Quite amazing, the "best home cooking" cafe in Macon, GA for sure. The staff was very friendly, but it's the South so no points there. I'm a Texas boy and had never had country chicken fried steak with brown gravy and onions in my life so I gave it a shot. I'm more used to the white creamy gravy on my chicken fried steak, but this dish at Bear's Den changed my mind. Not only was it moist, the brown gravy had a creamy texture which surprises me. Definitely recommend this dish. I had turnips and mash potatoes on the side to stay safe, but it was quite delicious. These side dishes were Not much better than home cooking ones, but it made me feel like home. I also had the corn bread. Though it was not the best, not many corn breads out there are better. Overall, great experience. If you are in Macon, GA and want to feel like eating at home, Bears Den can give you that feeling. read more

On my search through my yelp app I came across this restaurant which I had heard about it somewhere. I believe it was on television. Well nonetheless my mom and I entered the restaurant and was greeted with a friendly greeting. The lady's serving the food were so patient and kind as it was our first time at this restaurant. It made me feel welcome. Needless to say the food was very delicious and tasty you can tell it was prepared with a lot of flavor and love . Our dining experience was tasteful as my mom and I so graciously savored every bite. Last but not least I can't remember her name but she was so kind as we began to depart the restaurant and take the remaining of our food with us she was so gracious to serve us with a lot of love and kindness you can tell that she has a passion for the job she does. I'm not usually one for cafeteria-style restaurants, but I will make an exception for Bear's Den any day. Come with a big appetite because you will end up in a food coma for the remainder of the day. The fried chicken tenders are juicy with a great crust. The macaroni and cheese cannot be beat. The corn bread is delicious. And the banana pudding is perfect. Yum yum yum. The service is also top notch. My husband and I were recognized as repeat customers on only our second visit, and when they realized we'd brought a friend along who was from out of state, they gave her a free banana pudding. First, let me discuss the negatives. Namely, value. The combo is $10, includes two sides, entree, coke, dessert. With tip, $12. Serving size and cafeteria atmosphere don't warrant this pricetag to me. My solution: $7 carryout, skip dessert, drink water, no tip. Second negative: its loud. Eating here is similar to a high school lunchroom, but with MUCH better grub. The happy stuff: good mac n cheese (far from homemade, but still yummy ). Great fried green tomatoes, and Kickin fried chicken. Skip the lasagna, idunno what caused me to think that'd be a good road to drive down. The squash should be avoided, and the brownies should be bought in bulk.:) Overall, really good food, but best to be taken home or to work. Don't get the big combo, and don't eat on site. Soo greasy. This place kind of mystifies me because it's been around a long time and is always busy at lunch, despite serving up some pretty yucky stuff. I've been several times with friends and colleagues and I will concede that, if you are in a hurry, the cafeteria style service makes it easy to get in and get out. That being said, finding parking is a pain and everything I've ever tried was nasty. Someone tried to convince me that I just didn't appreciate Southern cooking. Well, if Southern cooking is bland, oily, overcooked and salty, then I guess I not only don't appreciate it, but I don't really want to. I may be a bit biased since the owner is a family friend and my grandmother moonlighted here after she retired. But! The Bears Den is a weekly ritual for me. Most of the staff is very friendly. The owner is on the serving line everyday and everyday comes out to speak to her friends and guests. And the food is delicious. Sometimes they aren't consistent with a few items. But for the most part they do a stellar job. Five stars cuz Grama would whup me if I didn't! Update: Have to respond to the suggestion that you not leave a tip to save on the tab from Clay K. These girls aren't exactly pulling down six figures. A dollar per person for bussing the table and taking care of anything you need is standard. If you enjoy the food and enjoy not having to bus your own table and refill your own drink then leave a dollar. It's common courtesy. And I'm almost certain anyone who would suggest otherwise has never waited tables. read more

Great Southern cooking and it makes ya good looking too! Most everything on the menu is good. I think the breading on the fried chicken is a little to heavy and that was a turn off but everything else was awesome! You can call them and listen to the automated menu to make sure they have something for you. The sweet tea is awesome here and the service is friendly. Great stop for lunch!
