I ordered liver with onions with a side of cabbage and coleslaw with a piece of crackling bread for my dinner. I also ordered a baked chicken breast with dressing and cranberry sauce, and a side of squash soufflé to go for dessert. I had a beautiful big slice of baked custard pie. Everything was quite tasty. The liver was tender, and he piled a whole bunch of onions on top which I love. The cabbage is very flavorful and cooked with I believe, bacon or ham and very tender. My favorite is always the squash soufflé. The restaurant is quite large kind of like cafeteria style when you come through and you can pick and choose, which is where I ended up getting a plate to go because I couldn't make up my mind, but that works out well for me for tomorrow. Yay. The restaurant is very clean and lots of tables and booths. The staff is very friendly and didn't rush me through the line. I would definitely recommend stopping in and having a nice lunch or early dinner here when you're coming through MACON Georgia. read more

Nothing bad. The S&S at my location has finally reopened. I will leave a review after patronizing it. The Bloomfield Rd location is too far away. I think of patronizing it; but can't remember the last time I've ever eaten there.Im only giving it 3 stars because the site requires a rating. I will evaluate it after a current visit. The only reason I went today was because I had a $5 off reward. Came last week and the oven roasted chicken was so little. The veggie bowls were clear cups last week. The amount wasn't even a serving. Today I wanted oven roasted chicken but guess what? It was so tiny so I ordered chopped steak. It's not fairly big either and I will be eating again later I'm sure. Don't Judge Me, but this is an appetizer sampler for me. I should have ordered an extra veggie maybe. I'm not deducting stars because the food is good however I am not blind to see these portion sizes are small. Maybe a different company is being used now for purchasing meats. I have no clue. Worst run operation I have seen on a while. They have been around a long time - they clearly have not figured it out. Don't take orders if you can't serve them for hours. read more

The salt is back! It's always been salty, but the two previous experiences were good. The salt level was perfect. But tonight's (12-10-25) experience was like eating a salt lick. The tenders were good, but the sides (green beans and squash casserole) were inedible. Straight into the trash. I won't be back. Also, two sides that were paid for weren't put in the bag. I've eaten at this location several occasions but my first time writing a review. First of all the food is always tasty but today the pear salad was sour. It may have been the mayonnaise not sure but it was taken off the bill. I had 3 veggies and baked chicken. Again everything was good except the pear salad. In my opinion those salads should be made upon request or made fresh everyday. The staff is always friendly and outgoing. My favorite waiter Mr. Jimmy Scott was not here today or had just gotten off. He's been here over 50yrs! If you're ever in the area, stop at this location I'm sure he'll be here. He's super friendly and his personality is like no other. I was actually very impressed, laugh if you wish, but yes I was. Of the two Macon S & S Cafeterias, apparently this is the less-loved one, but still I was very pleased. For one, the interior looks like it has not changed since at least the 1980s if not perhaps years before. The sign outside could well date back to the fifties, for that matter. I like this, because it embodies a certain nostalgia for when cafeterias were more popular than they are today. Indeed, when you pay upon leaving, they even have an old change-sorting machine dating from 1934. Yes, they still use it, too, and the cashier told me it works just fine, every single day! If you're not accustomed to cafeterias however, just coming into this restaurant can be a little confusing. There is a side entrance by the parking lot however that's only for take-away orders and you cannot enter the main restaurant via this door. Apparently they do a smart business in take-away, too. You go to the front instead and there are two doors: the one of the left is the one into the restaurant and the one on the right is the exit. So you enter through the left door. Once you do, you weave your way around to the serving line where you pick out your food but you won't pay until finished, right before leaving through that other door. As to the food, it's typical Southern cafeteria fare including those gems of Morrison's and S & S and other classic cafeterias such as the jalapeño pepper corn bread, various odd salads, plus always some sort of fish smothered in something and various pie and cake slices covered in cellophane as they await customers. Everything I had was really good, especially the fried chicken which honestly ranks with some of the best I've ever had. Seriously. The green bean casserole also was very good as was the German chocolate cake, which was the cellophane'd dessert I picked. The staff are cheery and helpful and they had good unsweet iced tea (and I'm certain they would have just as good sweet tea). Really, nothing to complain over. Not fine dining, but a very fair price and a trip back in time as well. read more

I never drive through Macon without stopping here. It's one of the few real cafeterias still around. I used to say that Luby's in Texas (before they closed) was my favorite cafeteria but S&S has them beat. I have never had a bad experience here. I like the Bloomfield Macon GA Smith and Son's aka S & S cafeteria, but on the WEEKENDS only I have been getting potato salad with what tastes like fingernail polish remover taste in the potato salad and I can scrape a potato off and the potatoes are good, but they are putting less pickles, eggs, onions, no pickle juice at all and I have found carrots and mustard seeds in it and they need to find out who is putting fingernail polish remover in the potato salad. I know it is supposed to be non toxic but they should have cameras that they can look at. If s and s cafeteria doesn't have cameras then for liability reasons they need cameras so they can hold the employee accountable and they watch them whenever they get a complaint. Please if you find food that tastes like it contains a chemical, please let corporate office know. The phone number to each store goes to an employee not the manager and I may eventually have to notify the health department and they can see if employees are being allowed to bring chemicals into the building. read more

I just loved it then you add white rice & gravy , cream corn w/ bacon, cabbage and Mexico cornbread that's a combination made with love . Fast checkout line also able to get Cash back added to your bill to give the waitress a cash tip; is an unusually great idea . I think the place caters to the 65+ crowd, which is perfectly fine, but realize that you're going to get fairly bland food. My fried flounder was ok. My wife said her chicken and dumplings was pretty good. My daughter got BBQ and it was terrible. It was drowned in sauce and very unpleasant to eat. Most of it was uneaten. Sides were ok but again, bland. I guess the prices are pretty good for the portion size. I'm not sure if I was more disappointed in this place or H&H Cafe. read more

Online order, chicken raw and bloody, verything else fine your cook needs to do better

I've had a couple of meals from this location over the last couple of weeks. The first time was a take out order of roast beef with collards and creamed potatoes and gravy. The process to get the meal took a while but the staff was courteous. The young lady showed me my order before packing it up for me. The collards needed something, salt, pepper, vinegar? The creamed potatoes and gravy were outstanding! The roast beef was nicely medium rare but tough to chew. I decided to eat at the location the second time. I was served immediately. I had roast beef again (watched how my portion was carved, placed on my plate, with several large spoonfuls of au jus). I also had the creamed potatoes with gravy and green beans. The waitresses were friendly and kept an eye on most customers (regulars?). They kept busy though. The green beans were ok. And the creamed potatoes with gravy were just "ok" this time. So, parts of the roast beef were dry. I mean like beef jerky dry. The au jus was sooo salty and it didn't help much. I suspect the gentleman carving the roast beef didn't know to carve it across the grain, or at least at an angle (he cut my portion horizontally), making it difficult to cut and chew. I'm sure there are plenty of great food options there judging by the volume of customers at this location. It just needs a few small adjustments, from my experience. read more

S & S...Where to start. First I have to admit to having a bias. I have been dining at cafeteria's like S&S since my parents took the family out to Friday dinner in the late sixties. At the time the restaurant was in downtown Macon (near Cherry St?)...as was Sears & Roebuck. Though I don't get to go often these days, I enjoy it when I do. Despite my fondness, cafeterias appear to be a fading genre. Consistent with a cafeteria, the menu varies with day of the week, however S & S is basically southern fare. Today, I had the trout almondine, squash casserole, mac & cheese, tartar sauce, egg custard pie, and crackling bread. The trout almondine was good, however the breading is always heavy. As a result, I didn't finish my portion; which was pretty large. The squash casserole was good; though not exceptional. Tartar sauce was good, if a bit oniony. Mac and Cheese, acceptable. The crackling bread is exceptional (for those who like that kind of thing). I loved it and truthfully, will go to S &S for that (and the liver and onions) alone. The egg custard too was VERY good. My greedy eyes were begging for the sweet potato pie (a great choice in the past); perhaps next time. The waitress kept my soda filled and checked on me a number of times during the meal. All the staff was nice. The bathroom was clean AND smelled that way. Overall, a good meal, and I will go there again. read more

I've lived in Macon all of my life and have eaten at S & S Cafeteria on Riverside Drive many times. Yesterday we decided to try the online ordering. My husband went to pick up the order. He was told to go thru the restaurant down the line just as if he were ordering and when he got to the employee who rang up the meals she could tell him where to pick up our order. When he got there she was too busy with her cell phone to assist him, without even looking up pointed and said just go over there and get it. I usually pick up online orders anywhere we order from so he had no clue what to do. Is it too much to ask for an employee to put away a cell phone and do the job she's paid to do? As there was only ONE BAG there he picked it up and came home. Much to our disappointment it was not our order. I immediately began calling the restaurant and have been calling off and on since then only to find out they never answer the phone. Guess I have to show up and show out in person. I don't mind, I'll be stopping by tonight. I will also say the food we did get was so disgusting we couldn't even eat it. How can you mess up fried chicken, mashed potatos and green beans??? I will start my review by copying and pasting the first two sentences from my review of Polly's Corner Cafe: When I walked into the dining room, I wasn't sure if it was a restaurant or a retirement village. Now, I certainly have nothing against the elderly, but seeing so many of them concentrated in one place should be a key to any diner as to what kind of food you can expect - mushy and/or flavorless. Well, the style of this restaurant is what one may come to expect from a typical cafeteria - get in a line to pick your food and take it to a table. The decor is just plain and unremarkable. The food itself...I honestly can't remember what I ordered because it all tasted the same. I'm seriously not even trying to be sarcastic here. I had meat and some veggies and every bit of it was just mushy baby food. Absolutely nothing stood out. After eating there, you definitely get a feeling that people just don't care...about the food, the flavor, life, or anything at all really. It's depressing. The food presentation & selection, plus the friendly and smiling employees made my dining experience exceptional...And the food was delicious, hot, and simply southern cooking at it's best. got the liver and onions which I am very prone to do in. In the "old days" they piled it high. I could hardly find mine in amongst the pile of onions, which I requested. Note this is beef liver and not calf which should have been my first clue. Just not the same. Nice friendly people though and all in all a decent place to go to. Very convenient to 75 if traveling through but not on the 475 bypass if you heading north or south and you will usually miss it. Would go again, would not order beef liver however. read more

A great place to stop for some old fashioned home cooking. Pick your meat, vegi's, bread and drink served by one of the friendly cafeteria workers. I suggest the baked chicken, sliced roast beef (if you see pink in middle), anything with sweet potatoes and the sweet tea. A Sunday favorite in Macon, so get here early to avoid the long lines.
