First time back since the covid-19 shut down. I attempted to call in our orders, but no one answered. I finally placed my order inside after waiting in the line outside for 25 mins. I ordered 4 to go dinners with deserts. Three of my dinners were sitting on the counter, but they were literally stolen by someone that had a single carry out plate. Unfortunately, I had another 15 minute wait in the congested area with SIX other people. Too many people for this small area and several of them were not wearing masks. Once the manager entered without a mask I asked about their mask policy and if it applies to everyone. The manager replied " I am not here". My reply was "if you walk within less than a foot of my face, you are here and I would appreciate you respecting my personal space or you wearing a mask as you walk past me talking". I asked the cashier to PLEASE rush the food preparers with my order since I had been waiting 45 mins already. The ladies (cashier and servers) were kind enough to rush my orders out again after they realized another patron stole them from their counter top then walked out. They were very understanding. However, I drove a block down the street and realized that I did not have my deserts. I wanted to leave them, but i couldn't get anyone on the phone and I refused to donate $12. After all of the waiting, 3 of our fried chicken dinners were too dry and too hard to eat. We ate our sides and bread and called it a night. The other chicken dinner must have been freshly cooked. Nearly $60 down the drain!!!!! If you do not mind taking a chance on contracting covid-19 while waiting in this congested area inside, where the manager (excluding the cashiers and food preparers) and some patrons do not respect others by wearing masks, just to get some DRY and HARD chicken and some decent sides, I would recommend this restaurant. The Bears Den is hidden deep in the forest of houses in Macon, Georgia. If you are successful in finding the restaurant.... keep your mouth shut. I walked in and was welcomed to the restaurant and when I told them it was my first time, they had great patience and were more than glad to help. They make great fried chicken, fried pork chops, sweet potato pie, greens.... the list goes on. The key to their success is quality food for a great price. I don't mind paying more for my meal if there is pride and quality in the food. I am very happy to say you don't pay a big price, but you get awesome quality. Mums the word. So hush! read more

We come to Macon for the Fired Works Regional Ceramics Exhibit every year, and every year, we get lunch at The Bear's Den after we set up for the show. Excellent soul food in a classic meat and three! We've never been disappointed. The veggies are not over-salted. They still taste like fresh vegetables. The meats and entrees are delicious. The staff is so friendly and helpful, but even other customers are happy to tell you their favorites. We love the squash casserole, fried chicken, beef stroganoff, cabbage, and corn fritters. A favorite of mine. Haven't eaten here in a year or better but that is only due to the pandemic going on. Staff were very cautious by wearing mask and changing gloves between customers. It's a cafeteria style meat and veggie place with take out available too. The fried chicken is the best I've ever eaten! So crispy, I can't pass it up, even when the other meats look equally delicious. (And fried chicken is rarely my go-to option otherwise). I have to disagree with the two reviews on the chicken tenders. I found them to be dry. I found the cornbread to be moist, but I didn't like the flavor. I agree there is a lot of grease in the food, but you cannot go wrong with green beans and mac n cheese. I like the gravy with the chicken so it wont be so dry. read more

Pretty Good Meat & Three The Bear's Den is a typical Southern meat & three café. The food is fast since it is served cafeteria-style. Compared to some of the other meat & three cafes throughout the south, this one is fine. It doesn't stack up to some of the best since none of the items were great. Everything was simply good to very good. The regular fried chicken was nice, but (surprisingly) I liked the chicken strips better. The collards were standard cafeteria-style. The fried okra was good. Near the university and not too far off of the interstate or downtown, the restaurant occupies what looks like a former residence. The menu changes daily and is served cafeteria-style. So I came here on a Thursday around 2 o'clock in the afternoon with my girlfriend and I have to say that my expectations for bears and was not met. I got the fried chicken macaroni and cheese dumplings and cornbread. The dumplings were the best part the corn bread was really dry and was not a little sweet like I like it but the chicken I got was dark meat and it was so dry. I have never eaten dark meat chicken that drive. The macaroni and cheese was okay I can make better at home. I have eaten soul food in so many different places and this place fail to impress me.
