Wasn't there during food hours, so this is really a review of the bar. Great ownership, cool bartender, and the great attached patio made this a great place for drinks after a hard day of "State Fairin'". Like a lot of places in Springfield, IL, this bar is on the site of one of Lincoln's law offices, but it's current best use is as a cool place to have (by Chicago standards) a really cheap good time. First of all, this place is absolutely filthy. We came in for lunch and we were very disappointed. Food was lukewarm and very bland. Not even close to authentic Mexican fare. Service was poor and there is no table service. Not sure what the attraction is here but I would not recommend ever going there to eat (or use the gross bathrooms). No thanks! read more

Where are these good reviews coming from? I'm not big on talking bad about places, but after today, I HAD TO!! This place is a DUMP! Cheesy music playing. You walk up to a counter to order, which would be ok..but girl behind the nasty counter was bothered that I asked if an enchilada came with rice and beans. (They don't have Mexican rice at this "Mexican" place). The "chicken enchilada" came out with canned chicken (you could smell that canned chicken nasty smell) in a tortilla with some disgusting sauce on top. I will eat anything and just couldn't get over the funky smell. There were three of us with different orders and cheese dip that was terrible! Who has ever had terrible cheese dip?!!! All 3 of us couldn't eat. DISGUSTING. Bathrooms were gross.... Here's an idea.....maybe just A LITTLE effort on your part, Alamo to make the place and food not completely stink? Wow, so bad. Place smells like a mildewy basement, food is ordered at a counter, if you want a beer it's very confusing how to get that. Sitting on the patio, service was quick, but the food was the worst Mexican ever. Burrito is literally a flour tortilla that's clearly been left out of it's grocery store wrapper to dry out, filled with canned beans that were slightly warmed up and shredded cheddar. Salsa tasted like ketchup with a little Tobasco added, chips were from a bag. Beer from tap was fine, but you have to sit outside to drink it to avoid that smell. Ooh that smell. Avoid. read more

Good place bad management, people here discriminate, very judgmental, and this isn't the owners fault this is purely management and staff. I've been over charged on my tab, repeatedly as a sign to not come back but I continued to come back anyways, then the other day the staff said "your no longer allowed here" do I get drunk @ bars yes am I loud sometimes yes! Hands down the best bar in Springfield. Nothing better than relaxing at the beer garden after work. The drinks are fairly priced and it's a great atmosphere all around. The only thing that could make this place better would be if it served food for dinner and not just lunch. Gotta have some grub when you start that after work drinking! The bouncer wouldn't let me in because I had an out of state license, my husband is military so my ID was from our last duty station. I'm almost 26 years old and they would not let me in because I did not have an Illinois ID. Do not go here if you do not have an Illinois ID, they will not let you in. read more

The food here was decent. It wasn't the worst burritos, but it was just alright. The cheese sauce was pretty good, and the service was fast. Just a few downsides. Again, it was just decent food, but for a low price. The only thing that really bugged me was the fact that they give you a cup of soda with 25 cent refills. I can't remember the last time I've had something like that happen. It wasn't even the price. It was just the principle of paying more for something that costs about a cent to make. read more

If I could give this so called "Establishment" no stars I would!! Myself, my sister, and a couple friends were visiting Springfield from 3 hours away. We walked in(were NOT greeted) and sat down at a table for about 5 minutes before an employee told us that we had to order from the counter before we sat. We put our orders in and we got Chicken tenders(that were the best part to our meal), Tacos (which had absolutely NO taste or taco seasoning on the meat) Chips and Cheese (the chips were stale and the cheese was unevenly heated) and Some sort of French fry concoction that was a soggy mess. After we were done eating the little that we did a couple of us got drinks and wanted to listen to some music and try to enjoy the rest of our lunch. The song came(which the volume was a bit loud) and not even 30 seconds into the song the bartender turned the entire touch tunes off. He asked if it was us that turned it on and rolled his eyes and shook his head when we told him it was us. Food was tasteless, environment is dingy and service was very poor. For starters this place has the best cheese sauce I've ever encountered.The chips&cheese/nachos are beyond compare.Put that sauce on a horseshoe and it becomes sublime. I myself prefer the italian beef shoe, best in the city by the way, but you cant go wrong with any of them. Don't want a shoe or a sancho? Grab a fish taco! Cause the're pretty good too. Listen , I've had almost everything on the menu and you can't go wrong. Couple that with the fact this is one of the few places that has Nattie Light and I'll give 5 stars any day. This bar is a bit dumpy. Bathroom toilets were questionable. I'm a big wine drinker and this place was not the place to get wine...they have baby glasses compared to other places in town. What was really odd is "never gonna give you up" played several times while we were there....I felt like we were getting Rick rolled every 15 minutes. Although this isn't a place to dance, there was space enough to do my white girl wobble outside in the beer garden. Plus side, it's opened really late so the crowd tends to be the stragglers from all the other bars rolling in for one last beer...makes for an entertaining bunch. read more

Besides having good munchies, this place serves at the Illinois Central Blues Club's showplace and is a sponsor. Coming from a small town and seeing great acts every Blue Monday for $3 is simply unbeatable value for great entertainment. I highly recommend it! read more

The Alamo is the best beer garden in Springfield. The owner was very accomodating to my needs when I hosted a party there. He supplied special catering supplies, helped me plan, and followed up to make sure that I had everything I would need. During the winter, it is a great place to gather, with 5 tv's supported with Direct TV and just about any sporting event one can imagine. On the few occassions I am able to be downtown for lunch, I enjoy their smothered sancho - very yummy! They have also been awarded the Best Horseshoe in town. Domestic buckets are cheaper than most places in town, and the same price everyday. Ilinois Central Blues Club hosts Blue Monday at the Alamo every Monday night, featuring Blues artists nationwide - truly, truly incredible Blues music, if you're into that. Although bad smells have been mentioned, one should consider this to be true of any old, original, and historical building in any city; just sit in any bar in Downtown Chicago or St. Louis, or live in such a building. Those of you who have, know, and also know it is not a constant or even weekly or monthly occurance. Typical Alamo crowd are the Legislature during session, as well as college / grad school age weekenders, to professionals all year round. People choose it regularly to celebrate special occassions. read more

As a 1st time visitor I was quite pleased with the band. They were awesome! However, I was not able to stay long and enjoy the evening as I had planned due to an inebriated patron that puked all over the back of my jacket and all over the floor! I'm guessing because she was playing your machines it was ok for her to stay and enjoy her evening! Well, I've tried this place for lunch twice now (thinking....I'll give it a second chance).......have to say I probably won't be back for the food. The bar looks cool....did not partake (unfortunately). The food is pretty bland. It is supposed to be a Tex Mex flare but no flavor. I got the Baja Fish Tacos the first time, as they were given the highest recommendation from the "server"/counter person. They were white fish with a mildly spiced "sauce" on a tortilla. Second time, I tried the Fajita. I got a "burrito" style taco with grilled chicken and onions. Again, not very flavorful. Our table had nachos and guacamole, cheese sauce and salsa. The guac was good as well as the chips. The nacho cheese and salsa were again BLAND. They have "hot sauce" on the table.....in a community bowl......didn't try that. A friend got the Mo-shoe....a horseshoe with nacho cheese.....not a good pairing. Another friend did the Mo-melt which is a cheeseburger in a hard tortilla shell----he said it was Very good!!!! So, bottom line.....go for drinks, Mo-melt or Guacamole! Not much else!!! Sorry! read more

I cant even give them one star!! I had the chicken taco salad,the chicken tasted like it was cooked last year,yuck. my husband had the beef taco salad, bland no flavor what so ever. The "homemade" chips,I think not and they were stale and the salsa? what was that??? This was my first time there and my last! do yourself a favor STAY AWAY!!
