The food was pretty good and the price ok but the service after I sat down made my whole dining experience. I must have gotten 4 refills on sweet tea while eating and she brought me a tea to go. I was so content in the warm southern atmosphere of the restaurant that I decided to get me a piece of custard pie and cup of coffee which she also brought me a to go cup of. I was worried I'd be sitting there with such a small empty glass. By the way my custard pie is Devine. I had liver and onions with butter beans, cabbage and a side salad. I totally ate all of it but the veggies could have been cooked more for my liking and needed salt on all veggies. All in all it was a good meal in a relaxing atmosphere. It is what it is, a traditional cafeteria style restaurant. A bit antiquated but clean. Service is always jovial, helpful, and efficient. The baked spaghetti is good, fried chicken of course, haven't had a bad side, desserts you can't pass up. I was so delighted to have broiled chicken livers available on Saturday lunch menu a couple of weeks ago washed down by delicious sweet tea. Selections change should you be the type to call about a specific dish or favorite, I'd recommend doing so (Like me and chicken livers). A little out of the way and a bit unattractive outside, but family friendly + yummy comfort food on the inside! read more

What a pleasant surprise. We enjoyed our late lunch and the price for three of us was fair. The restuarant was clean and the servers on the line were intentative. We made our selections and we received everything we wanted. The food was fresh and tasted very good. I ordered liver and onions, Hunny ordered fried chicken, and mama ordered chicken and dumplings. We were all pleased with just about everything. The ice tea was refreshing, smooth, and delicious as well. There's an early bird 10% off special going on and my mom is clearly old enough for any discounts, but the cashier did not mention it, and we didn't either. We had to ask the restaurant attendant for refills of iced tea and not one dish was removed from the table as we finished eating. Always a treat to eat here! I was pressed for time so I ordered in Take Out Shoppe. It was busy considering it was at lunch time. I ordered a veggie plate and a side order of Pear salad. Delicious! The Pear Salad is my favorite salad here. Always freshly prepared The veggies were tasty as usual . 4 veggies $5.79.... The parking lot was full for the dining hall and as I drove around to the take out it was full. There are maybe 5 designated spaces for take out. This parking lot is shared with Waffle House and an Attorneys office. The only issue I have is the location and getting into the parking lot. The way the entrance is designed you have to cut across traffic to get here which is a dangerous intersection. Nonetheless I got in safely and I was satisfied with my food. You can choose from a ​few combinations of dishes for a fixed price. I like it, but it took three people to explain me the menu and I still wasn't​ fully sure after all! The seating​ area is lovely, offering​ many well-spaced comfortable tables. The ambiance​ is very relaxing. The food itself can be a good hit or a miss. I rushed in for a veggie plate this evening. The line was long. The cashier and 1 other person prepared food to reduce the line. Both were in good spirits and smiling. The cashier did not remove her gloves as she went back and forth from the cash register to the food service line. I usually turn around when I see this, but I had to grab food quickly. The cashier prepared my food, then grabbed 2 pieces of bread with her hands still wearing the dirty gloves. I did not want to make a scene so I leaned towards her as she placed my food on the counter. I whispered to ask if she could keep the bread and grab 2 pieces with tongs because she was wearing the same gloves she took money with. She yelled to the manager "she don't want the bread cause I touched it so you fix it". I told the manager that I was not going to accept nasty food, so I'll take a refund. He asked that I give him a minute to wash his hands. He searched for gloves, but it took him a few minutes to find them. Then he placed my bread in the bag. What he did after that was despicable and demonstrated his vile temper. Any woman, man, or manager that has the galls to gesture physical violence towards a customer or anyone, especially a WOMAN who was non threatening in front of others is a problem and that is not okay. He had lost his ability to act reasonably and rationally in this situation. Demonstrating an act of physical violence towards a customer while at work simply because they did not want bread out of someone's nasty hands could have ended differently. There was no reason to escalate this situation or to behave inappropriately or disrespectfully. This person represents the culture of this business. I will NEVER EVER patronize S&S again. read more

I have loved S and S since I was child growing up in Augusta, and just realized that I never had the pleasure to reviewing them on YELP. Their spots ooze with Southern charm, hospitality, and remarkable deliciousness of food items from days gone by with heart turkey in dressing, cracklin' bread, various greens, salads, and that amazing friend chicken. A lot of folks in my hometown, when they don't feel like cooking, head to S and S after church on Sunday to grab lunch at their Take Out Shoppe or dine in. It is still a favorite spot of my family's, and I sometimes head their to grab lunch when I'm visiting in my old stomping ground, Macon. I went yesterday while in the area visiting and had to get the Turkey and Dressing, Turnip Greens, Mac and Cheese (which is my absolute favorite), and the cracklin' bread. They are famous for that cracklin' bread which is simply delicious and is always perfectly cooked. I finished off with a decadent slice of sweet potato pie. I love their sweet potato pie and I adore their peach cobbler. They are must for family dinners, solo lunch, and for visitors to Georgia who love some good old, stick-to-your-bones kind of cooking. A great Cafeteria to eat at when your in the Macon, Georgia area. Plenty of seating, you pick what you want to eat on the serving line then sit down and the waitresses or waiter will refill your drinks and take plates away. When you pay your bill you have to wait till the transaction before you and the family can leave but here's the catch the door is locked while your paying but why though? I guess to keep people from coming in the wrong way and there is also a government official on site. I feel like my review is mostly for people from the North that don't understand this kind of restaurant concept, lol. There just aren't a lot of cafeteria style places where I'm from in NJ! They had a lot more food options than I expected. There is a menu board posted at the front that lists the major entrees and I assume this changes from day to day.. A bunch of them come with 2 sides and a piece of bread, all for so cheap..$8.69! Some of the entrees they had when I was there during lunch were fried flounder, country fried steak, chopped steak, baked spaghetti, fried chicken, broiled fish.. classic, home cooked items. Lots of sides to pick from that they serve in small dishes. They even had a choice of bread; texas toast, cornbread, spicy cornbread, etc. This was definitely a lot of food. But they also had a salad section and desserts (mostly pies) which would be an add-on. Despite sitting out on the line, the food we had was fresh. Their homemade tartar sauce was literally the best I've ever had! Sooo you seat yourself, servers bring soda refills and you could go back to get more food.. you pay as you leave. One thing I didn't understand is why they had the salads first, then desserts.. before all the entrees. Perhaps its some marketing trick. Definitely check this place out if you want a good, big meal. It might not be the best food you've ever had, but its an experience; its kind of fun to see what they have and build your meal. I'm sure there's something for everyone. It seems that when it comes to cafeterias, you either "get it," or you don't. On vacation Northwards from Florida, we stopped in Macon for the night, tired and hungry. Wow... What a blessing it was to find "S and S" by accident! Sadly, places like this don't exist where I live. We used to have the "Driftwood" and "Morrison's," but they are long gone. It's sort of sad the 30-and-younger FL crowd will never know what they missed out on! So for me, just entering the place was sort of a time-warp back to happy dining memories of my youth. Expect excellent Southern cooking, affordable prices, and generous portions. I had the fried fish, mac 'n cheese, green beans, and garlic toast. For dessert? An apple dumpling to share. All were top-notch! So was their polished and friendly service! I chuckle when I see reviews about the salt and fat? You do realize these Southern recipes came from days when people got up before dawn, mostly did back-breaking, sweaty manual labor all day, right? The fare at S and S is meant as a TREAT, sort of like Sunday supper, not daily dining for our modern, mostly sedentary folk! And WOW, what a treat it is! (Even I know better than to eat like this every day, silly!) There are plenty of other choices out there for the culinary-Puritanical "food police." I mourn the loss of this sort of dining place from where I live. A true glorious, gastronomical snapshot of decades past. I fell in love with S and S on my first visit! So if the word "quinoa" is part of your regular vocabulary, you should eat elsewhere. But for me? Do not waste your time bothering this place. Two years in a row on holidays my family has called in orders a day ahead of time and was disappointed to find out that my order info was either not taken down or was lost because at the time of my arrival my food was not ready, prepared or even available to order. Had to wait in two different lines in 10 or 15 minute intervals to find out this information and eventually just walked out empty handed due to the frustration of my order not being ready or even available to order. I have eaten at this restaurant location numerous times over the past 15 years and can genuinely say that the food is excellent and reasonably priced. I will say, however, that the cashiers in the takeout shop are abrupt and have little patience when taking your order. There is no welcoming attitude except to take the order and hurry you through the line, often resulting in orders getting messed up with food items missing. e lived in Macon all of my life and have eaten at S & S Cafeteria  on Riverside Drive many times.  Yesterday we decided to try the online ordering.  My husband went to pick up the order.  He was told to go thru the restaurant down the line just as if he were ordering and when he got to the employee who rang up the meals she could tell him where to pick up our order.  When he got there she was too busy with her cell phone to assist him, without even looking up pointed and said just go over there and get it.  I usually pick up online orders anywhere we order from so he had no clue what to do.  Is it too much to ask for an employee to put away a cell phone and do the job she's paid to do? As there was only ONE BAG there he picked it up and came home.  Much to our disappointment it was not our order.  I immediately began calling the restaurant and have been calling off and on since then only to find out they never answer the phone.  Guess I have to show up and show out in person.  I don't mind, I'll be stopping by tonight.  I will also say the food we did get was so disgusting we couldn't even eat it.  How can you mess up fried chicken, mashed potatos and green beans???  Seriously, where is management?  Who owns this place?  Why is there no contact phone number that is actually answered? read more

Kids eat for .99 to which they receive either jello or a specific dessert (Peach cobbler or strawberry shortcake) and entree, 2 sides, bread, and drink. Tonight I had he fired shrimp (12), beets, and lemon meringue pie. All we ok. Middle of the road fare. My son ordered country fried steak. What he got was mystery meat covered in gravy served over rice. He was it was ok but he would never get again.!This is mediocre food. Service is adequate....nothing special. read more

The waitress only came over once to refill our drinks but didn't say a word then never came back. First of all their service was horrible we explained to them we were from out of town and didn't understand their way of ordering. It was myself and 8 kids. Kids plates were advertised as .99 cent when in actuality they were 1.49 plus tax. Myself and my 16 year old daughter plate was 7.99 plus tax and when we were ready to leave our bill was 43.90!!!!!!!!!! How??????? I complained to the manager and she came back and adjusted the bill to 37.90. The jello tasted like dish water and the green beans were too salty. The sweet tea was extra sweet, the muffins were hard and the macaroni and cheese had no flavor at all. Not to mention the only vegan or vegetarian options were a side salad.
