I am like grumpy old man when it comes to pizza. I have my favorite place to eat it, I get the same thing every time, and I am unwilling to try any other pizza place for fear of disappointment. And in most cases when I do try other pizza, I end up bitchin' and moanin' that I should have just gone to my pizza place. The exception being The Big Slice. Had it once at a wedding (very elegant wedding believe it or not) and I have had it 10 times since. It is now a close second in my mind. The crust, sauce and toppings are ample and delicious. Yes its a $25 pizza but you can run laps on it. I buy two and my family can eat on them for a week. Thanks Big Slice for bringing a little something different to Springfield. read more

Couldn't get anybody's attention to get my order. Staff was too busy chatting and stuffing their faces to be concerned with me. Once I got my pizza, took one bite and burnt the roof of my mouth. And while I don't mind a nice nasty piece of greasy pizza, this thing was literally dripping when I lifted it off of the plate. Oh and most importantly, it's not even good. I think the only thing good about the experience was the Blue Moon that chased down the awful experience that I had. I was so so hopeful when I walked in, and left disappointed. Pizza has always been one of those foods that I've thought, "even bad pizza is still pretty good"...but I guess this is the exception, not the rule. I haven't written a Yelp review in a while, but my experience (negative experience) with The Big Slice is worthy of a review. My family and I were visiting Springfield and decided to order pizza. It was Sunday night, around 8:30, so most places in the area were closed. Rather than order from a big chain pizza restaurant, we decided to give a local place a try. The Big Slice was one of the few places open, so we drove to the restaurant and put in an order for a "medium" size pizza to go. About 5 or 6 minutes later, we were told our order was ready, which seemed odd, as most places take at least 10-15 minutes to prep and cook a pizza, but since the place wasn't busy, we thought maybe we just got lucky. The guy who made the pizza said he had "accidentally" made the largest size by mistake, so lucky us, right? Wrong! When we got back to the hotel, we discovered the reason the pizza had only taken 5 minutes to prep and cook was because the guy gave us an OLD, STALE PIZZA that he just added toppings to. And the reason it was the "largest size" (not the medium we had actually ordered) was because that was what they had laying around on the nasty display rack (the rejects no one wants to order). See, at this place, they also sell pizza-by-the-slice, and they have a display with old, stale pizzas. Well, it was late on a Sunday night, and rather than make us a new, fresh pizza (what we actually ordered and over-paid for), the pizza guy decided he would save himself some money and give us one of the old, stale rejects that would likely be thrown out at the end of the night. Not cool. This pizza was nasty. The crust was stale and burnt on the bottom. The cheese was like half-melted rubber, and the pepperoni was cold (because it hadn't been properly cooked). When I called to complain, I was passed around to various people, and finally was transferred to the guy who actually made the pizza, and of course, he denied everything. But he changed his story. Rather than being honest and giving an honest apology, he got defensive and claimed he had "accidently" given us a pizza he made for a delivery order by mistake, an order (he claimed) that was (conveniently) identical to ours (1/2 cheese and 1/2 pepperoni) only a large, instead of a medium. However, when we actually picked up the order, he told us he had MADE a bigger pizza for us by mistake (and played it off like he had done us a huge favor), and he told us all this BEFORE he handed the pizza over. Now, if he "accidentally" gave us the wrong pizza by mistake, why did he tell us about it BEFORE he gave it to us? If his story were actually true (which it isn't), wouldn't it make more sense to just send out the correct pizza for delivery (and not give it to us at all) and then make us a new medium pizza, the pizza we had actually ordered? No, the truth is, as I said before, he charged us $18 for a new, fresh pizza but instead gave us a STALE, NASTY PIZZA that had been sitting around. He tossed on a few pieces of cold pepperoni and popped into the oven and reheated it for 5 minutes. Totally unethical. I would stay far, far away from this place. Either (A) they reheat pizza and charge you for a new, fresh pizza (which is what happened). Or (B) The pizza given to us was actually a fresh pizza, as the pizza guy claims (but we know that's not true), and if that is the case, then the "fresh" pizza at The Big Slice is just straight-up nasty and tastes stale and reheated. read more

Just move back from Connecticut and was researching local pizza places that might meet that east coast quality. I ordered a couple different pizzas for take out and was told it would be ready in 20 minutes. I arrived after about a half hour because of rush hour traffic and ended up waiting another ten minutes, the place was very bright and clean. We've been for lunch a couple times and thought the pizza was great. My wife did point out how unprofessional the staff were by having conversations loud enough for everyone to hear. Then we ordered a few pizzas to bring home to the family this last time. The pizza was garbage. My wife and I both agreed it tasted like dog food. Too much sauce and the cheese and pepperoni tasted awful. Our truthful comparison was dog food. I was curious if they changed ingredients and whether it was temporary. So I called and asked to speak to a manager. They said the manager was busy and took my number so they could call back. A week later they still haven't called. We won't be going here again. My sister went here simply to get a slice of pizza. She has Addison's Disease, which is recognized as a physical disability. Because of this, she has a service dog who can sense when she is entering an adrenal crisis. The man in charge of the restaurant at the time illegally ordered her out of the restaurant for bringing her service dog into the restaurant. The woman working the counter attempted to physically force her out of the restaurant for the same reason. Whether you have a good product or not is irrelevant. Treating people with basic human dignity is just as important as making a great product. Big Slice not only treats people poorly, they break the law by asking disabled people to leave based on their disability. I will never go to Big Slice again. read more

Sad, pathetic story to illustrate my true life of gluttony (note: this was for a group of people, so it was a cackle of gluttons, thank you). Me (having had a delicious pepperoni pizza and pepperoni rolls from The Big Slice previously): "Hi, I'd like to place an order. I need an 18 inch bacon and onion pizza and 3 orders of pepperoni rolls." The Big Slice: "I'm so sorry, but we're almost out of pepperoni, so we can't do the rolls." The Boyfriend: "Why don't we order some pepperoni rolls from pizza hut and the pizza from Big Slice." And then I acquiesced to this disgusting yet brilliant decision. Long story short: the pizza rolls ordered were $1 less than the pizza ordered, and the pizza was waaaaay better. Although I was totally upset that The Big Slice didn't have enough pepperoni to satiate my crew with pepperoni rolls, the Big Slice still delivered totally delicious pizza. For the first time since I moved here from Chicago, I thought to myself, "Finally, enjoyable pizza." Thank you, Big Slice to filling a giant "I need good pizza" hole. Really, thank you. I've been going to the big slice for a few years now but what i just ordered was sad. got 2 cal-zones and there were so small they fit into one box. much smaller then they usually be. and i got extra mushrooms, not only was it not extra, but they tasted like they were canned. the big slice use to be much better but i guess they have decided to cut corners. i will have to find a new pizza place. very disappointing read more

This place has hands down the WORST customer service you will ever experience! My daughter and I have tried this place now for the 3rd time and tonight was our last. First when we came in they weren't busy at all. When we walked up to the counter the young woman at the register rolled her eyes at us when we asked what there was to choose from, since there is no menu on the wall. The woman wasn't even the slightest bit friendly at all, and in our 2 minute interaction she called me sweetie and honey about 8 times !! Very condescending and rude. My daughter has grease literally dripping off her pizza, sitting in a pool on top. I think she used about 6 napkins to soak up the grease! The very first time we came here the pizza was good and the service was pretty good. The 2nd time, the guy brought us our charred black burnt pizza which when we asked him to replace he acted irritated and then reluctantly replaced. This time, I decided I would not be coming back here again. As my daughter and I were eating in the dining room, another young woman employee with dark hair was cleaning the dining room and just pretty much glared at me several times for no reason. My boyfriend and I are new to Springfield and we have been on a quest to try local favorites. Tonight, we tried The Big Slice because it received pretty good reviews. We ordered the Burt Reynolds pizza and buffalo wings. The employee that took my order was friendly and the service was good, but the pizza and wings were terrible. The pizza was slightly burnt and tough to chew and the wings tasted like the ones that you can buy from the freezer section at a grocery store. A prime example of a small restaurant doing everything right. They bring NY style pizza to Springfield. Quite refreshing since most of the local pizza offerings here are St. Louis style. Great sauce and cheese, they also offer a variety of white sauce pizza's, garlic and cinnamon knots. Fresh salads, tasty deserts, but by far my favorite is just a plain slice of cheese pizza. Clean, comfy atmosphere, super friendly staff, been eating here since the day they opened. In fact my dollar bill is framed on the wall to the left of the register. We were their first official customers on opening day. They keep things simple, fresh food served hot and delicious. What more could you ask for, maybe a taco pizza but hey that's just me wishing. They started small and have created a growing group of followers, think they are currently in the works to expand to a bigger space just down the street from their current location. My wife and I had lunch here. I am a fan of New York Style Pizza. Reading other reviews gave me an accurate expectation. I bought a whole pizza but only got the 12". I should have ordered the 18" to get the full NY Pizza experience. The 12" is just not big enough to get a good fold. Next time I will get the 18". The pizza and ingredients were good and fresh. Was brought out to the table very hot and recommend you let it cool a bit before diving in. We got the supreme ruler, and on the 12", I found there to be too many toppings for that thin crust to handle. It was very greasy, but very good. On a side note, I did not care for the garlic knots at all. They were tough on the outside, doughy on the inside, and just covered with raw garlic and herbs (which most of fell off on the plate). OMGosh yummy...reminds me of pizza I used to get years ago!! We bought 2 cheese & 2 mongo slices as well as the garlic knots. Service was fast & friendly! We will definitely go back!!! Since my first visit 8 months ago, I've been back a couple times to get carryout...both times I've called in my orders & was given a waiting time of 30 minutes before picking up. I waited the 30 mins & upon arrival, I still had to wait at least another 15/20 mins. I will say that this place is ALWAYS super busy & I like their pizza, so the extra wait time wasn't a big issue for me plus both times it was 6pm on a Friday evening. Pretty delicious, convenient, and super affordable. My family got take-out tonight and it was under $30 for pizza and salads for four. Not bad! I'll admit, I'm actually not a huge fan of NY style pizza. This is only an issue because my husband is a New Yorker and thinks that any other style of pizza is, well, not pizza. Sigh. As a result, however, I've had way more NY style pizza than I ever wanted and I can say that this place is pretty darn close to the real deal. In fact, the thing that makes this less than totally authentic is the amount of sauce, which I actually prefer. Most NY pizza is way too sparing with the sauce for my taste, but The Big Slice is way more generous. Whew! (I mean, why cut back on the sauce? I've never understood it.) I'm partial to their everything pizza (I forget the name, but it has pepperoni, sausage, onions, mushrooms, and peppers). Yum. The pizza by the slice is a great option, too. I agree with Taylor D., where's the sauce? I got a slice of pepperoni and my friend got the supreme ruler and there was no tomato/marinara/pizza sauce on either. The toppings and crust were ok, just really felt like it was missing something. My slice was super greasy as it consisted of cheese and pepperoni and I get that but when I folded the slice and started eating, the grease pooled in fold, dripped out of either end, down my fingers and hand, and when I threw away my plate there was an orange slick on the table where it had been. My friend said his supreme ruler was ok. The decor is cheap and the food is ok at best, I went to see what the fuss was about and I still just don't get it. First off, holy moly are these pizzas huge!! This was kind of a little taste of home, as my favorite place in Buffalo also does NYC style pizza. They have the crust right, the toppings right, and the sauce right. They also have a great selection of beers, so it's totally reasonable to order one to enjoy while waiting if you order in or place a to go order there...because they kinda don't rock time management, but like I said, perfect timing to drink a beer. There's tv to watch the game, but it's a pretty low key venue and I like to watch Hulu or Netflix when I'm enjoying an 18" pizza with the fam. So yes! I love this place! Who is really going to complain about a gigantic slice of pizza from an 18 inch pie that only costs $2.50? It's so perfect to offer pizza by the slice for those who don't want to commit to an entire pizza. When this place first opened, I never had a disappointing pizza. However, I hate to admit there have been some less than ideal experiences (by this I am saying sometimes I think the slices have been sitting out awhile during busy times and therefore the cheese isn't all greasy and amazing as I prefer). I'm not complaining, because again, it is pizza, but I think the bar was set very high and it is hard to achieve perfect every single day. That being said, even with the disappointments, this is still the only pizza I eat in Springfield and when I'm eating pizza, I am always happy. Overall, pretty good. Depending on the time of day or who is cooking back there, ordering pizza by the slice can be iffy. I've gotten a few where they seem super fresh and great. A couple times, I feel like it was a bad reheat job in a microwave. (They have premade pizzas they sell by the slice and they just add some more toppings and reheat it.)
