This a hidden gem, and I'm actually sad to review it because I don't want this place to become popular so it can be my hidden secret forever! (Insert maniacal laugh) But, seriously, this place is amaze-balls! I came here with my good friends to get some drinks and unwind from the day. It was a Wednesday night and it was nearly empty around 5:30 pm, but don't let that fool you! The place quickly started filling up as the evening went on and we came to find out that Wednesdays are free Trivia Nights at the Angry Beaver starting at 8pm. While our group did not participate, the bar was pretty packed, so I can only assume it's a worthwhile event. The tables are super roomy, so there's plenty of room to bring your friends! Also, there is a pool table and an array of TVs all showing Canadian sports. Go Canada! Our server/bartender was hilarious and just set the mood for a really great time! This is a great spot to get your hockey fix and hang out with friends. The food is really good, particularly the poutine and buffalo chicken sandwich. It is pretty loud in there, so maybe not a great spot for a date night. The service can be a bit slow too. I recommend trying the bloody caesar. Delicious! read more

We all felt real comfortable here, the neighborhood feeling. A great balance--a funkiness that might attract hipsters, but then an emphasis on hockey and things Canadian. Add in, importantly, an attention to food quality that's above average. Pool table, shuffle board, several TVs, but we were here to eat. Of course the poutine, but a good range of options. My friends and I love this place. Granted, I'm biased because, well, poutine. Fries? Good. Cheese curds? Goood. Multiple flavors of gravy? Goooooood! It's a comfortable joint that reminds me of the neighborhood sports pubs back home, including the fun staff. Even if we're not into any of the games being broadcast, we've never been bored with shuffleboard and an assortment of table games to play. Oh, and did I mention the Canadian themed cocktails? They will serve you a flight of poutine. Review over. I do feel inclined to add a few more things, however. They have a list of specialty drinks made with maple simple syrup. Yes, you read that right. The downside is that every one involves whiskey, which isn't my thing. I also had the fried cheese curds and the french dip sandwich. The fried cheese curds were great, but the portion was a little small. That was odd given the massive portion sizes of everything else. The french dip was great, and they even loaded it with melted beecher's cheese; many places do not put any cheese on a french dip, and this worked! I'm withholding the fifth star because the seating is a bit odd in places - our group of four took a booth (who wouldn't!) but directly above the booth was a massive TV, so we felt like zoo animals as other tables looked directly at/over us. In a well-intentioned but obnoxious move, someone on staff (owner?) came by halfway through our meal and really cranked up the volume on the TV so that the far-away tables could hear it. Visited The Angry Beaver a few times now, and have enjoyed each visit. First visit went for delicious food. Halibut and Chips - Fantastic Choice! So tasty and so filling. Second Visit l enjoyed another great dinner. Had a great Cheese Burger with good ol Amercan Bacon and all the fixins. I love a great place to go to catch a game. If you aren't from Minnesota or Northern Minnesota (Canada), I don't think you'll suffer the joyful, artery clogging tears that I experienced after wolfing down a plate of poutine and a plate of cheese curds. With Canadian in tow, we ventured to The Angry Beaver in hopes of beer and poutine. The adventure was odd, to say the least. After sitting for a considerable amount of time, a waitress finally came to our table for drink orders. "What's on tap?", I asked. "Oh, the drinks are all listed over there," she replied, gesturing to the tiny chalkboard stretching across the bar on the opposite side of the room."Wow," I said, "That's really hard to read from here!" A blank stare and a plastic smile are on the girl's face, as she stands poised with pen over pad. I adjust my glasses and squint. "I really can't see that at all," I prompt hopefully. She continues to stand blank faced with pen over pad. I give up and ask for "the cider", as it seems one of the words on the list seems to say cider. There must only be one, because this seems to satisfy her. I also ordered the regular poutine, not quite feeling adventurous enough for the flight. My companion ordered the poutine as well, and I briefly panicked about the quantity of food which may appear. Not to worry - the poutine is perfectly sized for an appetizer to share, but is exactly the right amount to satisfy one person if you're not having other food with it. I thought the curds looked to be a little light, but there were plenty more hiding inside the pile of fries. The gravy was decent and the whole mess was hot, but not scalding. I'd say it's the best poutine I've had around here, at least. Sadly, that's the only good thing about this place. When another friend joined us, the waitress came back to refill our drinks but didn't think to ask him if he'd like anything. Then she brought us our check, without asking if we would be wanting anything else. It was a bit awkward trying to tell her that we, along with our new friend, weren't quite done yet. The place wasn't full, so I'm not exactly sure what her rush was! Asking for the bathroom while she was attending to the rest of our table earned me the "wait a minute" finger. The TVs were mostly playing weird infomercials and there were odd sounds coming from the back as well as bleeding over from neighbouring venues. In town for a few nights and needed a place to catch the Sharks game! Was directed to another bar but when we pulled up, there was no hockey on TV, and it just didn't feel right going in. So, we headed over to the Angry Beaver. As soon as we pulled up, we saw the giant Canadian flag and could spot hockey on a projector screen. Score! So we rolled in and placed ourselves in a well worn booth. Walls were covered in hockey jerseys and memorabilia. Perfect place for any hockey fan. Poutine flight was the way to go. I thought some of the gravies were lacking a little seasoning but that's an easy fix. Plus it was drenching FRIES and CHEESE so how could I really complain. We had the side salad to help make a dent in the grease balls in our stomachs. We happened to be there the night Bracken Kearns scored his first NHL goal. This wouldn't be particularly exciting to me but on this night, his brother happened to be sitting at the table next to us and he started jumping up and down, yelling. For a dive bar, this place is seriously awesome. My boyfriend introduced me to The Beaver because he's an avid hockey fan. His team was playing last weekend and what better way to show our support then go to a Canadian themed dive bar, drink beer and eat poutine? The answer to that question is, of course, there isn't. As I mentioned, we partook in copious amounts of beer drinking and indulged in (ready for it?) a poutine burger. Not a burger with a side of poutine. A burger topped with poutine. My mouth is watering just thinking of it. It's quite possibly the most sinful thing ever. And yet it's so undeniably delicious. The burger on its own is dynamite - juicy, perfectly seasoned and on a great bun! Then it's covered in glorious hand-cut french fries covered in gravy and cheese curds. UH-MAZING. Went to this bar for a buddy's birthday and the owner was super nice to our somewhat unconscious friend and large crew of people. The interior had a hodgepodge of Canadian and hockey decor which I thought added to the laidback charm of the place. It seemed to have a good vibe for watching sports and just grabbing a beer, with a fairly diverse crowd. Of course, we were ordering rounds of shots so it wasn't the most mellow of nights... Go here. It's a fail as a pub and as a Canadian eatery. I've given this place a couple tries out of obligation as a Canadian and a Greenwood resident, it's pretty crappy. The poutine didn't have any real cheese curds, the service was so bad the bar-tender had to come check on us after the waitress disappeared . Happy-hour was a joke, even after checking with the waitress, we were billed at the non-happy-hour rate. This would be a 2-3 star eatery if I didn't leave feeling ripped off. Putting a couple hockey Jerseys on the wall and showing whatever NHL game is on does not make it a "Canadian" pub. read more

Has become my favorite neighborhood bar. Nice variety -- quiet with good conversation and funny wait staff on the off nights, rowdy live music every so often, and an absolute riot during the major sports games (protip: the Canada-themed bar is a LITTLE bit into hockey). We're hockey fans, especially my boyfriend, so had to check this place out. I don't drink beer, but the bf says the selection was decent. The poutine flight was excellent- we polished that off quickly!- clearly the previous reviewer who was complaining about the gravy has weird expectations. Staff was friendly, although not overly so. What I really wasn't impressed by was the decor. Slapping some snowshoes and hockey gear on the wall doesn't turn a place into a hockey bar. The neon chalk markers used to write on the window were super tacky. The owner maybe needs to pay a visit to someplace like Teddy's, to get the feel for how to make it appropriately kitschy-NW-sports-bar-esque, since that was clearly the desired vibe. The whole decorative scheme just felt rushed and like it'd been put together by high schoolers. I wanted to give this place at least 4 stars... And maybe I'll be able to, once they get ore settled in and get their decor a bit more up to par. read more

This place may be good for what it is - a Canadian hockey dive bar. But, we will never go back, and I can only imagine die-hard hockey fans finding it worth their time and money. By way of background, we used to frequent the old Pig & Whistle for what it was - mediocre food, mediocre drinks, mediocre prices, but a neighborhood feel, and a relatively consistent and clean place with friendly and fairly to very competent service. This was our first and almost certainly our last time at its replacement, the Angry Beaver. The first thing we noticed when we got to our table was that it felt grimy, sticky, and rickety - the chairs felt like they might fall apart at any moment. A very nice and friendly bartender came over right away, but then asked us what he could do for us, like he wasn't quite sure why we were there or what to do with us. We said we wanted to grab some dinner and a drink or two. He brought over menus that were VERY limited in choices - they mostly involved fries, gravy, beef, or some combination of all three. They did have a vegan gravy option and vegan veggie burger option. But, when we tried to order a veggie burger, they were out. The food was served not by the friendly bartender, but by a female waitress who was wearing a very big hockey jersey with the long sleeves almost in our food. That, along with her generally not-quite-clean appearance and less-than-friendly attitude, did not sit well with me. My husband had the french dip, and said it tasted okay, but he felt awful afterwards (like the food was sitting heavy in his stomach). My son and I split the fish and chips. The beer batter was great, but there was way too much of it and it was very greasy. There was also only one piece of fish (it was a big piece) and the fish had bones in it. (I've lived in Seattle my whole life and NEVER had bones in fish and chips. I was just lucky that I found them in the piece that I was pulling apart to cool it off for my son, and that neither of us discovered them in our mouths.) The fries were just okay. As a three-some, we ate way less than half of the two orders (that came with the entrees) on our table. We didn't see either the waitress or the bartender at our table again until after my husband hunted down the waitress to pay and she brought back the receipt to sign. By the time we left, it was getting very busy and rowdy and loud. I'm glad to see a local business doing well. I'm sad that we won't be supporting it. read more

So the first night I ordered from them was on the 1st of September I got the French dip with poutin fries it was really good probably the second best I've ever had. came in a big portion everything in there own containers. I would definitely order that again. So today September 3rd I ordered chicken wings with sweet chili sauce & fried cheese curds as before I ordered I looked on Yelp at the pictures of the food just to get an idea of what I was going to order and what I actually got I had about six squished cheese curds with a ranch dip sitting on top of them and about eight chicken wings lightly breaded with Thai sweet chili sauce in a cup they put the sauce in the little plastic cups on hot chicken because by the time I received it the plastic was melted some sauces on the chicken some was on the box some was in the completely crashed container for my first order I received my food in a bag so it was hot. as in this order for today I did not it was in two paper containers that looks like someone had sat on them. In the pictures of the food I was supposed to also get a marinara sauce with my cheese curds obviously was a full plate on the picture and celery and dip for my chicken wings that in the picture were drenched in sauce and looked actually edible. I don't know if this just happened to be an off-day but was very disappointing that this was the second time I ever ordered from them and it was pretty poorly. Oh and how is it I spent less on a French dip and poutine fries which were pretty good and almost $30 on squash cheese sticks and chicken wings. Not cool! read more

Oh, this is the PERFECT sports bar. It has such personality. Canada. Everywhere, Canada. And hockey forever. We were here for the World Cup, actually, and it was a blast. They have several very large flat screens all over, and then a huge projection screen, as well. Great sight lines no matter where you sit. Decent selection of beers on tap (currently featuring American brewery from Edmonds). The menu is, well, I guess it's what Canadian Hockey Fans like to eat. Poutine poutine poutine. All fries should be covered in gravy and Beecher's cheese curds. They have five (FIVE!!) gravies to choose from (Curry, Beef, Turkey, Country, or Mushroom). We got a "Poutine Flight" with Mushroom (delicious), Curry (also yummy), and Country (nice to have a "lighter" option between bites of the heavier gravies). Other menu options all seem to be deepfried (deep fried cheese curds, fried Calgary ginger beef with maple sauce) or one POUND of chicken wings with sauce choices. Ha! Also several delicious burgers. My pal said the Flank Steak Sandwich was great. Tables near us ordered the fish and chips, and these also looked yummy. The "Salads" section of the menu made me laugh out loud. 3 options. 1: greens. 2. Flank steak on top of greens. 3. buffalo chicken tenders on top of greens. Service was very friendly, and actually incredibly great considering the capacity World Cup crowd. And the fact that for the first hour the bartender was the ONLY employee scheduled (other than the cook in the back). This poor man had to take orders from the multiple tables, bring orders to kitchen, deliver food to tables, fill and deliver drinks to tables, take and fill orders at the bar. Eventually a patron (apparently an employee there on his day off) started helping. I mean, we all had a great time, but seems like a terrible management choice to so critically understaff during the World Cup. read more

Blackhawks fan here. Yes I realize we didn't make it past the first round of playoffs this year. I'm okay with that. I'm not okay with not being able to go to the Angry Beaver to watch the rest of playoffs. This is a hockey bar, but all fans welcome. There's the friendly banter and sh** talk happening at the bar, but that's just it - it's all friendly. They play almost every game, and will totally accommodate where they play what game on what tv based off where the fans are sitting. I've never felt more at home in a bar watching hockey. I was excited about a bar dedicated to hockey. Unfortunately, it did not live up to expectations. Came in with a group and sat at a table near a tv that was on the channel of the game we wanted to watch. Just prior to the game starting, they changed the channel. We asked to have it turned back because we did not have good sight-lines towards any other tvs, but the waitress refused. She said it was their policy not to change channels after a game started. Whatever - it's a stupid "policy" that I could've dealt with it if she had been polite and apologetic - you know, basic customer service. Instead, we were met with unnecessary arrogance and condescending sarcasm. Service was spotty. Waitress would take one or two people's orders at a time while ignoring others at the table who were trying to order. A couple of drinks were forgotten with the excuse of "Oh, I couldn't hear," after having repeated the order back when it was originally given. The food was "ok". Asked for burger without lettuce, tomato, and onion, but - you guessed it - it came out with all 3. Poutine was good, but they really skimp on the gravy and curds. There were a lot of little things that weren't great in my experience. It would've landed somewhere between "I'll go if a game is on" and "I won't suggest it, but if someone really wants to go, then fine". But the attitude of and way we were treated by the waitress knocks it down to "Nope, not a chance". Overall, very disappointing because it seems like it could be a really good place. read more

So I was walking by and I noticed the Angry Beaver sign, which is awesome. I stopped and checked out their menu, and on the menu is "Calgary Style Ginger Beef" - I was so excited, as I am from Calgary, and Ginger Beef is a favorite of mine, and really hard to find outside of the province of Alberta. I looked at how it is made, and it bears NO resemblance of Calgary style ginger beef at all. I went inside to inquire from the waitress, and she said the owner is from Calgary, and he insisted that Ginger Beef be put on the menu. But of course he put his own spin on it. Originally it was supposed to be put on skewers for presentation, but apparently that didn't work out so well. They didn't both to change their menu tho. Calgary style Ginger Beef consists of double deep fried strips of beef coated in a dark sweet sauce that is reminiscent of other Asian sauces based on vinegar and sugar (e.g., the Japanese teriyaki). It also contains flavors of ginger, garlic, nik and hot peppers, and is commonly served with a small amount of julienned carrots and onions in the sauce. It is both sweet, vinegary and spicy. I asked if this dish was spicy and she was like oh no, this is just sweet from the maple syrup. There is no maple syrup in the Calgary version. My husband and I had our first date at the Ginger Beef Peking restaurant in Calgary. We would have LOVED it if someone had finally brought it down to Seattle so that we could get our fix of this heavenly dish. Sadly it looks like this is not the place. Hockey. Screaming Blackhawks fans. Chorizo poutine. This is absolute victory. During playoffs ,you'll want to arrive about 2 hours early to get a table. You can generally site a seat 15 minutes before game time during remedy season. They have several different sauces for their poutine. The beef, chorizo, mushroom, turkey (when they had it), and curry flavors have all been great. I also recommend the Calgary Beef appetizer. Just the right amount of sweet on it. read more

Came by the Beaver this past Sunday for their Jazz Jam and a bite, so glad I did! The bartender was wonderful and attentive, and the bar itself has everything you could ask for. Killer food! Smoked Brisquet plate was amazing, smoky and wicked tender alongside perfect hand-cut fries. Also had a giant Cesar Salad that was everything I had hoped it would be. Now, I am not a big hockey fan. I would like to see a Seattle hockey team but I probably wouldn't be paying too much attention to it. But I do think it is pretty cool to have a bar dedicated to hockey. I've been here a couple times and they have been pretty fun experiences. Not pretentious, caters to a sports crowd with a pretty decent beer selection. The food is pretty good too. I have had the burger which I liked a lot and the poutine which I though was really good. I think they could do a little better job with the décor. It looks like they just bought some stuff related to Canada and hockey and put it on the walls. But then again, they have a bunch of televisions with hockey games so that is about as much of décor as this crowd would care about. I love this place. The drinks are strong, our waitress happily listened to my Canadian step father talk about his love for Canada for a good ten minutes, and actually cared. She at least convincingly pretended to care. Their soundtrack consisted of all of my favorite Beatles songs, it wasn't too crowded, and the poutine is amongst some of the best I've ever had. My step dad said his blue cheese burger is the absolute best he's ever had, and he's an expert in the subject.
