of food for $28.99, $31.45 w tax. My favorite place is Lena's seafood in Salisbury. A seafood platter there is a bit more $38.95, $40.90 w tax. However for the extra $9.45 you get about a dozen huge Sea Scallops, 3 thick haddock fillets about 3X5", 4 Jumbo shrimps, a dozen clams a bunch of fries and 4 onion rings. And the seafood is cooked to a golden brown and you can taste the seafood, each individual seafood taste like it should, not tasteless. However it's closed for the season. If there were a Hall of Fame for small fried seafood joints that never miss, Al's Seafood would already have a plaque, a laminated menu, and a line out the door - they already have a chalk menu, and during the summer, a wait for a table so we're almost there! This place is absurdly consistent. The portions are always generous, the quality is never caught lacking, and the dining room is spotless in that reassuring someone actually cares way. The staff (and it's always the same people that are there, which is cool in itself that there's no noticeable turnover in the staff) is friendly without being fake about it... efficient, pleasant, and clearly proud of what they're serving from fryers behind the soda fountains. Let's talk food, because wow. That's why you're reading this. The fried shrimp are so good that my wife (who does not like seafood) actively loves them. That alone should be printed on the menu. I've only known her to eat fried shrimp when the breading weighs more than the shrimp itself (which is not the case here). The tartar sauce is the best in North America. It's my crack. If I drank it through a straw (a bit too thick), that straw would be called a crack pipe. I literally smile writing about this tartar sauce. I will not be taking questions at this time. The "regular" fries are exactly what fries should be: crisp, fluffy, salty perfection. And the onion rings? Peak "fried seafood place" onion rings... golden, crunchy, and unapologetically doing their job, not tempura style, but old school Weathervane "fried seafood style" onion rings that you can sub in instead of fries on plates/boats for a small upcharge. Even the bathrooms are clean, which sounds like a throwaway detail until you realize how rare that is and how much it says about the place. We love it so much that we'll happily drive 40 minutes each way to eat there - in winter - because that's what you do when a place never lets you down. And despite the sign saying Al's Seafood, we tell everyone it's called "Big Al's Seafood" Not because that's the name, but because that's the energy this place has... It's not trendy. I spent most of my week in New Hampshire sitting still thanks to a wicked case of vertigo, so when it finally came time to hit up a seafood spot near the water I was ready to go. I stopped by Al's Seafood with my parents at around noon on a Friday and this place was packed. Unlike most restaurants, here you place your order at the front window located outside, then you head inside and grab a table, then the food is brought to you wherever you sit and it's time to eat. The restaurant itself is straight out of a photo book called "New England" and I loved it. It's a big open room that looks exactly how a seafood place near the Atlantic Ocean should look and the staff is super friendly on top of it, checking 2/3 boxes for atmosphere and staff, so how was the food? I ended up ordering the lazy man lobster which came with two rolls and french fries, and my parents ordered a large onion ring for the table to split. I only ate a few of the onion rings as the breading was really not up my ally, just not the flavour I shoot for with onion rings, while the french fries were a classic steak style with solid flavour that tasted pretty good. The lobster itself was perfect, trimmed of the stuff I can't eat and just a pile of lobster meat ready to get devoured. There was a decent amount of lobster meat here and it all tasted very good. Overall, Al's Seafood is a North Hampton staple and a place I would absolutely visit again in the future. The staff here was friendly, the restaurant was well decorated and looked great, and the food was fantastic as well. If you are looking for the seafood treatment in New Hampshire, this place is going to do the trick. read more

I can't understand how this restaurant has so many good reviews! After reading them we decided to eat here while on vacation. Who would have thought you could get such terrible seafood in a coastal town. As you can see from the pictures, the fried shrimp are the size of salad shrimp and the clams were cooked into rubber bands. So terrible! Al's seafood on Rt 1 in North Hampton, NH has been on my list for a while, and did not disappoint. Hot crispy fish and chips served in just a few minutes. At Al's you order at the window and then go inside to select your seat. I took takeout, so I can't review the restaurant, but if the inside is as nice as the service outside GO! The counterperson had no problem explaining the menu, and answered promptly when asked what the fish and chips was...haddock, and even added that they served it two different ways, as a fillet or as fish bits. I chose the fillet and the basket size. Reasonably priced and a perfect lunch portion. I'll be back and must try the clams. Everyone says they are sweet and plump. read more

Ok. To start, I have been coming to Al's since 2010. Approximately. I love their fried seafood- scallops, lobster, fish and chips, but also love their grilled halibut. I got that today, along with the twice baked potato, which was excellent. We also got a lobster roll because everyone had been posting about them lately. Honestly, we hated it. It had an aftertaste, lots of shells, and was on a cold bun, not toasted. Very disappointing. Sorry guys. I also got lobster stew recently and it also had a lot of shells in it, and I threw it away. Al's should always be on your list when visiting Hampton Beach. The fish chowder is full of white fish and has a cream thin creamy base to it. But it's the native baby shrimp that keeps us coming back, they are delicious. And unlike many of the area seafood places, you can still feed a family of four for about a hundred bucks. It was my first visit to Als and I can't say I won't ever try it again someday but if I do I will certainly not be getting the lobster roll! I'm rather biased when it comes to lobster as I grew up on the coast of Cape Cod diving and catching lobsters all summer so I know all too well what fresh lobster is like. It has a certain texture and taste to it when it's fresh. What I just had at Als was absolutely 100% previously frozen claw and knuckle meat. It was mushy, watery, and tasteless. It was also not that big for what it cost. It was definitely not what I was expecting from a place like this. Come on Als! You can do better!
