I've lived in Cville for about 5 years now, post-grad (not UVA) and in the workforce. I've been frequenting Biltmore since I moved here and love it.Let me break down what you'll find here ...
1) Location - Right in the heart of the UVA campus and The Corner. For those non-locals, The corner is a strip of bars right next to campus. The obvious demographic make up at these bars and restaurants are college students. So if you're expecting world-class high-end food and service, I suggest spending your tons of money for gourmet food elsewhere. If you like a college-town atmosphere, cheap food and drinks, and a fun time, you're in the right place.
2) Atmosphere - Biltmore has 4 "sections" that are all different and all very enjoyable. During Spring/Summer/Fall, you can enjoy outdoor seating on a deck that is completely covered by wisteria vines. It's really cool, shaded from the sun, smells good, looks neat, what's not to like? On the other side of the Bilt, there is now a huge U shaped tiki bar, with a deck, picnic tables, and in front of that, there are cornhole/bags stations you can use for free. Great place to hang out with a large group of people getting drinks. In the winter, they get a tent over everything with heat lamps. They often times get a DJ set up outside for fun music times and dancing. Inside, first floor looks like an old tavern, with a gas fireplace they have on in the winter, and a big TV to watch sports. On the second floor, there is the "dive bar" section that looks like your classic college divebar. So whatever scenery you're looking for, you can probably find it here.
3) Food/Drinks - Let's set expectations again... not a 5-star restaurant. The majority of customers are college students with no money. BUT - for the price ($7-9) you can get huge burgers/sandwiches that taste great, some of the best BBQ I've ever had, awesome ribs, Thumbs/Toes (chicken wings) with some great sauces, and some killer french fries. For the money you're paying, the food is great. Drinks are great as well. Bilt always keeps many of the local brews on tap (Star Hill, Blue Mountain Brewery , Legend, etc), and the prices again are excellent. Others giving a bad rating for having only decent food seriously need to get a grip. Just like movie ratings, I wouldn't judge this place based on over-the-top harsh ratings for food quality that beats the expectation based on price.
4) Survivor Hour - More of a continuation of Food/Drinks, but this is the main reason and time I go. Thursdays from 8-9, Biltmore has Survivor Hour, which is $1 rails. They also have $2 tall boys of PBR (classic) and $1 pinnacle vodka drinks or rail whiskey after. My fiance and I have gone to this every week for over a year now. We get 2 doubles a person (8 drinks total), and dinner for us both UNDER $25. YES - during the spring it can get packed with students, but if you get a table, which I've NEVER waited for, it's no problem, and it's always great to people watch. During Winter and Summer - it's much more vacant if you're looking for a quieter time on the cheap.
5) Service - The staff is incredible. We are there every week, so we know the staff pretty well at this point. They are all wonderful, very accommodating, patient, and kind. The managers walk around to each table to make sure everyone is having a good time.
So if you are really picky and must have gourmet food, first don't come to a college campus bar/restaurant, second get a grip.
If you're looking for a fun and lively atmosphere, decent food at excellent prices, good service right next door to a pretty cool campus, and centrally located around many other bars for hopping. Biltmore is the place. Also for those wondering, there was a change in management around 2011/2012 which marked a decent up-tick in food quality and service. read more
