The Black Whale is such a charming spot on City Island--the ambiance is everything, both inside and out! We sat on the outdoor patio, which was beautiful and relaxing. The only small downside was a few things falling from the trees into our food and drinks, but honestly, the atmosphere made up for it. I ordered the Homemade Meatloaf with Mushrooms & Bacon in a Red Wine Sauce, served with mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables--absolutely delicious! I also tried the Pan-Seared Maryland Crab Cakes, which were flavorful and perfectly cooked. Both dishes were satisfying and well-portioned. Definitely coming back--great food, great vibes, and a perfect spot for a cozy meal or a celebration.

Good ambiance and service is great. Food is good. Bartender is so cool and inviting. Makes good drinks. Quaint little place in city Island. Outside patio with antique furniture.

I stopped at The Black Whale for dinner with a whale of an appetite. Overall, they serve excellent food, but the service could use some work. Upon arriving, I was immediately seated. My waitress was extremely knowledgeable and gave me a rundown of their menu. I also conveyed to her my food allergies, one of which was tomato. Nevertheless, I was served bruschetta with tomato. When I asked for more bruschetta, but without the tomato, I was then again served bruschetta with tomato! Fortunately, my food allergies are quite mild, and in both cases, I was able to scrape the tomato off. However, the failure to communicate a patron's food allergies could have devastating consequences and is a service error that should never exist. The rough service aside, I did enjoy the food. I started out with a watermelon soup. Unlike other watermelon soups I've had in the past, their watermelon soup was less sugary. The somewhat neutral taste of the soup was perfectly complimented by watermelon chunks. The soup also came with oyster crackers - which I thought was extremely odd at first - but ended up pairing very well with the soup. For my entree, I had the Chicken Stroganoff. This was perhaps the best Chicken Stroganoff I've ever had. There was a perfect proportion of chicken to pasta, with the perfect amount of cheese. The sauce was excellent and tied the entire dish together.

As soon as you walk into this establishment you feel the artistic vibe of the interior decorator which transports your body to a serene state, I love the dessert choices which also transports your taste buds to a happy place. I have to say the service was good and the staff made you feel so welcomed. I highly recommend this place the prices are fair but parking might be challenging but with a little patience a parking spot will show up. Definitely recommend if you are in City Island in The Bronx

Anytime I want to cater to my seafood cravings and a nice date night with my love, I come here. Mussels were over the top great, juicy garlicky and flavorful. I also love their creativity indoors. It's dim, relaxing and cozy. Antiques everywhere. There is so much to look at and I love it because it gives you something to chat about.

On a sunny Saturday afternoon, the buzz on the street was that we were eating at the best restaurant in town. We waited for the restaurant to open. We were seated promptly. Very cute decor. We received complimentary bread (so it was so good). We ordered oysters, crab cake and apple fritter dessert. It was quite the multi course meal. Oysters were fresh and clean. Crab cake had some nice chunk of crab and it was flavorful. No dry crab cake here. The dessert was a huge portion. You can easily split the dessert with another person. Highly recommended it.

The food is the best food on City Island hands down! The staff is friendly but unfortunately they only take cash. It's seldom that I carry cash with me and definitely didn't expect that at a above average priced restaurant. But if that's not an issue for you, then I promise you won't be disappointed in anything about this beautiful place.

Fettuccine with shrimp, mussels, and crab meat in a spicy marinara sauce. Insane!

Service: 10/10 The employees were very friendly. They were kind and had a nice smile on their face. That is what customers should be looking for when being approached by waiters or waitresses. They were very helpful with the menu option. Food: 10/10 I started with their hot chocolate with whipped cream. Man! It was delicious. The whipped cream, by the way, is optional. It does not automatically come with the hot chocolate. The texture was just right. I picked a good day to drink hot chocolate. I have also ordered their standard Belgian Waffles with a side of sausage. I have to admit, I was slightly disappointed with the quantity of the waffle. They only give you one. Additionally, you'd have to ask for the butter. Butter does not automatically come with the waffles. The syrup is or at least should already be on the table once you're seated. Even though I only got one waffle, it was delicious. Furthermore, you have the option to add whipped cream to the waffles. They will add the whipped cream to the waffles for you. The same can be applied to pancakes. When all is said and done, they will offer you a blow-pop lollipop. Overall 9.5/10 I will be back. I am unsure if they do reservations. It wouldn't be surprising if they did. Their menu options and pricing were reasonable.

I had a Cuban Medianoche sandwich that was served on absolutely excellent bread, with curly fries. (Before you think it's weird for me to rave about the ROLL, where we live in central PA, there is no good bread. Just saying!) I also had to get an order of tostones because I love them so much. Enough blossoms were out to provide me with a whole bunch of ideas for art projects. On this particular day they had a few food carts at the Clay Picnic Pavilion, accompanied by some very loud music that you might not expect in a bucolic setting. Even though we were starving, the lines were so long at each of the food carts that we decided to look elsewhere for nourishment. We ended up at the rather swanky Hudson Garden Grill in the NYBG. You probably should make reservations, which we had not done. But since it was past five and getting close to the 6pm closing time, we were still able to get seated. Service started out adequate but then slipped badly towards the end of our meal. Our server indicated that the menu would be changing the next week, which is unfortunate, because the corn fritters we had are no longer on the menu. These fritters were the bomb! We shoulda gotten a second round. Perhaps the zucchini chips that are now on the menu are as good. I had the Caeser salad with chicken. It was fine. The chicken was not mixed in or topped on top of the salad, but served to the side. JP ordered the Hudson (cheese) burger with fries. Both the burger and the fries tasted good, but that Brioche bun collapsed and fell apart in poor JP's hands. But you should expect that with the Brioche bun, to which just about every restaurant these days has a slavish devotion.

You cannot order a fresh carafe or pitcher of sangria with the fruit in it here, which is what I was expecting from a place headlining sangria. So your experience of the Sangria Cafe for sangria will come down to whether you like yours fortified. I like my sangria freshly made to order with just the wine and chopped fruit, but you may have a better experience at Sangria Cafe if you prefer fortified sangria. So the Manager, Elios, was superb. He told me he would let me taste the red, white and lychee versions to see which one I preferred. Given they are all fortified to an extent, I chose to order margaritas. I prefer mezcal margaritas, but they did not have mezcal at the time. So I went with the tequila classic. It was good and I had it to go for my evening at a cigar lounge. I also ordered food to go: the French cut pork chops with garlic mashed potatoes and asparagus and the braised beef short rib with small potatoes and broccoli. Here's a twist: the food was better than the adult beverage at a place emphasizing the latter. At all times, my server, Hector, was superb in his own right. Service is probably the strong suit at Sangria Cafe, followed by the food. The French cut pork chops taste like they have been marinated or at least brined. You will eat these down to the bone and you will pick up those bones to clean them. The garlic mashed potatoes were great too, but the asparagus was a bit overcooked. On balance, this $30 dish was satisfying and would have been better had they included a little gravy on the side for the mashed potatoes. The beef short rib at $38 was even tastier. I appreciate the chef took the time to get a good cut of short rib and trimmed the excess fat down to a leaner cut. The meat is inherently marbled with fat, so the flavor is already going to be as present as the savory tenderness. If you dine at a restaurant where there is excess fat on the beef short rib, know the chef there is not putting in the work to trim all that fat. Coudos to the chefs in the Sangria Cafe kitchen for their trimming work. This is even better than the pork chops and you'll savor every bite. The broccoli was overcooked here, so the chefs could restrain themselves on the cooking time for the veggies. The small potatoes were perfect and what is not to like about marbled beef and potatoes. Here they have a little gravy with cooked onions to add to the savory pleasure. The Sangria Cafe is a great place to come with friends. This place will see lots of action as the weather warms. The atmosphere is upbeat and the music is in full swing. This is a Latino and Afro Latino crowd. The kitchen and service are very good here. Perhaps I'm in the minority preferring nonfortified sangria, but I wish that were an option with the chopped fruit in it. Perhaps the majority prefers the fortified hit, but it would be nice to have it more relaxed with just the wine as summer approaches or at any time of the year. Please keep the mezcal in stock as SOP for the mezcal margs. Thanks to Elios, Hector and the chefs in the kitchen. 3.5 stars.
