I have eaten here many times. The food is good, the location outstanding, but the prices afford more refined service than is presented. I ate at the Back Eddie this week with 7 girl friends. The service was fast, however the wait staff never knew who got what. When you have $26 + entrees, the staff should not have to ask where each one goes. It should also come out at the same time, there was not a big gap, but we sat wondering - was I the only one who for an appetizer? Only to have two minutes go by and the rest of the salads were delivered. In short polish the service and it will get more stars. Great striped bass ceviche. read more

This is where we take family and friends when they come to visit. You had me at seaside marina atmosphere, but it's more than that. The food is excellent and consistent. That's all I ask for as I'm sure most people are the same. I actually always get the same thing. The fried scallops are very lightly friend I want to ask for pan seared but I'm sure they couldn't taste any better. There are always fresh and plenty of them. I use to count them but I don't anymore because I know there will be plenty to even share. My husband and friends always rave about there dishes too. Desserts are soso. The only reason I go is for the atmosphere... where the limited bar on the dock is pretty awesome, that's the only thing i've enjoyed there. The young and extremely in-experienced waitstaff is not something to be desired when you've waited for an hour for table in the extremely lound dining area. If you don't like seafood... don't go here! There are only maybe two-three things that aren't seafood on the menu... and they include "pulled pork" or "half a chicken"... not even a soup?! And even those items are waaaaay over-priced! It took a half hour just to get our appetizers, and it wasn't even that busy? I had to talk my friend into not walking out?! And the bar staff indoors are rude!!!! I've had the same two bar tenders inside a few times... and they need an attitude check!! So heard good things about the place and decided to go for a lunch. Restaurant has a decent view if you're on the back deck, but if you're more than 4 you don't get to sit out. Badly designed sitting arrangement, tables are too close to each other. Going to food: started with their lobster bisque, Horrible . We were told it has creamy texture and when tried it had a buttery/oily texture and no flavor of lobster. Fish sandwich was below average, served with worst pickle I have had. Great seafood!! I frequently eat at Back Eddy when i'm in Westport throughout the summer. The food here is fresh and great. I often get the scallops, but will try anything on their menu with no hesitation. My wife absolutely loves their mussels and will eat nothing else when we go there because she enjoys them so much The restaurant has a great deck on the ocean out back which also has a cash bar on it that is fantastic on nice nights. If you are in the area, I highly recommend Back Eddy as it is a fantastic seafood restaurant!! read more

While I've only been to the Back Eddy twice, the two visits were about 4 years apart and the experiences were identical. Upon first glance, you'd think a visit to the Back Eddy would be a five star experience. Great decor, plenty of seating, gorgeous water views, convenient parking and fresh seafood options on the menu. However, if you've ever dined OUTSIDE of the Westport area, I think you'll find that the Back Eddy feels a bit like a rip-off. The prices are very high for such a casual atmosphere. The acoustics in the space mean you have to yell through your entire meal. The waitstaff uniforms are equivalent to what you'd expect at a beach shack. There is only one menu for lunch or dinner and the entree options are very heavy for lunch time eating. They do offer a whopping 3 sandwiches......one of which is a hot dog. um, no thank you! Oysters, mussels, tuna. Do it. This is one of the very few places in this area where you can eat on the water. Even if you're just going for a drink, the view alone is worth the visit. The restaurant has a very casual beach vibe to it. We went the weekend before Halloween and the staff were all participating in a pretty impressive costume contest. My vote was for the jellyfish costume our waitress said her 4 yr old was the mastermind of. Streamers and cellophane - I'll have to keep that one in my back pocket. Our party had something north of two dozen oysters. They didn't have a selection of oysters to choose from, but the one variety they had were plenty tasty. Solid wine list and killer asian fusion muscles. The standout for me was definitely the japanese style tuna that they served with house cured kimchi. Since moving to Boston, I've had a difficult time finding good sushi. While this tuna was lightly seared, it was the closest I've had to good fresh raw tuna in Mass. It is definitely on the pricey side for a casual seafood restaurant. I think I expected the check to be on the smaller side just by the fact that this is a more residential part of the coast and the restaurant itself was so casual. If the restaurant were in a city and the atmosphere kicked up a step or two I think the prices would be totally fair. Still a great option if you happen to be in the area. read more

This place could be great---the location is nice, but unfortunately they do nothing to even let you know there is a body of water near you. The server made it a point to tell me that I was "early" for outdoor seating because they didn't seat until 5pm outdoors....I arrived at 4:56pm, along with some other parties. I was told that I could go to their bar outside but I could NOT sit down outside. The menu is painfully small and overpriced. The stuffies, while tasty are very small and expensive. The waitstaff was slow, and seemed to not want to be there. I'm probably overly biased to RI waterfront dining establishments, to fairly assess this place, but the back eddy comes across with a "you should kiss our feet that we have a deck and fish sandwiches" attitude. The one star is for the view. Won't be coming back to this place. Don't waste your money here. If you want a drink, head to buzzards bay brewing a few miles down the road. read more

The appetizers were my favorite part of the meal! My group ordered the stuffies, steamies and the mussels. They were all fantastic! The mussels were steamed in coconut milk and spices. Very different from traditional mussels, but some of the best I have ever tried! We then ordered the swordfish, BBQ Pork and scallop special. I've been here a few times now, and I really want to love it....but I can't. Yes, the location is great, and makes for an easy jaunt over to Horseneck to walk off lunch while enjoying the beach, and the decor and water views are pretty and relaxing, but here's where they fail: Hostess/Wait: We visited this past Sunday, September 28th. It was a gorgeous day, and everyone knew for days that it was going to be a stellar afternoon. So, why...why?! wouldn't a popular restaurant, on the water, with outdoor seating, plan their staffing accordingly?? There was a "35 minute" wait for a table, with 70% of the restaurant empty. (See picture below, taken as we sat down.) The hostess was frazzled, the MOD was a mess and the wait staff looked miserable. When we finally got our table, about 45 minutes later, the hostess threw our menus on the table, and ran away, without even taking away two chairs that needed to be removed in order to fit the two highchairs that she had brought over. Sure, let the woman holding a baby move your furniture for you. I can only imagine what the service is like on a weekend in July. Ugh. Food: Kids mac and cheese was served in a watery cheese sauce. Neither child would touch it, as the real cheddar flavor was a bit overpowering, even for us adults. I appreciate the attempt at not serving Kraft from a box, as most restaurants do, but the recipe needs to be a bit more kid-friendly. I ordered the fish and chips, which were dryer than the sandy shores down the road. Small portion of fish, nothing positively memorable, actually. My sister ordered the clam tenders, which would have been delicious, had it not been for the 12 cloves of garlic they used in cooking them. It's really unfortunate, because the clams were moist and tender, but the garlic was just ridiculously overwhelming and unnecessary. By the way, I wish Yelp would let me review the weather in CA, so I could stick it once again to the natives back East... we've had 5 straight days of rain in San Jose, but I haven't slipped on ice once. I'm mildly ashamed to use it) actually care whether you're happy, and the cod dish with green olives is always perfect. Our first experience at The Back Eddy was supper yesterday evening, with two friends who had also not been there before. In short, it was really fantastic...in all honesty, it was substantially better than we'd expected when we walked in. At first glance, it looked like something one sees a lot in New England in the summer; a big, crowded fried seafood restaurant that screams "you'll be disappointed". When we arrived (about 15 minutes early) a table was ready, but we asked if we could wait for something with a view, which came available within 15 or 20 minutes. The bar area where we waited was quite big and very crowded, but, surprisingly, the crowd was incredibly polite, given all the jostling that's going to go on with that many people crowded in, and the service was fast and friendly. When we got to our table, overlooking the water, our server showed up quickly, offered great advice on cocktails (I went with an old standard...the sparking wine offering from Westport Rivers Vineyard, which is about 5 miles away) and appetizers. As someone who grew up in RI, I chuckled when the server called the stuffies (stuffed quahogs) "excellent", because they're one of those items that every restaurant who serves them calls "excellent", but almost none are...but, these were. They were so good we ordered a second round....to go with the second dozen oysters. The entrees kept up the high standards that surprised us in the appetizer round; I got a Portuguese-style baked cod with lima beans and chourico that was just wonderful. Everything showed up quickly and all the fish had the texture that said it hadn't been frozen...an increasing rarity. By the time dessert rolled around I was about ready to be rolled out of the restaurant, but we all split a fabulous cake that really rounded out the evening. I think I've grown a bit jaded by certain types of restaurants, especially (fried) fish places in Southeastern New England, but I'm really pleased to say The Back Eddy beat the trend; it really was just excellent and I would highly recommend it. read more

Nothing spectacular that I couldn't make better myself at home with basic ingredients. Cost $80 with tip. The chowder was the best in my opinion but it was a thin chowder and I like mine richer/thicker. Crab cakes okay but too salty. Tuna salad pretentious and bland (canned tuna?). wine overpriced but drinkable. You pay for the scenery and beautiful marina setting. This is at least our 7th straight season going o see Aaron and his gang at the Back Eddy. Once again, we brought a couple that has never been there before and as expected, they were delighted. Stuffed Clams- The chorizo is such an awesome touch that I had 4, and I dont usually eat clams Swordfish- Moist, seasoned perfectly while keeping its natural flavor Grilled Ribeye- warm pink in the middle, delicious Beautiful sunset so we enjoyed a pre dinner cocktail on the dock. Well, the sun finally broke here in Southeastern Mass and instead of Seattle in March, it felt a little like Mass in the summer. Of course, my immediate reaction was an uncontrollable urge to eat somewhere on the water. This was my second time to the Eddy and have to say I was once again impressed by the food. PEI Mussels were great last time and they are still amazing. Tried the Scallop Ceviche and another Scallop app off their special menu and continued to be impressed. The Swordfish entree special was very good and I highly recommend wrapping it all up with the chocolate chip sliders. I'd say that the food alone, makes the Eddy one of the best spots to hit on the Southcoast, but the kicker is that it's right in Westport Harbor - absolutely idyllic. I think the atmosphere is great. Good blend of families and people out for a good time. There's also a good variety of people dressed extremely casually and others who are auditioning for a spot in the next Vineyard Vines catalog. (So come as you are or how you're comfortable) I found the service to be ok and wouldn't necessarily consider that a strong point. Overall - I recommend you make a trip to the Back Eddy. The Back Eddy used to be my absolute favorite restaurant. Unfortunately, the last two times I've been, the service has been borderline awful and the food seemed "lazy." Went last week with my wife and daughter. We sat quickly (they have two hostesses and only two servers on the bar side that we saw) but waited for 25 minutes (from when I started looking at my watch) until we were able to order a beverage. My daughter is 3, I have no idea why they sat us in a table directly next to the bar--in a corner with people so wasted they were basically falling over and/or screaming at each other. Anyway, I'm bummed that the service was bad from the start, (it actually turned quite okay once we started going though the progressions) but we really came for the food--I love New England Regional cuisine and this has always been "my spot!" I ordered striped bass ($28) with a version of ratatouille. It was maybe a four to five ounce piece of fish at $28--weird. The vegetables were just huge pieces of over-cooked mush--think mirepoix for stock! The last time I was there I ordered the roasted cod fish--it was basically poached--so the striper was actually very good and actually cooked properly--but the veggies were uninspired, kind of a "lets just throw some of this with it." The deviled eggs were terrific, as were the stuffed clams. The food as a whole however just seems to be made with no passion. I understand the restaurant's culture is to be relaxing and do simple food perfectly--it's just not happening anymore. I know it's fun for the cook's to have a tv and be offered a "kitchen appreciation pitcher" of beer--it's just not sending the right message to the guests when service is poor and the food looks lazy--just makes the place look and feel like a poorly managed "typical" restaurant--why waste all the money on nice local ingredients if that is how you will manage them? Anyway, best of luck Back Eddy--I'll be back to try it again. Made our annual visit to Horseneck Beach and Back Eddy for early dinner (445pm) on a summer Sunday. Able to get seated right away. Loud & got louder as got full. Still feel their food is excellent. She had scallops and loved them. I am vegetarian and they no longer have a vegetarian platter. And no other such entree. I just ordered side dishes and they were excellent, again. The place is not cheap, but I do not think there are tons of options nearby. But we find the food to be special. Peeve: our first table was hot immediately upon arrival and we were able to switch. Even though on the water w windows open, they only had one ceiling fan for too large of an area near us, so if not near it, hot. read more

For some time now, Horseneck beach in Westport has been my favorite way to spend a beach day. Every time we drive out there I have noticed The Back Eddy from the road, but we have never given it a try for some reason. I decided that it was time. So after a beautiful day at the beach we drove over and strolled on in. The dining room was very large, with a bar off to the side and tons of natural light from the windows. I noticed that there was a back deck overlooking the bay so we asked to be seated outside. The seating was right on the dock over the water. There was an outdoor bar and outdoor raw bar as well as a courtesy dock for boaters who wanted to pop in and grab a quick bite or drink. The entrees looked a little pricey but not out of reach. We were going to a party later so we just ordered some beers and steamers. The steamers were great, the beer was cold, the service was friendly and the view was beautiful. After we finished our food we paid the bill and walked over to the outside raw bar where we grabbed a couple of local oysters which were shucked right in front of us out on the dock. They also had this massive smoked bass next to the raw bar that must have been about four feet long! We really enjoyed finding this place. I can not speak to the rest of the menu, but this is a GREAT spot to grab a beer and some appetizers after a day at the beach when the salt is still fresh in your hair. I come here about once or twice every summer for one thing, and one thing only. Their signature roasted corn and clam chowder! It is my absolute favorite. Its not super thick and chunky but more of a cream based broth packed with tons of flavor. Unless your really into seafood and don't mind spending the cash on it then you wont mind the prices here but I have to agree with the other folks, their pricing is way too high for what you're really getting.. I'm assuming that its because they are only open in the summer and the location is prime. The pulled pork sandwich is also worth a try. read more

Great attentive service gets a 4 star but the food on this visit and 2 other occasions that I have been over the past 2 years has been a big 0. Today, it was busy there were empty tables and I requested one of those near window but was told those are reserved by management. The prices are outrageous! $20. For fish n chips that were just average size portion, the fish was dry, told it was Cod after I asked because it was an unusual cut and shape to it... I believe it was Blue fish, I understand what cod means so just tell me it's blue fish duh, the grease it was fried in was dirty the fish and fries had a bitter burnt taste. My son thought the fries were sweet potato fries because of the color and the fact that everything was over fried and tasted all the same. This is the "real deal" for fish and shellfish. My brother-in-law used to be a fish buyer for restaurants and he says this is the best. After going their for dinner, I have to agree. We had a before dinner drink on the deck to watch the sunset, and then followed with a fabulous dinner. I had the best bacon-wrapped scallops that I have ever eaten. And we were fortunate to visit when they were having a fishing tournament so we got to see all the catch, and hear the tales from the fisherman. They have no luncheon menu. ......So if you want a dinner entree for lunch, or one of their 3 "sandwiches": Fried Fish, Hot Dog or Pull Pork, go. They actually eat the food on the menu and can make recomendations. The Taylor Bay Scallops are incredible. My wife and I have always had a good time here. The back eddy is one of my families favorites... yet they haven't quite proven to me why yet. We have been here quite a few times for celebrations, and each time I am not as pleased as I expect to be. However, because of the family enjoyment, and multiple other positive factors (Decor, environment, authenticity), I am gonna stick with my gut feeling in rating this a 4 because they certainly deserve it. It is located right on the harbor, and just a moments walk from the beautiful Horseneck Beach. It is out on a dock and you are surrounded by boats, serenity, and is set up for an unbelievable sunset (facing the West). The inside is dock/barnlike with wooden everything, and beautiful wood floors. The decor is simple, yachty/fishy, but not tacky or sophisticated. They have a great bar area to grab a few drinks while you wait for a table. The menu is primarily seafood, with the only option of an expensive steak, or chicken for those who don't like pesce. The menu is quite extensive and you know that the food you are eating LITERALLY came right off the boat. I like that in a restaurant. The past two times I came here, I got the swordfish.. which I found to be extremely fresh, HUGE ample portions, and cooked just right. My mom said her's was too well done, but I am not as picky I guess. Everyone else at the table was impressed with their meals (Fish and Chip sandwich, gumbo soup, tuna, shrimp, stuffies). Annie got the mac and cheese which was definitely the best restaurant made mac and cheese I have ever had. The cab that I got was amazing. My two biggest complaints about here that have been persistent the past two times I came here, are the bread (which is a MAJOR loss of points for me) and the service. (If you don't care about these two, then stop reading) Firstly, the bread. Actually, the bread and service go hand in hand for BOTH times that I came here recently. The first time I came, they served us cornbread. I HATE cornbread. I asked the waitress if there was any other type of bread, and she rudely said no.Later, I saw another table get a very nice looking loaf, that WASN'T cornbread. After a few drinks were in me, I mentioned this to the waitress, in which she rudely implied that I would NOT be able to get anything but cornbread. This next time I again, saw someone with a baguette of bread. I was determined to convince my waitress that we were allowed to have it. When asking, she said she had cornbread, and for an extra charge we could have a baguette. Like what?!? Is a baguette REALLY that much more expensive then cornbread? So we told her to bring both loaves over. Ten minutes pass.... no bread. My dad asks for the bread, the round of waters, and the beer that we had been waiting on (it wasn't even that busy). She runs over and brings the cornbread directly to me. We couldn't even ASK about the baguette since she ran away, to the point where my mom said, "wow she definitely has 'tude". Again, another ten minutes pass before we see her and ask about the baguette. It comes. It is 4, 1/4 inch slices of a baguette which we later find costs us $4.00. I think she new she did a bad job since we only had a party of 5 and 18% gratuity was included. Lesson learned, do not expect to have good bread, or cheap bread when coming here (unless you want cornbread). Otherwise, I highly highly recommend this for a fancy date night, a dinner with the in-laws, or a stop by for an app after the beach. read more

I came here with my parents as they are fans and we wanted to eat within close proximity to the water. The food was absolutely delicious, I had a fantastic salad with grilled chicken (that was cooked PERFECTLY.) It seemed there was an anniversary party occurring that same evening so our waitress seemed a bit low on patience but then again who knows what kind of day she was having. Definitely a great place for a date, evening out with friends or family - I saw a bit of each scanning the dining room. I like that they have an outdoor bar open up later in the day in addition to a large seating area down below and walking on the dock on beautiful days is a plus. I'm a big fan of the Westport area and this restaurant is a wonderful way to round out a visit.. The Back Eddy provides the rare opportunity to take in the sunset from MA and sits right on the water. In fact, if you own a boat you can anchor to have dinner or sit on the back dock for a drink. The menu sports local ingredients and brews and has the best fries around. I typically get the fresh fish of the day or the Oven Roasted Cod. On weekends there is typically a wait and the main dining room can get really noisy. read more

My boyfriend and I went here for the first time tonight and honestly it was a little disappointing. The prices were pretty high in comparison to the quality of the food served. For an appetizer I got clam chowder. Now last time I checked a chowder was thick cream based, well chowder. This "chowder" had the consistency of chicken noodle soup. The flavor wasn't bad per se, but I have never had a chowder that consistency before and it made the overall satisfaction rather bland. For entrees I ordered the Crab and Cod Cakes from the appetizers because I wasn't too hungry and my boyfriend got the Classic Fish and Chips. Now I know appetizers are smaller than entrees and as I wasn't too famished I didn't mind;however, my meal was about $12 and it came with 2 small half dollar sized cakes. They were good but for that price and the size I would have expected at least 3 maybe 4. My boyfriends Fish and Chips were mediocre nothing special and probably weren't worth the $20. Lastly, was the dessert we had the Buttermilk Chocolate Cake. Sounds decadent but was sadly off the rocker. It was quite dry and tasted like an ordinary boxed cake recipe so wasn't anything to brag about. It was also that weird hot/warm temperature and considering it was a slice we knew it got nuked. All things considered it does have a great atmosphere and friendly staff and though I wouldn't recommend the food, I would definitely recommend it as a good place to grab a drink and look out on the ocean! read more

We called for reservations for 5:30, arrived on time to a mobbed restaurant and were shown to our table immediately. Service was fast and efficient with all specials being described in detail. Seafood for 5 of our party of 6 was outstanding with a few items a bit pricy. One of our group was a meat eater and if you don't enjoy seafood, your alternative choices are limited. Her steak was so-so and a bit fatty. The other 5 of us had seafood and all rated the food a 5 on a scale of 1-5. The only negative was the place was incredibly loud and we had a rectangular table for the 6 of us. People at one end of the table had to shout to converse with folks at the other end. If we went again, we'd try to get a round table. If not available, this place is more suited to parties of 2 or 4. The waterfront location offers a nice view during dinner. We'll eat there again. One of my wife and my favorite restaurants on the whole south coast of Massachusetts. The swordfish, scollops and rib-eye steak are all absolutely fantastic. Excellent staff and great waterfront location. A really special place. read more
