Every other place in the area always had a 60 min + wait and when you're hungry the last thing you want is to wait around. It was quick, food was simple, and minimal wait. Is it the best in the area? Probably not. It's your normal burger corner shack. Are they the nicest? Also probably not but it was never expected. The cost wasn't crazy either for a quick bite. The Big Bopper Drive-In was not on our agenda for Christmas day. The nieces really wanted to go to another restaurant. Unfortunately that other restaurant was closed as were the majority of businesses in Solvang that Christmas day. Since Big Bopper was one of the few places in town that was open for business for Christmas, they were packed with customers. Order at the window and find a spot to sit at their outdoor dining area. No indoor seating available. It was about a 30 minute wait for our food to be ready. Well worth that wait!! Usually my wife and I would order differently so we could share. This time, though, we each chose to try the Western Viking Burger. We both agreed that it their Western Viking burger is a pretty damn good one. I can honestly tell you that it is the best burger that I've ever eaten in Solvang. Fries were tasty also. Thank you to the kind staff at Big Bopper Drive-In for working on Christmas Day! This fast food drive-in is right off Mission Drive as you enter the western side of Solvang, and it's worth a visit. The menu is diverse with selections including burgers, sandwiches, burritos, and all the accompanying sides you'd expect. Additionally, they offer shakes and dessert items. We tried their signature tri tip sandwich, which was fantastic! The sandwich roll was fresh (maybe from one of the many local bakeries?) and the meat portion and toppings were generous without any single ingredient overpowering the overall taste. Please note there is also a "California" version of the sandwich for a slightly higher price which includes a few more ingredients and must be equally tasty. We also brought some tri tip taquitos back to our room, but we didn't realize guacamole wasn't included (or the server neglected to pack it) though it was on the menu as a side. They were also good but could have been a real home run with the guac. For those seeking a bit of nostalgia, the physical structure put me in mind of an old A&W drive-up (sans carhops). There is outside shaded seating or the option to eat in your auto if not taking your food "to go." This is a perfect spot to grab a bite if staying in one of the nearby motels and looking for a snack later in the afternoon or evening as Big Bopper's closes later than many of the other restaurants in the area (open until about 8 p.m.). Also, this spot is good if feeding young ones who may not be fans of the local Danish cuisine. Overall, Big Bopper's is another noteworthy dining option when visiting Solvang - especially if staying in one of the nearby motels. When in town consider checking it out. read more

The food was mediocre. But very convenient for the location and very walkable from out hotel. The prices are on the pricey side. I ordered 4 tacos. 2 carne asada and 2 tri tip. The tortillas it came on were some of the driest I've ever had lol. I opted just eating the protein and throwing them out. The carne asada tasted days old while the trip were slightly better. Love the smokiness from the tri tip. The wife had an order of 3 carne asada enchiladas. She said they were decent. She was starving after our long drive to solvang. So she devoured them. The plan was to visit Paula's Pancake House but the 45 minute wait torpedoed the plan. Next the requirement we eat at a place in a one block radius led us to The Big Bopper Drive-In. Looks like they are renting electric mini Jeeps from the parking lot. Place has all your classic drive-in food. I decided to try a cherry shake. I was hoping for some cherry ice cream goodness. Instead the shake was pretty mostly just milk and very sweet with artificial cherry flavor. I drank some water instead. Tri tip taquitos had a crunchy shell and a good amount of tri tip. Sadly there wasn't much flavor from the tri-tip. Wish they had marinated/cooked it with Santa Maria style seasoning. The guy at the register was nice and food came out fast. This nice little outdoor eatery has a good sized menu of quick bites. I had their Tri tip beef sandwich and it was delicious. Meat was good and the baguette with ingredients were fresh. I also sampled one of my brother's Tri tip taquitos which was equally good. Nice variety of other offerings on their menu. My order was prepared quickly, but it was not busy. This eatery is conveniently located next to several of the smaller hotels on Mission Rd. This place saved the day when all other places were either closed after 5pm or costs way too much for what you're getting. I ordered two Asada tacos, one El pastor taco. I'd normally not order tacos at a burger place but the tacos were suggested by the manager of the hotel I was staying at. The tacos were on standard large sized corn tortillas and warmed up on the grill they cook the burgers which gave them a slight crunch which was a nice touch. After I got my food I realized I should have just order two tacos since they're packed with tons of meat. The flavor of the meat was surprisingly really good since Solvang doesn't really have a good selection of Mexican food. I also ordered a small order of fries and found them to be seasoning perfectly and because they're very hearty a small order is plenty for 1-2 people. I ordered a garden salad for my wife and she said it was refreshing and hit the spot. They fill a large styrofoam container with fresh romaine lettuce, freshly diced tomato and cheese. I dumped about half a carne Asada tacos worth of meat on her salad and she said it bump the salad up from great to amazing since it added diced onions, cilantro and meat to it. I suggest just buying a single Asada taco so you can add the meat to your garden salad. I highly recommend getting the chocolate, banana and peanut butter milk shake. 2 Asada tacos 1 El Pastor taco Small fries Garden salad Medium milk shake Everything cost less than $30 and if I'd not eaten most of it I swear it could have fed three people.
