Sam's Special

My family and I's go to diner for 20+ years. The service is always great and super friendly. Very big menu but we usually go for breakfast. Highly recommend the Sam's special!

Fruit tart waffle and Nutella French Toast

The list of breakfast options is soooooo deliciously long. It was a tough call but the fruit tart waffle was fantas and I'd get it again in a heartbeat. The food of my companion was excellent too. He got French toast. If there's something to complain about it's the lack of coffee refills. All in all the food makes up for it. Go here. Yum.

Love me a good, quality diner! The space is a big and the food was amazing. They have a full bar with some drinks I'll have to come back to try. Service was great. Can't wait to come back.

Delivery Order: I love Diner Food and make a point of trying new ones but this one was not a good experience. Fish and Chips had barely any seasoning, and they didn't even give any Tartar sauce. I had also ordered Chorizo Quesadilla and they too tasted just average. Maybe dining in person, it would have been better.

Greek coffee and Corn Muffin

Great waitress and service. As a mom love that their smoothies are low in sugar and have real berries-great for my kids who enjoyed drinking them in cute mugs. Also love their Greek coffee, and muffins that come as a complimentary item.

Beacon Diner Pancakes

I ordered pancakes from this diner, and I wanted my blueberries and whipped cream on the side but they wanted to charge extra price for the blueberry and extra for the whipped cream. I think they could have at least given the whipped cream with the pancakes if I ordered I side of blueberries I spent $20 just on pancakes and a side of corn beef hash. But overall, the pancakes were good.

Maryland Crab Cakes

Expect Imitation crabmeat when u order Maryland Crab Cakes here..... whaaaaaaat? No taste of crab... u should list as Imitation Maryland Crab Cakes! Very disappointed

Asian Chicken Salad
Emily P.

Had one of the best salads of my life here! The Asian Chicken Salad was DELICIOUS! The dressing was something I've never tasted before and it was SO good! The portions are also huge here! I also enjoyed the firecracker shrimp... they were crispy and crunchy and had a nice kick to them!

Usually BYOB spots struggle to create the right ambiance, but this place has something special going on. We may have had a bit too much fun because we literally closed the place down with the staff. The food was outstanding. I highly recommend ordering a few appetizers and sharing them at the table because that is what we did and everything was deliciously decadent. The burrata was packed with flavor and the basil foam was impressive. The octopus with potatoes hit perfectly. I already know I need to go back for the crab empanadas and the short rib croquettes soon. For our mains, my wife and I shared the short rib yucca gnocchi and the lobster and ricotta ravioli. Amazingly tasty across the board. This place delivered from start to finish and we will definitely be returning.

We were left ignored for over 20 minutes after seating. Finally when the waiter arrived for a drink order we had asked for a coffee to start. That didn't arrive until almost another 25 minutes and were told the bar area was busy. The food itself wasn't amazing or memorable. Ordered the cauliflower app- the sauce was too watery and didn't coat or stick to the cauliflower. If it was thickened it would glaze the cauliflower and you could actually appreciate how good it was and the dish would be so much better. For the mains we ordered the salmon burger and lemon ricotta pancakes. Both were ok but nothing amazing. The worst part was the speakers playing a happy birthday song that was extremely loud that even 2 other tables looked confused and disturbed by it. It played for well over a few minutes. I can appreciate a party being celebrated but not at the expense of the patrons in the restaurant. Also just a heads up- they add a 2.5% service charge to the bill. Only noticed this because the table seated next to us shared this and were upset by it.

We had originally wanted to go to Jacob's Pickles on the UWS, but surprise, no reservations available. I decided to find a new place in the general neighborhood, and I saw that the Yelp and Google reviews for TGF were uniformly excellent. So we gave it a try. The photos online are very flattering... IRL, the vibe comes closer to "hole in the wall" than upscale casual dining. There are only about 40 seats maximum in the whole restaurant. The kitchen is tiny- they could only handle one table at a time, although to be fair, we didn't have to wait very long for our order to be ready. But in retrospect, I understand why they maintain such appearances... because the food at The Grand Feast is so freakin' great, if they made the decor any more attractive, they would have lines down the block and there would be no way for the kitchen to keep up. The wait staff could not have been nicer or more attentive. Menu was varied and interesting and reasonably priced. Portions were generous. We started with a mushroom truffle risotto and Caesar salad, which we shared around the table. Both were delicious. The risotto was perfectly al dente, fragrant and cheesy and gone in about twenty seconds. The salad was crisp and fresh, and the dressing must have been homemade because it put store-bought versions to shame. For our main courses, I had the duck l'orange. Cooked a precise medium, tender and expertly seasoned. It was served with a butternut squash puree (my only complaint was that there was not enough of it on the plate), crispy tasty Brussels sprouts, and a sweet tangy sauce that made me want to lick the plate clean. My son had the lamb shank- it was HUGE, and fell off the bone like it had been slow cooked for 14 hours. My wife and daughter shared the dinner special- a tomahawk chop. It could easily have fed three people (and possibly four). They were rhapsodizing about it, so of course, I had to try it for myself. I say this without hyperbole- I have dined at virtually all of the best steakhouses in NYC. This tomahawk blew all of them out of the water. It literally melted in your mouth. You could effortlessly cut it with just a fork. The ideal blend and saturation of salt and pepper. Served with two sides- a gigantic bowl of crispy french fries and those yummy sprouts. Even with two people sharing, and the other two picking, fully a third of it made its way home with us. And then... the surprise. I'm not sure how it came about. Again, I told no one at the restaurant that it was my birthday when I made the reservation. No one in my family called ahead- they didn't even know where we were going. Someone must have overheard our table conversation, or it was some arcane magic that was responsible... but a crème brulee with candles was brought to the table, and Happy Birthday was piped over the house speakers, and I was serenaded by the staff and patrons. I really did not expect it, and I was so touched by the gesture. It was a gift. Oh, and the crème brulee was divine. As was the carrot cake and chocolate mousse that we ordered for dessert. Even my coffee was great, LOL. A fantastic way to end the meal. Now I know why TGF keeps things so low key. I'm sure that the residents of that particular neck of the woods must know full well about The Grand Feast... and I'm sure they hold this knowledge close to the vest, because why would they want to risk having this neighborhood treasure overrun by outsiders? In fact, pretend you didn't read this review. Because I want to be able to go back to The Grand Feast again, and again, and have it be as amazing as it was tonight.

The tuna salad with tuna was really good, and we loved the dressing. Wine bottle prices vary, ranging from reasonable to quite expensive. No wait staff, no hostess, nothing. Radio silence. I had to go back into the kitchen to ask a chef if someone was there. He ended up having to call the hostess. No clue where she was but it took her 10 minutes to come upstairs??? Then when she came I told her we have an 11am reservation. She was confused. Apparently they only open at 11:30?????? So why was I able to make a reservation for 11? Anyway, I had the avocado toast and it was good. For the first customers of the day they were already out of one of the desserts which didn't make any sense. I also had to ask for the check twice. Would I come back? Yes, just not first thing when they open.

The 4 course price fix dinner was really tasty and a great value. After the delicate salad with avocado and baby greens, you chose from 3 or 4 options for courses 2-4. I chose the butternut squash soup which was yummy although my son raved over the fried calamari (a customer favorite as I was told). My turkey dinner was everything I could have asked for. Large portions, a nice variety (roasted root veggies cooked to perfection (parsnips, sweet potatoes, carrots and Brussel sprouts, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce and gravy) and I appreciated that I was able to request all dark meat. I don't eat sweets but my family had one of each and had a hard time choosing their favorite. The service was still professional and friendly, but the food left something to be desired. Though it was a Thursday evening, the weather was not great, so it was not overly surprising that the restaurant was not very crowded. Because of that fact, the gracious hostess offered us our choice of a few different tables, from a larger booth to a two-top near the window. We opted for the booth that would give us a chance to look out into the restaurant AND to still see the Manhattan skyline. We decided to order some drinks, and I opted for an Espresso Martini, which was not typically something I would have gotten before dessert, but I wanted the extra caffeine! Plus, their version included a caramel cold foam, which enticingly made it extra creamy and delicious. In fact, it was definitely one of the best espresso martinis I had ever had. We were deciding to skip any starters, so we asked for some bread while we waited for our entrees. The plate of focaccia was decent and hit the spot, but we were charged $2 for it, which was not a big deal but also not appreciated. For my entree, I went with the Lobster Bouillabaisse. The broth was flavorful, but there was not much of it. In fact, the dish came with three sweet rolls to dip into the soup, but I could have lived with less given the limited amount of liquid in the bowl. The included blue prawns were good, but the Hokkaido scallops and lobster were chewy. There was also supposed to jumbo lump crab, which seemed to have been replaced by gritty clams. There were also leeks and Yukon potatoes that were sliced in small cylinders and looked fairly similar to each other. The potatoes were bland, cold, and under-cooked. Overall, it was not very impressive for $48. My companion's Prime Filet Mignon was of an unknown size on the menu, but arrived looking smaller than the typical 8-ounces. It was also over-cooked. He did like his mashed potatoes, though. For dessert, we decided to get the Apple and Pear Bread Pudding again, since that had been excellent last time and would hopefully be a redeeming feature of the meal, which it was. The sweet, caramelized brioche had been infused with cubes of fruit, baked, and drizzled with a sea salt caramel. We replaced the designated companion creme fraiche gelato with a scoop of passion fruit sorbet, which was less of an appropriate pairing, but more of an appealing variety to us. While Drift truly offered a stunning space with incredible service, they really could improve their culinary preparations.
