What a pleasant surprise. Our party of four had a lovely visit. Tonight was the annual Christmas Tree lighting nearby - total score to grab dinner here & walk a few feet to the tree!!! No need to worry about finding parking - tell the guy you have a reservation & he'll let you park right there (after checking the list, of course). Dinner was very very good - though it was buffet, appetizer and dessert were brought to the table, all-you-can-eat dinner was delicious (see photo for menu-we tried it all). Huge Salmon filets were unfortunately too thin to be served medium rare but still very tasty. I ordered the Southern style short ribs which had an average smoked finish but weak of the classic BBQ sauce. Bill's choice was the winner winner! Pasta Bolognese looked perfect. He almost asked for a teaspoon to finish every drop of their lovely sauce. Caesar salads were cold, crispy and perfectly finished with shaved parm. It's uplifting when your server smiles and laughs with her table's quasi witty remarks. A very pleasant young lady working a slow Tuesday dinner shift. Overall the Pine Crest is all about the elegant linen place settings in Pinehurst. Also our world gets smaller by the minute. A Real Estate agent who we just met, her brother was the owner over 15 years earlier. Over all the Pine Crest Inn is a lovely room. We have given the Pinecrest Inn several visits for dinner in the past and only once had a good meal. Its still a nice place for a drink but not food. This last visit was the final straw. It was their New England seafood buffet night. We had received an ad for the event and thought it might be good. When we arrived a server came to our table, took our drink orders and immediately asked what appetizers we wanted. We were a bit confused as it was supposed to be a buffet. But we ordered crab dip with pita chips. She promptly brought it to us and it was actually quite good. Next we went up to the buffet and as we often do we only took a very little of a few things just to try them and see what we really want to go back for. Well there was only two items possibly worth eating and we went back up to get those. Upon our return we were informed that we only get one visit to the buffet. This was nowhere mentioned in the ad nor were we told this by our server. He said he'd break the rule for the items we wanted. Heres the good news. We may have only had $5 worth of food for $29.99 each but it may have saved us from eating a lot of really horrible food. The bad news? The food. I will only describe what I had. A tablespoon of mac n cheese. It was the blandest, driest mac you could possible eat. I think it was American cheese slices over pasta. Next scallops over risotto. The risotto was also completely flavorless and so overcooked and dry that it was stuck to the roof of my mouth. They were stingy and only gave me one small scallop on the top. It too was so overcooked as to be absolute rubber but it did taste okay. Onto the fish and chips. Small pieces of haddock in batter. This was the best of the night but really only because the rest was so bad. There were no real fries with it. They were frozen crinkle cut fries from a bag baked, and were nasty. Lastly fried clams. Again frozen food, no detectable flavor, and it hard to detect if there were clams and not just breading. All of the dinner was just heated up frozen food except possibly the crab dip. I reason that I only have a set amount of dinners while alive on this planet, so I want to make them all count. There was nothing redeemable about this food and it may have taken off a few of those days. A few last things. Pinehurst is a retirement area so you expect plenty of seniors. This place was packed with the upper age of the word retirement with plenty of canes and walkers about. It truly felt like a nursing home. They have to eat too of course. But if your looking for somewhere a little more lively this is not the place. And I say that as a senior myself. Secondly, we did overhear a server mention the one trip to the buffet to another table so it was just that no one told us and the ad was deceptive. That table came back with mountains of this horrible glop and I was actually feeling a bit queasy watching them steam shovel it in and had to get outside fast. I kept telling my wife its time to go. This is an amazing part of golf history. Formerly owned buy Donald Ross. ( if you are a golfer I don't need to say any more) Hotel built in 1913. Very classic bar. ( the term is a " snug") Dining room and lodging. Inhabited by locals and visitors who have been coming for years. Completely historic and genuine if you are looking for that. We stayed overnight and enjoyed an included breakfast in the morning. as good as you'll have anywhere. Dining room full of golfers of all ages and local of an advance age. We came in for dinner last night for the German night for the first time. I can without a doubt say we will be back. The restaurant was exactly how I pictured it and felt very home like. We were seated very quickly and our table was ready to sit as soon as we got there. Our waiter was Sammy and he was a 10/10. He was so great with our 4 year old who he called his bestie. She loved it! The food was phenomenal and we were all so full. Even our kiddo loved it. The only downfall was it did smell a little smokey smelling inside but I didn't see any cigarettes. One of the many gems in downtown Pinehurst. It is said that many players have stayed here during major PGA tourneys and U.S. Open championships. Each of the rooms is themed after a player and many of those players have even stayed in those rooms. On Sunday nights, they bring out a little chipping mat and a practice target in the lobby. Went to Pinecrest Inn for dinner on Christmas Eve. Waited 15 mins to get seated. When we finally got a seat waited another 10 mins for a high chair after the host said he would get one. Had to go back and ask again. When we finally got to sit down the service was abysmal. The waitress didn't know the menu and only brought 2 dinner rolls for our party of 4. Took 30 mins to get the order for the kids and the food came out cold. And our meal came out 30+ mins after that and was cold and with the wrong sides. Water refills were scarce and had to ask several times. Several customers who seated after our party received their food and got their check before we got our food. The check was grossly incorrect and the waitress pretty much said "my bad." Food was awful and service was even worse. Didn't even stay for the included dessert. Highly do not recommend. If I could give less than 1 star I would. read more

Wonderful dinner experience. A special date night at a very historic place. The pork chop was the absolute best. That's all I ever order because it is the best chop you can get anywhere. It was our anniversary and we wanted to do something a little special. After church (early service) we decided to take a drive, and since we had spent the last night of our honeymoon in Pinehurst years ago we meandered through the country and ended up there. Looking for a place for brunch we looked at restaurants on the GPS in the car and found Pine Crest Inn. A quick look at yelp gave us enough to go on, so we headed there. We got there before the after-church lunch rush. The Pine Crest is a lovely, grand, old Inn. We were greeted at the door, and told about the brunch buffet. Our table in the dining room (#11) was by the window, and a two-top. Even so, it was not too small like some can be. The room has decor reminiscent of a bygone era, much like your grandmother's living room with large crown molding and heavy draperies. It was clean and comfortable, not crowded and hard to maneuver. Maybe it was my imagination, but I think the floor creaked when I walked on it. I sent my hubby over to check out the buffet in a separate room, and he came back with two thumbs up. Our server, Patti, couldn't have been more pleasant or attentive. Coffee came immediately and was never allowed to get cold or empty, and it was good. Ice water was already on the table. The buffet features Jerry who makes omelets to order. There is a good selection of fillings, and Jerry is friendly and excellent at what he does. They have whole egg or egg-white omelets. Folks, let me tell you, this omelet is huge! I was just sure I would never be able to eat the whole thing and I was not wrong. Nevertheless, it was fluffy and delicious, perfectly cooked, and just loaded with the ingredients I requested. Other offerings at the buffet are in steam trays under cover and consist of creamy grits, hash brown casserole, pan-fried potatoes, sausage patties and links, bacon, regular scrambled eggs, and of course, biscuits and gravy. There was probably fruit, too, but I was so gaga over the size of the omelet I didn't pay attention. Jerry helped me decide to have some of the hash brown casserole by confirming it was gluten-free. It was creamy and cheesy. We also ordered tomato juice from Patti who brought it while we were at the buffet. Even though our meal was serve yourself, she never ignored us. We heard her conversing pleasantly with all her tables, but never hovering so any were unable to enjoy their food while it was hot. You can also order waffles and pancakes from the kitchen. Patti brought huge waffles to the table next to ours and zoomed them by us for a quick look see. I'd have been really tempted if I weren't so incredibly full from the huge omelet, and oh yeah, I'm gluten-intolerant. She said she has been suggesting GF waffles and pancakes to the kitchen staff. Patti left our check with us a little earlier than we would have expected it and explained that since church was about to let out she would be bombarded soon, and didn't want us to have to chase her down, but that we could feel free to finish our meal without feeling rushed. She still checked back on us often enough and even offered coffees to go when we were ready to leave. Hubby looked at the check and said what a bargain it was. Patti got a nice tip and it was still way less than I would have expected for that much food and great service. We enjoyed this so much we have decided to make this an after-church destination once a month. And we'll probably enjoy the rocking chairs on the porch after eating next time. read more

Excellent sign you're in a top-notch place when in a touristy place. 3) Famous pork chop lived up to billing. 22 oz so it's a hearty meal with mashed potatoes and broccoli. This evening we went for German night buffet. Food was three star at best. This was the consensus of the entire group of 10 adults. The service was absolutely terrible. We were served pretzels (bread) with no plates to put it on. Drinks were extremely slow to come. Coffee and deserts were 10 minutes apart and finally when we got our bills we had to send someone to get the server to take them. Another 10 minutes in a room with a temperature over 80 degrees. The Pine Crest Inn is a welcome place resembling a lot of history. I stayed here while attending my son's college golf tournament being played at No. 8 this weekend. I enjoyed a dinner at the bar and chose the French Dip and Fries. It was very tasty and the bar was a festive area with many people conversing on various topics. I spoke to someone next to me about Kentucky basketball and he was a Duke fan so our common passion for college basketball in March was a good thread. Back to the hotel... I really like the front porch and layout of the place, even the sign which is a hand painted, classic style. In the lobby and bar area you'll find many cool things on the walls about golf and the area history. The men's room to the side of the staircase is even unique. They put an original golf ball washer in there for decoration, interesting and unique. The hotel room I got for the night was a corner room and included 2 queen sized beds, a couch and 2 nice chairs. What I loved about the room was a full sized floor to ceiling mirror - a great way to work on your golf swing. Staying at the Pinecrest Inn is an affordable alternative to staying in the Pinehurst Resort Owned Property and highly recommended for reliable, historical and classic value. read more

Been doing this several years now and I like the Iceberg Wedge (they should add candied pecans), the ribeye 'mit bone, mashed spuds and daily veggies. It's all good and reasonable.
