I'm so sad, man. My wife is a lifelong Virginian who has been to this place many times in the past and spoken so highly of it every time. We even went together probably almost ten years ago and loved it! So we were in the area tonight and decided, of course, to hit up Boylan Heights for dinner, remembering it as fondly as we did. But I ended up...really disappointed by this visit. First of all, it was super busy, very crowded, and very loud - that's kinda to be expected out of a college sports bar though. The servers were all doing their best, and everybody was really nice! But then I ordered one of their pre-mixed drinks from the bar, and had to end up asking after it about 20 minutes later when it hadn't made it to my table. I was told it got lost in the mix of everything, which I do understand because as I mentioned before, it was busy. So I just said that's cool, I don't need it, I'll just have a root beer instead. 10 minutes later and the server comes to the table with lightly-tinted soda water, very apologetically telling me that's what's coming out and they need to change the bag. I'm autistic and overstimulated at this point so I just say no, water is fine. And that was a little ehh, but the food was absolutely the most disappointing part of this experience. I ordered a burger with bacon and cheese and their curly fries on the side...the fries were barely warm, and not a single element of the burger was seasoned. It was offensively bland, and on top of that, the bacon was floppy. Burger was undercooked as well (menu says they're cooked to medium well, it was about medium rare). I took 2 bites and was totally done. It's really a shame because you can tell the quality of the ingredients is good, but the execution was just kind of embarrassing. Like...salt and pepper the meat at least, please, c'mon. The milkshake was pretty good, though. This place is an institution, but I think it's leaning a little too hard on that reputation and has let the quality of its food slip. read more

Had a great dinner here with my niece and my sister during college orientation. The space opened their doors so there was a lot of fresh air. The weather was perfect for it too. They gave us menus and scantron-like menus to circle in the build-your-own burgers & bowls. That was pretty cool. I chose my chicken sandwich and gave it to the waitress. My sister ordered the boozy milkshake and my niece ordered a regular one. They really liked them! My chicken sandwich was so good! I got the curly fries with it and they were super delish too. My sister got loaded tots which were sooo good. I only with they had pickled jalapeño for them instead of fresh. The fresh were just too much (& I love spice). Craving a burger and heard this was a place to go to get your burger on and it did not disappoint! Visited on a Saturday evening after a hike football game and it was busy and loud inside but typical for a college restaurant/bar. There are high top tables by the bar, booth seating on the side and tables and booths up on a platform. There also is seating upstairs. They did not have the scantron sheets available to customize your burger due to it being busy but the regular menu is good as well. I ordered the all-American and added raw onion and pickle with the curly fries! Big burger and a very generous portion of the fries. All were excellent! Husband for the burger that included egg, avocado, bacon and spicy he loved it as well! He got his with tater tots and also had a generous portion. Server was attentive and sweet! Great spot on a nice day! We loved the cavalier crush drink. I enjoyed the chicken Caesar quinoa bowl also. The only issue (which is kinda funny) is watching these young girl bartenders spilling and wasting SO MUCH BEER. Maybe the owner should hold a training on how to pour a beer which does not include letting the tap run for 3 seconds before putting the glass underneath lol. This is a solid burger joint! The staff were quick and very friendly, and the burgers were really good! My only complaint was that the burgers were a little messy and the burger patty slipped and slid around the bun a bit. Otherwise, the fries and burger were really good! Their burgers have always been a fan favorite especially when paired with their cheesy tots and milkshakes! The restaurant is also the one with the coolest aesthetic on UVA's corner with dope decorations, lighting, and ambiance. You even order your food on a scantron! They used to have the BEST QUINOA PATTY that was perfect for me as a vegetarian. Although the new patty isn't the same (pre-2019), Boylan's veggie burger still hits the spot. Get the Wahoo! Boylan isn't my favorite late-night bar on the corner, but it's a decent sports bar to hang out and grab a casual drink and bite with fiends. The Wahoo is awesome and is a must-get when here. The After School Special House ACC sauce is tasty, and has a nice sweet and savory flavor. Food: i chugged the cookies and cream bailey's alcoholic milkshake. It was so good and i was super hungry. I ordered a double shot and I didn't feel anything/taste the alcohol. If I knew that would be the case, I would just order a regular milkshake. The wings were the best wings I've had in a long time. They were big and juicy. I got Buffalo wings just to play it safe since that flavor is hard to mess up. They also have dry rub and their signature spicy bbq flavor. I was full and happy and would stop there again if i was in town. Service: my only complaint is my table of 4 asked for things to come in a certain order. We wanted the appetizer (nachos and fries) to come before the meals since we were hungry and wanted to snack a bit. Since the staff brought everything out at once my friends didn't have the energy to finish their burgers. They serve large portions so it helps to get it in parts instead of all at once. The car is pretty large. There is an outdoor patio and an upstairs area but we stayed in the main atrium near the main bar. They didn't have any food outside of chips and salsa available that night, so we just got drinks. The signature cocktails on tap weren't too bad. Stopped here for "lupper" (about 2:30-3pm) with my sister and her family during a visit to Charlottesville/UVA. Not much special about this place. You can either order from a small menu or build your sandwich on a checklist that you fill out at the table. My niece works there, and knows all of the staff so we received pretty good service. Although that didn't prevent my brother-in-law from receiving his burger 10 minutes after all of our other sandwiches arrived. First, we ordered nachos and mozzarella sticks as appetizers. I didn't have any nachos but the mozzarella sticks were just the 'from the freezer to the frier' variety. Entree-wise, my sister and I had grilled chicken sandwiches (which aren't on the menu but are available on the checklist if you build your own - yes, that was odd to me too!) and everyone else had a burger. (I had a burger the previous day so I wasn't in the mood for another one.) With that said; my grilled chicken sandwich was rather bland - if I didn't get bacon and Mayo on it then it would have been pretty flavorless. Everyone else liked their burgers so that's probably the better route to take when ordering. Again, the fries were your garden variety freezer to frier curly fries - nothing you can't have at home from the grocery store. Overall, the service and food was 'meh.' I wouldn't "not got here" if someone wanted to go, but I wouldn't purposefully go here either. This definitely seems like a college-kid "I have a hangover" type of place. read more

I got the Third Year, which featured mushrooms, swiss cheese, bacon, lettuce, and a garlic aioli. The flavors melded well together, but the burger itself was a little well done and greasy for my taste. Additionally, the mushrooms were the dominant flavor of the burger: they weren't really caramelized so they were a bit tough. The fries (which are included) were absolutely delicious. They were salty and a little spicy, and very crispy. The portions were giant, so it's a great meal before a night out on the Corner. The service was exceptional and the waitress was super friendly. Boylan Heights! It's been too long. It's been a few years since I've stepped into Boylan Heights but it doesn't seem to have changed at all - which is a great thing. My most recent reason for coming to Charlottesville was for a wedding (Congrats Anahi and Ramzi, btw) and there was a brunch the following Sunday morning for everyone to meet, eat, and give their farewells. We had a couple of corners all to ourselves just up the stairs where we all congregated. I'm not sure if we got there before everyone else or if it was reserved, but it was a clutch spot. We had a few servers helping us and there were TV's EVERYWHERE so everything was all good. This is my first time eating here, hence the updated review. I had heard about the burger situation there and was excited to try one. It did not disappoint at ALL. I ended up building my own burger - one patty, sriracha mayo, jalapenos, fried egg, vidalia onions, and cheddar - and it crushed my expectations. THe burger was juicy AF and SEASONED AF. The seasoning was the biggest part for me. A lot of times if you put a bunch of stuff on a burger, the meat gets neglected. This patty did not and it was delicious. The curly fries definitely had finishing salt and felt like each one received individual attention. Damn good. Unsung heroes - definitely the three servers we had running in circles for about an hour and a half. They did a hell of a job. Underrated fact - they serve Mr. Pibb. I don't know what else you want. Burger based sports bar that doesn't disappoint. Everything can be customized so it's really up to you on what to get. Overall as far service goes it's varies. During the day is great. During night when it's packed things get a bit slow. General sports bar atmosphere. Games are on and most the time time you can request a certain game on a tv unless it's a major event obviously. Boylan Heights isn't a tourist trap but it's also not Micky D's. Boylan Heights has all of the feel of a college bar--because it is. Back to the basics of burgers. The patty has a very strong taste that is something other than just beef. You can design your burger on a scantron and pencil (which is a plus). I ordered a double patty (Mistake 1). The burger had a very exotic taste that I did not appreciate or accept. It was beefy enough for the pound at any rate. I ordered the tots (rather than the fries). Mistake 2. Mistake 2.5: I ordered the tots loaded (see picture). The ranch, chives, and bacon all melded together into just another fast-food abomination. Don't get me wrong, the burger was tasty but just not as tasty as a classic and well prepped whopper or double quarter pounder. If you come here, order the fries (not the tots) and do not order an extra patty of beef on your burger. The opportunity to people-watch in an undergrad environment will always be worth the prices that this place imposes. The staff are very friendly. read more

Came mid-afternoon with a group to let loose with some beers and snacks. Nachos are pretty good. Didn't have any burgers but they LOOK good. Fries are not so great. Mozzarella sticks are ok. Kind of overpriced though. A pitcher of Bud was $8. I don't know if it was because we were the only people in there on a Thursday early afternoon, but the guy serving/bartending for us was super nice and even gave us half-priced pitchers since we bought so many and was there for so long. Unfortunately we didn't order a burger we were there for brunch.It was slightly limited for brunch a few burger options for lunch and a few breakfast options.Our waitress didn't seem very knowledgable about the menu.It was difficult for her to describe things. I decided on the huevos rancheros which was pulled pork with onions and tomatoes on a flour tortilla topped with cheese sauce,a shiracha cream sauce and fried tortilla strips. This came with Hashbrowns. My friend ordered the Hilary which was an omelet with spinach tomatoes and goat cheese. I can't say this was the most amazing brunch experience.The food was overly cheesy. The Hashbrowns were more like a potato casserole there was no crispy texture to it.The huevos rancheros was covered Ina process nacho cheese sauce which was way too salty.The onions were thick rings not sliced making it difficult to eat. It felt like someone threw together some leftovers and served it to me. My friends omelet the Hilary had too much goat cheese usually this isn't a bad thing but it was literally filled with goat cheese. She also ordered the Hashbrowns and weren't to keen on them either.
