    Seared Scottish Salmon
    Adam G.

The 1895 Grille is located inside the Holly Inn, Pinehurst resort's first hotel built in, you guessed it, 1895. Reservations are recommended and dress code is business casual. The ambience is top notch. We enjoyed the old school photos throughout. They provide complimentary bread with 3-4 different types. We tried the fried ricotta gnocchi for a starter, which comes with a vegetable bolognese sauce topped with balsamic. Think uber fancy mozzarella sticks -- they were delicious. For an entree, I got the Scottish Salmon, which comes with pesto spätzle, glazed carrots, braised red cabbage and mustard puree, topped with red onion agrodolce, brown butter walnut and rosemary crumb. Other than the salmon being served with skin side up, which I had not seen before, this dish was phenomenal. It had so much robust flavor in every bite, I'm not kidding when I say it was the best meal I have had in as long as I can remember. Overall, the food was outstanding, but we felt a bit rushed by the service. Our reservation was probably the last one of the evening (9pm), but for the price of this restaurant I would've appreciated a bit more patience from the wait staff. That said, the 1895 Grille still gets 5 stars in my book.

Out of all the dinning we have had so far at the resort this is hands down the best. The service was fantastic with them constantly but considerately checking on us, and providing wonderful suggestions. The chief clearly loves what he is doing and sent out a few extra goodies. You can also see it in all the dishes that go out. I would 10/10 recommend.

    Soufflé and tiramisu

We had an absolutely wonderful evening at the 1895 Grille and it should be a requirement on your trip to Pinehurst. They graciously created a refreshing mocktail for me, and my partner had an excellent Dark and Stormy. LittleJohn then served us their three excellent bread options, and let us know the Thomas Jefferson was his favorite. It was an incredible biscuit and while I was raving about it our server Miss V. came over with a printed recipe for me to make at home. It was such a kind and elegant touch, and that special attention puts 1895 in a category of it's own. For our meals I had the special MahiMahi and my partner had the She Crab Soup and the short ribs. I tasted his soup and I can say without a doubt it was the best I'd ever had. I'll be back for the soup alone. My mahi was excellent, and the short ribs were perfectly spiced and melt in your mouth. Our lovely shuttle driver on the way over recommended we order the chocolate soufflé for dessert which was nothing short of amazing. It's famous here for a reason! We also added the Tiramisu dome and it was incredible, rich and spongy and an excellent sized portion! It was one of the best dining experiences we had, such attentive and warm service combined with a meal we'll be thinking about for months to come. You can't miss the place, seriously.

Went here on the last night of our stay at the The Holly inn. My husband walked down and asked if they had any availability for two and told us in about a hour. We were fine with that so headed to the bar in the Inn for drinks. Didn't even get the drink finished and the host came and got us for our table. We were seated in the very back in a large booth which was perfect for us. The room is so beautiful and old and little dark. We had the works. We were given water options and asked if we had any allergies! We had scallops for apps, steak and lobster for my husband and I had the special which was fish and grits. My husbands steak was perfect and very tender. My dish was lovely and enjoyable. We finished our night with the creme bur-lee and delicious coffee. Our server was wonderful and everyone was friendly and great attention to our needs.

One of the best restaurants in Pinehurst. Service was exceptional. Best thing all night was the chocolate souffl!

We were seated in a back room at a long table, one of three. This room was warm and lovely. One table was already occupied, the other filled up shortly before we finished. From start to finish, our dining experience was wonderful. We did not have to worry about our little ones disrupting other guests, as the other party had little ones too. Our server, Madeline, was absolutely perfect! She was attentive without being intrusive. She had a good sense of humor and guided out decisions for food when we asked. She served us promptly and with a smile and made us feel so welcomed. I wish I could remember what everyone else ordered but I do know that my Pork Schnitzel was incredible! Also huge so I had enough for another meal the next day. When I return I will order the same thing. My husband brought a birthday cake in for me and our server brought that out at the end of the meal with plates and forks for everyone. We forced her to take a piece for her break, which she goodnaturedly did. There is only one tiny tiny thing to mention: It did take a long while for the 5 year old's drink and food to arrive. Not anyone's fault, it was very very busy. But try to explain that to a 5 year old. Rolls were served but they were too spicy for her. Or maybe the butter was spicy? Maybe feed your little ones something beforehand if you go on a busy weekend night, as we did. Kudos to the kitchen for pleasing so many different tastes so much, and for management for hiring Madeline who is a great asset to your restaurant.

The decor…read moreis eclectic (I dined under a large, colorful Dr. Seuss print) with fairly closely-spaced tables that keep the room buzzing. There's an upscale bar in the entry that had several seats open even when the tables were all full. I started with the crab hush puppies. What's not to like about fried dough after all, but I didn't really get much crab flavor out of them. The buttermilk and corn preparation came through more. The entree was a showstopper, though - grilled elk chops with a pomegranate glaze and country mashed potatoes. They were scrumptious, and the al dente vegetables cooked in with the potatoes gave them a nice toothsomeness. One of the best entrees I've had in quite some time. It's nice when a menu gives you a protein choice you don't see everywhere. Parking is fine, with a paved lot in front and spaces on either side of the adjacent street. Service was welcoming and efficient.
