That Burger Double with American Cheese

I love this place and have been coming here for over 8 years I believe when they first built it and have enjoyed it ever since. Every time I come here there's a lot of energy and a lot of fun as there are very young people working here which is great to see. It is connected and shared in the same building as the Oberweis dairy and ice cream shop which is very convenient. The food is made fresh the portions are very generous which I enjoy. During this pandemic it is great that I can still order food from here and pick up and enjoy it. Although this is fast food it is not greasy or oily. This is a great alternative to the mass production fast food chain restaurants.

While on the way home from the North Suburbs, I had a taste for a burger that was not of the McDonald's, Wendy's, or Burger King variety. Google pulled up That Burger Joint, so I tried it out. The burgers and fries aren't bad, from my one visit. The Oberweis that shares the building location makes the shakes, malts, and ice cream desserts, which means you're getting something good from them. That's where it ends. That Burger Joint and the Oberweis seem staffed by tweens who would rather be elsewhere. It's an appalling suburban and privileged kid attitude that I've noticed. I can't stress this enough: customer service is everything. As enjoyable as the food and ice cream were, I'll wait until I get back to Chicago proper next time I'm hankering for a burger.

Very tasty food. Happened to be the only customer there for a few minutes thus my food was freshly and quickly prepared. Very filling, large portions. Great customization options. Nice music and adjacent to an Oberweis as well which is unique. The interior blends well while remaining contrasted. Chipotle Jack burger is really tasty. Really satisfied with my food and the people are nice too

Combine with Oberwise, their shakes are truly rich and delicious. Burgers are good as well. This place is a convenient option. I would not consider this place as something to go out of your way to visit. The price here is too high without offering anything truly worth its value. You might pay a high price but a meal here is still delicious.

This is a classier burger joint that recently opened in Skokie. It's right across from McDonalds but they're both very different from each other. This place is reminiscent of Five Guys, Portillo's, and Epic Burger at Old Orchard/Westfield mall... Where they cook your burgers to order. It's nice to customize your own burger and there's def no complaining on this end of its increasing popularity! Anyways, "that junior burger" is the perfect sized burger for me. For bigger appetites "that burger" has two beef patties. A large order of fries comes in a medium-sized cup, enough to share between two people. I got the "petal sauce" on the side to dip the fries, which is similar to the creamy paprika sauce that usually comes with fried onion blooms. Most toppings are free except for cheese (50 cents) and bacon ($1), and you have the choice of a regular or pretzel bun. My favorite topping was fresh jalapenos on my burger. It was spicyyyy. (I wish they offered fried eggs as a burger topping though!) It's also a plus that oberweiss is right next door. They share different sides of the same building... So getting dessert (if you have room) is very, very easy. I think the current average of 2 stars for this place is a little low- they've just opened. I'm sure their service and the flow of orders will improve with time.

The food is great at That Burger Joint. However, ordering ice cream on the That Burger Joint side of the restaurant is painful. Today, my wife wanted a Black Cherry Milkshake, no problem it went through just fine. My son wanted a Black Raspberry Chocolate Chunk shake, problem. The That Burger Joint personnel INSISTED that Black Raspberry Chocolate Chunk Ice Cream was seasonal and they didn't currently have it. Amazingly it is on the menu, see photo, however, the person taking our order again insisted they didn't have it... I even had to ask the Oberweis cashier if they had it. They said yes, of course we have it. So finally, I had to order the second milkshake for Black Raspberry Chocolate Chunk Ice Cream on the Oberweis side of the Joint. Uggh....

Since then, I have off-and-on ordered from nearby restaurants yet with an interest in revisiting Dear Franks at some point. It was not until I recently discovered its veggie and plant-based items on the menu when I made it a high priority to visit, being that I am now a vegetarian. After attending training at my job which sits no more than a mile from Dear Franks, I made my visit. Its location sits along W Touhy Ave amongst a mixture of restaurants and shopping stores that are relevant to the community of Niles. I was acknowledged shortly after I walked in and up to the counter to look at the menu which was plastered above the counter. It took me some time to look at the menu because the menu online differed from the menu onsite above the counter. I had a taste for a veggie hot dog, but I did not see it featured on the menu above the counter, figuring that it was no longer an option at the time. So, I ended up ordering their veggie burger, fries, and a drink which was completed within several minutes. While paying, I could not help but notice Turano products near the register. Turano baking company, a family-owned bakery that produces authentic and delicious breads. I drive by Turano's daily enroute to my primary job and it is hard not to notice its building exterior, which has a commanding presence. Being that I have had the interest in visiting Turano's for some time now, I ended up purchasing a Turano - chocolate chunk cookie to go along with my veggie burger, fries, and drink. Maybe now after purchasing the chocolate chunk cookie, it will urge me to visit its location in Berwyn. I chose to dine-in at Dear Franks since I had plenty of time in my day, plus I figured that I still had time to beat the traffic on Edens Expressway enroute back to Chicago. The inside of Dear Franks appeared clean, and the atmosphere gave off a sporty vibe with pictures of Chicago sports teams, and iconic sporting moments in history of those teams featured. And there are a number of tables with seats available inside of the dining area, plus a television plastered on the wall near the entrance for viewing pleasure as you eat. The crinkle-cut fries were the first item I started off with eating. Though not as good as Portillo's crinkle-cut fries, ketchup certainly complimented them well. From that point on, I could not resist eating them all after the addition of ketchup. I moaned in enjoyment after my first bite of the veggie burger; it was garnished with everything I requested such as ketchup, mustard, lettuce, and tomatoes! It was very satisfying indeed. Taking note of everything I experienced: service, ambiance, and food, I have to say that it was a good experience. And with that I would gladly re-visit Dear Franks of Niles again whenever in the Niles area. Service: 4 | Ambiance: 4 | Food: 5 ~Nourish your soul. ~ Thomas G

I am satisfied with their response and improve my rating from 1 to 4 stars This isn't a negative review of the food which was the standard chain quality (good but don't splurge on it much for health reasons). I was in the area for a play and picked up a local friend. I went here because an acquaintance (who since died) gave me multiple gift cards to Portillos which I needed to use. I had 4 cards, not sure how much was left on them. We got $27 worth of food and I started handing the cashier the cards. She told me to scan them on the read light reader. Only one had a scannable bar code. She was not sure how to read the others. My friend suggested she swipe it on keyboard, she didn't seem to know this already. Card 1 red light scanned ok. Card 2 swiped ok. Card 3 she swiped and it didn't register, unclear if it worked. Card 4 brought the total to 0$. She wasn't going to give the last 2 cards back and asked for the other two. My tried to clarify that card 4 might have value left, she confidently said no. I was suspicious since the total couldn't have exactly matched my bill. The next day I looked at the receipt and it clearly said there was money left on the card, over 8$. It's unclear whether card 3 had money or she just didn't scan it. I'm presuming this was poor training but it has an element of malicious intent since she was so confident I had nothing left on the card and requested keeping all the cards. If you have gift cards beware going here unless staff are trained. Receipt attached for proof. If the business is reading this, can I cat my money back? Card 3 was for $10 value but not clear if it was touched or not.

The menus are expansive and you order at the counter when you walk in. There are plenty of tables for dining in, and a few were taken while we were there. There was a steady stream of phone orders coming in for pick up, and the restaurant was busy overall. We were helped right away and the staff at the counter were so friendly. I ordered a Maxwell street sausage as a meal ($5 additional for a drink and fries) and my partner ordered the American Gyro sandwich and also as a meal. We grabbed a table and our drinks from the fountain machine and only waited a few minutes for the number on our receipt to be called with our order. The food here is so fresh and delicious. This is one of the best Maxwell street sausages I've had around, the bread was perfect and soft inside and crispy on the outside with the sausage split and grilled and perfectly sweet caramelized onions. The fries looked like they came in frozen/pre-cut but were fried up perfect and a generous portion. The Gyro came stacked with meat, it wasn't dry, and had great flavor. Because the food was so delicious I decided to grab a piece of baklava to go, which I was assured was homemade and delicious - and they were right. So sweet, fresh, textured, rich, luxurious. Don't skip the baklava when you stop by! This is definitely a spot that will be added to our regular rotation of lunch/dinner spots around town.
