I believe they were closing in about 1.5 hours so we ordered as soon as possible and food just kept coming out since we ordered a lot. We ate, drank and talked so much we forgot to look at the time. They closed already but didn't rush us to leave at all. Sorry about that! I still do like the food here but there are a few dishes I didn't care for. First time here and this is a great place if you're craving for some skewers. They have plenty of meat to choose from and they cook it + season it for you. This place gives good casual vibes with quick service. They have good food that pairs well with the drinks and overall a good place for good times. Many of the dishes I ordered had chili oil and were a good level of spicy. The heat and the flavors were present in every dish! Next time I'll be sure to try the skewers. Ordered too many things with the same flavor profile: wish the waitstaff would have asked us if we were sure we wanted chili/white pepper 5 ways. And yet, still good. I am a frequent visitor of the barn, but I haven't been for around a month and came back to a few changes. The service and the ambiance was the same, but the prices have definitely inflated quite a bit since my last visit. I usually order the solid chicken gizzard, chicken cartilage, and pork bellys. We also ordered some beef and corn along with the green beans and the tofu and enoki wiz chili. The gizzards are usually consistent, but the cartilage have days where they use a different type. However, this day's cartilage was pretty delicious. The tofu and enoki are consistent as well. I was surprised that the corn that used to be sweet corn became more of a sticky/chewy corn. We also ordered the egg fried rice which felt like some meat flavors were infused which was tasty. I love how late they open. Good for groups and there's plenty of parking. The food here is super tasty and they have a variety late night types of food on their menu like skewers, hot pot, and rice dishes. I have such fond memories of this place! I had my second-date here with my now-fiancé. I've been back several times since and have still enjoyed it. They serve mainly beer food: skewers, corn cheese, some carbs. It's like a Chinese izakaya. Due to COVID, they have transitioned to a more non-contact mode of service. You scan a QR code at your table and order your food right there. I highly enjoy this as I don't have to stress about waving down people to take my order. Some of my favorites to get here: - chongqing noodles: spicy and numbing broth with thin rice noodles. It's counterintuitive but it's just so refreshing during the hot summer months! I'm not a huge fan of the numbing spice but theirs is slightly more tamed for people like me but still has that nice kick. I can't say it's the most authentic version, but I personally prefer it this way. -fish tofu skewers: sounds like nothing special but it's probably my favorite skewer. I love the chewy bite of a fish tofu (I normally eat this in hot pot), and at the Barn, they season it with their special spices and it is OUT OF THIS WORLD. It's fairly spicy to me, but I can't get enough - corn cheese: I have to say these aren't the best corn cheese ever, but I'm a sucker for corn cheese and I order this every time. The Barn has a lot of spicy options and I get this dish to help cool my mouth down. It's slightly above mediocre but I enjoy it nonetheless. - marinated cucumber: super flavorful spicy numby marinated cucumbers to wet your appetite. The kale fried rice was incredibly oily, essentially soaking in oil at the bottom. The skewers tasted mediocre, nothing amazing I can't get anywhere else or do at home. While the servers are nice, they seem understaffed. We had to bring the check to the counter and ask for staff because we didn't want to wait any longer to leave. The food here is OK (feel like food quality went down a bit in past few years) and I used to like coming here for a chill night with skewers and a nice cold glass of beer. I've heard good things about this place. I wanted something grilled.... so against my better judgment, we decided to get skewers from this place.... to go. We ordered lamb, beef and chicken thigh skewers. We also wanted the pork belly skewers, but they were out. =( We also ordered the grilled corn skewers, gyudon bowl, and kimchi fried rice. We brought it home and opened everything up. Everything still appeared hot, so we started to dig in. The kimchi fried rice was okay.... nothing to rave about. The gyudon bowl came with a poached egg which made it good, but half of the bowl was covered with steamed/grilled vegetables. Where's all my beef?! Not the typical gyudon bowl.... it tasted okay, but I was disappointed with the veges. While eating the rice, we also ate the skewers together. The extra cumin powder and the red pepper made the lamb very flavorful. The beef and chicken were pretty good too. They didn't meet my expectations. The corn was good too, but still not what I expected. Just to be fair, I think I have to visit the restaurant when COVID-19 completely settles down and try the skewers again right off the grills. I loved dining in at this place before these circumstances, so I was really happy to hear they were open to outdoor seating. I checked in from the front and was told to go to the back for seating. They have had several tables set up under a tent in the back parking lot. We were provided cumin and chili powder in small cups. We were so excited to eat, we ordered a lot of food. Lamb: 5/5 This was really delicious and had a good amount of melt-in-the-mouth fat. The flavor not too gamey, which I loved! Beef tongue: 4/5 This came in a plate of several slices of beef tongue in a bed of cooked onions. The beef tongue was a bit overcooked to my liking because it was dry and not very tender, although the flavor was still pretty good. However, I understand that due to current circumstances it is a little harder to keep it cooked tender because, before COVID, they would cook the beef tongue right in front of you so we were able to experience the tenderness of the tongue right off the grill. Chicken cartilage: 5/5 This was crunchy and filled with amazing flavor! This cartilage was so delicious! Beef: 4/5 The beef wasn't as tender as I hoped it to be. It was rather hard to chew, but the flavor was still there and still enjoyable! Squid head & legs: 4/5 It was a bit bland to my liking, but I really enjoyed the crispiness of the legs. Intestines: 5/5 THESE WERE AMAZING! This was probably my favorite order. We were given cut up large intestines in a bed of chili. Quail eggs: 3/5 These quail eggs were a bit lacking in flavor. Also, I like my egg to be more moist, but the inside of these eggs was a bit dry. Cheese corn: 3/5 As a huge fan of cheese, this dish was disappointing due to the lacking amount of cheese on the corn. I was hoping there would be more, but there wasn't enough to cover all the corn. I still liked the sweet corn though. It was delicious, but I would've liked more cheese on it. Chicken heart 2/5 I didn't like the strong gamey taste of the heart. Some items are better than others. The good: Pork belly was excellent, thin and crispy. Chicken leg/thigh excellent. Fish tofu/cake was the best item. Cauliflower and zucchini I'd get again. Went on Tuesday night before the restaurants had to stop doing outdoor dining again. It's sad that they had to again cause they are SUPER clean with the place. I saw them using a UV gun with cleaner attached and they sprayed everything before touching it to throw stuff out and again after clearing and wiping. And I mean they sprayed everything! I felt very safe! The food itself is soo good still. And getting it hot is the best. But my favorite thing is the spicy fern noodles. Cant get them anywhere else and they're amazing!
