I was in the mood for a good burger for carry out, and hadn't been here in a while. I had also never used the drive thru since you can order food this way now. Expecting a long wait, I was pleasantly surprised that while I was asked to pull to the side, my wait was only 5-6 minutes. I ordered a combo meal and when I got home my food was still hot. The burger was as good as I remembered! Fresh, quality beef and prepared exactly how I requested. I upgraded to the Parmesan truffle fries and while they tasted great, TBJ still cannot seem to make crisp French fries. They were again soggy as always and very disappointing. I remember my daughter loving their burgers/patty melts and always telling me to skip the fries. They really need to work on that. For a $16 combo meal I would expect better. This was my first visit to That Burger Joint. (Drive thru). I was the only car in the line (late lunch). It took about 10 minutes from the time I ordered until I received my order. The fries were still warm (though a little soggy) when I arrived at my destination (abt five minutes). I do love skin-on fries though, and I enjoyed them. The burger was ok -- not hot, not really warm either, a little too much sauce. I am willing to try again but I'll probably have to eat in the restaurant. Tried Burger Joint for the first time, it was pretty solid. The burger itself was very good and cooked fresh. The fries we're severally undercooked. They need to double fry them so they can be crispy. It was definitely pricey and I believe that is due to the emphasis on the quality and freshness. I love this place and have been coming here for over 8 years I believe when they first built it and have enjoyed it ever since. Every time I come here there's a lot of energy and a lot of fun as there are very young people working here which is great to see. It is connected and shared in the same building as the Oberweis dairy and ice cream shop which is very convenient. The food is made fresh the portions are very generous which I enjoy. During this pandemic it is great that I can still order food from here and pick up and enjoy it. Although this is fast food it is not greasy or oily. While on the way home from the North Suburbs, I had a taste for a burger that was not of the McDonald's, Wendy's, or Burger King variety. Google pulled up That Burger Joint, so I tried it out. The burgers and fries aren't bad, from my one visit. The Oberweis that shares the building location makes the shakes, malts, and ice cream desserts, which means you're getting something good from them. That's where it ends. That Burger Joint and the Oberweis seem staffed by tweens who would rather be elsewhere. It's an appalling suburban and privileged kid attitude that I've noticed. I can't stress this enough: customer service is everything. As enjoyable as the food and ice cream were, I'll wait until I get back to Chicago proper next time I'm hankering for a burger. read more

This place is reminiscent of Five Guys, Portillo's, and Epic Burger at Old Orchard/Westfield mall... Where they cook your burgers to order. It's nice to customize your own burger and there's def no complaining on this end of its increasing popularity! Anyways, "that junior burger" is the perfect sized burger for me. For bigger appetites "that burger" has two beef patties. A large order of fries comes in a medium-sized cup, enough to share between two people. I got the "petal sauce" on the side to dip the fries, which is similar to the creamy paprika sauce that usually comes with fried onion blooms. Most toppings are free except for cheese (50 cents) and bacon ($1), and you have the choice of a regular or pretzel bun. My favorite topping was fresh jalapenos on my burger. It was spicyyyy. (I wish they offered fried eggs as a burger topping though!) It's also a plus that oberweiss is right next door. They share different sides of the same building... So getting dessert (if you have room) is very, very easy. I think the current average of 2 stars for this place is a little low- they've just opened. The food is great at That Burger Joint. However, ordering ice cream on the That Burger Joint side of the restaurant is painful. Today, my wife wanted a Black Cherry Milkshake, no problem it went through just fine. My son wanted a Black Raspberry Chocolate Chunk shake, problem. The That Burger Joint personnel INSISTED that Black Raspberry Chocolate Chunk Ice Cream was seasonal and they didn't currently have it. Amazingly it is on the menu, see photo, however, the person taking our order again insisted they didn't have it... I even had to ask the Oberweis cashier if they had it. They said yes, of course we have it. So finally, I had to order the second milkshake for Black Raspberry Chocolate Chunk Ice Cream on the Oberweis side of the Joint. Uggh.... read more

Well had a craving for both Oberweis and That burger joint since I had a craving. All is well however I probably will not come at this particular location after experiencing the disappointing limits of dining in and a somewhat aggressive confrontational staff on the that burger joint side of the establishment. If photography is forbidden to staff members than please post a noticeable sign about that. I understand I guess the privacy of certain employee not wanting to get pictured despite the open kitchen at that burger joint cooking but due understand that their will be a gray area of people yelping, using Google and trip advisor to post reviews on their dining experience despite the pandemic. If such the case you do not need to be aggressively hostile towards the customer next to a manager to be so aggressively confrontational. Other than that beware by accident not to do this otherwise That Burger Joint staffing will scold you like a bad child who didn't know or understand why or what went wrong while waiting and taking pics for other viewers to see the ambiance. My family and I always love to eat at That Burger Joint, not only of the finest whoppers in city but also with their delicious desserts. The children would love their kids meal size, perfect for their taste and appetite. Beef burgers are not the only available dish on their menu. There are chicken, pork bacon, and even fish burgers. A double quarter pound whopper is not a complete meal if you don't have jalapeno cheddar bites and a glass full of coke. The place is clean from bottom to top. The restaurant smell and feels good, the people inside are welcoming. Nonetheless, all of the food on their menu is nothing like other fast-food restaurants could offer. That Burger Joint also caters, people that love to eat veggies only without meat. They have a diet coke for those health-conscious people. We tried every food on their menu, and it was all DELICIOUS. How far did I walk for this burger? 13.84 miles and 2k calories. Being older and gotten heavier I walk long so I can earn the calories for a burger. I lose 35lbs and get to eat my burgers. We were waiting for a coupon or a groupon and one finally came by mail. Then I read the mediocre reviews, sigh. But After trying the That Burger ( two big patties) with everything, I would have to say that it was a darn good burger. Flavorful and the multitude of condiments and ingredients brought the inner big pig/hungry Bears fan/hearty eater out of me. I was full and the fries could be a little crispier. The fries come in a tall cup and perhaps this may affect the crispness? All in all, I'll be back to try everything on the menu. How I would describe their burgers: Big & Bland. They have a lot of options for toppings, 50 cents extra for cheese. Extra points for having the option of a pretzel bun, but even that couldn't save the burger. I'm not sure if they are going for a low-sodium thing, but everything on and including the burger patty was pretty bland. Out of everything I included on my burger including the meat, grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, lettuce and tomatoes, the bun was the most flavorful part of the burger. The fries were pretty good though, and I like how they have "Cajun" and "Smoky" spices to sprinkle on your fries. Maybe next time I will sprinkle some on the burger too. Overall the burger was okay, I liked that it was pretty decently sized the flavor just wasn't there. It does tend to run a little pricey; a regular fries and the junior cheeseburger left over an $8 dent in my wallet. Definitely satiated my hunger, but wasn't super satisfying. read more

Unimpressive Burgers, bad value. Wanted to try a new burger place in Skokie. But wish I didn't. Dropped $50+ on 4 "that burgers" (2 patties), 4 hotdogs, and 3 "large" fries for my family. There was a pretty long line, about 10 people so I just chatted with the workers and took some pictures. The workers and managers are pretty nice, but just learning the ropes. I told them that I was going to put them on yelp. After we finally ordered (need to streamline the ordering process with the multiple toppings - I suggested their computer ordering screen keeps the same order as the toppings on the menu) it took about 25 - 30 minutes to get our food. Even after I told them I was going to put them on yelp, they messed up my order. We ordered different toppings on all 4 burgers, but everything came in a silver paper wrapper - nothing to distinguish them from each other. I just trusted them on the order. Long story short, they forgot 2 hotdogs and a bunch of toppings on 2 burgers. Fries are ok, but the "large" is as big as a McDonalds small drink. Burgers are messy and unimpressive. $3 hotdogs, $6.50 double burgers, not worth it. Go down across the street to McDonalds, down the street to Portillos to get a tasty burger, or drive farther to Five Guys or Meatheads for a better value. Back in 2012 my buddy Tino M. posted about his experience trying the Joint. There was an expletive explaining that the burger sucked. That was information enough for me. So my visits, if any, were limited to frozen dairy snacks from the Oberweis counter. Two businesses occupy the same address under one roof. Although milkshakes can be ordered from the Joint and are made by Oberweis. Fast Forward; the other day I was running errands through Skokie. Not having much time to go elsewhere, I opted for convenience. I hoped for a burger, preferably turkey and a salad of any kind. I needed two and quickly. WELL, they don't have turkey. They offer beef or chicken. The chicken can be breaded and fried or grilled. Healthier options aside, they also feature a signature sandwich, a few other main staples like a patty melt, hot dogs that are split then topped and fries. Your fries can be garnished with different salts after prep ie regular salt, cajun, etc. What did I eat? I say this with curiosity because I'm still unsure. It was a bread product that was both rubbery and moist. I believe they said ciabatta. The meat was tasteless. The toppings although plentiful had no aspect of flavor that contributed to the sandwich. Chopped avocado and pepper jack cheese. This was a to-go order which traveled less than 10 minutes. In that time and due to being wrapped in aluminum foil the burger was moist. The bread had a strange texture but maybe it was a few days old to begin with. Ciabatta is great within a few days of being exposed to air. This was a few days past its prime. The cheese had congealed and thinned out. The flavors were not working. I had to douse it with hot sauce and ketchup to get it down and yet I didn't finish it. It felt like slop. I paid $10 bucks for a wet mess. The fries were pointless and not worth the stomach space. Like the fingers of an Egyptian zombie unearthed and tossed into a bag with seasoning. Old, frail and dried out from its tomb. From experience I knew eating overcooked frail fries could wreck my innards, so I consumed those few pieces that were thicker. $30 dollars wasted. (Could have been better spent at Five guys, Small Cheval, Kuma's, heck even Portillo's! etc) If I could get my money back that'd be great. The meal was garbage. A solid spot for lunch in the Skokie area. This place has the best chicken sandwich I've had anywhere around and I'm here pretty much once every week. I've only had the burger and the chicken sandwich here before and both are delicious and of good value. The chicken sandwiches use big pieces of chicken and fried in a way that's still tender and juicy, but crispy at the same time. The burgers are flavorful and are not soaked in grease like at a lot of other places. The portions here are on the larger side and the food is very consistent from each visit. The staff here are friendly and the service is quick. Overall, this place checks off all the boxes for a go-to lunch spot, and I will continue to come here as long as they keep making those addictive chicken sandwiches. read more

First, Before we even decided to go there, we called @ 2:10 pm and asked specifically if there's any restrictions and requirements e.g face mask and the staff who answered the phone loudly and clearly says "NO" . We got there, only to get treated offensively impolite. I was there to support your business and willingly spend my money, instead I got rudely treated. Yes, I was mad because I was told on the phone that there's no restrictions needed to dine in but apparently I needed a mask to order, and in my book that is a restriction. Your employees needed more training. What's more maddening is they offered a mask afterwards after all the commotions which is so unprofessional. What they should have done in the first place when they saw me without mask is to offer me one instead of telling me to get out and "they cannot serve me". Also, if worried so much about the masks, what about your dirty tables? Meh. TBJ is an alternative to the McDonalds across the street. However, anyone looking for a solid burger would fair much better going to the Portillos, Epic Burger or Five Guys nearby. Running with such a limited menu is gutsy. It makes the customer feel like TBJ has it all figured out. That those items are rock solid. Unfortunately, TBJ should go back to the drawing board. I ordered a That Burger with a side of fries. The pretzel bun sounded better than it tasted--bland, soggy and without the subtle tang and chewy-ness one expects. That Burger has two mediocre quality, unseasoned fried patties cooked to gray. No crisp edges or unique flavor profile. Add to that your choice of a variety of uninspired toppings and a side of pretty forgettable fries. In short, there is nothing about That Burger Joint that would bring me back. Let me start by saying that when I take the time to write a review about ANYTHING, it means something either was exceptionally good or something was distasteful. This is the latter. We decided to give it a shot since it was brand new and got some radio hype. Upon entering the place, we immediately noticed that the garbage bins were overflowing. They are not the standard trash units as a Portillo's or a McDonald's where they hide the contents. They are literally taller cylindrical open top trash bins, one positioned near the door and one positioned near a booth. Not a very appealing view, especially to a first time customer. Menu: I like the simplicity and the idea/responsibility of organic-everything but something leaves it a bit lacking. You have the option of a junior burger (1 patty, $5), "that burger" (2 patties, $6.50), "that chicken" (1 chicken patty, $6), hotdog ($5?) , fries ($2 for small, $3 for large) and a drink $1.50. The toppings and condiments are free (except cheese and bacon). Taste: We got 2 juniors on pretzel buns, a large fry, and 1 drink totaling $16 and some change. There was a bit of a sticker shock as there are competing restaurants in the area that give more bang for the buck. The meat was greasy and mundane. There was simply no taste. Gourmet boca burgers have more distinctive flavor and character than this flat-pounded pile of air. The condiments had more texture and taste. The meat had zero presence inside the "burger." The fries didn't taste fresh. They tasted and had the temperature as if they were reheated from yesterday's batch. Luckily, salt and ketchup were around to make them acceptable. Service: If I'm going to pay that amount of money for a burger, at least get the toppings correct. I didn't want pickles but I had wanted tomatoes. They did exactly the opposite. I asked the person behind the counter if I could just get extra tomatoes in a cup or something and then they counter-asked me to physically see the burger, as if I was making it up or something. After their professional review of the burger, they asked if I had wanted another burger in place of it. Luckily I am not THAT petty and was satisfied with extra tomatoes given in a napkin. Here's why: 1) $5.00 for a junior burger? $6.50 for a regular? Why not call it a single and double, end the confusion and drop prices by a buck and a half. 2) So with the long list of stuff you can get on your burger, only petal sauce and mushrooms are the new and exotic offerings. 3) Petal Sauce - a mixture of ketchup, mayo, and horseradish. Lame. 4) Everything's ala carte like oooh fancy but the decor has coal miner's timber look to it. And Oberweiss is on the other side of the Mason Dixon line doing their own thing. 5) Has a weak looking "stacking of potato boxes" in corner. Busted - you blantantly copied Five Guys! 6) Fries were served in a cup. Thanks for making them soggy by all couped up in condensation. That's $3.00 down the drain. 7) Our timber looking table felt sticky. Bad synthetic finish or something? 8) No combo deal or friendlier pricing like at Epic, Smash Burger, Five Guys, Steak & Shake, and M Burger. 9) Waste of time and breath on silly "green and humane burger" message. I'll give them an extra star because they only opened yesterday. The place looks very nice, like lots of the burger places popping up (Five Guys, Epic Burger, Meatheads, Everest Burger, etc). One side is ice cream and milkshakes, the other half is burgers. The menu is pretty small, like the other burger places. They've got a burger (1 or 2 patties), chicken sandwich, hot dog, fries, and drinks. It would be cool to have other patty options like turkey burger or veggie burger. More sides would be nice too (onion rings!). I ordered "That Burger" which is two patties and chose the pretzel bun (instead of regular bun). I got ketchup, mustard, pickles, and jalapenos. It took TWENTY MINUTES to get my order. Looking around, I saw ten people working behind the counter, but most of the tasks were being performed by like 2 or 3 people: the manager and assistant managers. They clearly opened too soon, not training the staff enough. There were also many more people waiting for their food than were actually eating their food. They asked for my name and I could hear them calling people's names when their orders were up. About 15 minutes into my wait, they decided to ditch the names and start calling order numbers. Oh hey, what's MY number?? Looked through my pockets, found my receipt, and found the number. I then thought I heard them call my number. I asked, "Freddie?" and she looked at me like I was speaking another language. Probably a good idea to stick to one method for calling out orders. OK, now to the food. That double burger on the pretzel bun is BIG. It was pretty greasy when I unwrapped it but I'll tell ya, it WAS pretty darn tasty. The patties are kind of similar to Steak and Shake, but thicker. The greasiness because an issue as everything started sliding around and falling apart. The jalapenos are raw slices, so they are pretty hot, but not awful. They had something listed on the menu called "petal sauce" as a topping, but didn't describe it anywhere (and I forgot to ask). I'm assuming it's like "Epic Sauce" or some other variation on that theme. That pretzel bun is yummy and has a really good "bite" to it, chewy and good. The fries were good, but definitely not hot. I think they would have been great if hot. The fries were pretty small, all like 1"-2" long, kind of weird. Maybe I got the end of a batch or something. They were pretty crispy and not terribly greasy. I would have liked iced tea instead of the soda or Oberweis milk options. They're still working stuff out, but I'm hopeful that the management will be reading these reviews and make some smart changes. It's right down the street from my studio, so I'll definitely give it another shot. The first time we went, it was their grand opening. The service was horrible and our orders were completely wrong. We gave them the benefit of the doubt since it was just day 1. We never felt the urge to go back til we received a mailer flyer with coupons for a $1 off That Burger and $1 off That Chicken. We decided to give them another shot. It was a weekend during lunch and it was pretty empty. We knew we were going to use the coupons so the only decisions we needed to make were the toppings. There was no line so we took the time to ask the gentleman taking our order what petal sauce was, if pretzel bread was extra and what the special seasonings (smoked or something else that slips my mind) tasted like. He looked all annoyed and barely even looked us in the eyes when answering. It felt like he was saying "just decide already" in his head. It took a while to prepare our order, so good thing oberweis was there so we kept ourselves busy planning dessert. The burger and the chicken were fairly large, but the taste for both was eh. The burger was juicy but the smoked seasoning they added was not evenly distributed. For some bites, the taste was too strong that it kept making me cough to clear it out of my throat or take a gulp of my drink to get it down. The chicken breast was a decent cut but the breading was light and soggy and it overall lacked flavor even with the toppings. We immediately went home and dug into the 4 quarts of oberweis ice cream we bought there to lift up our sprints from a disappointment. It was not worth the price tag for us. We gave it another shot, but the second time wasn't any better than the first even after a long time. read more
