I was trying to look for an optometrist that accepts my health insurance plan and had called three different places. They kept referring me to Sactown Eye Care but they never answered and I'm glad they didn't because I would've never gotten the chance to meet Dr. Louie. I was one of their first appointments so I was the only one there upon arrival, however, more people quickly showed up once they took me to the back for my eye exam. Even though I was early, the staff were ready to check me in and begin my eye exam. I unfortunately didn't get the names of the two girls but both were friendly and professional. The one who took me to the back and conducted the first part of the exam asked me a couple questions regarding past visits, any medication I'm taking, and about my family health history. Afterwards, Dr. Louie took over and began the second portion of the eye exam--y'know the one where they ask you if 1 or 2 looks better and if you can read the smallest letters possible. I told him about my mom getting diagnosed with glaucoma and that she recently had cataract surgery for it. I appreciate that he actually did an eye pressure test to check if I might be showing any early signs of glaucoma. He showed me pictures of my retina and explained in detail what exactly he was looking for and what the nerves would look like if I was showing signs of glaucoma. Thankfully, everything looked normal and my vision hadn't worsened. I have astigmatism in both eyes and Dr. Louie told me that it shifted a bit in my left but that my eyes were healthy overall. He led me outside to go pick out some frames. I went with his suggestion for one of the cool looking hexagonal ones. He even fixed my old glasses for me by tightening the screws since one of the lens kept popping off. He also helped me adjust the temples of my glasses so that I no longer have to push my glasses up the bridge of my nose. He explained that my new glasses likely won't be ready until 2-3 weeks from now since they have to get shipped from a Medi-Cal facility but that makes sense. Also--they validate parking so long as you park in the Downtown Sac garages. They'll hand you a printed QR code to scan after you put the ticket into the pay machine. Simple enough and highly convenient! I had a wonderful experience with Dr. Louie and highly recommend coming to him for routine eye exams. I can't wait for my new pair! Have you been wearing glasses your whole life and need a general eye exam for a new prescription, but you have Kaiser and they wont book you an appointment since its COVID and you are not having emergent vision changes but you want an appointment right away and a cheap one, too? Wow, that was a mouthful. If any or all of the above pertains to you, I have found your spot! LOL. ***General Eye Exam + Retinal Imaging= $65*** I called multiple Optometrists in the West Sacramento, Natomas, and Midtown regions and asked prices for general eye exams. They ranged anywhere from $120-200!!! Insane! I even checked LensCrafters, which is your next cheapest option: ~ $75! It really shouldn't cost this much, after all my vision has been healthy and I just wanted an update prescription. I was able to get an appt the same week with Dr. Kwong. The receptionist surprisingly ran my insurance through the system while on the phone with her to check my coverage. Her office is located on a busy street in midtown, across the way from Temple Coffee. Parking on the street (metered). They are currently practicing COVID measures by limiting the amount of patients in the office and monitoring fevers and enforcing masks (obviously). The office is small and old, but gets the job done which is all I ask for. Dr. Kwong was incredibly patient. Visit did not feel rushed and she really took the time to explain in detail what she was looking for and any changes she noted in my prescription. Staff is also super friendly. Gives me more family-run business vibe vs a commercially-owned glamorous one. Overall visit took about 30 minutes. read more

This was my first time here. Super quick I booked an appointment at 10am. There they took my temperature had me sign in. (Even the Little details of having a pen her after pens have been used by customers wo they can be sanitized after) was noticed. Dr. Kwong did my exam she was personable, explained every test quickly. I was done in really about 10min and it didn't feel rushed. I went through every test I always have. She ran through all the shots of my eyes based of my history and explained what I should look for an let me know where I was at. I didn't look for frames so it was a 15min appointment in total. When it comes to Optometrists, I generally have no loyalty. Maybe it's because I have been wearing glasses since the second grade, but I have a fascination with designer glasses. Yes you can purchase them online; however, I love the convenience of walking into an Optometrist office and being custom fitted with a pair of glasses. Back in 2010, per recommendation by a fellow co-worker, I decided to check out Dr. Kwong's office. My prescription hadn't changed, so I bypassed the eye exam and elected to choose a new pair of frames. The guy who assisted me was extremely patient and did a great job in assisting me with selecting a stylish pair of Joseph Abboud frames. Unfortunately, I made the silly mistake of adding transition lenses to the frames (the only reason why I don't currently wear them). Last week I visited Dr. Kwong's office for both an eye examination and to select a new pair of frames. Per my arrival, Dr. Kwong took me to the back room and started the examination process. Unlike other optometrists, Dr. Kwong is VERY forthcoming when it comes to sharing optical information with her patients. She did an excellent job of explaining what a healthy optic nerve looks like (thankfully I'm still part of this club), and what an unhealthy optic nerve looks like due to Glaucoma or trauma to the eye. Outside of the typical eye exam (read the smallest characters possible), I have never had an optometrists take the time to fully explain the eye in detail (I almost felt like I was in school again). After the eye exam successfully concluded, I was led out to the main floor to select a new pair of frames. One of Dr. Kwong's assistants helped me select 5 frames that we agreed upon. After narrowing down the selection to 2 frames (based on how the frames complimented my face), we ultimately decided on a new pair of Joseph Abboud (this lady has great taste). I was told that my frames would arrive in a week! Informative eye exams, decent selection of frames, and most importantly...EXCELLENT customer service! read more

I have been going here for many years and it was just average customer service Recently I stopped going there because the last couple years the service has been getting worse. They use family members that are inexperienced and seemed only work for a month and go back to College or move on to their other job. I started go to other Optometrists because the equipment is outdated and really really old. I started going to Walmart for eye exams because they use up-to-date equipment and my prescriptions are getting better going there. Last week when I went to see doctor Kwame I got a "for glasses and my out of pocket price was $230.i was offended because i was going there for years ! . The young man behind the counter was inexperience And frantic as he was making mistakes getting customers frustrated he then set out loud that hes making mistakes because there are too many people in the store. I went to vision plus on 9th street and a they gave me the exact same options that doctor Kwong gave me but the price was only $150 out of pocket. Best and most friendly optometrist ever. The receptionist are all extremely friendly and they always greet you once you walk in. She has been my optometrist for the past 13 years!! I'm sad I had to switch optometrist because she wasn't accepting my medical insurance anymore. However, I still try to drop by and say hi once in a while. She never overcharges you and always explain why there's a certain fee. The only downside to this area is that there is very limited parking. My mom usually puts in 2 quarters in the meter and we are good to go for the entire appointment. She is my favorite!!!!! Can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet. The whole staff is amazing. Set an appointment for me and my husband. Got a reminder call the day before our appt. Went in and they handled everything so quickly. We barely had to fill out anything. I was seen first. Dr. Kwong was super informative and explains everything to you. Shows you the pictures of your eyes let's you know what means what. Pretty cool. Then I went out to look at frames while my husband had his exam. So I'm browsing when the adorable Kitty comes over and starts looking with me and having me try different ones on. I love that she was totally honest when they didn't look good on me. So I kept browsing on my own and finally found 2 pairs of frames. I was going to wait for my husband to see what he thought of them. Then Kitty came and sat in front of me and said, "OK, let's see!". Geez, she's so cute. So I tried them both on. Her response, "These fit your face more, they're more feminine. But these are just so cool". Hehe. Loved it. Any who, my husband comes out and we start to look for his frames. Kitty starts looking too. She also made it a point to find frames that were covered by our insurance. We hadn't even mentioned anything about needing to stay under a certain price, but that was very much appreciated. They weren't trying to up sell us. Just genuinely wanted to help. I have been going here since I was little, I'm now 23 and live in the bay area, and I still wait until I visit home to have my eye exam (since I only go once a year, it's worth it to wait). First off, she is efficient but maintains fabulous quality. Her prescriptions are always right on the money. She's definitely good at what she does and this is probably the most important part of her practice. Second, the prices are incredibly competitive, I've had optometrists here (palo alto) quote me up to three times the price for the same service and try to be sneaky about it. People hell bent on squeezing every penny out of you aren't going to give you the best service anyways. Dr. Kwong is always amazing at getting me the most bang for my buck/insurance coverage. Third, my vision situation is a little bit complicated but she accommodates me wonderfully. I wear contacts, and like to sleep in them (so I buy ciba night and day 24 hour monthly lenses) but I also play water polo and need to swim with no goggles and my contacts in. For this I get dailies with a wide curvature so they don't fall out. Fourth, I think she's just a wonderful person, very friendly and kind and so is her staff. I hardly ever write these reviews but she deserves it, something I realized even more so when I looked into finding a more local optometrist and found more devoted business people rather than health providers. After having had a GREAT experience with Dr. Kwong in 2014 my insurance company forced me to see another eye Dr. last year(for a cataract exam and regular exam)... Long story short, that Dr. was surly and seemed angry the whole time and ended up giving me a bad prescription(Royo Eye and Laser. See my review for what NOT to do)... Thankfully I was able to get in to see Dr. Kwong. Her staff is awesome, I got into see her immediately(even though I was 10 minutes early) and she was patient, professional and just plain nice(which for me counts for a TON.)...She did my exam, fully explained both the glasses and contact lens prescriptions and even gave me some sample contact lenses with my new prescription... Then when it came time to pay when she told me how much I owed her I just didn't think it was fair so offered $10 more than she asked for. Yes, I tipped my optometrist. I chose to come here for needs because they take my insurance (VSP) and got excellent reviews on Yelp. Additionally, I like to support local businesses when possible, and the location is very close to my office so it made sense all around to visit Helen Kwong. I went in to have my eyes checked on 1/21 in the afternoon. My experience was very pleasant. She was able to check my eyes and give me a new prescription and she also taught me about what she was doing along the way. Then, when I went to place my order for new contacts, she said she would be able to place it as a 2015 order on my insurance because I had called in 2015 to set up the appointment so that's when the claim was opened. She informed me the contacts would likely be ready for pick up the next day! Sounded great. And since I already wear contacts, I didn't have to pay for a contact fitting which was nice. I ordered three boxes of contacts and paid for them while I was in the office (my insurance didn't cover the full cost). Well, I never received a call from them on 1/22. In fact, I had to call the following week on 1/27 to find out what happened with my contact order. I was informed that my contacts were not ready and it would be 7-10 days from when the order was placed on 1/21. I was okay with that as I know they can't always control those sorts of things. Well, I just placed a call today, 2/10 to find out what the status of my contacts is because I still haven't heard from them! They don't have my contacts and don't have an explanation. The reception staff believes the order was never placed and that the Dr. only ordered me samples. They informed me they do have samples. They think there was a confusion. Well, 1) I paid for the contacts already because I wanted three boxes, not just a sample. 2) if they thought I wanted a sample first, why didn't they call me to inform me there was a sample ready for me to try? 3) I also need new lenses for my frames, and I was told that i would be contacted when I can drop my frames off (they advised about five days from 1/21). They still have not said I can drop off my glasses for new lenses. I am optimistic they will make it up to me and be able to get contacts for me ASAP, but I am very frustrated not only that they completely dropped the ball but that I was the one who had to follow up with them and alert them to their mistake. It seems they completely forgot about me the moment I walked out of the door. We will see if/how they make it up to me, but I feel that others should be warned that while my service in the store was great, it has been very frustrating actually getting anything from them. read more

We made an appointment and we're dealing with insurance while waiting for appointment and a day before our appointment they called and canceled our appointment without asking. We were eligible and the insurance company was sending fax in to them with info that day and they could not be patient and wait. They called daily asking same questions as I waited to hear from insurance. At the end of it all my daughter was able to be seen I had letter to give to them and they canceled without even checking... Just really unprofessional since we would have just paid and got reimbursed if we needed to but they were extremely pushy and rude. read more

Excellent overall experience. Because of my company's new insurance policy i had to gamble on a new optometrist, thanks to everyone's reviews i chose correctly. Doctor Helen is nice and very knowledgeable and the whole appointment was quick. All my questions about eye health were answered and the insurance mumbo jumbo was explained clearly. To single out an example of excellent service: I could never see the numbers inside the color test ever since i was a chile, then the doc gave me a red filter to put over my eye and i could see every single number, it was fun and enlightening, now i know what cones i lack in the eye and possible remedies...that's excellent service that no prior eye doc ever bothered to show me. will be going back yearly. read more
