I root for people. I root for small businesses. Everyone has a bad night. And I, except for one other time, have only written positive reviews for the establishments I have been lucky enough to frequent. I feel deeply compelled to write this review (My intention is not to hurt a business. My intention is to hold someone accountable for behavior that is completely inappropriate). My review will be supplemented by other guests that also witnessed the altercation. The Patterson Inn is a lovely property. The rooms are well appointed and the included breakfast is wonderful (yummy and very fresh). And the staff minus the owner were great. The issue at the Patterson Inn is a singular issue - the owner is abusive, greedy, aggressive and downright scary. He feels a bit unhinged. Very defensive and quick to angry over a pretty small incident. I mean no disrespect to the owner to describe him this way but truly that's how it felt. Even the emails he sent after my stay felt unstable. He kept calling me names and kept telling me "to cease and desist." It was insane. For one of the nights I was in town, My Cousin stayed with me and was a witness to the incident and he almost called the police as Chris was yelling so loudly calling me an entitled victim. Another hotel guest approached me that afternoon and they were "horrified." I should have left then and there. I am a 55 year old single woman who booked a week long stay at the Patterson Inn. I am a Denver native and recently moved to South Carolina but came home for the week to care for my elderly Mom. Patterson Inn is in the heart on Capitol Hill - a vibrant walkable area. First and most importantly, I do take full accountability in my part of the incident that occurred. Patterson Inn provides 3 parking spaces and there is generally ample street parking. However, that night when I came home the area was teeming with police cars. There was an active shooter in the area and the police were asking residents to "stay in place." All the spaces at the Inn were full so I pulled my car into the loading zone in front of the hotel and my car was partially blocking another car in one of the Patterson spaces. The car had ample space to get out. I was in no way obstructing the driver from getting out of the space but I admit that I was probably a foot over the loading zone. I am 100 percent responsible for doing this. I tried and tried to apologize to Chris. I have never in my life had someone respond to me and treat me the way I was treated. Chris completely lost it. He threw a temper tantrum that was heard trough out the Inn and made the other guests profoundly unconfortable. See the other reviews from those guests. Chris brought me to tears yelling over me. He kept calling me victim and said "you don't care about other people." I'd never said more than hello to him prior to this interaction. I just keep trying to de-escalate the situation. My cousin and another guest recorded the exchange. Chris is also a big guy and as we were interacting at one point he stood up and postured himself in a way that I felt physically threatened. My cousin almost called the police. I honestly felt bad for parking inappropriately and did everything in my power to stay calm but chris really had trouble composing himself until he realized he'd made me cry. I apologized repeatedly for parking incorrectly and I even offered to leave the Inn but Chris said he would not refund my money. My whole goal during the interaction was to try and calm Chris down. I thought at the end of it that things had been resolved although myself and other guests certainly felt awkward and uncomfortable. I went out that day and bought Chris and his staff (who were wonderful) a Panetonne to again assert my apology and to hope to keep Chris calm and professional during the remainder of my stay. They staff loved it and ate it happily (Chris claims no one ate it because I might have poisoned it - I kid you not. I saw the front desk clerk eat it). The 4th day I was there my son was hit by a car while on his bike causing him to break both femur bones. Herein I needed to check out of the hotel and fly to be with my son in DC. I alerted the front desk clerk about the situation and asked if I could have a credit for the remaining nights to use at a later date. She said great but would need to check in with Chris. I gave it a couple days and reached out. When Chris finally responded he said there would be no credit. So I paid for 3 nights and he would not credit those nights back and then he again became belligerent.

We just stayed in The Library at the Patterson Inn, and we are certainly planning to return to…read morerepeat the experience. I'll try to keep this short: the Patterson Inn is a delightful boutique hotel with glorious original interiors that have been refurbished in a way that both honors the historical original and gives attention to the modern comforts people expect nowadays. So many small perfect details, storage everywhere in the room, good WiFi throughout, beautiful areas to relax, the on-site 12 Spirits bar, the great breakfasts served in a beautiful area and featuring made-from-scratch-on-site and local goods . . . and most of all the welcoming and helpful staff, who quickly feel like friends. (Cheers and so many thanks to owner Chris Chiari and innkeeper Steve.) And what a delightful neighborhood - safe, walkable, FUN, with all manner of entertaining things within an easy walk. The Library was large and SO comfortably appointed, with tons of storage, space heater and cooler and a great modern bathroom - just couldn't have been happier. On the haunting front - first of all, I'm not into this stuff. At all. But. When we unpacked, I'd left my (large, hardshell) suitcase on top of the luggage rack on the side by the entry door, and I'd put a large hardback book I was reading it dead square in the middle of it. Went to supper, had some drinks. Came back six hours later and my wife lay on the bed (on the side away from the entry) to check her messages. I was over at the desk by the windows (on the side away from the entry) plugging in my phone to charge. It had been maybe three minutes since we entered the room. THUMP! over by the entrance to the room. We looked at each other. We both said, "It wasn't me." I went over to look and . . . my big hardbound book was now lying on the floor about three feet from the suitcase on the luggage rack. Weird. Weird enough that we were seriously trying to figure out how it had fallen (there hadn't been an earthquake, no one was jumping around, it was totally still and getting later in the evening) and eventually one of us said, "Hey, what if it was the ghost?" Ha ha. Told the staff the next morning as kind of a ha-ha thing and they were remarkably unsurprised and gave every appearance of having heard this sort of thing a lot. It was weird to us, though. Anyway, forget about that - the Patterson Inn was a great stay for us, and we are really looking forward to a return. What we're up in air about is whether we want to stay again in The Library (which we loved) or check out another room.

The lobby has a wine/coffee bar with a library style, high ceiling lounge with comfortable seating and a warm fireplace. The Christmas tree was in the entrance foyer that helped make the seasonal experience. The hotel is connected to The Nickel restaurant and was a nice option for meals while I was in town. I ate twice here and left a separate outstanding review for them. My room was a very comfortable. I slept well on the King size bed and the rain style shower was awesome. The room also came with a tub and the hotel provided bath salts and bath ball for soaking. Normally, I would pass, but it was too good to not take advantage of. It was extremely relaxing. All in all, I am looking forward to my next trip to Denver and bringing the Mrs. We will most definitely stay at the Hotel Teatro when we do. Until next time, Cheers!

Staying at the Hotel Teatro was a mistake we won't make twice…read more We were created by the friendly staff and checked in and offered a prosecco or soda. That was great and I highly recommend the prickly pear soda. They are walkable to a lot of restaurants and the opera house, and also offer car service within 2 miles. Very handy. But that's where the good ends for me. Our room was tucked up behind the elevators among a bunch of weird little stairs, like the most unimpressive Escher painting. It was very dark with only 2 lamps and 2 bedside lights. We could have opened the wall of windows, but because the doors and windows were not properly sealed, the only way to keep the freezing cold air rushing in was to keep the blackout curtains closed. The heat worked well, but cycled frequently and was very loud. The intake is next to the bed, so it disrupted our sleep. The fitness center was sad. There was one treadmill, one bike, one elliptical, and one weight bench, which is fine, but only 5-12 lb and 25-50lb weights (nothing between). Also, it was 82 degrees and there is no cold water available. It does not appear to have been swept or vacuumed in weeks. I used one of 2 beat up mats and from the ground could really see the filth. At check in, we were given a wooden nickel ($10 credit) for each night and told we could use it in the hotel restaurant, The Nickel. They only offer breakfast in Saturday and Sunday, so we went our 2nd day. I got the shakshuka, and when it arrived there were 2 poached eggs on top, not cooked in the sauce. NBD until I took a bite and all the sauce was room temp, as though it has just come out of a jar. There were areas slightly above room temperature, like it had been under a heat lamp. Wildly disappointing. My BF thought his avocado toast was pretty basic for the price. We tried to spend our last wooden nickel that night, getting a drink there, and were told it was only good in the other lounge area, which is odd since we both heard them tell us the nickel was for the Nickel. We ended up paying $42 for 2 small apps (a single croquette and 3 tiny gourges) and a glass of wine. I wouldn't have gotten anything but we wanted to burn the credit and BF wanted a snack with his wine. So we paid full price. Overall, very expensive for what it was. This is a 3-star hotel on it's best day, and someone needs to investigate the kitchen. We also feel deceived about the daily credit.
