My family and I have been coming to the Depot for years, typically for birthday celebrations. The prices have increased, but unfortunately the quality of the food has not kept up. We recently went for my sister's birthday while I was in town. The building is starting to look a bit rundown (note the missing windows above the main entrance) and there is quite a bit of staining on the ceiling, apparently from water leaks. The wait staff was great, and we all like the salad bar and the bread and cheese that you cut yourself. The entrees, however, were disappointing. The meat on three of our four orders was overcooked (my nephew's medium rare steak was burned and charred on the outside), and three of the four sides (steamed vegetables and rice) were served ice cold. I ordered the baked scallop and steak combo and the scallops were delicious, but my medium steak was well done, and my vegetables were cold. By the time they brought out replacement vegetables and rice, we were already almost halfway through our meals. I used to love coming here when I was younger when the wait staff dressed in overalls and hats like train engineers. This place definitely needs a makeover to get it back to the fine dining experience it used to be. read more

We love the classic old train station building. The large open dining room with high ceiling is beautiful and quiet. The venue is excellent. We favor the steaks, but There is a great variety of choices. The salad bar is awesome ... very fresh and every thing you would hope for in a salad bar. Waitservice is excellent. Attentive at the right time. We had dinner at the Depot twice this month. My wife had the Beef Welington and she loved it. I am getting that next time! Depot is one of our favorite Restaurants. Not a great experience--unfortunately. The food was mostly good, which honestly makes this more frustrating to write. A few things missed the mark: the sliced steak was dry, the butter sauce had congealed, the garlic didn't seem fully sautéed, and the calamari was clearly frozen. Chef... come on. If you can't execute it well, it probably shouldn't be on the menu. It wasn't edible. When we arrived, we were told the pub was first come, first served and directed to wait in a specific area. At some point, we realized we were standing in a main walkway for staff--completely unintentional--and as soon as I noticed, I moved out of the way. What really didn't sit right was what happened next. Multiple staff members were openly talking about us--not just among themselves, but to guests sitting at the bar. People were turning around and looking at us, which made the situation incredibly uncomfortable and honestly a bit embarrassing. I started my career in restaurants and now work in a leadership role in the food industry, that kind of behavior is simply not acceptable. Guests should never feel like they're being talked about or put on display. Also worth noting--it's not a great look to have staff sitting and eating in front of customers. It's a shame, because this place has a strong reputation. With better attention to professionalism and the overall guest experience, it could be really solid. I even said to my husband that we likely would have had a completely different experience had we been seated in the dining room. It does make you wonder if there's a reason certain staff are assigned to the pub. For context, I typically tip 30-40% given my background in the industry. I went here as a kid with my grandparents and since then the quality has fallen and it can't get up. As another reviewer mentioned, the furniture feels like its going to give out under you, the place is drab, despite the gorgeous building itself. The salad bar is basic. Their signature steak was 1/3 inedible hard gristle. I ordered "peppercorn" sauce as an extra with my 8oz steak and the server called the brown goop that came out "peppercorn gravy" - I traded with my cousin because hers came with bearnaise sauce. The rice pilaf was SO GROSS. There were all the exact same size and color cube pieces of red and green bell pepper - very much like an Atkins frozen dinner I had where it was clearly stamped out in a factory. There was a funky like olive? flavor to it? I had to eat and drink other stuff to get the taste out of my mouth. They don't bother bringing bread to the table, you have to get it (and if nobody else has touched it, you have to slice it yourself) at the salad bar. This is a wonderful place. The setting says it all; you are seated trackside in the old Beverly (train) Depot so expect to see at least one train roll by as you eat. The food is tasty American fare with an emphasis on steak, prime rib is the signature dish. Fresh salad bar, freshly baked bread that you cut for yourself along with cheese at the far end. There is a cheerful fire in a big fireplace in the main dining room. The waitstaff are personable and friendly. They don't hover but they do check in periodically to make sure you have everything you need. We never felt rushed and we almost closed the place down. So grateful to our server. Really nice ambiance and we will be back soon. read more

My family went to Beverly Depot for a celebration on my mother's 82 birthday, and my sisters Birthday celebration. The waitresses seem very disinterested, and never cracked a smile. We all felt very rushed. For a 500 plus Bill for the 12 of us, the food was not worth it at all. Honestly I had a better meal, and stake at the 99 Restaurant. Never asked up for coffee, or Tea. Then took my plate away while I was talking to my family member. The seating was cramped and tight. I said excuse me to 5 different people just trying to get to the salard bar. Crazy tight. Have been going here off and on for thirty years or more. Food is great. But it is easy too noisy. You can't even hear yourself chew nevermind carry on a conversation. Plus, be forewarned, they are allowing people to use their parking lot to leave their cars and take the train to Salem! Thus paying customers can't find a parking spot. With the Hardcover closed we thought we'd give it another try this past Saturday 10/5. Disappointing service, no parking, too nosey. And pricing them selves out. Not worth it to me any more. Ok... we had reservations for 9 pm on valentines day. I had never been there before. Nice location.. very crowded,. We were seated very fast. Staff and service was pretty good especially for how busy they were. The menu was pretty old and low budget. The appetizers ... calamari and French onion soup was pretty good. Drinks were great.. espresso martini and my girlf had a margarita. Main courses baked haddock wasn't the best.. a little cold and soggy, my girl had the grilled swordfish and said it was delicious but she was probably be polite idk.. I'll give them the benefit of doubt and go again.. service was great... a little pricey too but so is everything these days! read more

Depot was a great spot for my mom's 85th birthday dinner. 3 generations had a great time, enjoying the salad bar, steak and seafood. There was easy wheelchair access. Service was friendly and efficient. 1/2 off entree for the birthday dinner is nice (even if it used to be free when I was younger). read more

Again disappointed. I guess in short I could just say the highlight was the self-serve salad bar. The french union soup was watery and bland. The prime rib was fattier than expected. The key lime pie I took one bite and pushed it away. I usually love a good key lime pie, but tonight was not my night. It did not taste like any key lime pie I remember. Service was very slow and they were not that busy. Dirty dishes at the table and the waitress was just feet away gabbing away with another waitress. I hope this place survives, in the past years it has been excellent. Something is terribly wrong, maybe management will figure it out in time. read more

This has been a go to place for years. Has been surpassed by some of the newer steak houses but the Depot is more reasonably priced. The salad,cheese and bread bar is still a winner. The train station ambience with fireplace and trains rolling by is hard to beat. Can't go wrong here. read more

06/28/25 Wonderful meal at the Beverly Depot Restaurant this evening. As the Northshore knows the best salad bar anywhere. The meals we ordered were superb. However, after many visits, I have to admit that this classic New England steakhouse has become my go-to spot for a good steak in Beverly. No, it's not the Bancroft--this is a tier below--but for me, that hits the sweet spot for a relaxed night out. Kick off your meal with calamari, chowder, and the nostalgic charm of their old-school salad bar, and don't skip the crème brûlée to finish (it's a table favorite). If you're into being treated poorly, then this is the place to dine. From the moment we entered, we were met by the nastiest hostess I've ever encountered. When we told her we didn't have a reservation, she immediately seemed bothered by our presence and refused to speak to us. We had to assume we were meant to follow her to our table as she gave us the silent treatment. She angrily snatched up the place settings, which only added to the confusion of what was happening. The restaurant wasn't even busy; we arrived around 6:30 with plenty of time before closing. During dinner, we felt rushed by another waitress who kept trying to clear our plates before we'd finished. And for a $35 steak, the food was subpar at best. As I said, if you enjoy being treated badly, this is the spot for you. If not, save your money and go somewhere else. Driving from the Framingham to go see a show in Beverly, looked to Yelp for some choices. It was just starting to rain, but the parking lot was huge and finding the entrance was super easy. Walked in and the first impression I got was rustic. Not too loud, tables close to each other. Sturdy table, comfortable seat. Walked past the salad bar, oblivious to it, but that will come up later on my review. Previewed the menu online, but here I saw what I had been desiring for quite some time. Beef Wellington. Our waitstaff introduced themselves, drink order placed. Saw clam chowder on the menu and dove right in. Dinner companion had the beef barley soup. The salad bar was part of the price for dinner, so my companion got a small plate of this and that and mentioned that the cheese there was one of the creamiest she had ever had. Seeing the bread with her plate, I had to try. Winning! The chowder dipped in with the bread was over the top delicious. I still had beef Wellington coming, I didn't want to fill up, so I but my tongue and stopped eating the bread. Chowder and soup plates gone, not too long after, main courses came. My side was the garlic mashed potatoes, oh my. Genuinely satisfied all around, clean restaurant, low noise level and very friendly staff. Highly recommended. No need to get dressed up here, relaxed atmosphere and plenty of parking, but do make sure to make a reservation! read more

My husband and I had a date night at the restaurant. He ordered the Rib Eye cooked medium, I ordered the Old Fashion Sliced Steak. Per usual we were told we could to head to the salad bar. We made our salads, cut a few slices of fresh bread and cheese. The bread was so fresh and delicious. The cheese however was very warm and soft as was the salad, usually it is nice and chilled. Our dinner comes out and mine was placed first, looked delicious and exactly what I ordered, my husbands meal on the other hand was a PRIME RIB cooked medium rare. My husband does not eat prime rib or does he eat medium rare. When we mentioned the mistake they offered to make a new meal. He declined because I would've been eating alone or if I waited for his correct meal to be cooked, my food would've been cold. He did eat a few bites but it was not to his liking. The manager came over, apologized and offered us 2 free desserts. We declined the desserts. I am not sure how 2 8$ desserts would compensate a$43.00 steak. I did mention that an offer of 2 desserts does not come close to the cost of the meal and the mistake so the only compensation they made was taking my 1 drink off the bill. Stopped in Saturday night with two friends. We were able to park right out front and we were seated immediately. Salad bar was an absolute delight. Rare prime rib was incredible. Fried ice cream ended the evening and I was struggling to finish the generous portion! Atmosphere was on point. Brick inside with a tall wooden roof. The high ceilings make it feel very roomy. The atmosphere is excellent as are the servers, however the food is average. I am interested in restaurants that provide excellent or great food, not just good or average. Four Of is recently dined here, and in spite of the many highly positive reviews, here's what I found: I ordered the baked scallops with a 6oz sirloin. As a lifelong local resident and a veteran working for a number of high quality restaurants, "baked scallops " usually means your scallops are cooked with some type of stuffing or cracker crumbs. If you offer no stuffing, then you're really not serving "baked " scallops, you're serving "broiled " scallops. I was disappointed when they arrived to see that there were scallops lightly dusted with bread crumbs and that was it. They weren't particularly flavorful and they didn't appear to me to be traditional baked scallops. I also ordered the chicken breast over liquini with a mushroom cream sauce and asparagus to take home. I specifically asked to get extra sauce, but when I got home, I discovered that they did not give me extra sauce as I ordered and every single piece of asparagus was overcooked! The sauce was also too thin and it lacked the succulent, rich flavor you would expect in a mushroom cream sauce. Like the scallops, it was flavorless. Getting so much overcooked asparagus also rather killed the dish! The salad bar, while clean and well done, lacked several things that could have made it excellent. The lettuce was a little limp and cut too large... there were no high quality olives. The beats were low quality and warm. Another review cited some high quality creamy cheese to go with the bread but I didn't see any soft cheese and the one cheese they offered wasn't anything special so the salad bar, an excellent idea, just wasn't executed well enough. All my guests ordered fried ice cream for dessert and all reported their food as good but not great. The bread was also cold and, again, very average. Overall, it was exceedingly average and, for me, that doesn't merit my going back again. I wish I could offer a more positive review but this was my experience. read more

I went to The Depit for a job today and the manager was so rude it was unbelievable. if that's what The Depots manager is like i feel bad for the workers. If that guy can't control himself and act professional The Depot needs new management. I've worked watering for two decades and I've never been treated so rude by a manager before. Came with two other guests. Dining room was a bit darker than normal. Place looked a little more run down than it used to be. eg Baseboard radiator detached from wall, place isn't as clean as it could be. Went to the salad bar as usual after ordering. I hadn't finished my salad when my entree was brought to the table. Ordered the Steak Au Poirve. My food came raw/rare. I don't mind rare but this was partially raw. Waitress was no where to be found. Took a few tries to get her attention. She grabbed my plate so the kitchen could bring it to medium rare. After a few minutes it appeared again. Same steak. I cut into it and it was slightly cooked more but still rare. They asked if I wanted to try again or order something else at this point. I said I'd still like steak au poirve. They took my plate away. After a literal 3 minutes the plate came back. Same steak now flogged to hell by the repeated cookings(and the fact that I cut into the center of it each time). When I cut into it the cooking was unusual. I have no way of knowing for sure but I believe the steak was microwaved on the last try. The center was more cooked than closer to the ends. That kind of uneven cooking is impossible in a conventional oven. Ignoring all the meat temp problems, the sauce itself just isn't as good as it used to be. Not sure if they don't bother with brandy any more. The place is a far cry from where it once was. In the past the waiter would swing by the table after the food was delivered to ask how everything is. Entrees would not be delivered until the salad was done so the timing used to be better.(They used to make it a point to tell you that they would delay putting your order in until you've started your salad). In the past if they didn't temp meat correctly they would actually give you a new steak and start over. Certainly after the second failure they should have done that. So the steak was not very good. I noticed right away there was a char on it. I'm guessing they attempted to flash the steak on a grill and it flamed burning the exterior. Never had that in this restaraunt before. Seemed like the steak was not layered in peppercorns, nor did the sauce have much of them. The baked potato it came with was smallish and lacked the crispy skin of a good baked potato. I'm genuinely saddened and disappointed that one of my favorite "go to" restaraunts in the area where I knew I could get a good steak(for years) has become this. Cooking steak pieces 3x and they didn't even have the decency to take it off the bill. They instead offer a desert as if that makes up for the bad steak. I find this an asinine business decision. They saved the cost of a steak but they lost a customer. I have no reason to go back here ever again. When my company wants to do it's party I think I'll want to steer them elsewhere as well. Anyone who asks me will be sent to a different restaraunt for a decent steak. read more

The Beverly Depot is literally located *at* the train tracks. The building is charming, an ambiance enhanced by the working fireplace. There's a salad bar, (which I haven't seen for years) with all of the basic ingredients. There's also bread and cheese if you'd like. We've been going to the Depot for 20 years. After tonight we're never going back. The steak was not cooked as requested, the beef wellington bland, the baked haddock served cold. We used to love the salad bar, tonight it was dirty and not stocked. On Mother's day my mother in law was treated rudely by Elisabeth the server. I asked about a glass of wine for my mother in law and was told she has other priorities and would get to the wine. Not impressed. I orderd blackened salmon, got grilled. Very bland. Two of our party of five got prime rib, very small and not much flaver. One other got beef wellington, again, bland. Don't go here for prime rib if you like a particular cut. They don't know their a*% from their elbows. I asked for a big cap (the delicious part that runs around the outside), and they brought me one with almost none at all. I complained and the waiter told me they had a full prime rib back there, but no other cut would have more cap. This makes no sense. What they had given me clearly came from the loin end, but if they knew the cap is huge at the opposite end (the chuck end), they could have cut me a slab from there and I would have been happy. There is really no excuse for a restaurant that prides itself in prime rib to be that ignorant about the dish. read more

This should be a 4 star review as the food and service was excellent, but come on guy's The mice are running rampant whilst diners eat, two and three at a time cute little rodents running all over The place, so I looked back in The reviews and sure enough this has been brought to your attention two months ago and still you have no control, I hope they can take care of this problem soon because this place has been a staple for years and so many employees are reliant on a paycheck it's not funny, I'm hoping for their Sake this problem gets taken care of soon !!! read more

I've been going to this restaurant since it opened and it used to be my favorite but the last 3 times I've been here, it was terrible. Last night the prime rib was so tough I could barely chew it and it was practically raw when I asked for medium rare. Another time I was served cold steak And st Patrick's day I was served cold fry corned beef So I'm done There are so many restaurants in Beverly, salem alone to enjoy read more
