This place is uber cute. We were in the mood for Asian comfort food (since we are banned from the entire continent temporarily lol) so we popped in to grab a bite and were pleasantly surprised! The spot was rockin'! It's set up almost Hawker stall style (think Singapore) with each spot specializing in their signature dish. Nice music pumping while folks socialized while social distancing and EVERYONE had on their masks! I love to see it! We stopped at Balo Kitchen & Bold Dumpling to grab a couple of dishes. We also grabbed drinks at the bar. The red sangria was really bad (all citrus rind) which means it was probably sitting for more than 24 hours so we sent that back and got the Paloma, which was was made perfectly! First time at this food hall in Annandale. Place was empty, maybe 2 other people there. We ordered: Mini bao bun w/ pork belly, Spicy noodles w/ pork & dumplings and Steak hibachi The pork in the bao bun was super super sweet and honestly I didn't enjoy it as much. The texture was nice though. The spicy noodle ... it tasted like Shin Ramyun instant noodles that was doctored up with the pork flavor and dumplings that came in it. Maybe I'm just not a dumpling fan as the skin was very very thick. I did get a little taste of the steak hibachi and it was good. Serving size was plentiful. read more

The food at Balo Kitchen is great. The Taiwanese chicken nuggets are not that spicy but tasted great. They are large chicken thighs so a little more meat than the ones at Jumbo Jumbo. But the star was the pork belly and rice. I got the one with 24 hr Pork belly. That pork belly was so good. The rice is actually crispy so it adds some texture. The scallion-ginger oil and pineapple fish sauce really elevated this simple dish. I wish the Block in Rockville had this. Maybe it's a good thing as I would be going there on a weekly basis. read more

Annandale is the VA Asian food capitol and this place is one of the reasons why! The food court / bar vibe is something perfect for a large group of friends to keep everyone satisfied and having a good time! I particularly loved the soup options at the back of the room although surprisingly the brussel Sprouts with meat added was very tasty (and healthy!) As well. I got the curry soup with 1 level of heat with ramen and pork belly. The meat was absolutely incredible and the soup was SO tasty. For someone that can't handle too much heat, I was surprised the 1 level barely tasted spicy at all. I may try level 2 or higher next time! For drinks we LOVED the Mango special and also loved that the happy hour went until 9 pm which included a $3 discount in cocktails. It also applies to beer and wine! There is hand sanitizer at the front door. I got the anything but basic affogato. I did not expect it to have cookies (was not listed on the menu), but it was a treat. Everything was phenomenal!!! I ate at the Bold Dumpling place with my family and it was delicious! I ordered the steak hibachi bowl and it was really tasty! I had to try the soup dumplings and it was amazing!! The broth that was used for the dumpling was very flavorful especially paired with the sauce on the side!! We also tried SnoCream boba and it was delicious we had the Thai milk tea and matcha milk tea they were both the perfect amount of sweet!!! Definitely will be coming back!! Highly recommend!! This place is super cool! It's a mini food hall that has a lot of great food and drink options. It's cutely decorated and has a nice outdoor seating area as well. I tried the fish sauce wings, steak frites, and soup dumplings. Everything was so flavorful and savory. I also got an ube latte from snow cream. The options here look great and the ube that I got definitely had a good flavor. It was too sweet for me though, so I should've asked for less sweetener, so I'll have to try it again next time! read more

Great location in Annandale with plenty of free outdoor parking right outside. During nights (at least on the weekend), The Block plays music pretty loudly and there was even a DJ setting up when I had arrived. There are outdoor seating options as well. I recently learned they were the first foodhall in Northern Virginia! My family and I ordered drinks from Snocream and the caffeine in mine kept me up until 3 am after our 9:00 pm visit, ha ha ha! Cute, aesthetic asian food hall. Has plenty of indoor seating with a few picnic benches outside. You select where you want to eat, order at the counter then bring the food to your table. There's plenty of options to choose from! COMBINATION DUMPLING PLATTER: We were shocked that 2/3 of the dumplings were fried. We were only expecting the kimchi dumplings to be fried per the menu description. However, the kimchi dumplings ended up being our favorite. We were pleasantly surprised and expected a harsher kimchi flavor, but the kimchi flavor was mild and blended well with the other flavors. The remainder of the dumplings were tasty, nothing too extraordinary. LASKA CURRY NOODLE SOUP: Wow! This dish was absolutely delicious and our favorite. Generous portion, wonderful curry flavor, perfect amount of spice and the noodles were perfectly cooked. Would definitely order again! DAN DAN NOODLES: These we're tasty. You definitely have to mix the noodles well to get the full flavor. Tons of free parking. Accepts cash and credit card. Some of the food vendors allow you to do self order on tablets and you need to use credit card for those. In terms of food options, it's pretty limited. They can options from sushi, ice cream, Chinese. Etc. in terms of pricing, it's bit expensive and their portions are small. We came here and ordered several dishes from their Dan Dan noodles, spicy pork wontons, pork soup dumplings, chicken/pork on rice and their Sautéed Brussel sprouts. The Dan dan noodles were a bit disappointing as it lacked much noodles. I've had better in other restaurants in the DMV area. The spice was there (you have the option of choosing spice level from a scale of 1-4. I chose 2) and the minced meat was plenty. However, it didn't feel like a complete meal. The portion was a bit small. The spicy wontons were okay. Nothing too special. The filling inside had tons of veggies that felt messy and couldn't taste much of the meat. Avoid their soup dumplings. Felt like it's something you can get at the grocery store. Literally like those pre-packaged soup dumplings. Their chicken/pork on rice was pretty good with plenty of protein. The sautéed sprouts were the star of all our dishes. A good hint of sweetness to it and pan fried well. The place is a bit pricey. Also, don't be fooled about the abundance of seating. Yes, they do have tons of seating, but it's tough to find an open spot to sit at. We came here around 2pm on a weekend and it was packed. It's okay for social gatherings, but you might want to consider to quieter location. Also, the interior of the place was a bit messy with dirty dishes at tables. Not sure if there is staff to collect them or post signs telling customers to put their dirty dishes away. read more

Bold Dumpling- Great fun atmosphere to get a bite to eat and watch a game on a Sunday afternoon. My girlfriend and I got some sticky mini bao buns and chicken soup dumplings. The buns were soft, like the way I like them reminds me of a nice cloud and happiness , and pork belly were crispy with a nice sauce to accompany the pork, but I forgot they were minis so not too sure if the size was worth the price ( I'm a 6'2 255 Guy) . Dumplings had some broth in them which was wonderful , I wish they served a side of it to poke a hole in the dumpling and put it in yourself. The service was very quick and friendly. Yessssss! I love this idea, multiple businesses under one roof. It reminds me of Waterside District in Norfolk and has a great sense of community. The brightly colored wall outside had me fooled that it was "just a foodhall." It's way more than that. It's like a mini foodie experience. The day we visited, there was no air conditioning, not the best thing when there's a lot of people all under one roof and food is being served. Still, it didn't break anyones spirits, we got involved with some ice cream to cool us down and fell in love with the ube coconut flavor from SnoCream. Not everyone knows how to make good ube anything, so I was pleasantly surprised that they hit the nail on the head with that flavor. Great job! I love the full bar which stays open later than the food establishments, the dining options (not forgetting dessert options too,) all under one roof. It's not too expensive, everything seems fairly priced, and it's instagram worthy - go on, make all your friends jealous. While food-wise this Block was better than the one in Pike & Rose, it still wasn't amazing. There are only 4 stores-- dumpling, Vietnamese, ice cream, and poke bowl-- and it has relatively limited seating. We came Saturday for lunch and we were lucky to snag a seat for a party of 5. The ambience isn't that nice and the venue is fairly small. There is ample free parking though. Almost everyone ordered from the Vietnamese place and while it wasn't that bad, it wasn't all that special. I got the curry chicken rice and both the chicken and rice were average, and the rice was clumped together and dry. My one friend that ordered the poke bowl thought it was alright but too saucy, there was practically a soup of sauce at the bottom of her bowl. read more

This was my first time going to the Block! I've heard of it from other people & was in the area so I decided to checkout the Annandale location! I got the eggplant & tofu Banh mi. It was not really my taste. I like eggplant but the texture & taste wasn't too great. This combination would usually work but in the banh mi it seemed to weigh it down. It was also pricey for a a banh mi in the area. Might try going again to try the other places in the food hall but not a fan of the banh mi here. The ambiance was also very bar like & seemed crowded. This location is the original spot and over the last few years, they have opened up several other locations. For many locals, this is THE low key spot on weekends. If you know, you know. Atmosphere differ based on the time and day of the week you visit. During the day time, it's a family friendly eatery with tons of Asian-influenced cuisines from snow cream desserts to Japanese rice bowls (hits the spot every time!). They also have a full bar for those looking for something to ease the long work day. In the evenings, this place is like a mini-club with actual DJs. I'm pescatarian so of course I'd recommend Pokèworks, but I heard amazing things about the Filipino food stand (heavy on the meat entrees). They have so much to choose from, each time I try something new, it's all so delicious and the meals never disappoint and I always make sure to get my sweet treat from snocream :) Pricing is also very reasonable. All the staff is super friendly & patient, especially on a busy day. On a nice day I like to enjoy my food on their outside patio space that has very comfy seats & many birds chirping nearby super peaceful and relaxing ambiance. Great concept, poor execution. While I generally enjoy the vendors at The Block, it's not a fun place to visit. It's small and you need to fight for table space. You will have to brush up against people in lines to maneuver your way around. It's super loud, not just from all the people, but from the blaring music. And it's child-friendly, so that makes it worse. So it's hectic and chaotic which means the patrons are super rude, because it's such a frantic place. Also, this woman runs around yelling at people. I was in line and she screamed at us for doing something wrong and pointed to this tiny sign no one could see. She needs be fired. The Block reminds me of a condensed version of Union Market in DC, but far less pretentious. This is a chill neighborhood spot complete with several restaurants offering fare such as poké, Thai street food, 'Asian comfort food', donuts and ice cream... oh, and ice cream donut sandwiches, which is what I had. There's also a bar, a DJ, and video games projected on the wall, as well as on several of the TV screens. Seating is all communal, which make this a great spot to meet up with friends, or maybe come in and make some new ones. Now, back to this ice cream donut sandwich... Vietnamese coffee flavored ice cream, snuggled in the warm embrace of a soft, chewy donut, covered in sprinkles and gummy bears, then topped with Nutella drizzle. Food porn of the highest order. The ice cream spot (I think it's called "Munch") offered all kinds of unique flavors such as ash coconut, which is a jet black ice cream made with edible charcoal (and if you're really a badass, you'll get to ash cone to match. It's not everyday that you get to eat a jet black ice cream cone) matcha Oreo, white chocolate pretzel brittle, blueberry Earl Grey, and Cinnamon Toast Crunch.
