It's quite nice to find a locally owned, clean, and personable car shop like The Auto Shop! Mickey is very helpful and is probably the nicest person I've ever had to deal with doing any kind of car service. They provided a ride to/from the shop which was quite nice. The only reason I can't give them 5 stars for this visit was because I was using an online coupon from their site, which seemed like a REALLY good deal (3 fluid flushes for $125). They said they would accept the coupon...until they actually saw it and realized that their web person made a mistake on it. Mickey was very polite and apologetic regarding the mix-up, and they still gave me a WAY better price than the dealership, but I can imagine if I didn't catch it, they might've had an irate customer on their hands. Every other shop I called within a 5 mile radius (9 total) said that it was unheard of for a shop no to apply the diag to the repair costs. Last visited here a year or so ago. Mom and I were here once before for both of our cars a couple of years ago and liked our experiences then, so I came back. This time it was an oil leak, but they could not find the leak after two attempts. How much did their "investigations" cost me? More than $600!! And my car STILL leaked! I called a relative, who's knowledgeable in cars and lives out-of-state, and told him of my troubles here, and after speaking w/ the manager on the phone he was able to get him to give my money back. I have not gone back to have my car serviced here, and I could never recommend anyone, not even those that I do not like, to come here. (Honestly, I could never deceive anyone into doing something I know they'll regret just bec. I don't like them!) I did not appreciate the condescending way he spoke to me, or to my relative, either. I was very disappointed with this shop. I called to make an appoint for their minor maintenance service. Before we ended the call he tells me "We are all set I have you down for the MAJOR maintenance" which is $350 more then the service I scheduled. I corrected him and blew it off as a simple error minor, major maybe they sounded the same to him. When I dropped my car off they tried to get me to do the Intermediate service which was $140 more then the service I asked them to do. I told them I was not interested and I wanted to do the minor maintenance. They went on to try and up-sell the intermediate service AGAIN because my car might need the transmission fluid serviced. This was all assessed from looking at my car from the waiting room window. Once I explained to them that I had already had my transmission serviced a month prior they back off with the up-selling. When I called to see if my car was ready (six hours later) I was told "You need to come down because we found serious problems" When I arrived I was advised that I should "Buy a new car right away, within the next 30 days because your car is not safe to drive because the rear control arm is rusted almost all the way through" When I asked for details about this control arm I was just given horror stories about how the back end will break off and the rusting was so bad they had to lift my car in a "special way" just to change the oil. I was never given ANY information on how to remedy this problem other then "Buy another car". I thought their advice sounded a little fishy and vague so I called 180 Automotive where I have taken my car once before and had excellent service. I spoke with Bogi and explained what I was told and she told me to bring the car in the next day and they would check it out. The information I received from The Auto Shop was nothing but hyped up scare tactics. After getting a second option I know I do not need to buy another car in the next 30 days and I have the details and information I need to make informed decisions about my cars maintenance. I will not return to The Auto Shop, I am going to drive the extra miles to 180 Automotive were I can get not only great service but information so I can make educated decisions about my car. read more

I don't offer a review of an auto shop lightly. This one deserves it. About 5 years ago I needed a mechanic and a coworker told me she was friends with one of the owners of this place. She said he was a former Indy 500 mechanic and ran a slightly higher-end operation, but that he'd never rip me off and won't screw up my car. I went, was pleased, and have been a bunch of times over the 5 years since and remain pleased. [Note: Their website makes no mention of someone having Indy 500 experience, so I don't know if my coworker was imagining things or not. That's just what she told me.] Its highest marks come for this consistent feature of every time I've been: they'll give me an estimate (and may charge for the estimate, be pre-warned; I recall paying 20 bucks for them to find out what was wrong with some electrical wiring), I'll accept it and give them the green light to start work, and when they call me to tell me the results it has ALWAYS been slightly below the estimate. Whether or not this is part of a deliberate goal of theirs to slightly over-estimate costs in order to never surprise the customer, I don't know. All I know is that I appreciate knowing ahead of time to the best of their ability what I am in for, and then actually having to pay no more than that. I really, really, really appreciate that. Two other reasons for the five stars: location (downtown), and their free shuttle service to and from (as far as I know) anywhere in the Valley. They have a dedicated van for this purpose, with a dedicated driver, who happens to be an ol' coot who's lived in Phoenix for 2 centuries and will tell you everything you've ever wanted to know about the history of downtown Phoenix and/or why you should never get married. read more

I avoid the dealership because I feel like they look for problems and pay their service techs in commission. And they take advantage of me because I'm a woman who isn't supposed to know anything about cars. Thankfully I have found The Auto Shop. I don't know what everyone else is complaining about. I LOVE these guys! I've been to The Auto Shop twice in the past few years. The first time was because our battery died and we towed the car there to have a new one put in. This last time was to replace a headlight. Both times the mechanics have been honest and courteous. I have NEVER felt talked down to at The Auto Shop. Repeat: NEVER They are close to where we live so I can walk there to get my car. Usually I drop the car off before work and take the light rail. The shuttle is a nice perk too because my husband and I share a car. They offer AAA discounts and post a calendar of savings on their website. What's that you ask? Well they have discount days based on the make of your car. Got a Kia? Get a discount on Kia day. You get the idea. They also offer 8 free oil changes a month on Thursdays. The catch? Your license plate has to have the randomly selected letter/number combo on that day and you have to call ahead to schedule but if your car wins you get a free oil change! The motor / regulator that rolls my passenger window up and down broke, so I decided to give the Auto Shop a try based on a coworker's recommendation. The Auto Shop quoted me less than the dealer and it's convenient for anyone who works downtown. The service was quick and professional, and they guy who runs the place is really nice and personable. They even offer a shuttle service where they'll pick you up / drop you off. I walked to work but had them pick me up in the evening and they were right on time. So far so good, the window is working well! I will use the Auto Shop again in the future if I need repairs. read more

I have found The Auto Shop to be a convenient and trustworthy place to take my car. The staff is very polite and courteous, and they don't talk down to you, nor are they aggressive salespeople. They provide you with updates on your car and they don't push a sale if you can't afford it. I was referred by my brother and have been here twice - once for an oil change & the other for tire replacement and alignment. Very clean, friendly, professional & reasonable. Felt they they provided fair pricing and cared about customers over making money (awesome!). Feel they are very trustworthy and will continue to frequent this business for all my auto needs. Mickey was so helpful and so kind - I was stranded with a flat outside arcosanti, got towed to his shop at three in the morning, walked in when it opened after sleeping in my car, and was exhausted and dirty. Mickey offered me water, coffee, let me know they'd be able to fix things my flat in an hour and a half, met his own deadline of timeline, and let me know what recalls my car was due for. This shop was professional, kind, fast and easy to work with. Didn't try to upsell or downsell me on anything. Let me know what my options were and let me choose. i decided to go back to the auto shop to give them a second chance. i took my 1987 BMW that had an exhaust leak and no power to it. they said they couldn't tell where the exhaust leak was coming from, they would have to tear open the manifold to diagnose it. This place is awesome...just got my car back after having brake work done. They gave me the student discount and they really worked with me on the price. He didn't try to sell me on a bunch of stuff I didn't need. Another thing is they are super fast they had this done in a few hours whereas other places I've gone to it's an overnight process. He also didn't oil change for me for $39.99 which I thought was a pretty good price for synthetic blend. It's a great little neighborhood car shop and I'm glad we have it here. read more

I am much overdue in posting this but about a month ago I dropped my car with Mickey at The Auto Shop, and let me tell you I could not be any happier. I have a 2005 malibu and it was just due for some maintenance that i had been putting off, as well as a few minor repairs. I dropped the car off and basically told them, quote me what you think needs done, and a price and I will tell you what i want you to do from there. I fully expected them to come back with a $2-3k quote and much to my surprise, nothing unnecessary was on the invoice, and the price was about $1000 below what I was expecting to have to pay. Between the extremely pleasant experience dealing with Mickey and knowing they dont try and rip people off like most auto shops do, I have found the auto shop I will be taking my cars to for the rest of my life Thanks Guys! read more

I work just down the street from this place and like to drop my truck off here for oil changes. The people behind the counter have been really nice every time I have gone in. They even wash my truck after they change the oil! They also offer to give me a ride to work after I drop off my truck. My truck does have some major problems that need to be fixed but once I told them I would rather fix them myself they never asked about it again or tried pushing me into buying anything. I've always been one to do my own auto repairs but with the convenience of this shop I will continue to drop my truck off for oil changes. read more

No longer trust this shop. Struggled what 2 write for 3 months. Hate 2 leave bad review, but it's warranted and others need 2B informed. Used Shop 4 approx 15 yrs. First 13 good. Last 2 bad. Brought vehicle back 3x due 2 oil gauge. They sd they cd not duplicate. Had my daughter video control panel & prove. Finally fixed. However, was w/o car 4 almost a week. Took Mom's car in. After "repair" it made grinding noise when turning right upon leaving Shop's driveway (they shd have heard). Drove it, heard noise, called Shop, took back. They sd it was strut (repaired by dealer less a year ago) and sd take back 2 dealer. She did. Problem NOT strut. Was in brake assembly. Dealer fixed. Auto Shop misdiagnosed, cost themselves a repair & Mom an extra trip 2 another facility. Nov 2017 took my car in & told shop mgr about noise from front end when turning wheel. Was hoping it was front bumper (which was messed up) rubbing on wheel. He sd they would go thru vehicle bumper 2 bumper & tell me all needed repairs so I cd decide what 2 repair. He knew this was important as vehicle was 12 y/o. Couldn't afford new then. Hoped 2 keep Trailblazer til 2020. Being disabled on fixed income needed 2 get some bills pd down B4 taking on car payment. He gave list of needed repairs. Lower than expected so decided 2 do extra $1500 in repairs which were not immediately necessary because he said this should B all that was needed 4 some time. Back less than 3 months later because they never addressed front end noise (not caused by bumper & getting worse.) Wrote letter re my dissatisfaction which led 2 discussion with owner (very nice man). Another $1200 in needed repairs (almost $4500 in 4 months). I wd not have done the extra $1500 in work if they had caught this issue when I first told them about it. 3 months later car was stalling & hard 2 start. Took 2 another shop. They sd bad unit in fuel pump & need 2 take back 2 Auto Shop 4 warranty. Fuel pump replaced under warranty. Couple weeks later I go 2 fill up my tank & gas is pouring all over. Towed 2 other facility. Result: Auto Shop failed 2 attach clamp securing gas tank hose 2 neck at gas cap (photo attached). I & my service dog cd have been killed from an explosion (fumes + 115 deg heat). Any road spark cd have caused my car 2 catch fire. Owner accepted responsibility - sd technician admitted he doesn't remember reattaching clamp. Owner wanted 2 make things right, talk 2 the manager & get back with me. Was forced 2 trade in vehicle because I was so afraid 2 drive it - had anxiety attacks every time I tried 2 drive & was canceling important medical appts. This was significant hardship - I was not prepared 2 have a car payment now, but had 2 make appts - had 2 trade down w/o the time needed 2 save 4 down payment. Still miss my Trailblazer. Their way of making things right was 2 send me a check 4 new shoes (ruined by gas) & a tank of gas. I have not cashed the check. Was quite a shock 2 see that my life & the life of my service dog had such little value. I think the LEAST they could have done was reimburse 4 the initial repair that started this mess - approx $700. My life, the life of my service dog, and the hardship this caused me are worth a lot more than that. This review was not written because of their "payment." If it was, it would have been written long ago. HUGE & potentially DEADLY problem. I feel very fortunate 2B alive & physically unharmed. I had decided 2 end my affiliation with this business B4 this incident, but had to return for warranty work. Customers & Auto Mechanics need 2B aware they are working on what cd be the difference between a breakdown and/or serious injury/death 2 drivers/passengers. You NEED 2B able 2 trust your mechanic with your life, because that is what you are doing. Normally, this would have been a zero-star review because of the seriousness. Great auto shop. I brought my truck here after getting a $1700 estimate from the dealership that wasn't even a guaranteed fix. My truck had been back and forth to the dealership service center and they could not solve the problem. I called here and talked to Kurt, he listened to me for ten minutes explaining the problem and all of the details. These guys are great. They really care about their customer. My car broke down on the highway after business hours and I was recommended to bring my car to them. Since the shop was already closed I had to leave the car at their shop without speaking to them first. The next morning, they completely understood my situation and got started on my car first thing that day. They kept me updated on the vehicle and didn't work on the car until they gave me a full explanation on what was wrong, an estimate on the fix, and waited for full approval to go ahead and fix it. I was working with a very small budget and they let me know what my options were to get the car fixed with the little money I had, and they never once hid any fees from me, including tax. They even said if I needed it, they could have picked me up from work or from my house in their shuttle to pick up the car. I didn't need it but it was comforting to know if anything like that ever happened again, that would be available to me. I was very relieved that they had the car done by the time I was finished with work. They are fast, flexible, and genuine people. read more

I'm one of those people who hates taking my car to a mechanic because I always wind up hearing I got screwed after what ends up being an already stressful day. It's the worst. That's why, when even the biggest cynic in my life can hear about how great and stress-free my experience was with The Auto Shop and not find any flaws in my assessment, I know I've found the best place in town. I don't have AAA, so I'm already at a disadvantage in the event of my car breaking down (as it did today). However, I didn't really miss out on the perks of AAA. The Auto Shop gave me a free tow to its garage and had an employee "shuttle" me to work (for free) and then pick me up when my car was ready after work (for free). They also explained all the issues with my car and the resulting charges (which, after Googling part prices and average labor costs came out as very fairly quoted). They even washed and vacuumed my car (again, for free)! I absolutely would trust them with any repairs or maintenance in the future. read more

I visited my son in phoenix who is a student at ASU. He tries not to complain about car problems since he's happy that I even gave him a car. Upon driving the car I realized that it was incredibly dangerous. Bearings shot, brakes shot, and a few other problems. We brought it in to The Auto Shop and Elijah took care of all the problems for a reasonable price. He's a true gentleman to deal with and I would like to have him as an employee of mine. read more
