Anthony's Seafood offers a good amount of seafood (duh!). So you place your order at a counter then you're given a number and your food will be brought to you. I went on a rainy Monday around noon and there was still a steady flow of customers. It seems to be a pretty popular spot. The staff is all very friendly. The soups were served to us immediately after paying. The New England Clam Chowder was good. Nice amount of clams and very creamy. I had never had Rhode Island Clam Chowder before and this seemed like the place to try it. The clear broth was surprisingly flavorful but I still prefer New England. My girlfriend and I ordered a good amount and the food came out pretty quickly. My favorite was the kung pao calamari. The squid was fried perfectly and having the sauce on the side was nice as it didn't leave the breading to get all soggy and I had control over how sweet it would be. The stuffed Quahogs tasted good but I feel like I tasted more of the stuffing over the actual shellfish. It still tasted good, but I feel like I should've gotten more shellfish. We were told they ran out of shells to serve them on so the presentation was off, but they were still tasty. The lobster rolls were both good. They were $27 which seems pretty steep to me but they were actually on the cheaper side compared to other places we saw around Newport. The lobster tasted fresh and the bread was good. They were solid lobster rolls. The food was all solid, but for the price I wasn't wowed.
Returned today, after the last time being 12 years ago, i.e., around 2014 being the last time being in the area. See previous review from 12 years ago--which was glowing! Must say, things are a bit "neat" and protocol/rule based and that is not entirely in a positive way. It's more like a cafeteria with strict rules rather than a family friendly restaurant. Must order before being seated, forks are handed to you in a prepackaged sets based on the number of parties, no reserving seats, some tables are specified for parties of 4 or 5 members, etc. Unsure. But it seemed more like a strict military protocol rather than somewhere to just come in and enjoy the fresh seafood! Saw one customer, party of two, being told to move to the other table since they have only two people. It's like, those seats would not even be filled up during their time there. Understand the strict rules, but some flexibilities might make sense in such scenario... rather than following the strict protocol, don't you think? Two sets of automatic paper towels roller in each of the male and female restroom. Now, that was a good thing, and presumably to ensure customers would always have one ready when the other is broken or runs out. But that's a bit anal.
Our favorite restaurant from this trip!! The Portuguese clam chowder was a standout and the seafood Nantucket was perfectly cooked and flavorful. Food came out pretty quick. It's pretty casual with indoor and outdoor seating.
Generous succulent pieces of lobster!!! Well worth the price. Spicy Quahog clam was great. We came over from Newport to avoid high lobster prices- didn't disappoint! Service is at a counter, but the girl was friendly! Cute outdoor seating.
Do not walk, RUN here for their lobster roll. You won't be disappointed. Service is fast and efficient. I had not been here in 9 years, and that was way too long between visits. It gets busy, rightfully so, but it is more locals and fewer tourists than everywhere else I think. I am already drooling, trying to figure out when I am going to get here again.
Cute seafood shack/restaurant. They have fresh fish available in the front end of the restaurant. I really wanted to love this place however I felt it was overpriced for the quality/portions. The clam cakes were 99% dough hardly any clam and I thought it lacked flavor. Though I did enjoy the oysters and shrimp cocktail. Because I ordered takeoutfrom the restaurant instead of the fish shop they charged me the restaurant price for the shrimp cocktail and took it from the fridge of the fish shop. The portion really wasn't worth the price. Overall it was okay.
We really enjoyed this little place! It was recommended to us by a local so we thought to give it a shot! It was the cheapest lobster rolls we could find but they did NOT disappoint! The lobster was so tender and butter soft! I could easily eat 5 of them! The service was great, and the ambiance was very cozy and inviting! I would def recommend someone to try it when visiting !
First time trying Rhode Island clam chowder and it surprised me that there's more flavor but it lacked the actual ingredient, clams. There were more potatoes in there. New England clam chowder was juat okay, lack of clams and you taste more cream than clam flavors. The fish and chip large size are two pieces of fish. Lightly battered and it needs a bit more seasoning or salt. The lobster roll is just okay - Small pieces of lobster. The clam baked was mostly breading and barely any clams. It tasted like bread more than anything. The crab cake was only one small piece snd it was mostly fillers than actual pieces of crabs.
A local institution. This place goes seafood really well with generous portions. Simple set up order at the counter and you'll be directed where to sit. Food comes out pretty quick.
My husband and I stopped here on the way home from the beach. We got takeout. It was really good and I love the fact that they have like a little side area that have like pre-prepared foods that you can purchase cute little stop.
Anthony's Seafood offers the best value for seafood in the Newport area. This casual, order-at-the-counter spot delivers friendly service and an excellent selection of starters, sandwiches, raw bar items, and fried seafood. We especially enjoyed the New England clam chowder and the Portuguese fish chowder. Both were served hot, full of flavor, and generously portioned for the price. Highly recommend!
Mrs. K. and I stopped here for dinner on Monday night and had a pleasant time. Queue up to order at the counter and then pick a seat, food is brought to you with little fanfare. We had... . Lobster roll. It was excellent with a nicely toasted bun, loaded with lobster meat and very little celery, onion or mayo. This was the highlight of the meal and is the "get this" from our dinner. . Baked scallops. Tasty and cooked properly though the breadcrumbs were too much. Great portion of scallops though. . New England clam chowder. This was the "Meh" and I'm sorry I got a bowl here. It was almost watery or milky rather than creamy. Heavy on potatoes and very light on clams. I spooned through it and could not find any clams. There was a bit of clam flavor. We abandoned it after a few tries. Sad and wasted. . The fries with the lobster roll were not at all special. Skip those. . The roasted potatoes were excellent. Cooked well, flavorful and fluffy. . I've been craving corn on the cob for days (subtle advertising driving past corn fields the last two days?) and this was perfect. Lightly cooked and leaning towards firm/crunchy. Yum! Overall, a good meal but that clam chowder let them down. Four stars here. [Review 950 of 2025 - 81 in Rhode Island - 24505 overall]
Very cool old school fish market. Amazing selection of oysters ! The service was good and smooth , you order at front desk then they deliver your food to where ever you choose to sit. Clam strips were great and the prices are very fair . Believe clam strips and Diet Coke was about 16$ .

After spending a quick getaway in Providence Rhode Island, I did a search for Diners, Drive Ins and Dives and my search lead me to Anthony's Seafood. I just want a quick lunch, no reason to have tablecloths and white glove service. I want a local seafood shack without the dress-up dining. Anthony's Seafood has picnic tables outside as well seating inside. My wife and I walk and see to the left is a seafood market. To the right, the cashier is ready to take your order. Once you place your order and pay for your meal, the wait staff will bring your order to your table. Sounds easy right? I see the Guy Fieri poster, what he ordered was Kung Pao Calamari. My wife isn't eating that dish?! I ordered two Rhode Island Chowders and a Clam Belly Platter platter for my main entree. Anthony's Seafood is serving fresh clams all day long! We both loved the chowder and the whole belly fried clams were cooked to perfection. After we finished our meals, we jumped in the car and headed back to Port Jeff to catch the ferry. If you're heading to Rhode Island, put in the Nav Middletown, RI and find Anthony's Seafood. Freshly caught seafood in a casual setting. read more

Seafood heaven is how I will sum up this place in two words. Just rolled into town and wanted some fresh seafood and this looked like a good find. It is a seafood store that also serves cooked fresh seafood. Does it get any better than this? You walk up to the register and order. They will bring the food to you and bus your table: fairly straight forward. Onto the food: 1) Hot lobster roll. this was loaded with hot butter lobster on a nicely toasted bun. So good. The fries are also cooked perfectly: hot and crispy on the outside and soft on the inside and it was not greasy. 2) Cold lobster roll. Again, this was loaded with big chunks of meat Not overly dressed, but just enough. Of the hot and cold variety, I always like a cold lobster salad roll. 3) Portuguese seafood chowder was sooooo good. Probably one of the best chowders I have had in years and easily in the top 5. Big chunks of seafood and slight kick to it. I wish they bottled that soup up for sale. 4) Clam cakes. these were ok. More like a fritter, but you put on Rhed's hot sauce and it kicks it up another notch. 5) Stuffed Quahog - like a seafood thanksgiving stuffing stuffed into clamshell and baked. I liked it a lot, but then again, I like stuffing. If I had more time, I would easily have another meal here. If you are looking for really good seafood in a relaxing non-pretentious atmosphere, this is the place to be at. read more

Nothing was wrong with Anthony's Seafood! Loved the relaxing neighborhood feel, very down to earth fish market / restaurant. Eating there was a pleasure. You get in line grab your drink and order your lunch with the cashier. Pay before you eat, a beautiful idea that makes eating more enjoyable. Ordered salmon sandwich with sweet potato fires. And I had a cup of New England Clam Chowder, with a small order of clams with bellies & fries. Our drinks were regular bottles of apple juice and a local bottle of iced tea. Took our tray of chowder and utensils with napkins and our order number to a seat of our choice. There is a beautiful sun filled veranda but we chose a cozy booth. The chowder was creamy and full of potatoes and plenty of clams. Crackers soaked up the remaining broth! Clams were crispy and tasty. Fries were a bit salty and overdone but I ate them anyway! Nothing was wrong with the salmon sandwich with a side of pesto sauce. Nice homely atmosphere and attentive enough service. A spot that every local must know about! read more
Went there on my brother's recommendation and it did not disappoint. I loved the Portuguese chowder. So tasty. The New England clam chowder was ok but the Portuguese was delicious. We shared a fisherman platter and it was enough food for the two of us with leftovers. The scallops were spot on. Everything was good. It's a small place with indoor And outdoor seating. You order at the counter and go sit down. Very soon they bring you the feast. Cute no frills spot with solid seafood. You exit through the seafood store and it's hard to resist. Definitely a thumbs up read more

I like to eat at seafood markets that having dining cause I know the seafood is fresh. Anthony did not disappoint. Get the clam chowder. Both the creamy style and the RI style with clear broth were delightful. Family shared the fried fisherman platter which had scallops, shrimp, whole belly clams and cod. I had the lobster roll which was on the small side but it had large chunks of buttery lobster. Super casual place where you order at the counter and they bring the food to you. read more

Yummy seafood! Enjoyed this casual spot with some friends, even had a place to buy fresh seafood if you're looking to cook. Great service (had kids coloring pages too), very family friendly vibes. Tried the fish and chips (great and tender) and the calamari (nice), both on par with what I'd expect from a seafood shack. Great meal! read more

When I had a guest visiting Newport for the first time, one of her top requests was to try a classic New England lobster roll. Without hesitation, I brought her to Anthony's Seafood in Middletown. When she asked why I chose it, my answer was simple: "Because they're the best." Having been to Anthony's several times, I knew exactly what to expect; fresh, perfectly prepared seafood in a casual, no-frills setting that lets the food speak for itself. We ordered the lobster roll with crispy fries and added a "spicy stuffie" on the side, which turned out to be the perfect introduction to the region's culinary staples. The lobster was fresh and generous, lightly dressed to let the flavor shine, and the stuffie had just the right kick. If you're visiting Newport or Middletown and are looking for authentic, high-quality seafood, take the short trip off the beaten path to Anthony's. It's a local gem that never disappoints. read more
Service was quick! The tables were clean. Food was delicious! If you're in the area and need a quick stop for lunch, definitely come here. The calamari was my favorite from the platter. We also ordered the regular clam chowder and spicy clam chowder. I enjoyed the flavors of the spicy clam chowder the best! read more
Forewarning: the following is not so much a review as it is a nostalgic reverie of a former Middletown RI resident. I really like the fact that Anthony's is located in Middletown. The location doesn't have the cache of blue-blooded Newport. Cliff Walk, Ocean Drive, Thames Street, the mansions and their ostentation...all the crowds made it a nightmare during the summertime. Middletown is a more working class town, more approachable. The same can be said about Anthony's. Sure, they'll handle the overflow of tourists from Newport during the summer time. They've even decorated the space with used buoys and nautical gear but they haven't hired a pedigreed chef to make it all fancy. At heart, it is still a seafood shop and restaurant. The prepared offerings are an evolution of timeless regional classics. By regional classics, I mean Rhode Island recipes. Take their Rhode Island clam chowder as an example. It's a clear, seasoned seafood broth with chunks of clam meat and diced potatoes - straightforward, honest. The "classic calamari" also has a RI twist - fried slices of cherry peppers are interspersed with the crispy fried squid. The usual seafood dishes are offered and you can order them any style you like as long as it's baked, boiled, raw, or fried. There are more options, even a seafood hamburger, made with beef raised by the seashore...I'm kidding. Anyway, Anthony's caters to both tourists and locals alike. Try it out. read more

I guess I will be the odd one out and say this place was not great. When I go to a sea food market, I'd hope for more "non-fried" options. We ended up with Lobster Roll and Cod The Cod was not great. We loved the lobster roll, but the pile of fries are bigger than the roll, so it's a $30 pile of fries? I'd have given 4 stars if I just went for lobster roll, but the rest was mediocre. There is no ambiance and the staff was all with a blank face and done with the day. Not a bad dinner, not a bad place, but not worth $100 for 2 adults and 1 child. I'm surprised we were recommended this and the reviews are so high. read more

Nice, clean, lots of nautical theme decor. We ordered steamers, fried scallops, fried whole belly clams, fried flounder and RI clam chowder. Also some raw Barnstable oysters and clams. Really enjoyed the fried scallops and whole belly clams. Chowder wasn't our favorite. Same with the fried flounder. Since 3 of our orders came with fries, they allowed us to swap out some of the fries for rice pilaf and mashed potatoes which were both very good. For a place where you order at the counter, the service was really good. Food was brought to our table when ready, empty dishes were wisked away quickly and tables were tidy. We will definitely be back! read more

My friend and I were on the hunt for good seafood in the area and the local stationery shop recommended Anthony's along with a few others. Anthony's did not disappoint! I got the lobster roll with fries and the Portuguese chowder. Both were very good, very filling. The lobster roll was a bit pricey but I decided to splurge since I was on vacation and I never get these kinds of things. Service was great too, staff was friendly. Looks like they also sell fresh fish too so if I was a resident near by, I'd probably come here to get fresh seafood. I'd also try other things on the menu, I do love me a good order of fish and chips! read more

Rhode Island chowder is the best--so satisfying. Yummy clam cakes. Grilled swordfish salad was light and tasty--the fish is simply grilled and has a hint of smoke flavor. I would have enjoyed the salad a little more if I had realized that salad dressing is in packets on the counter not far from the register (saw afterwards). Husband had a fried cod sandwich, was served with a nice amount of lettuce and tomato, French fries were decent and even better with malt vinegar. Very comfortable booths. I could eat here a few times a month if I was a local. read more

For the fish and chips, is the fish beer battered?
I can't remember - but it's the best fish and chips I've had in RI.
Does Anthonys deliver traditional clambake for 6 ppl to middletown?
Anthony's does not deliver, but if you order the ingredients for the clambake through the retail market, everything can be put together for you!
