I first stumbled upon this shop about a year ago after checking out yelp to find a good place to buy eye glasses. I was looking for a new pair of glasses to replace ones that I'd just lost on a trip. Dennis was so helpful in finding just the right pair of glasses with his wide selection of different frames, so that day I purchased two new pairs. Less than a year later around 2 weeks ago, I noticed that my glasses were scratched from everyday use and so I went back to the shop to see what warranty I had left. Dennis not only switched out the lenses, he swapped out the frames of one of my glasses and replaced it with a brand new frame because one of the crystals had fallen out. I don't think most eye glass shops would do this but it's just a testament of the great work that Dennis does. I had heard about That Guy Eyewear, since I'd been putting their ads together for The Sacramento News & Review, until we had to shut down print operations due to the 'rona (RIP Alt Weeklies).* That Guy was part of a let's try this again, hopeful revitalization of our beloved yet neglected corner of the city on Del Paso Blvd. Sometimes shit happens and we can't do anything but move on. And so we do. Much to my surprise and delight, That Guy has found a new home in the OP. Just in time to replace my 6 y/o glasses! 2 pair--computer and distance. They beat up af. Dennis outfitted me with 2 new pair that are AMAZE! The frames he suggested were spot on. He took my preferences into consideration and came up with a pair I never would have been brave enough to choose on my own. They are FAB! More importantly, I can see. Like really, really see. That Guy Eyewear has customers for life! What seemed to take hours at other eyeglass shops, it took about half an hour here! We already had our prescription, we walked in, looked for eyeglasses, Dennis took measurements and we were out the door! When they came in, my husband, who has had difficulty getting the right pair of eyeglasses for years, put them on and said, "these are great!" He Is a very fine craftsman, in the true sense of what it means to be skilled in one's trade the way it was a long time ago when people took pride in their work. I waited a little while from the time I picked up my glasses to write this review because I wanted to be sure that I would be as happy with my glasses after a time as I was when I left Mr. Peterson's store. I am even more happy now than I was on that day. These lenses are so pure and clear that I forget I'm even wearing glasses. I had experienced a quality difference between lenses from some bargain stores and those made by my vision insurance plan. I did not know that there would be a remarkable difference between those made by Mr. Peterson for me, with sensitive eyes and a challenging prescription, and those made by my insurance plan. Visiting 'That Guy Eyewear' is like having your own glasses frame personal shopper! I had no idea what to expect but walked in after hearing a recommendation on the radio. His shop is filled with frames for what seems like all the ages...modern, hip, classic, traditional...etc. I grabbed a couple of pair and tried them on. Dennis grabbed a pair for me and I was blown away...they weren't like my usual go to style but they were exactly a perfect choice...sleek, sexy, classy, professional all in one! All in all I tried on 25-30 pair (I think I totally lost count). I had to finally make a choice and it was SO hard. I ended up purchasing the pair Dennis originally picked out he's just that good. I'm hopeful he soon fills his spot with a doctor on site...until then I will get my prescription from Costco and make my way over to his location to grab a pair of frames! Denis did an excellent job. My prescription is quite challenging to make lenses for. We had quite a time to get it worked out as it was discovered that for some weird reason the correction on the eye doctors equipment changes when the temporary glasses are put together by the eye doctor. Long story short; just that small oddity produced several challenges to work though. Denis didn't let that stop him though. I've put of getting new glasses for year, because the last time I tried to get new glasses I had a terrible experience at Costco. The lenses never worked no matter how many times they remade them. In the end they gave up and refunded my money. I talked to Dennis over the phone and he recommended an eye doctor that I was very happy with. I still had problems with the glasses he had made, but he kept on till it was right! He recommended using "the moon rock" lenses and it worked! He never made me feel bad about having to redo the lenses. I had him do lenses for sunglasses when he came up with the solution to my very difficult eye prescription. Dennis has been great to help me with my transition to BIFOCALS! I stopped in a few months back looking for low cost exam and frames with lenses. He recommended me to Costco for the exam because I have no vision insurance. I went to Costco in Roseville had an exam done and hightailed it back to That Guy Eyewear to order my very 1st pair of glasses in my 46 years of existence . He was super cool and helpful. I told him I would need a while to come up with the full amount of the glasses and he was nice about it. It took me a month but I got the money together and went back. He ordered the glasses and they were ready in a week. When I went back in he assured me that it would take some getting used to the no line bifocal and told me to call with any questions. He was right! After 2 weeks I decided that the no line needed to start higher and went back to him. At no cost and without hassle he ordered new lenses and they were back in another week. I was so excited that I could see again... Yay me.. I have since saved and gotten sunglasses from Dennis with my prescription. Just went into That Guy Eyewear to pick out a new pair of glasses because the frames I have, I've had for about 5 years and I knew I needed new ones. My family had been telling me to go see Dennis for months, and so I went in today with my sister on my day off. Dennis was super awesome and helpful, and being in there looking for the glasses that really felt like they were right for me and my personality made me feel like I was at Ollivander's Wand Shop. He helped me try on 10-20 different frames and was very patient with me as I was trying to decide which frames would help me to be the new me. I chose a pair, and he set to work putting the order in for the lenses. They should be ready in the next day or two, which is a huge relief because it normally takes my eye glass place about a week or two. And his prices are great, so I think I might be back in a couple of weeks to get the other pair that I liked. So that I can finally have a backup pair of glasses that aren't a prescription from a couple years ago. Definitely recommend to anyone on a budget who needs new glasses or even someone who just wants to upgrade the pair of glasses they already have.
