There were eight of us at the party today, with people scattered throughout the main dining room, the bar, and the back dining room. Sadly, there was only one wait staff for everybody, so she ran to keep up. Everybody enjoyed what they ordered. It was freshly prepared and had great flavoring. Prices are fair, and no surcharge was added for the party of eight. The atmosphere was relaxed and enjoyable. It was quiet, and because of the ambient noise, we were able to have conversations without yelling at one another.

They also have an area set aside for parties and events. Service was excellent. Our waitress was courteous, the food came out quick. My mother got some shrimp scampi, baked apples and mashed potatoes she absolutely loved to the point she immediately told me she wanted to return to this restaurant in the future. My brother ordered a farmhand burger, and I got a rack of the baby back ribs. These meals were delicious, hearty, and quite satisfying. One thing we all regret is that we did not take a fresh baked pie home, next time we will. I loved how on the way out you can grab a lollipop, the kid in me loved the idea. Great place! Bacon egg and cheese omelette or a sausage egg and cheese sandwich on toast. Five dollars. The kind of place with a few locals sitting at a booth having their morning coffee, one of the waitresses offering Jim the last donut because they know he will want it. He accepts it. This is, in my mind, a classic American small town diner. The kind of place I grew up, eating in my hometown of 500 people. It's not high cuisine, there's nothing fancy about the food although I did come across a few things I had never seen before on the menu. Fried mush. Meat grits specials, like the scuttle butt and the chili Bob. An age old, but perfected recipe of eggs, meat, cheese, and a starch either potatoes ( homefries) or toast. The coffee is weak and not much flavor to it but, to be honest, it's exactly what you would expect in a place like this and there's something comforting about that. Honest, simple food made day and a day out, catering to the local crowd and a few roadway, travelers like myself who happen to come across it. There's a certain charm and depth to places like this that have been lived in day and day out by the same people for decades. For those like up rounded, there's the nostalgia and connection to the many other people having the same experience day after day in communities across the United States. Forgive me if I wax nostalgia can get a little sentimental here, but this morning's dining experience definitely elicited that for me. We really liked this place in downtown Sidney. It was different. On our way down I -75 traveling to…read moreDayton, we were looking for a place that was relatively quick, easily accessible and not too expensive. That usually means choosing a fast food chain location. These chains serve their purpose but aren't much fun. This place popped up on Yelp and turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. The location is a short drive off the highway into downtown Sidney, taking about 4 or 5 minutes to get there from Exit 92. It was located in a retro building on the main intersection in town cross corner from the County Courthouse. Approaching from the West on Court St., it looked a little divey. It looks more pleasantly vintage from the Ohio St. side, which is actually its storefront. Our visit to this place prompted me to do some quick research. The Spot has been in business for over 100 years, opening in 1907. A fire destroyed the original building in 1940 and according to the local paper, "the current Art Moderne-style building was completed in 1941 and still features its original white porcelain tile, mid-century neon sign and iconic diner layout." It truly has a retro feel inside, going more or less for a 1950s aura where you would not be surprised to see Richie Cunningham sitting at a booth drinking a malt. Although the jukebox is digital, the upgrades enacted by the new owners who took over last year generally seem to be spot on. While it looks retro, the infrastructure is in nice shape with a clean, tidy appearance. It's a pleasant place for a meal. The format is walk-up-and-order. The girl working the counter was polite and efficient. To be fair in context, however, we walked in around 6:45 PM on a Wednesday night an hour-and-a-quarter before closing. It was not at all busy when we entered with one party there finishing their meal and only two others who walked in before we left. Hence, efficiency would be expected with no other customers to be served, but I'll still note the good work. The food was up quickly without any issues. We sat in 1950s comfort to enjoy our meal. I had the Turkey Club. It was quite good. I ordered mine with Onion Rings as my wife wanted to split these with me. She had the Swiss Lad sandwich, which she said was also very tasty. We split an Iced Tea which was likewise quite good. With everything, we spent $25.48 for dinner. At less than $13 per person, I was happy with that value. We'll certainly look for this place again when we are passing through Sidney.

To my surprise, I was greeted at the register by a very friendly, Isabell, who also shared it was her first day working there when I told her it was my first time dining. Her kindness made me feel welcome. It was really neat to see the various pictures and articles on the wall highlighting President G.W. Bush visit 28-Aug-04 and another picture highlighting this establishment was previously owned by Rob Lowe's (Brat Pack actor from the 1980's) grandfather. The menu included several diner classics so I selected the "Big Buy" which was a double decker hamburger which was cooked to my liking. The wait was very reasonable and I enjoyed seeing families enjoying their dining experience together on a Tuesday evening. It was also enjoyable listening to some familiar music from my youth while waiting and then consuming my meal. I also selected onion rings which were thinly sliced and had a flaky texture, but these can cool quickly it seemed, but were tasty. I tried the chocolate and vanilla mixed/twist malt and a piece of raspberry pie. The malt was delicious, but the pie was a little dry although I finished it quickly. I also appreciated seeing the work ethic of Isabell meticulously maintaining the dining room tables carefully. I asked some folks in town about the new ownership and a few indicated "hit or miss", but for me on this evening it was a hit. Hopefully the new ownership adapts and adjusts by being a good listener to a customer base that provides feedback so it can be a thriving business for years to come in this unique location. The batter was that perfect golden crisp where every bite had that little crunch, but the fish itself was flaky and melt-in-your-mouth soft. You know when something is fried just right and not heavy or greasy at all? That. And the tartar sauce?? Not your average situation. It had this fresh, almost elevated flavor that made everything even better. I was literally dipping every last bite like I didn't trust the plate not to disappear. But honestly, what made it even more special was the people. Every single staff member was so kind and welcoming, and the chef actually came out to talk with us. I got to thank him personally for making me such an amazing gluten-free meal, which meant a lot because that's not always easy to find.
