Old World Charm with elegance and grace envelops your surroundings, coupled with exquisite service at the ready without being intrusive. Difficult to accomplish, poetry when executed well, as it is done here at The Holly Inn 1895. Every dish that came out was plated beautifully and with care, allowing your eyes to consume first, bringing excitement of the bite to come. It's been 2 years since we were last at 1895. I was very disappointed in the downfall since we last dined here. The oysters were the best part of the meal. The fried gnocchi were good enough. My husband and I shared the special (prawns) and the short rib. Both were very disappointing. The prawns were mushy. The short rib was undercooked, under seasoned and not warm enough. The 1895 Grille is located inside the Holly Inn, Pinehurst resort's first hotel built in, you guessed it, 1895. Reservations are recommended and dress code is business casual. The ambience is top notch. We enjoyed the old school photos throughout. They provide complimentary bread with 3-4 different types. We tried the fried ricotta gnocchi for a starter, which comes with a vegetable bolognese sauce topped with balsamic. Think uber fancy mozzarella sticks -- they were delicious. For an entree, I got the Scottish Salmon, which comes with pesto spätzle, glazed carrots, braised red cabbage and mustard puree, topped with red onion agrodolce, brown butter walnut and rosemary crumb. Other than the salmon being served with skin side up, which I had not seen before, this dish was phenomenal. It had so much robust flavor in every bite, I'm not kidding when I say it was the best meal I have had in as long as I can remember. Overall, the food was outstanding, but we felt a bit rushed by the service. Our reservation was probably the last one of the evening (9pm), but for the price of this restaurant I would've appreciated a bit more patience from the wait staff. Out of all the dinning we have had so far at the resort this is hands down the best. The service was fantastic with them constantly but considerately checking on us, and providing wonderful suggestions. The chief clearly loves what he is doing and sent out a few extra goodies. For a birthday celebration with my wife, the food quality was mediocre with the hot meals served jut warm. Beware of the 18% service charge thats applied to all checks. I found the place pretentious and lacking on service as well. And an expensive choice for the menu items. We had an absolutely wonderful evening at the 1895 Grille and it should be a requirement on your trip to Pinehurst. They graciously created a refreshing mocktail for me, and my partner had an excellent Dark and Stormy. LittleJohn then served us their three excellent bread options, and let us know the Thomas Jefferson was his favorite. It was an incredible biscuit and while I was raving about it our server Miss V. came over with a printed recipe for me to make at home. It was such a kind and elegant touch, and that special attention puts 1895 in a category of it's own. For our meals I had the special MahiMahi and my partner had the She Crab Soup and the short ribs. I tasted his soup and I can say without a doubt it was the best I'd ever had. I'll be back for the soup alone. My mahi was excellent, and the short ribs were perfectly spiced and melt in your mouth. Our lovely shuttle driver on the way over recommended we order the chocolate soufflé for dessert which was nothing short of amazing. It's famous here for a reason! We also added the Tiramisu dome and it was incredible, rich and spongy and an excellent sized portion! It was one of the best dining experiences we had, such attentive and warm service combined with a meal we'll be thinking about for months to come. You can't miss the place, seriously. read more

The food was superb for my four guests. The service even better. This was a special occasion which I mentioned when I called for reservations. I asked about champagne and a birthday dessert. She assured me someone would contact me prior to event. No one did and it had to be handled at the table which was embarrassing. We were also seated in a booth by the kitchen. Tip - when you call for reservations mention you do not wish to be seated in a booth by the kitchen unless that is acceptable to you. I have been here many times and it was always lovely - the food and the service both. You'll need to be proactive though if this is a special occasion. read more

Suitable service but poor execution with the whole experience. Starting off dinner requesting payment in advance and including gratuity is a recipe for disappointment. Ordered the Filet expecting that would be a simple and consistent preparation. The filet was grainy and I could tell it was thrown on the grill while still frozen. I should have expected disappointment when at the bar prior to dinner it took them 30mins to deliver the bottle of bubbly my wife and I ordered. Came here for a nice weekend with the In Laws. The guys played #4 during the day and the ladies spent the afternoon at the spa. All of us were hungry when it came time our 6:30 reservation at the 1895 Grille (definitely make reservations if you plan on eating here). The service was what you would expect at a place like this...impeccable. The guys each got the lamb which was delicious and perfectly cooked. The potatoes au gratin that accompanied the lamb were perfect. The ladies got the filet mignon which was also delicious and perfectly cooked. We liked that the waitress said you can substitute anything for anything. Don't care for turnips? Get asparagus instead. The only criticism is that this place is pricey but it is a top restaurant at Pinehurst so what can you expect. Food takes a while to come out but they provide delicious bread and other treats while you're waiting. Be cognizant that gratuity is already included in the bill so only tip extra if you want to. Went here on the last night of our stay at the The Holly inn. My husband walked down and asked if they had any availability for two and told us in about a hour. We were fine with that so headed to the bar in the Inn for drinks. Didn't even get the drink finished and the host came and got us for our table. We were seated in the very back in a large booth which was perfect for us. The room is so beautiful and old and little dark. We had the works. We were given water options and asked if we had any allergies! We had scallops for apps, steak and lobster for my husband and I had the special which was fish and grits. My husbands steak was perfect and very tender. My dish was lovely and enjoyable. We finished our night with the creme bur-lee and delicious coffee. This place is in beautiful downtown Pinehurst, in a beautiful building. The ambiance is fancy and the staff treats you like a VIP. For apps we got the fried green tomatoes and she crab soup. Both very good! Then we got an amuse bouche which wasn't really an amuse bouche in my opinion. It was a yummy garlicy butter of sorts we put on bread. It was good non-the-less. The filet was outstanding. We ordered it medium rare and it was like butter, melt in your mouth good. It came with a lobster mac-n-cheese which was sub-par. It was very average and the lobster was lost in it. Their specialty desert is a triple chocolate souffle and it was good but not mind blowing. I would say thais restaurant had a ok/good dinning experience while in the Pinehurst area enclave. I booked this restaurant thru the Pinehurst Resort hotel while we stayed there for a Saturday night dinner. We were staying at the Carolina Inn, but this restaurant is in the other Pinehurst property called the Holly. Easy transportation via Pinehurst Resort shuttle service whenever you want to go back and forth, or you can even walk it as it's not that far of a leisurely stroll; however, in the hot and sticky weather you're bound to perspire a bit since the restaurant supposedly requires jackets for the men, and with a lady with heels on I wouldn't recommend it so take the shuttle or drive. We arrived at the Holly Inn and took a brief stroll around it to check it out for the first time. Nice bar area, but sadly the live guitarist playing that evening was a little on the cheesy side for me, but to each their own. Just a little hokey playing with a karaoke sounding beat machine in the background. OK, now I have to note my first star deduction... We arrived at the restaurant and scanning the other patrons I was 1 of maybe 2-3 out of 30 or so men who had jackets on vs. men who did not. Why tell patrons you require jackets if you don't enforce it? Usually the more upscale restaurants that require jackets keep a coat room to fit the men out if they didn't bring one. Sure, some blame should be on the patrons who didn't bother with one as well, but in the end the restaurant was a bit lax on their policy then everybody is doing it and we were hopping for a formal occasion so it kind of cheapened the experience for us. As you can tell I was a bit peeved by this as I wanted it to be a special evening for my wife as a weekend before her birthday meal, but there are worse things to worry over, so water under the bridge... Service was very attentive and friendly. We had a head waiter and two assistant waiters who regularly checked in on us. Again they were very friendly but strike two was a couple of things: the head waiter didn't know some of the items on the menu, how they were prepared etc. and when we asked what their "California Sparking Wine" by the glass was on their menu it was a hunt down by the waiter to find out what it was and if we'd like some. Again, not the end of the world but when you're in a finer dining restaurant you expect waiters to *know* the daily menu. Being as we were staying at Pinehurst Resport our diner was included with the room stay, which was very nice convenience we just had to pay for extras and alcohol. So we each got to pick a starter, appetizer and desert. My wife got the she crab soup and I got the fried green tomatoes. My wife's soup was very tasty, but I found my fried green tomatoes a little heavy on the fried. Usually the better versions of this I've had usually have a light corn meal breading to let the tomato's flavor shine out, and a great binding flavor like a balsamic vinegar but this didn't have it for sure. We had a "taste" in-between, which honestly I forgot what it was as it was very bland whatever it was served on a crustini. For our main course my wife got the filet mignon with macaroni and lobster and I got the "surf and turf" which consisted of braised beef short ribs and lobster tail. Both my wife's steak and my braised beef short ribs were excellent and the lobster tail was tasty as well. We both didn't care very much for the macaroni and lobster though. It definitely didn't taste as good as it sounded, with a touch of unpleasant oder about it. Lastly we both had decaffeinated coffee and their chocolate flan that we split for desert and was very yummy. Tip: if you want this you have to order it at the beginning of your meal as it takes 45 minutes to prepare. All in all we were happy with the meal particularly the dinner and desert, but I don't know if I would return again and would seek out different dining options in the area as a first option. read more

Six of us from California were so looking forward to dinner here. However, the service was spotty. My rack of lamb had so much fat on it that I doubt I had more than six bites for $38. We had a lovely dinner at the 1895 Grille while in Pinehurst recently. We started with the beef carpaccio which was very tasty. my DH and I were splitting it and they split it for us and the plating was beautiful. After that I had the caesar salad and he had the she crab soup. The salad was a solid caesar, not the best I've ever had but far from the worst, but his soup was delicious. We split the surf and turf which was lobster and short ribs. Once again they split it for us and you would never have known what was on my plate was only half a portion, there was a lot of food. The lobster was the best I have ever had, it was cooked to perfection, not the least bit chewy or rubbery and the short ribs were quite good as well. We finished with the famous chocolate souffle and I must say that was my least favorite item of the night. Maybe I was expecting too much because of all of the rave reviews, but I thought it was just average. They had a nice wine list and surprisingly for Pinehurst the wine prices were not ridiculous.
