Excellent restaurant and worth a visit. The atmosphere is very cozy and some of the seating can be a bit tight. Lighting is dim and warm. Service was friendly and food arrived promptly after ordering. Probably one of the better clam chowders in the New England area in my opinion. Similar flavors to what one might find at the Sail Loft in Boston, but with more clams in the soup and less potatoes, which is a big plus. Clam Chowder - Excellent clam chowder, not overly watery or thick. Good consistency with plenty of clams in the soup. Clean and delicious. Definitely worth an order. Tavern Burger - Solid burger cooked medium. Bacon was thick cut and toppings in the burgers were all fresh. Tastes of a backyard grill on the meat which was awesome and added to the flavor profile. Corned Beef Reuben - Amazing corned beef sandwich with delicious slaw. Bread was not overly toasted or thick. Plenty of meat in the sandwich. Overall an amazing entree. Fries that come with this meal are properly cooked and seasoned. Cod Wrap - This was a delicious wrap with a reasonable portion of cod and slaw. Wrap wasn't in any way dry and had plenty of "juice" from the fish and slaw. Overall, this was a good experience. All the food was great. Staff is friendly and attentive. It was a good enough experience that we stopped by a second night, unfortunately, it seems they experienced some shortages because they had run out of the chicken pot pie and corned beef reuben on the second night, which happened to be what I wanted to order. The Black Pearl is a great spot on Bannister's Wharf for a meal or a cocktail. They have a large outdoor patio perfect for alfresco dining. The staff was quick and nice. My husband and I decided to split a few appetizers so we got the crab cakes, fries, Caesar salad, and clam chowder. We were visiting from out of state and chose The Black Pearl based on reviews, but overall it was disappointing. When we walked in, we paused for a quick photo near the bar while waiting for our table. The bar area was empty, and my son hadn't even sat down, but we were immediately and sharply told he couldn't be there. I understand policies, but the tone felt unnecessary and unwelcoming, especially given the situation (out of state travelers wanting a quick picture in an isolated part of the bar right next to where we were waiting for our table). The bigger issue, though, was the food. It was overpriced and underwhelming. I ordered the chopped salad with chicken--it was a very small portion with minimal ingredients, and the chicken, while clearly good quality, was completely unseasoned. It had no flavor at all. The Brussels sprouts were also bland and needed salt, and the fries were soggy and lacked seasoning. The chicken tenders were the only item that were well-prepared. To their credit, the ingredients seemed fresh, the server was very nice, and the ambiance is cute. However, the lack of seasoning and overall value made the experience disappointing. Supposedly the clam chowder is one of the best in town. Nope. It was thin and in my bowl, there was 1 measly little cut potato piece. My friend didn't have any potatoes. Also, the clams were chopped very fine. For $8, we had a very small, individual size challah loaf that arrived cold. I prefer my bread warmed, but cold challah could be your jam. The old-fashioned was excellent but my friend didn't like the clove/spicy taste. The cod was average. Our waitress was lovely and provided good service. Good spot overall. Definitely came for the outdoor patio, as it's in a prime location and is covered in case of inclement weather! I got the challah bread to start, pictured here, which was to die for. So light and fluffy, cooked to perfection, and buttery smooth as well. Melted in my mouth and I could have eaten four or five of these bad boys! Also got a Caesar salad with grilled shrimp - thankfully there were four shrimp but the salad portion was smaller than expected, for what the salad cost, I expected more than a side salad portion of lettuce. Let me just say that this was a trip back in time. Many years ago, my spouse was a poor struggling student in Providence, Rhode Island, and discovered the Black Pearl's clam chowder. When I made a trip back to the area about 20 years ago, I had to stop and see what the talk was about. I make darn good clam chowder, but their clam chowder was excellent. So recently we decided for nostalgia's sake we would try it one more time and the chowder was exceptional, thick but not claggy, creamy, full of clams, nicely salty and a boost of dill. We chose to sit outside on a beautiful fall day. Service was slow. We also tried a lobster salad on croissant. The croissant was stale and the lobster needed flavor. If I were back in the area, I would 100% stop for the chowder, but would probably look elsewhere for other food options. read more

Came here off of a recommendation from a friend. We got the Garlic Parmesan Frites, Spinach Artichoke Dip, and Crab Cake as apps. The aioli that came with the fries was delicious and so was the crab cake (though it was a little pricier). I tried the Mussels Black Pearl and was decently surprised! The butter/broth was delicious with the mussels and the bread and the mussels tasted fresh, not fishy at all. Our server was very nice and attentive, always checked up on us. I really enjoyed my stop into this restaurant this past summer. The ambiance is very quant, romantic and sensual. I had a bacon cheeseburger (not a huge seafood fan) and the burger was not very good. Visiting Newport? This is the quintessential wharf spot- but the service has much to be desired. However, the food is fairly priced and freshly prepared based on our party's experience. We made reservations for the Annex to eat outdoors on a beautiful July evening. We were seated early, but service from there was not as pleasant. Our party included a friend with serious food allergies and our server was short with us on our questions. We ordered drinks and an appetizer for the table- our server alluded to forgetting to send the app in while passing. When we asked to add something to the order she informed the table that she was "kinda busy" and when checking in or delivering items, she walked and talked in passing rather than being attentive. We, unfortunately, were made to feel that we were a bother rather than guests. The food was fine- the highlights: spinach and artichoke appetizer had a lovely bread to dip with, cocktails were tasty, and two of us got the lobster salad croissant and it was very tasty. Everyone has tough nights, but when there are so many options along the wharfs and in town, customer service is what elevates the dining experience in the high season. The restaurant is located on a busy wharf with a patio that is perfect on a nice summer day. The restaurant doesn't take reservations and it's first come, first serve. Depending on the time, you may not need to wait long. The food here is pretty good and decently priced for the location. The lobster salad sandwich uses a buttery croissant as the buns. It is dressed in light mayo and had a good amount of lobster for the size of the croissant. Market price for lunch was $36, a little pricey for what it is. A few things the restaurant lack: 1. Food is overpriced. 36 bucks for steak but it was actually just a few slices of beef. 2. Most importantly, food is not good. We ordered steak - medium well and it was served as well done to say the least, if not overcooked. They were charred, bitter, hard to bite on. We got a free dessert because of that. The best thing about this place is the clam chowder. Service - privileged young men who need to work on their waiter skills. Silverware was removed from the table after appetizers, and never replaced. Dirty dishes remained on the table for extended period of time, making dinner uncomfortable. The maiter d also needs an attitude adjustment as was very stand offish when we arrived, and waited to be seated. Prices do not justify the quality of the food (again except for the clam chowder). Do not order the cheese charcuterie board- overpriced and underwhelming! Muscles appetizer was lacking in flavour. Grilled Shrimp on the caesar salad did not taste fresh. I expected the lobster roll to be better than at Stew Leonards for the price they charge for it ($38!)- and it was not. The food here was pretty standard. I found the Clam Chowder to be watery and lacking in taste. The Lobster Salad on a Croissant dish was really good! I would actually get this one again (just keep in mind, it's very different from a traditional lobster roll). Lastly, the Tavern burger was definitely the stand out dish.
