The Pine Crest Inn is a welcome place resembling a lot of history. I stayed here while attending my son's college golf tournament being played at No. 8 this weekend. I enjoyed a dinner at the bar and chose the French Dip and Fries. It was very tasty and the bar was a festive area with many people conversing on various topics. I spoke to someone next to me about Kentucky basketball and he was a Duke fan so our common passion for college basketball in March was a good thread. Back to the hotel... I really like the front porch and layout of the place, even the sign which is a hand painted, classic style. In the lobby and bar area you'll find many cool things on the walls about golf and the area history. The men's room to the side of the staircase is even unique. They put an original golf ball washer in there for decoration, interesting and unique. The hotel room I got for the night was a corner room and included 2 queen sized beds, a couch and 2 nice chairs. What I loved about the room was a full sized floor to ceiling mirror - a great way to work on your golf swing. Located in the heart of the Pinehurst village, it is easy walking distance to the main hotel, as well as the golf clubhouse. Situated in what appears to be an old residence, the Pinecrest features several dining areas, as well as it's central, dark bar area. If you do go, don't forget to get some saltines and the port cheese. Nothing goes better with booze than spreadable cheese. The staff seems friendly, and when you walk in, there is a real sense of camraderie with everyone. Highly recommended. It's a place that really celebrates civility, harnessing the spirit of sadly departed local legend, political titan and Pinecrest regular Ed Kennedy - the Pinecrest was a place that even mortal political enemies could shake hands and share a drink at the aged and timeless bar. Called to inquire about hours and reservations for breakfast today-- such an unfriendly person that answered the phone... we opted for Betsys Crepes and were so glad we did!!! Reeked of mildew when we were there. Manager promised us a complimentary birthday cake for the banquet room we booked, then reneged when it was time for the check to be paid. All the "golfy" enchantment seems to obscure the fact that this is just not a good value. read more

For last 7 or 8 years we have gone to the Pine Crest Inn for either Thanksgiving and/or Christmas Dinner. We keep coming back because we love the experiance of the grand old hotel and bar, the service, and the great food. We can highly recommend hoilday or any dinner engagement at the Pine Crest Inn, go early and enjoy the bar. read more

Gave the Pinecrest Inn a shot after recommendation by a friend . Food was greasy and just not that good , after being sick all night won't go back . Bartender conversations were inappropriate and other patrons left because of them, we should have also before the food . read more

I have eaten dinner at the Pinecrest at least a half dozen times, and it never disappoints. The late afternoon / early evening golf crowd on the porch can be festive/rowdy, but inside the dining room, the atmosphere is calm and relaxed. The food is excellent -- large portions -- so you may want to share an entree, and quite reasonably priced. Entrees include a soup or salad, veggie, and starch. I will definitely be back. read more

If the salmon was any more overcooked it would be dust. I've had lava rock that tasted more like salmon.

Terrible Christmas dinner. Alfredo was a tasteless bland soup of yuck. Had to load with salt and pepper to choke down. Shrimp was good though; all 3 pieces. Peach cobbler replaced with apple. Terrible mess. Strawberry crape when tiny and not tasty. Pecan pie was good. Hard to believe this is a premium place. read more

Best breakfast value in the county! Whenever we have weekend guests, we always bring them out for breakfast. Staff is professional and kid friendly. White tablecloth service, good food, good variety, great value. Rooms completely redone thhis winter in advance of the US Opens. read more

Great place for the fun bar scene! Do not stay. Very pricey and very shabby rooms. Maybe it's just a guys hangout, the bathroom and shower very sad, need two of the small towels to dry off! Come on no excuse for not having a Kleenex box in the room? The windows do open thank goodness because the cooking odors from the downstairs restaurant wake you up at 530! Always the same! Fabulous!! I enjoyed dinner there Saturday evening....after drinks on the famous porch, we proceeded to the dining room. Expectations are high, and again, they delivered. The wait staff was informative and entertaining with his descriptions of what was to come. The food is cooked to order, but was timely just the same. Fresh rolls just out of the oven...Two of us at our table enjoyed the Lamb Shank...to die for. We even shared a couple of desserts, again, prepared on site, not ordered frozen as seems to be the going trend even at more expensive clubs around town. If you'd like to do a little dancing after dinner, hang out a bit longer for music in the lobby area. Fun for all. read more

This restaurant is simply surviving on its history. The only thing that is worth going for is the Pork Chop. The rest of the menu is uninventive and boring. My wife's steak was poorly cooked. My scallops were tough and over cooked. The bartender did not know how make a Manhattan (you never shake brown whiskey). Our waiter was a wreck and very disruptive. For example he would ask questions about the menu and wine list and he had to go ask the bar tender multiple times. read more

Linguine and clam sauce was extremely creamy, as in classic white sauce and poorly cooked pasta. Lamb chops were good, but too much volume and not enough attention to presentation and prep of sides. Had a truly remarkable dining experience. Two of us had the prime rib with green beans. My wife had the Sea Bass and other son had the alfredo pasta topped with chicken fried steak. We all were amazed how good everything tasted. If in the Pinehurst area this place is a MUST. read more

I had breakfast here and the meal was average, and took 1.5 hours . I used the restroom upstairs for women and truly saw the state of this building . It is need of work and all I could think of is Hotel Impossible needs to come here. Wallpaper cracked, wooden staircase needs attention. The women's bathroom was at best Motel 6 , you have a mobile blowing fan on you while you do your business. Not a place I would recommend. read more

This review is for dinner - not an overnight stay, and I have to say the food was wonderful! I had the filet and it was cooked medium as requested and was tender and flavorful. It was accompanied by mashed potatoes and mixed veggies. The crisp wedge salad, prior to the entree had a generous supply of blue cheese and bacon. I'm a dessert person and find it can make or break a restaurant in my opinion and they aced it! Blueberry bread pudding - who know such a thing even existed? Warm, loaded with blueberries, topped with ice cream and with a helping of whipped cream- and then I waddled out the door. Great 100 year old building seeped in history added to the experience. We've been coming to this place annually for the last 10 years, sometimes twice a year. In the last 5 years, we have seen gradual regression. To start, losing Mr B was a big loss, not only for the inn, but for the community that frequented this place. The recent talent is inconsistent and not talent. The Inn should resolve its personal issues and bring Mr B back. The restaurant standard is failing. Not sure who the chef is, but he needs to go. The food is bland, unimaginative, soggy and boring. The specials???....well...there is nothing special. We spent Thanksgiving here and even tho we requested the main dining room, we were seated in the banquet room. By the time our small plate of food arrived (it had to travel 100 ft from the kitchen and through the bar) is was cold and sparse, swimming in a sea of gravy. If I were paying $28 for my meal (it was included in my room rate), I would have had a fit. Definitely not the standard 5 years ago. House guests should have preferential treatment, and be seated where they request, btw. The rooms are rustic and weathered. I agree there is some degree of charm to this place, but we always came back because of the meals and Mr B. The meals used to be plentiful and creative it and we looked forward to our visit, especially in the past few years. The rooms are OK....definitely nothing special. Sadly,this place is losing its edge. The people that work here are nice, but don't understand that you should never say NO to the customer. I am just writing about the outside bar and the inside pub. This is one of our favorite places to go for a drink. The staff is very friendly and the people who are considered regulars always have great stories to share. You will meet people from all walks of life and have a really enjoyable night. The food was very good, we had the small ribeye and the small New York, both were cooked perfectly and the side items were very tasty. The waiter was very attentive and knew a lot about the history of the place. This is a historical restaurant that is worth visiting because of its good food and history. A repeater. This is only for the bar (although I have stayed here multiple times & eaten @ resturant even more - - all positive experiences). We made the short 1 hour drive to Pinehurst last night for dinner. So awesome. Stopped @ Pinecrest for a pre-dinner drink. The bar was not crowded and service was friendly & fast. The cocktails were strong and inexpensive. Carl is the man. I love it here - - - come serveral times a year and always question why I don't go more often! Will have to change that in 2013. Highly recommend stopping in for a drink, a bite to eat or an overnight. Best place in town!! read more

Interesting restaurant. We enjoyed our food...my husband had the prime rib and I ordered the salmon. The veggies were also very good. But, I'm not sure we would return as the ambience really isn't our style. Maybe we should have dined in the pub? Anyway, the dining room is pretty stuffy and has an old school supper club vibe (your table gets a relish girl). The service was great but it was kind of awkward bc we were one of only a few tables in the whole dining room so I felt like we were on display. I think older people probably enjoy this place but we (early 30s) are not in their target market. read more

I went in this passed weekend for dinner on Saturday and the food was great along with the staff the waitress Sarah was wonderful and very upbeat my next visit I will be asking for her since she was so wonderful. She gave the best service I've seen in the pines since living in the area. read more

Dining in the bar is a wonderful experience due to the ambiance of this grand old institution. The meal service in the bar is outstanding. There is a separate bar menu with several offerings. I just had the best Reuben ever. My new favorite place to eat and have drinks. read more
