This is our favorite restaurant. The food is always fantastic and the service good. I love seeing what the flatbread creation is.

The smell that smacks you in the face as you're walking up the sidewalk, is enough to make you want to move in...I'll take a cot in the kitchen please! They have a mini-butcher shop, an awesome bar, and the best meat menu! This is a "meat freak's" paradise! The staff is pretty kick ass too...and very good-looking to boot! They are doing a really good thing here and I'm so glad they are in my neighborhood! I've eaten the Block Burger add bacon...the simplest, most delicious burger ever! I've also had the pork rinds, pork chop entree and the cornmeal fried trout...all 5-star offerings! The only negative point I have, is the acoustics are terrible...when the restaurant is busy you can hardly hear yourself think, let alone your server or your dining companions...they should really look at that, however, I would never take any points away for that because the food is that darn good!!! The next time I'm by myself, I'll have to take Danielle B's advise and sit at the bar for the specials! read more

Solid food. Excellent friendly service. Relaxed, hip atmosphere. I had their special salad (roasted pear with feta and walnuts on a bed of romaine) with grilled salmon on top and a shared side of Mac and cheese. I thought the salad was overdressed and the salmon was over-seasoned. However, the Mac and cheese was perfect and just the way I like it. In case you're wondering, the m&c at The Block is not béchamel based. Instead, shreds of cheese are simply baked with the pasta (and bacon should you choose). Heavenly spoonfuls of yum. Had I gotten one of their meatier items, I think I would have been much happier with my main dish. I'll definitely be back to give their burger or their daily special cut of beef a try. read more

Yum. I've been three times, and each time I've either licked a plate clean, literally, or been told not to by my partner. Yeah, there's minimal decoration, sure the servers don't memorize the specials but the food...the food...the food is bliss. The bacon jam made me go to the Internet to hunt recipes...the pork chop had my partner talking about it for days on end... Our son decided he liked hot dogs whe he had theirs....the potted pork was something I ordered on a whim and threatened to lick out the jar it came in. I could go on and on. And to top it all off there's the whole locavore (except the fish...really? Then take the fish off the menu) angle. Love. Love. Love. read more

I really can't think of anything bad to say about this place! I have eaten there twice and verbally (and loudly) moaned in food pleasure over each meal! Meal One: We Appz'd on the Assorted Breads. Safe choice, but wonderful selections! My dinner entree was the Amish Chicken. Very tender and juicy and the potato hash was wonderful! Meal Two: The Appz was the Potted Pig, and the Flash Fried Brussels Sprouts. The potted pig was plated creatively having to use a spoon to dive into the pork (texture of a country pate) and then add your toppings from the pickled selections of veggies they gave you either on a cracker or bread. It was good.... BUT If you REALLY want a surprising treat, get the Flash Fried Brussels Sprouts! Holy YUM. If Brussels Spouts could ever be considered candy.... you found it here. They flash fry them and put them in a dish with onions, almonds and bacon! What a TREAT! I chose (after tasting my buddies last visit) the Pork Chop. And I remembered correctly, it was fantastic! The pork was perfectly seasoned and cooked and they put it over a bed of sweet potatoes and topped it with apple slaw. So many flavors that melded together perfectly! and YES I ate my entire plate! Dessert we each got one and shared - table of four here-just for reference ;) We got the S'mores pudding. They topped with semi burned marshmallows. Holy yum. and the pudding was topped with candied pecans. I can not recall the name of the dessert our friends got, but we tried it and it was good as well! I do remember it had cinnamon ice cream. I'm not going to lie, the wait was a bit horrendous. They don't take reservations, so if you're wanting to zip in and out, you make want to eat here suuuuuuuper early. Around 6:30pm on a Friday night for 3 people, the wait was about 50 minutes. The bar is great for waiting, but it is tiny. I don't drink alcohol, but my other dinnermates did and enjoyed the selection quite a bit. Price for somethings can be a bit high, but worth it for most things (not for the bourbon). I ordered the ale and cheese appetizer, spinach salad, and chocolate pudding. All three were amazing. With this being a butcher shop, I should have ordered meat, but I just wasn't feeling it that night. The ale and cheese is tasty, but the real stars are the pretzels that are served with it. TO DIE FOR. Soft, hot, and perfectly salted. The spinach salad came dressed well. I'm usually not a huge fan of beets but eat them because they're supposed to be good for you. You can barely taste them but the texture of the beets is a nice complement to the salad. Chocolate pudding pot is served with freshly toasted homemade marshmallows. A winner in our book as well! We easily found parking on the street. Keep your eyes peeled though, one of my friends who arrived after us had a bit of trouble locating a spot to park. The staff is pretty friendly and they let us sit there after our meal was over for quite a bit of time. Hands down, without a doubt, my favorite restaurant in St. Louis. I go here every time I visit. Also, the best happy hour ever. My favorite bartender, Josh, makes a mean dirty martini (only $5 during happy hour!) and just gives us all around fabulous service every time we're in town. They use the highest quality meats and ingredients and you can really taste the difference. Things you must try: potted pig, any of their sliders, their ribs (yum), their wings, their burgers, their anything. Ok, it sounds like all I do is eat meat, but actually I'm very picky with my meat and only eat organic, so I very rarely eat meat out. That should show the quality you'll get at The Block. Go there! I have never seen my dining companion refuse to finish a cocktail. This was a specialty cocktail at The Block. I took a sip and it seemed pretty tasteless. Also, an appetizer was only half eaten. It seems that The Block's menu is misleading: braised brussel sprouts has very few brussel sprouts in it, and the watermelon salad has very little watermelon in it. This place likes strong flavors. For example, a strong tomato jam with strong cheddar grits in the shrimp and grits. The mixture works, but it takes some getting used to. So, the food will not bring us back, the drinks will keep us away, and the noise level has made sure we have crossed this restaurant off our list. read more

Haven't even got in the door but after waiting for 1.5 hours after they said "45mins to hour". And then watching them tell every person after us it would be 45mins to 1 hour to grow the line even larger...I feel like if they were just honest and tell people that the wait was 1.5-2 hours then all of the people in line wouldn't be so upset. We had nice service from Jim but the bean spread with grilled bread was so salty, we opted not to stay for dinner. Not to mention, there was a very limited selection of good wines by the glass. NOT a place to order a steak. I previously gave this restaurant five stars because of all of the incredible appetizers, which my husband and I made a meal of the first time we went. Those are still amazing, and I will always love this restaurant for the apps. BUT. We went back later to order steaks, and I was shocked by how terrible it was. My incredibly expensive steak tasted worse than the $4 meat on sale at Schnucks. It was literally terrible. I was very excited to try the Block based on the butcher/bar concept alone. The butcher part proved more gimmick than reality, but I was pleased with my first experience and will likely go back. I really would have liked to have given them 3 1/2 stars instead of 4 over some minor, but notable problems, but rounded up over the potential for slight improvement. 1) The noise was overwhelming. The minimalist decor was cool to me, but all of the hard surfaces made the sound unbearable. We couldn't carry on a conversation across a 5-top table. 2) The potted pig app was good, but bread heavy and the pork confit too dry. The dish was saved by the delicious chutney). 3) My porterhouse steak was served in a bath of BBQ sauce that overwhelmed the meat. It spoiled all but the portion without sauce (which was flavorful and cooked as ordered). 4) We had heard to avoid the mixed cocktails, which we were told were weak and pricey, but our neat bourbons were so thrifty in their pour we felt compelled to switch to wine (which was a very good cab, sorry the name alludes me). Staff was friendly and service prompt. Prices seemed reasonable and the portion sizes good. Worth a trip if you haven't been. A welcome addition to Webster. Oh, last thought: The outdoor seating was clearly an after-thought. You're pretty much on the sidewalk. read more

Oh wow this place makes me really happy. I have had The Block on my "to-visit" list for a while and finally made it for dinner. Let's start with the specials. Different every night and our waitress was AWESOME at explaining everything and answering my mother's ridiculous questions. Given that The Block butchers on site, we had to order the meat charcuterie platter. I couldn't tell you what I had but every part of it was amazing. The presentation and pairings of breads, meats, and sauces were perfect. Dinner came along and my party ordered the following: Cut of the day: Ribeye steak, pulled pork sandwich and the pork dumplings. While I tried everything, the pork dumplings stole the show. Rich and savory, not for those on a diet, but worth every bite. The steak was cooked perfectly and the pulled pork made a great leftover lunch the next day. I will definently be back again. I'll encourage my dining companions to order new things and I'll order the pork dumplings and pretend to share. read more

I loved The Block so much the first time around that when my dad came in town and wanted to have dinner with me and my sister, I immediately suggested this Webster Groves gem. And while I'm still a fan of the restaurant, I have to knock them down a star. This time, I ordered The Block burger. It's just an 8 oz burger with swiss cheese. It's served with french fries. I subbed swiss cheese for pepperjack with no problem. My dad and sister both ordered the pulled pork sandwiches. I didn't sample them, but they seemed to enjoy them okay. So here's where the problems start. And while they're pretty minor problems, they're still worth mentioning. My dad and sister both subbed sauteed spinach for the pickled veggies that come with most dishes. There was a $2 upcharge to sub, which I thought was a bit pricey, but whatever. That's not the problem. No, the problem is how ridiculously SALTY the spinach was. It literally tasted like it was swimming in ocean water. It was so bad, they had to send it back for a re-do. Strike one. Strike two? My burger. You know what? I need to just STOP ordering burgers when I go out to eat. Because other than Seamus McDaniels, every single burger place I've visited CANNOT get my burger cooked properly. I order my burger cooked medium. Always and forever. Medium burgers should be pink in the middle. Not red. Not brown. PINK. Has there been some sort of burger cooking convention where they've changed the rules and I just don't know about it? Because my burger was definitely brown in the middle. As in WELL-DONE. Whyyyyy does this ALWAYS happen? I didn't say anything (I never do), because I'm not the type of person to send food back unless there's something REALLY wrong with it; something that renders it inedible (like the super salty spinach). No use in wasting food or being an insufferable bitch. But you know what? Either I'm going to start ordering my burgers medium-rare or cutting them in half on the spot and sending them back if they're cooked incorrectly. Yeah, I'm going to be THAT girl. When my mom was coming in town and meeting my new boyfriend for the first time I wanted for us to go to a semi-casual, local restaurant. So naturally, I turned to twitter and a friend recommended The Block to me. After reading the reviews I figured it wouldn't hurt.. little did I know I was about to have the best meal I've had in a LONG time! The wait time was longer than what they told us but trust me when I say this, if they tell you the wait is gonna be 6 hrs, WAIT. Yes, it is THAT good!! While we were waiting a bartender came around and took our drink order, which I don't think has ever happened to me before. He was so friendly and went above and beyond what I felt like was his "job." After what felt like forever we were finally seated and the waiter promptly addressed our table. Now I know this may sound stupid but I didn't realize that they butcher all meats ON SITE. Words can't express how happy that made me! The waiter answered all of our questions and we decided to order the Shrimp & Grits and Braised Short Ribs special to start. Oh.my.Goodness. Ah-mazing. I seriously have no words to describe how great they were! For entrees my mom and I ordered the Chicken and vegetables in a basalmic reduction and the beau ordered a ribeye and fries. I don't think we even talked once our plates hit the table, which says a lot for my mom! Even though we were stuffed we decided to order dessert, chocolate cake and apple crisp. Next time we will bypass cause it wasn't all that great but can you really expect a restaurant that specializes in meats to be all that great at desserts? If you haven't been yet, GO! read more

Came here for happy hour and was presently surprised! Sat at the bar and was greeted by a wonderful bartender (too bad I forgot her name!). She served us a Jenny from the Block and a negroni. For a place that doesn't seem like drinks would be their forte, our bartender did very, very well. My girlfriend and I ordered 3 things: garlic-herb fries, amish chicken wings, sliders The fries were made crispy and the herb amount was great. I thought they were over salted and required me to constantly have to drink my ice water The chicken wings were okay. I thought they would go the extra level with The Block hot sauce, but honestly they just tasted like normal wings from any fast food joint The sliders are where this place gets its 3 stars. If the chef is willing to use pork instead of beef, DO IT. The pork sliders are amazing, and this is without exaggeration. The meat melts in your mouth aided by cheesy goodness (too bad I didn't get the type of cheese used) This place is definitely a fun place to go for happy hour. I had a gift certificate to use up for my birthday and since my husband and I weren't able to make it out for a date alone, we took my 2 y/o son. I was a little worried since dining out with little ones is always a crapshoot, but the experience was pretty great. There were a few interesting dishes on the menu, but I went with the open faced fried egg sandwich. The sandwich was flavored flawlessly, but the sandwich itself was really messy and hard to eat. I wouldn't necessarily deduct for that, but I probably wouldn't go with it again if I also had to deal with a toddler at the table. My husband had the pork and dumplings and it was good, but I wasn't blown away. My son seemed thrilled with his ham and cheese sandwich and french fries. Shock. We also got an order of the flash fried brussels sprouts which were amazing, but a tad too greasy for my taste. Still awesome, but just be prepared for the amount of oil dripping from them. The absolute gold star of the night, though, was the homemade ice cream. We got the coconut brown sugar which I was skeptical of ordering, but holy cow, did it deliver! I'd order gallons of this stuff if I could!!! It was silky smooth and full of flavor. If we find ourselves in Webster Groves again for dinner, I'd go back. read more

I didn't know this place existed, however when I checked in on Facebook, multiple likes came about so I knew I had to be somewhere great. We sat at the bar and drank a few beers (local which was great!) and had the Butcher's Plate appetizer plate and was great to try a bunch of different meats I would not normally buy. We also had the fries which were great. The bacon jam was to die for. I love anything bacon and this place had it! It was a VERY VERY busy place and people were waiting a very long time for a table but the bartender was great - talked about the beers and the food and make everyone feel comfortable. Hubby and I visited here for the first time on a "let's meet for dinner" whim on the recommendation of one of his coworkers. OMG so happy we did. Since our first visit, we've returned twice more and even bought a gift certificate to give as a wedding gift. First and foremost: bacon jam. Literally, start your meal here. It's on the apps menu (and on the $5 app deal if you come for happy hour and are able to grab a seat in the bar). This melty, bacon-y, slightly sweet concoction is served with bread, though I actually liked it better on their housemade pretzels. My recommendation? Get an order of pretzels & beer cheese and bacon jam & bread then switch the dippers. Yum. Every day brings a new set of specials covering the gamut of their offerings: salads, drinks, flatbreads, fish, steak, meat and more meat. Hubby absolutely loved his Tilefish special served atop a succotash and topped with - wait for it - BACON JAM! My staple is the Farm Egg Sandwich with bacon, served with super addictive garlic fries. Other highlights: - Josh the bartender. Though he's not quite got our names down, (and frankly, I only just learned his last time), he's attentive and recognizes and welcomes us back every time. - Happy hour beer & wine. A list of not-just-domestics are priced around $2.50 and the cheapest option in each of their types of wine are $5. - Meat market. You can buy their meat and of course, BACON JAM. - Ice cream. We haven't tried it yet, but they make it there. It's on our list if we can ever manage to save room. - Easy parking. The Block became my dad and I's favorite restaurant over this last summer. We probably ate their over thirty times over the course of the season, it really is a special place. Believe me, you really can taste the difference in the freshness of their meats. Some highlight dishes to check out are the hamburger (which is one of the absolute best I've ever had in STL); the wine braised pork (so tender you can cut it with a fork and covered in a gravy made from pork drippings and marscapone cheese. AMAZING!); and the pork and dumplings (after trying these, I honestly considered giving up on chicken and dumplings for the rest of my life). I've made my way through most of the menu (the appetizers excepting) and honestly there isn't a single bad thing on the menu. If you're looking for some extra green in your diet, they're flash fried brussel sprouts are wonderful. As for desserts, I can only speak for the ice creams, but every one I've tried is great (my personal favorite is the bacon candy). Staff is friendly and quick. The decor is simple but warm. This is a pretty good all-purposes restaurant; great for a casual date or a business luncheon. They could do with mixing up their specials a bit more, especially when it comes to the sandwiches. read more

I came here with two friends who are not very adventurous eaters, so I was a little worried (I'm much more of a foodie) but I was not disappointed. I got a salad with an egg on top that was poached and then rolled in bread crumbs and fried. It was crazy good! The pork and dumplings was delicious and perfect for January. Food is fantastic although clearly you will be eating meat. Our waiter was really great at explaining everything and when one of my friends wasn't sure what wine she would like, he went to the bar to ask about which choice would be better. Maybe he should have known that, but I was glad to see that he didn't try to make something up, and he came back quickly anyway. The atmosphere was very nice. It has a butcher shop kind of ambiance as you walk in. The staff was friendly and explained the off the menu specials. I ordered one if the specials, it was described as "a beef tender that was cut from the shoulder that was full of flavor and had a bit of a different texture" I have never in my life not finished a steak and not taken it home with me. When I asked out server about the toughness she said "I said it had a different texture". The "fall of the bone rib that was server alongside the steak was charred but edible, it however, had the flavor of a smokey beef jerky. One other thing that I found odd is that the salt and pepper are in open dishes on each table. This is nice for decoration however I couldn't bring myself to use it. Unless it is replaced with each new diner I find this a health issue. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing or maybe,as they butcher all meet In house, they are trying to use more if the cow than they should. read more

Our food experience here was just wonderful! I am giving this 5 stars because several times throughout our meal my husband and I would look at each other and just be like "Oh my goooooodnesss this is so good!" and it really is. The food is just that good. A few friends have alerted me to the awesomeness of this place but we just had not made it over. Our waitress was a little "green" but still very wonderful. I had some pork and dumplings and a lemontini. The pork was so good. OMgoodness was the pork good! Perfect taste - bravo! read more

If you like eating pigs, you will like The Block. They specialize in pork dishes. However, I tried a beef brisket sandwich. It was really, really good. Smokey, tender, and juicy. The burger that was also served at my table was significantly overcooked. It was ordered medium and came out closer to well done. We ate it anyway. Everything was good. The fried pork skin appetizer was a bit too salty. Overall, I was impressed, and will be back. But if I'm spending $11 on a burger, I'm hoping it will be cooked closer to the correct temperature next time. read more

This place is awesome. A casual atmosphere. Yet, the dishes are excellently prepared. Took the wife there for her birthday. We started off with their homemade pork rinds. The were very good being light and crunchy. They even crackled in your mouth without biting down. This was kinda fun for us. For our main dishes, The wife got a steak, and I got the pork chop. Both dishes were were made very well including the sides. Everything on the plate came together as the sides complemented the meat. Most of all the sauce with the entree was phenomenal. I didn't want the meal to end. Both me and the wife laughed, and said we've never been this tempted to lick our plates in public before. Yeah... It was that good. Hubby and I decided to try The Block out for dinner this past Saturday. It's always been our list to try and I'm now wondering why we waited. This place was fantastic! There was a bit of wait, we were quoted 30 minutes, but I think we were seated in 20 minutes. It helped there were only two of us. I saw quite a few larger parties and it appeared they had a rather long wait. While we waited the hostess took our drink order and the bar tender delivered the drinks. I thought this was a nice touch since we didn't have to crowd the bar and try to flag down the bar tender. My husband ordered the burger and said it was pretty good. I had a feeling this meant he liked it, but it didn't 'wow' him. I took a bite of the burger and I was impressed! You could tell this was quality beef. And they don't over season it so you can really taste the juiciness of the beef. As someone who rarely eats red meat, let alone ground beef I greatly appreciated all the flavor of this simple burger. I ordered a special they had that night which was a flank steak with cheddar grits, and an arugula/spring mix with cherry tomatoes. As I mentioned, I don't eat too much red meat, but when you go to a place like The Block you're inclined to fulfill your red meat quota for the month. I was a tad worried the flank steak would be tough or too well cooked. Those worries were cast aside with my first bite. This was hands down one of the better meals I've had in quite a while. The meat was tender, seasoned with pepper and a few other spices I couldn't figure out and just enough salt. I hate when they season a steak with so much salt that it drowns out the other seasonings. This was done perfectly. I enjoyed every single bite. I shared some of it with my husband and he too was impressed. In fact, he finished off my plate with no problems. I did order the seasonal bread pudding for dessert. That night it was with peaches and a blackberry syrup. This was just ok. I expected more since the peaches have been so good this summer. Luckily our entrees made me soon forget about this boring dessert. We wan't wait to go back to this place and try more items on the menu. Great meal great atmosphere!! The place was packed and seamed so lively. We had a small wait time and it seemed to go fast. Had a great table in the middle of the restaurant. Drinks where great had the appetizer special witch was Parmesan dumpling it was great!! And we had the garlic pork rinds. The fried Brussels sprouts! And the bacon jam. Awesome HH in Webster! For one, HH goes until 7pm so there's plenty of time to get there after work (and get at least a couple drinks in on HH special :-) ). They have $5 cocktail/draft beer specials and certain $2.50 bottles. They also have a number of bar eats for $5-$8. Per Yelp's recommendation I tried the Potted Pig and it was a fantastic plate of food. The pork confit has a pastey/tuna-like texture; on its own it's a tad too pork-y but with the pickled veg and grape chutney you get a nice balance of salty, sweet, and acid in each bite. I also appreciate that the bread is grilled and seasoned. These little details make a difference. I also like the ambience. Relaxed, rustic-hipster. They sell some of their own meats at the front counter - bonus points in my book. read more

Visited with a group of foodies. Apps: I had the Butcher's Plate appetizer which includes house made braunschweiger, butcher's terrine, grilled duck sausage, roasted turkey galantine, smoked duck ham. It certainly was a treat to savor all the different meats. I also got to try the Pork Rinds which was light, crispy, salty and spicy. The Flatbread special (oven roasted turkey breast, cheddar cheese, smoked bacon, beer braised onions, honey BBQ sauce) was possibly the most scrumptious flatbread combo I've ever had, sweet and salty all in one! I tried the Potted Pig which many have hailed as the house special (pork and apple confit) but it was rather bland and had a rather strange texture (think tuna salad, but pork), I'd pass on it. Entrees: I got the White wine braised pork, which was fork tender, sitting on a most delicious apple and celery root whipped red potatoes, drizzed with country milk gravy. I also tried the trout entree, which was lightly breaded and very savory on a flaky perfectly cooked fish. Sides: The sweet potato and bacon hash was delicious with cubes of equally sized sweet potato and bacon, every bite was a perfect mix of sweet and salty! Dessert: I got the Maple and Bacon Bread Pudding, which works very well. Had a southern gourmet feel to it. I have a mixed review on this place. We went with a party of 7 and only had a 15 minute wait on a Friday night for a bachelorette party dinner group, so the wait wasn't bad. Service was pretty snappy, but our waitress was kind of a snooty b-word. The girl next to me ordered pinot noir just like I did, and when it arrived, we noticed the coloring was off, like it had been watered down tremendously. After each taking a sip, we looked at each other and knew something was off with it. It tasted weird, like it had been corked a week ago. We weren't trying to pay $8 for a glass of spoiled kool-aid, so we VERY kindly and apologetically asked our waitress if she would mind bringing us a different glass, to which she responded, "Well, do you want something different then or....? Cause if I bring you another glass of pinot, it's just going to be the exact same thing, so..." ...Uh...okay, durh. Obviously we want something different. Moving past that, the food was pretty good. Amongst the table we tried the BBQ pork rinds which were bomb, the bacon jam which was also great, a beet salad and a kale salad, all of which were delicious. Our main entrees were good, but overly salty. Like, SUPER salty. My fries burned my tongue with all the salt, and the girl next to me had a pulled pork sandwich and only ate half because she said she could already feel her ankles swelling from all the salt, haha! I had the special which was lobster mac and cheese with shrimp. It was good, but very very heavy and rich. The portion was WAY too big for such a dense entree. I wish they had served it half or third the size in a small boat or something. Haha. Anyway, it was okay. Our waitress did split our bill without much of a fuss which was nice. I'll probably be back another time to sample some other things. read more

I think the food here is as good or better than the other fabulous STL restaurants! As a former city dweller, I've been underwhelmed with county restaurants. We live in Webster now and are happy to have The Block added to the list of great places to eat, along with Milagro and Robust. We took our kids, 20 months and 4 1/2 years, and felt it was a good place for the adults and kids to enjoy great food. The kids' menu is more creative than most places (the Mac n' cheese with bacon is amazing) and they include a delicious cookie with each kids' meal. We've been several times and have tried the shrimp n' grits, steak, trout, bean dip, and hamburger. All were top notch. The desserts are also wonderful. I can't comment on the beer because I had wine or a mixed drink each time. Downsides are the noise (can get very crowded and VERY loud), the limited space, and the lack of seating or even breathing room in the front. You have to stand smashed against the wall with waiters and patrons tripping over you if there is a wait, which is very likely on a weekend night. If you have squirmy kids, it would probably be difficult because of the time it takes to get your food. read more

Overall, very good food and a great place go if you don't mind a crowd and lots of noise. 1) Small place, but neatly decorated with bare minimum lighting. I had to use my cell phone to read the menu. :) 2) Great service even with no empty tables on the weekend. Food came out in a timely manner. 3) About a 30 minute wait for a table of eight on Sat. night at 8:00. Not bad! 4) I never really trust mixed drinks when ordering at the table, so I'll just say that they were o.k. and leave it at that. 5) Salmon was perfectly done and fresh. It was an off menu option served with a thin tomato-based sauce with lots of flavor. It had a crusted topping that was a bit too powerful for the sauce and salmon. 6) I sampled the beef medallion and really liked that a lot too. Everyone said their Rib-eye steaks were great too. Cooked just right for everyone and a nice portion size too. I'll go back when looking to spend a few dollars on a nice dinner that's close to home. read more

Had the steak special. Very well seasoned and cooked. Cocktails are spot on with a balance of strength and taste. The Brussels sprouts appetizer is nuked to crisp with a nice crunch, kind of like a jerky. The service was great. Definitely the place to go with someone special. Pleasantly surprised. Actually more than that. It was a really nice dinner with great tasting food. I wasn't quite sure what to expect. Based on the various reviews I had already read, I thought it would be a noisy place with decent, but overrated, food. It turned out to be a fairly intimate dinner with food that was generally top notch. We arrived fairly early in the evening, so when we were seated the place was mostly empty. Our table was along the front wall of windows, which perhaps kept noise levels down. The restaurant is dimly lit, with small light fixtures throughout and small candles on the tables. This, kept an intimate feel throughout the dinner. Even as the place filled up there was noise due to it being one large room. However, it seemed to all just merge into the background. Service was competent, with a water bottle left at the table and dishes brought and cleared promptly. Our dessert took a little while to arrive, but we realized that was because the bread pudding was cooked fresh after we ordered it - so that actually was a plus. The flash fried Brussel sprouts (house-cut bacon, caramelized onions, lemon, toasted almonds) appetizer was excellent. Sprouts were extremely smooth - no bitterness, and the other ingredients gave a fullness of flavor to them. The potted pig (confit of pork, grape & raisin chutney, house-made pickled vegetables, country bread) appetizer also was pretty good. I got it because it was something unique that I was unlikely to find elsewhere - at least as far as I know. I actually thought the pork confit was relatively bland, but the chutney and vegetables to put over the confit on the bread made for great pairings. My entree, based on our server's recommendation, was the white wine braised pork (whipped potatoes, grilled baby broccoli, roasted apples & turnips, country gravy). She told me it was fork tender and melted in your mouth. And she was correct! Actually, the entire dish, not just the pork, was very savory and satisfying. The wife's entree was one of the specials for the evening, a petite filet. It came with roasted potatoes, vegetables, and a sauce. The server described it as actually being more of a shoulder cut, so there was more chew and flavor to it. This actually sounded pretty good to us. So I guess it was really more like a shoulder cut in a filet shape. Regardless, that extra chew and flavor made for a top notch cut of beef. And finally dessert. I got the bread pudding, which for the night was a chocolate and peanut butter type of concoction - I can't remember the exact description anymore - with a scoop of house made ice cream on the side. It was hot from the oven, very dense, but more cake like than I was expecting. While the flavor was good, it was more subdued than I preferred. I guess I'm more used to and prefer those New Orleans restaurants' bread puddings. The wife went for the house made potted pudding. It's a chocolate pudding a came with two made-from-scratch toasted marshmallows on top. The marshmallows were excellent, tasting like snickerdoodles, but the pudding really just tasted like any good chocolate pudding. We also thought it would be a warm or hot pudding, but it was chilled. Actually, while the desserts were not bad, they were a disappointment compared to the rest of the evening. And I know that desserts are pretty much profit centers for restaurants, but both were pretty small and $8 for the bread pudding & $7 for the chocolate pudding seemed excessive. People often split desserts, but we didn't and I don't think they are quite large enough to satisfy if split anyway. Overall, though, I thought this was a fine place and meal. read more

This is a unique review for me. From a restaurant stand point The Block is a 4 star establishment. However earlier in the year at the Urban Chestnut May Fest, the Blocks Porchetta sandwich was a solid 5 star item, unfortunately it was not a menu item during my recent visit to the restaurant. The entrance to the Block features the bar and meat counter. Why the place has a meat counter is beyond me but it is a cool feature to have. The meat counter cuts into some prime real estate for what could be an expanded bar. The only reason I point this out is because the Block does not take reservations and it would have been nice if there was a larger area to mingle in before a table in the dining room opened up. The dining room itself is fairly dim, but not in a bad way. The lighting concept works very well with the rustic decor of the place! The food in general is very nice! There are a few items that look better on paper then they turn out to be, but generally speaking there are some inspiring items on the menu. The spinach salad with guanciale and blue cheese is a masterpiece and a must have menu item! A lot of people rave about the Potted Pig (pork confit) as an appetizer, and for good reason, this dish rocks. For my money however, I have to say go with the bacon jam, it takes bacon to a whole new level! While the menu does feature Missouri trout and a few shell fish dishes, it is hard not to order meat at the Block. You can't go wrong with any of the pork dishes but the wine braised pork shoulder is a real game changer. The light white wine compliments the pork so nicely and goes great with red potatoes and gravy. The braised pork is the dish that stays on my mind from my few visits to the Block. To get that 5th star, I would say open up the bar to allow for a more accommodating waiting area. Also the menu features A LOT of meat and not a lot of smoked items, food for thought.... All in all, the Block is a Webster experience that should be on everyone's list. Enjoy the food and don't be shy about trying something slightly outside of your comfort zone. This is some of the best meat I have had, and I grew up on a livestock farm. I get fresh meat from my parents' house whenever I want it, so I am a bit of a snob, especially about pork and beef. The Potted Pig appetizer is absolutely amazing. Try it. You'll love it. I had the Special that night, which was a hanging steak and braised short rib with asparagus and potatoes. It was great, and the steak was prepared perfectly rare. My husband had the open-faced egg sandwich. It looked gross to me, but I don't like eggs. He said it was amazing, so I'll take his word for it. ;) We didn't have to wait for a table, and it was about 5:30 on a Friday evening. The waitstaff was quick and friendly. read more

The Block has served me the best steak I've ever had, three times in a row. More than just perfectly cooked and tender meat, the service is fantastic and the local beer selection makes this place one of STL's hidden gems. To recap our latest visit, it was a busy Friday evening. We were seated within five minutes. The wait-staff was quickly upon us, serving me a local STL brew in its respective mug/glassware. Meaning, if you order an Urban Chestnut, it's served in an "official" mug from the Urban Chestnut brewery. We started with the shrimp and grits appetizer. Coming fresh off the grill gave the shrimp a nice smoky flavor, along with a hint of bacony goodness. For my main dish, I chose the rib-eye steak, medium with steamed broccoli. It was cooked perfectly, and despite how busy the restaurant was, all of our table's entrees were out in less than 25 minutes. The original "Block" steak sauce is solid, giving some flavor variety to an already tasty and tender steak. It's pricey ($29), but after a few bites, you realize it's worth the price of admission. My wife chose the chicken dish, which is some of the most tender chicken I've ever encountered. The steamed veggies were so good, they rivaled the meats. Our friends finished off with a bowl of homemade ice cream. Again, excellent. On a final note, the wait-staff has always been in a great mood, they're very attentive, and their enthusiasm for the meats and beers only make the experience more enjoyable.
