I have been taking my car to The Auto Station for more than 10 years because They are so nice, they always explain things so that I can understand what is going on, They are very reasonably priced, and they never fail to get the job done right! Yesterday the mechanics at discount tire shared two Lugnuts off my wheels balancing and rotating the tires. They said it was safe to drive, but I really wanted to get it repaired before I made The two hour trip home to Canyon city. I called today at 8 AM and asked them if there was any chance they could do the job for me today between 11 and 1230. I fully expected them to say sorry but we're booked solid. I was elated when Kevin said they'd have to take a look at it, but they could probably handle it today. I sat in the waiting room by their Christmas tree with real presents under it and was greeted by their beautiful and friendly dog. Within an hour my Lug nuts had been replaced. I started with a couple things, then another couple things my car needed and when they were done, I got a car I can really count on for another for another year or so of abuse. For example, they quoted me nearly $500 to replace a mass air sensor for a Nissan Altima, I did it myself for $25 and 10 minutes of my time. This is the most dishonest mechanic I have ever experienced in my life. They've had our car for over a month. Our car is worth $2500. They allowed the bill to climb to $4890 blaming us for "approving the repairs". We aren't mechanics. What I expect from a professional is to say, "hey, this looks really bad. You may want to consider other options." Instead, our bill climbed from $400, to $2300, to $4300 each time they called...We were told the car was in pieces and they kept finding issues. The Auto Station concludes with a transmission rebuild for approximately $4,200 and buying a different transmission would be about $5,000 -$6,000. I said let me think about it. I called a transmission shop just a few miles from the Auto Station and they said at worst it would be $2,800. We're back and forth to Colorado several times a year, and always use these guys when we have issues while we're there. The owner is as knowledgeable about cars as anyone I have ever met, and the techs that he hires all seem to be top-notch. I'm not a car guy - I have passing knowledge of them, at best. The true test of a place like this is how they treat you when they know you are over your head. We have now had two occasions in which we had issues diagnosed at other shops, after experiencing problems on the drive out to Denver. Then, taking it to Japanese Specialists upon our arrival in town, we've discovered the problems to be far less complicated (and thus, far less expensive) than we had originally been quoted. If those experiences don't lock down your trust in an auto mechanic, nothing will. Walk in for a tire fill and repair due to a screw I hit. They were prompt and quick about it, which was great. However, I wish more of them had been wearing masks when dealing with customers. I understand not wearing it when it's just the workers (I do the same around my coworkers that I'm around for hours at a time), but it would've made me more comfortable had they worn them, as I seemed to be the only person complying with mask mandates. Luckily, it was nice outside, so I just waited outside. Things not being the way they are with Covid, in the before times, I would recommend this place strongly, but if you or a family member are high risk, maybe best to go somewhere you feel more comfortable. read more

I contacted Japanese Specialists Auto based on a recommendation from a complete stranger. This woman and I struck up a conversation while I was helping her at work, and discovered that we both had 2005 Honda Elements. I asked her where she serviced her car (she LOVES her car, so her recommendation would hold a lot of weight in my book) and she told me Japanese Specialists. When it was time to give our Element its 100K service, I knew exactly who I'd call. I was nervous about how much it would cost, because we'd skipped the 60K and 75K services - terrible, I know! But after speaking with both Ryan and Alan on two separate phone calls, they both told me that, barring any unforeseen repairs, it should cost about $50- for the oil change. It turns out that regular inspections like this one are free of charge! I felt confident in their quote because they both took the time on our phone calls to look up all the check points required in a 100K service. Wow! I scheduled an appointment for a day off, having been quoted the inspection and oil change would take about an hour, but any other items that needed addressing could add to my time. Understandable. I arrived on time, and they checked me in right away. I had my dog in tow, and they immediately asked if he could have a treat! They have complimentary beverages for humans, and biscuits for our furry babies :) :) I LOVE pet friendly businesses! After about 45 minutes, the owner, Alan, approached me with the results of our diagnostic tests. There was one critical repair to my car, and one that could wait, and wait.... and another that they would need 1/2 a day to fix, but was purely cosmetic (we have a lightbulb out in the dash console and it requires removing the entire console to fix it). Alan was patient while I asked him questions about costs, including labor, and asked him to put the remaining repairs in order of priority. He told me that he only thought it crucial to fix the one critical repair (a sway bar had cracked on our suspension). He suggested that sometime in the next "3 months to a year" we flush the break fluid, but it's not at all urgent. I asked my age old "what would you tell your daughter" question, and his answer didn't change. Just do the sway bar. I was satisfied. So, I authorized the repair to the sway bar, and waited for my car to be done. During this time, both Alan, his wife, and several of their staff offered my dog several more treats and pets - he became their BEST friend - and kept me informed with updates of how much longer it would be to fix my car. My dog ended up laying on the front door floor mat as a mascot, greeting every customer who came through the door. They even suggested that I could let him off leash to roam around in the waiting area! (I couldn't because he would bolt out an open door, but the offer was so kind!) After about 3 hours, my car was finally done. And the cost came in as estimated - but I had done the math wrong in my head and it was so much cheaper! For an oil change, sway bar, and several light bulbs, my 100K service only cost me $215!!! I cannot believe that on a 10 year old car that my husband and I admittedly don't take the best care of, that it was so CHEAP! I will definitely, DEFINITELY be returning to Japanese Specialists, and have already recommended them to two of my friends who are suffering car troubles. I cannot speak highly enough of JS. They are committed to excellence, customer service, and honesty, and when repairing and/or maintaining your vehicle there are no more important things to me. I love, love, love this place!! These guys are the most honest mechanics I have ever met. The place I was getting my oil changed told me I needed new shocks and struts... I decided to get some other estimates for the work as it was not going to be cheap. Japanese Specialists was the lowest bid and then after they looked at it they said it did not need to be fixed immediately and we would just keep an eye on it periodically! How great is that!! And, I am glad I didn't fix it then because the car is starting to develop other major issues so it's actually time for a new car. I've been coming to Japanese Specialists for years. They have worked on at least three of my vehicles, everything from oil changes to clutch replacements. I have always been satisfied with their work! I went in for my regular oil change back in March was surprised to see the waiting area had leather chairs, there was new tile and lighting... I'm thinking to myself, what's going on here? Why is it so clean? Found out shortly thereafter that the former owner, Randy (whom I had grown to know and trust throughout the years) had sold the company, retired, and moved to AZ! I had a minor meltdown, what on earth am I going to do?! ! I love and trust this mechanic! He has never steered me wrong! EEK! I recently took my FX35 into Mike Ward Infiniti for my 75k checkup and to fix or trouble shoot a noise that I was hearing. They replaced a ton of things changed my oil (which the vehicle didn't need) and charged me $2,000-ish. I drove away happy until I noticed the noise was still there! I returned to Mike Ward twice to trouble shoot the noise, finally they determined it was coming from the muffler, they wanted to replace the whole muffler to the tune of $900-ish. I told them I would think about it. I knew I had to take my car back to Japanese Specialists. I took it in and within 15 minutes (it may have been shorter but I stumbled over to the dollar store, which I wouldn't recommend to anyone) Byrd was able to tell me, and show me, what the problem was, how much it was going to be to repair, and when they could get the parts in. Ahhhh.... This is service! The new owners are young and knowledgeable, they are in a position to put some money into the shop and make it a better place for my vehicle, their employees, and the community. I recently took my sons Mazda Speed 6 to Japanese Specialist for what I thought was a possible bad u joint. After a thorough evaluation by Matt they discovered that the u joint was fine however two bolts holding the suspension to the rear end had been sheared off. They're good at figuring out problems and they don't oversell you on solutions. My neighbor recommended this auto service. My car was shaking over 65 mph and my boyfriend said it most likely needed balanced. After spending a couple of hours there, I was told I needed new tires "as soon as possible because they are at or below minimum specification" and also new brakes including having 1 rotor resurfaced, all totaling $ 1,461. I told my boyfriend afterwards & he laughed.. he showed my the treads on my tires which had plenty of life left to them. I then took my car to Weaver Auto a couple of days later. He not only saw me the same day I called, he said the brakes & tires are fine and all the car needed was the tires rotated and to be balanced... a total of $64. I am not sure if The Auto Station takes advantage of all women who walk in there by themselves but I'm shocked that this behavior exists in 2021 where reviews are readily available. Nothing major, but they called me to verify the service and called back later with the invoice total. I was able to pick it up after hours - very smooth and stress free. They held on to my car for 11 days, almost 2 weeks. According to the work report, all they did was fix some corroded wires, and it took them 11 days. They called me once near the beginning to tell me what they were doing, but then they never called me again. I called them after several days to check the status of my car and they hung up on me. I called back and they didn't pick up the phone. I called back again 30 minutes later and they hung up on me again. I went over as soon as I could to see what the heck they were doing with my car and they said that they just needed an hour to put the trimming back on. If it was ready, then why didn't they call me? A few days after I got my car back, it started having the exact same problems that I brought it in for. They didn't fix my car. They just charged me $270 to hold on to it for 11 days. They didn't fix my car and they had terrible customer service hanging up on me when I called them. I am never taking my car in there again, and now I need to find a different auto repair shop to fix the same problem that I brought it into The Auto Station for. read more

Textbook failure. Stereotypical upsell to over $1,000 invoice. Caused over $7,500 in damages. Refused to remedy. They worked harder covering up their dishonesty and incompetence than they did fixing the problem. Only use if you have the mechanical background to verify the work. TW Prognosis: Valve gasket leak 1 qt. between oil changes. Requested installation of new gaskets, PCV filter, plugs, & wires. Shop Diagnosis, upsell: Add $270.24 to invoice. Replace unrelated thermostat and clamps. 1k miles, oil light warning. Added 3 qt., shop found no problems. 1k more miles, no oil on dipstick. Shop found no problems, added 3 qt. Highlights of 4 visits over 7 weeks 1 Failed to locate & replace the PCV filter, billed on invoice. 2 TW: The oil light came on after 1k miles, I added 3 qt. Tech: Oil change company's guys are idiots. This engine requires 4-6 quarts of oil. TW: So the owner's manual is wrong at 3.5 quarts? Tech: Yes, they are wrong. Service Writer: (looking up details on computer) It is 3.5 quarts. Tech: (Looking at computer) Oh, I guess it is 3.5 quarts. That doesn't matter anyway. 3 Service Writer: We don't see how the car has gone through 3 qts. We'll top it off for you free of charge. Bring it back when your next oil change & we will look at it then. TW: How am I going to make it to 3k miles when it goes through 85% of the oil in 1k miles? Service Writer: Keep an eye on it. TW: Could you show me the replaced PCV filter? Service Writer: (Searching) I think it is behind the valve covers, maybe on the engine block. Let me get back to you. (5-10 mins) It's behind the alternator, against the engine. I don't have time to show you. 4 GM: I don't see anywhere that your car is leaking 3 quarts of oil since it left my shop. What you need is a $51 oil treatment to reseat the rings. TW: Now that you've steam cleaned all the oil off, you're telling me it isn't leaking oil? GM: Yes, the problem is inside the engine; you see, it is a process of elimination. TW: How can the car have an internal oil problem when the outside of the engine was covered in oil? GM: You see, the rings inside the engine get out of whack. This will loosen them up & let them reseat by your next oil change. TW: So you're saying that my car wasn't burning oil before, but is now? GM: Yes TW: How is that possible that it wasn't burning oil before it came into your shop, but after leaving it started hemorrhaging oil through the engine? GM: I'm not going to have a circular argument with you. TW: The 2nd time I was here, the tech said it was beginning to leak oil at the front & rear main seals & the head gasket. The 3rd time I was here the tech said there was so much oil everywhere it was hard to tell where it was coming from. Now you're saying the car isn't leaking oil, but burning it? GM: Yes, that's what this treatment will help stop. -- TW: Can you show me the new PCV filter? GM: Yes, it is back here somewhere, on the valve covers. GM to Tech: Hey, can you come over here & show me the PCV filter? Tech: It is on top of the valve covers. GM: It is actually underneath the valve covers. TW: So you can't show it to me? GM: You can't see it without taking off the valve covers. TW: (placing finger on PCV filter on top of intake manifold) What is this? GM: I don't know, that's not the PCV filter. GM to Tech: Hey, come back over here & tell me what this is. Tech: I can't tell. GM: Isn't that the brake booster? Tech: No, it is a coolant hose. TW: So you're telling me is if you take that hose off, we will find coolant? GM: Yep. TW: Can you show me? GM: I don't know why. (Removing the hose clip) I guarantee this is not the PCV filter. We will find coolant. (Hose pops off) Huh? There is no coolant. TW: What is it? GM: An empty hose, with oil residue. Let me do some research & get back to you. (15 mins) Sir that was the old PCV filter. I'm going to go get one & put it on your car, for free. -- GM: The PCV filter is fixed, here's your keys. TW: I'm concerned about the long term damage to the engine. GM: Let's just see what has happened when you bring it back for the oil change. TW: OK, fast forward to the next oil change. GM: I don't think the oil leak will stop just because we put on a PCV filter. You're going to come back & it will still be a problem. TW: So let's say that's the scenario. Either the car will have oil, or it will have lost oil. What happens next? GM: I'm not going to speculate. You're talking about pure hypothetical scenarios. TW: What about the car's oil light coming on? How long can a car go on a 1/2 qt. before it causes damage? GM: It happens all the time. TW: So cars can run on less than a quart of oil without any problems? GM: You'd be surprised. TW: So when I come back for an oil change, there won't be any damage from when it went without oil? GM: I'm not going to have a circular argument with you about speculation & hypotheticals. I've spent a lot of time with you today & your problem is fixed. (GM walks away) read more

Discovered that my previous Auto repair shop was basically ripping me off. Every staff member is very friendly and takes their time with you. We've been taking our vehicles to Japanese Specialists for years, and up until the last two visits we haven't felt like a valued customer. In the past, the owner was behind the counter and was always very personable. The owner made us feel like family, he went through the billing so there were no surprise charges. He listened to us, we felt like he cared and was honest with us at the same time. Now this location is being remodeled and there are young new faces are behind the counter. They are not very friendly instead they are rigid and cold. When we picked up our 2001 Ford Escape on 7/28 we had a few questions on billing. The front desk lady wasn't clear when reviewing our invoice. She found a mistake in her billing and corrected it only after we questioned the bill. That same lady that helped us was so "matter of fact" that things were just that way and didn't show much room for understanding. Everything was black or white - no middle ground. We were charged $70 for our oil pan gasket but later we checked other places and it averages at $40. Also, they swapped our tires for $78, the going rate at Discount is $40. So we felt a little cheated and not valued. They are no longer our neighborhood garage that we have come to depend on for all our auto needs. We have taken all four of our vehicles there - our Subaru, Escape, Jeep and Nissan truck. We miss their friendly ways. We hope their remodel changes won't change who they are as a company or we won't be back. read more

I have been taking my car to Japanese Specialist since I bought the car from Auto Source back in July. It seems I've been there just about every other month for a different problem. I've never had any issues with this shop until I took it in for an oil change, the most basic thing that I've had done there ironically enough. I went in on Monday around 3:45 and my car wasn't done until around 5:15 which made me hit rush hour traffic on the way home since the shop is about 45 minutes from my house and I actually go out of my way to go there. Anyways I get in my car after the oil change is complete and whom ever did the oil change didn't know what they were doing, they reset my odometer and then set my next oil change date on the computer in my car to 03/2018. I just wanted to go home so I figured I'll fix that myself later. Fast forward to Wednesday, I'm on my way to work I get a call from my boyfriend saying that my car left a HUGE oil puddle in the garage. He calls Japanese specialist and they tell him for me to come by after work. I was told by the guy at the front desk that whom ever did my oil change "forgot to put the plug back in" and then asked "Have you been driving the car?" Which obviously I had. They then tried to spin it like they were doing me a favor by giving me another oil change on the spot....if they would have screwed the plug in correctly the 1st time I wouldn't be in this situation. They offered no refund. I was told that they would fix my next oil change date, it wasn't corrected. I was then asked to give a review via their automated email system and I said all of the above, my review was immediately taken down. I was then contacted by Al (the manager I'm assuming) and told that since my boyfriend had a difficult time getting the oil stain off the garage floor they would send a team member out with special cleaner to get rid of the oil stain. As much as I appreciate the offer that is the least of my worries. Please be aware that all the reviews on their website are nothing less than 4 & 5 star reviews. We have never felt pressured, and have left well educated about our vehicles and repairs. I have also taken in 2 used cars from dealerships in prior to purchasing one to have the shop check them out. They did a thorough evaluation of the cars and identified possible issues, and gave me recommendations. I felt much better knowing that the cars had been evaluated by independent professionals. If I could give them 10 stars I would! I was traveling through Denver on my way from MT to TX. Broke down literally in the middle of an intersection in Boulder-ish area. I know no one in Denver but was driving through the suburbs because I'm considering moving to the area. I immediately went on to Yelp to find a reputable place that would work on my Infiniti. I'm the daughter of a mechanic and know enough to be dangerous, and I knew exactly what was wrong w/my car. I called 3 other shops and got answering machines. I will cite as briefly as possible everything that went right, because as far as breakdowns in a city where you know no one goes, this was freakin' stellar! 1. Japanese Specialists answered their phone [Elise] 2. When I explained what happened and what codes I had gotten in the last few weeks, Elise went right to the issue and knew that one code was likely causing the others. She knew what order to diagnose the problem and that would likely fix the other issues I was having. This instilled confidence in me immediately that they wouldn't gouge an out-of-towner. 3. Elise said she could get the part and have the car fixed that day and quoted me a reasonable price of $250-ish 4. Despite having their lobby closed during a remodel, Elise let me use the bathroom and got water for my dog while we waited. 5. When the issue turned out to be more complicated and they couldn't get the part till the next morning, Elise and owner Ryan helped me find a hotel that would accept my dog [he's larger than the usual 30lb limit] 6. Ryan, the owner, personally drove me to the hotel 7. They had someone pick me up at the hotel to get back to the shop 8. The next morning the part arrived, they installed and test drove the car and found one more minor issue that had to be addressed. All in all it only cost $300. Love this place! My car was shaking violently and my check engine light was flashing. I could smell a burning smell coming my engine. I thought my car was on its last leg. I read Yelp reviews and decided to give them a call. They said they would diagnose it for free so I dropped my key off in the night drop the next morning before work. By 11am they called and told me I only needed a new ignition coil which was a very cheap repair. With the state of my car, they could have easily told me I need a new engine and I would have believed them. Instead they chose to be honest. They completed the repairs and an oil change and I picked my car up that same day after work. If you are looking for an honest, competent and most of all very reasonably priced auto repair shop, look no further. I just had my 95 Tacoma repaired at Japanese specialists (this was my first time using them). They were fast and the cost to rebuild my starter solenoid was great. Mike told me about a couple of things I should keep an eye on and an estimate to take care of them. No pressure to have any additional work, just a heads up on my breaks and a tie rod. These jerks don't care how much smoke they blow up your ass while they waste your time and money. I even asked to speak to the owner and was turned down. I'm a single mother who apparently has nothing better to do than hang out at an auto shop on the other side of town from home, oh, but they knew all of that, too. Still, I know they don't care and this review won't change anything, but maybe it'll change your decision to go to them for service. 11:00 appointment for new tires today and an oil change. Show up at 11:05 - no tires. Why? Because nobody ordered them on Friday when I was assured the tires would be there by 11:00 on Monday. 11:30 they've arranged to pick up tires from will-call and agree to start on other work immediately while I wait, so I head out to find lunch and get some work done at a nearby greasy-spoon because why? Oh, right, I don't have a car. 2:00 I come back to see they haven't even started on my car, noting I had told them I absolutely needed to leave by 4:00 and was told my car would be ready long before 4:00, but they took advantage of my ability to wait rather than prioritize my car... did I mention I had an appointment at 11:00? 3:00 I'm told my car is done but needs an oil filter. I say go ahead because I'm told it'll take 10 minutes. 4:00 no word from anyone so I ask to pay. Only then am I told they don't actually have the oil filter and were waiting for it to be delivered, but never bothered to tell me so I waited for an hour for nothing. Get home. Wheel lock is in my seat and the car tool-kit is strewn across my trunk. The valve caps to my new tires are missing. Bottom line: made an appointment for work that should have been done in an hour.
