Came here with my friends in Baltimore as this was their go-to neighborhood Thai restaurant. Not going to lie, the walk was rather sketchy and anxiety inducing as you traipse from the safety of Hopkins to the "ghetto", but Thai Restaurant is fortunately very close. Outside appearance is nothing special and indoor decor is mediocre at best (keep an eye out for sketches of deities and their nipples), but the food was a treat. An older man (presumably the owner of the restaurant) very kindly told us the specials for the night, though we stuck with our typical Thai favorites. I ordered the Tom Yum Gai and requested it to be "Bangkok spicy", which it most definitely was. Unsure whether the shrimp and chicken versions are intentionally cooked differently or if it was inconsistency, but my friends soup was more lemon grassy while mine was mostly all tomato tasting. I split a chicken red curry dish, "just outside of bangkok spicy", with my friend and it was delicious - could definitely taste the coconut and a perfect amount of spice. Thai iced tea also a great compliment to the spicy dishes. Given the location and price range, would say its a hidden gem in Baltimore. read more

This is the type of place I want to support in the Waverly/ Charles Village neighborhood. It is consistently delicious and the owner is a very friendly, helpful guy. The food is made with all traditional ingredients, so as someone who is dairy-free, I appreciate that they don't use milk. I appreciate that this restaurant gives you options when it comes to how spicy you want it. The decor was traditional, the fried cheesecake topped off as a great dessert choice. The inauspiciously named Thai Restaurant on Greenmount at 33rd isn't in the best of neighborhoods, but does have secret parking in the back if you don't want to park on the street. It looks like a hole in the wall that's going to have passable Pad Thai and not much else, but this is one of the better, friendlier, and cleaner Thai places that we've found. I've been frequenting it since 2001, and while I used to eat in weekly with friends while in school, it's become more of a takeout favorite as of late. Their massaman curry is one of the best I've had, anywhere, plus it's practically the definition of consistent. They have one of the better Pad Thai dishes in the city - less oily and more flavorful than Ban Thai, better acidity and complexity than Thai One On. Their spring rolls are fresh, the Thai iced tea is proper and indulgent, and they have an extensive set of vegetarian options. It may not look like much from the outside, but it's definitely worth a try! read more

This restaurant has been in this location for the past 30 years. You may not even notice this place, since it is stuck in between a bunch of retail shops and the exterior isn't much to catch your attention. A friend had mentioned that it has the best Thai food in Baltimore. I think it lives up to the accolades. I ordered carryout so I was able to pick up some Massaman Shrimp Curry, Panang Beef Curry, Stir fried vegetables with basil, and Pad Thai with Tofu. At first, I kinda did a 2nd look at the prices as each dish was on average $17. It was worth it. Everything was cooked perfectly and it was delicious. Dishes that had a more delicate flavor profile were done perfectly. Dishes that had more heat, had the right amount of heat. Vegetables were cooked but not overcooked. The pad thai was the best I had tasted in a long time. Perfectly balanced with sweet, spicy, salty and sour. Pad thai is a basic and a staple...it's my barometer for a Thai restaurant. If you can't do a basic, I wonder how well you will do with the other dishes. Overall, great food and quick carryout service. It is worth a trip here. read more

When I used to visit Thai Restaurant when I lived in Baltimore, I thought that the dishes were rather pricey for Thai food (upwards of $20-25 a person after T/T). However, having moved away from Baltimore and trying Thai places in San Francisco and Los Angeles, my girlfriend and I both agree that Thai Restaurant remains by far the best Thai food I've had on both coasts (and that includes places in DC/NY/Philly/etc). My favorite dish there, the Pad Thai, is better than the Pad Thai I've had in Thailand. The noodles are firm, never soggy, and the flavor is always well balanced. The shrimp (a must) is extremely fresh, large, and generous. Even without asking for it to be spicy, they make their Pad Thai naturally a bit spicy. I usually ask for "1-2 stars" on their spiciness scale; I personally usually handle a good bit of spicy, but 2 stars at Thai Restaurant is the absolute limit for me. So I recommend that you be wary on how spicy you ask for something (good luck with 3 stars). Their curries are all fantastic -- over the course of several years and several visits, our favorite curry has grown to be the masaman curry. The fact that you can choose the type of meat in your curry is quite nice, since not many places allow you to customize like that. We generally get either chicken or beef for the curry. Again, their curries are by default a bit spicy, so beware of that too. I've had their Drunken Noodles dish once (which was highly recommended by others), but it was somewhat bland and soggy for me. Your luck may be different. I've tried a few of their other house specialties as well, but time and time again, their curries and noodle/rice dishes are our favorites. Their desserts are great (especially the fried banana with honey), as well as their drinks (their Thai Iced Tea is flavorful, without being overly sweet). I recommend going there at lunch, as although the portions are smaller, the prices are a LOT cheaper (approx $7 will get you a nice lunch). I really can't say enough good things about the place, although its location leaves a bit to be desired. Also, their rice portions are generally _very_ small. Even if your dish comes with rice, you may need to order an extra serving for yourself (which costs extra). The place also gets pretty packed during weekends, so plan ahead with a reservation if you can (especially if you have a large group). Also, service can get quite slow during peak times too. I recommend going during a weekday evening if possible, for the best service and food quality. Parking is a bit tricky since there's rarely parking on the street, but there is a lot in the back (which can be hard to find). read more

On any typical weekday, you can probably find me at Thai Restaurant. Not only is it close to the Hopkins campus, but the prices are fair and the food is outstanding. There are a very good amount of vegetarian and vegan options - almost every meal gives you a choice of animal proteins, tofu, or vegetables so a vegetarian can have all but a handful of the meals. I think what I like most about this restaurant is the overall ambiance. It is beautifully decorated and subtly lit, and the same few waiters are always there (one of them has been there since 1986!). They easily recognize you and get to know you, so in no time you feel like a regular. The service is fast, dependable, and most of all friendly. The food is always fresh, and they are more than happy to make any changes and substitutions you want (something I've had trouble finding around here). I would recommend trying their hot tea, the singha beer, and the tom yum hed soup. This place really deserves all five stars! One of my absolute favorites in Baltimore. read more

I think this place deserves a 2.5, but I'd rather round down than up. I went to this place b/c it was close to where I was and I have never had thai food in baltimore before. Now, heres a caveat - I have had some incredible thai food in my day, and so this review might be a little biased - it's probably worth of a weak 3, rather than a 2, but I digress. So first impressions: This place is kinda ghetto, but that is not necessarily a turn off for me since some of the best food I've had, has been in ghetto hole in the wall joints...that being said, this was not one of them. I was impressed to see that this restaurant has won numerous Zagat awards and had been featured in the newspaper starting from 1975, but that doesn't really mean much when the last award was in 2014 and its 2016...but once again, I digress. The server who greeted us was an old man who seemed friendly enough, but when I asked him which one he would recommend between the 'pad thai' and the 'drunken noodles' he responded by saying "whichever one you like better"...at first I was taken aback by his response, then I was slightly impressed by his 'I don't have time for your stupid questions' attitude...and so I decided to go with the drunken noodles based on some of the previous yelp reviews. The food: Mediocre. Flavors were okay, but portions were small, and the chicken seemed underseasoned - it was a pretty spicy dish, and unfortunately the spice was overwhelming and so it was hard to appreciate any of the actual taste. For the price of $14.95 it wasn't worth it. At the end the other server who was walking around in shorts and a t-shirt, and whom I can only assume was one of the owners, basically threw the cheque down on our table and didn't say anything. Perhaps he was upset that I asked too many questions, or perhaps he was upset that he had to work. I'll never know. Verdict: You can skip this place and opt for something else in my opinion. read more

Very good food, and extremely nice service. I arrived 30 minutes before my friend, and they let me sit at a table and drink water after being in the hot hot heat for the past hour. I ordered the Pad See Ew--freaking delicious. I liked the carrots, which I had never had in Pad See Ew. The broccoli was well cooked, and the noodles and chicken were excellent. The dish is a little on the expensive side, but you will be STUFFED afterwards, so it might just be worth it for leftovers. The soup and main course were authentic Thai-American, and since I do not know any better, I can say I enjoyed the lunch items and believe them to be what they are supposed to be. If this is Baltimore's best Thai, it's time to move. We ate here based on our friend's recommendation and the Yelp reviews but what a disappointment. The prices are high and the portions are small. The Tom Yom Hed soup was good but the fresh spring rolls were awful, delivered swimming in sweet-tart goo. The scallop stir fry was tasteless and my daughter complained that the pad thai tasted like crunchy peanut butter. The tofu curry was below average and the "special" chicken and shrimp dumplings were just nasty lumps of ground stuff in soggy dough. If it is good Thai you are searching for then you had best look elsewhere. read more

Big ups to this place. They've got Best of Baltimore awards from various categories on the walls going back to the mid-80s, so you gotta know it's been consistently excellent. I went for the first time recently and wasn't expecting much because I'm not always huge on Thai food, but I thought it was great! The portions are a good size, everyone is really friendly, and the flavors are excellent. I got the drunken noodles and they hit every possible spot, and the red curry was good too. I also loved the ambiance because it was very "Baltimore/pan-Asian sit-down restaurant". We were lucky enough while sitting there to witness a really awkward exchange between some drunken propositioning hideous-feathertopped-bag-toting women who'd just seen the Sex and the City movie and some dudes who couldn't wait to get away from them. I went to JHU for a coworker training there. I felt very hungry after that. This restaurant saved me. After reading most of reviews in Yelp, I absolutely ordered the drunken noodles for my dinner. Because I love the spicy food, so I chose level 3 (very spicy). But one of my friend chose level 5! But it was a real Thai food! Quaint little Thai restaurant that has been around since the 80s. It's old vintage and quirky decor makes the eating experience. The best part is the owner who is this old asian man, who you can tell is the kindest soul. The inviting vibe of the place keeps me coming back. The quality of food is superb. I have been to this old fashioned cozy spot many times and it never disappoints. One can have a peaceful conversation here without noisy techno decor jamming in people and furniture. On this particular night they saved my health with a clear broth soup with chicken/shrimp dumplings and lots of lethal pepper bits floating around. End of congestion and cold. Curry orders with chicken were decent if lacking complexity. Green curry, maybe a bit bland and my panang heartier. There could have been more vegetables but the chicken was ample if a bit tough. (I'm spoiled by organic chicken.) Ginger tea was amazing if a bit too sweet, but gingery and steaming. A shared dish of rambutan (canned, like lychee) topped off a solid good meal. I've been on a mission with my boyfriend and our good friend to try all of the thai places in Baltimore to find my favorite. This is by far our favorite of all. I still haven't been to Ban Thai, but I won't be going anywhere else again! (Okay, except maybe Spice & Dice up in Towson. But still not as good!) I've tried and it's been disappointing. Had the Drunken Noodles, which were SPICY! So freaking good. I can't tell you how consistently disappointed I am with all of the other restaurants after finding this gem of a place. We also had Pad Thai and Panang. Yum! The only thing bad about this place is that I feared for our lives. Ha. No, seriously. Fortunately there were three cop cars that sat on the block for the entirety of our meal. We were able to park out front and make sure our car was visible to being stolen. This little restaurant on Greenmount is not much to look at from the outside, but it deserves 5 stars from me.I seriously get angry whenever anyone says anything negative about this place. I will admit that there are probably like 2 or 3 things that you shouldn't get there (maybe dumplings, or one time there were these spring rolls that were drowned in too much sauce). These are the things you should stick to : tom yum soup, any of the noodle dishes (my favorite is gwaytio pad khua and the drunken noodles), thai iced tea, the chili dishes, and the curry dishes. I promise that I have been to numerous Thai restaurants and NONE of them were as good as this place.
