Service was very good. Our server was gracious and welcoming. Our party ordered fish and chips, fried fish rolls and jumbo fried shrimp. Everything came out hot and cooked perfectly. The haddock was fresh, mild and light and the shrimp was tender. Nothing was swimming in grease and that was appreciated by everyone. The coleslaw was standard and the fries were lacking. They weren't crisp nor appetizing. No seasoning to speak of. Just bland, wilty freezer fries. With the understanding this establishment is casual in nature, they need to upgrade the paper cups. They are flimsy and that's just annoying. The decor is seriously in need of a refresh. It looks old and unkept. I'd say give it a try if you are in the area. We're back on vacation and of course had to come to Ray's again. We've been here before and it's always solid. Didn't have to wait long, which was a nice surprise. I got the fried oysters (the small order, around $22) and they were awesome super crispy and fresh. Also tried the lobster baked haddock and wow, the portion was huge. Definitely get your appetite ready. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We sat in the dining room. There was a family with really loud kids nearby for part of it, which was kind of annoying, but once they left it was much more enjoyable.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Overall, love the food and the service. Didn't even get to eat with our party of 6. While talking to the greeter about getting a table at the entrance one of the waitresses gave us a VERY NASTY attitude about where we were standing as we were trying to move out of her away to let her get by. I ordered the seafood chowder, onion rings, and small fried clams. The seafood chowder was disappointing, there was no seasoning and it was very watery. I do prefer a thicker chowder. The onion rings were okay, they could have been crunchier but they were tasty. The oysters tasted fresh but I also wish they were fried a bit longer and for some type of seasoning. I also had the painkiller, which was also okay. The service was pretty quick for it being busy. My server was pleasant. Wanted to try this one a less busy day of the week. Got there just after the lunch run and before the dinner rush. Had to wait a few minutes for a table, but the wait wasn't long. Decided to take a drive here yesterday after a long stressful week. Reviews looked good and I've always been curious about this restaurant all the years I've been going up to the beach. Unfortunately, from the start, it was very disappointing. It was a little confusing where you ordered where you sat staff just expected you knew how the place ran. After being told we could go upstairs to be waited on by staff and seated, we proceeded to do so my girlfriend and I. After walking up the stairs, we found ourselves standing in a bar area with only one person sitting at the bar and a female bartender. Took her a few minutes to even pay attention to us that we were standing there and when we proceeded to ask her what we did who sat us how we ordered she was very rude , like surprised that we didn't know the way things were ran that was a total turn off. This was yesterday afternoon approximately 3:30 4 o'clock Ish. Needless to say we were both going to get fried seafood because that's what I heard you folks specialize in, disappointing that we didn't because we went with broiled scallops that were tasteless and the driest baked potato I have ever eaten there wasn't enough butter or sour cream to take the dryness away . My friend went with the special scallops and haddock baked. There was so much stuffing on it that was also very dry and tasteless. You could barely find the haddock and scallops. Also, the food had little to no flavor at all. Very, very disappointing from the beginning to end. Needless to say, I wouldn't recommend and I would never return to this establishment. Food and staff left a really bad taste, in our mouths to say the least. I'm very new to doing reviews . Typically, I let things slide. You can always get a bad meal but this is happening in too many establishments these days. As a local and first time visitor I was very disappointed considering I brought some out of town friends. Service was nonexistent- we saw our server all of 3 times- take our order, drop off our order and when we hunted for her cause we ran out of water during our meal and still parched. We ordered 3 meals, and for some reason it felt like it took forever for our food to arrive on a Monday evening. Yes the inside was full, but fried seafood does not take that long. Anyway, my 2 way platter whole clams and scallops with $4 up charge for onion rings were so disappointing. My clams tasted off, I didn't get sick persay but I had a bit of indigestion after. The scallops were fine, portion small for the price. And the $4 up charge for onion rings were not worth it- Very few onion rings! I found the tartar bland as well. My companions lobster pie just looked terrible. The crust while baked looks saturated/greasy. Their shrimp basket seemed fine- They also need to focus on cleaning as we sat by the window inside and saw some dead flies on the window sill- not appetizing . Disappointed- haven't been to Rays in several years - wanted an ocean view for visitors. Food was good- no complaints except for prices.! I ordered onion rings and was surprised when the bill came- $9.99 for a side of rings! -think that's the highest price I've ever paid for rings. Service was soso- mistake on the bill, no amenities- had to ask for tarter, napkins, etc. asked question about their "fluffy chowder" which was made famous by another Rye restaurant. The answer I received was obviously not the truth, also asked about hard shell or soft shell listers to go. Every year, on our week-long vacation, we have supper every night at Rays. Have never had a bad meal. Staff are great, remember us, and make the experience even better. Tonight we had extra entertainment when a super crass Karen began to complain about the fact her server had a slight accent (we had her last night and found her interesting and fun). They generated a big family fight about it, walked out, without paying, lit up their cigarettes, got into a $100K Escalade, drove the wrong way out of the parking lot, and pulled in front of traffic. the balcony was booing them as they left.
