My friend and I went here last night for dinner (Sunday night). While it was crowded, there were definitely tables available. Upon entering the restaurant we were ignored for a few minutes then finally shown to this tiny little table between the bathroom and the kitchen. Normally I request to change away from a table like that (I mean honestly, who enjoys being constantly knocked into by the servers carrying food and then the people going to the bathroom? Plus sitting in front of a bathroom is kind of gross...), but after the icy greeting we got from the people working there and the feeling that it would be more of a fight to change seats then I was willing to deal with at the moment (since the other tables were for four people and we were only two) we decided to just stay put.
After settling in (with servers pushing by and a person trying to fill our water glasses as we were still trying to sit down) we finally looked at the menu. At first I was very confused, Yelpers please note that the menu posted here is not the actual menu that they have at the restaurant! I have told Yelp about it, but please be aware of it. Anyway, this was definitely a bit of a disappointment for me as I am vegan and was really looking forward to trying one of their many vegetarian dishes listed on the menu here on Yelp.
Now I welcome other people to prove me wrong, but after having lived in LA and San Francisco, my expectations for NJ Thai food is not very high. This place only proved my low expectations. To start my friend and I split the "egg roll" appetizer which is actually 3 fried spring rolls (why they call them egg rolls is beyond me, I had to clarify with the woman that there was actually no egg in them because I am vegan). They were typical of any fried spring roll that I have had recently, greasy and not full of very much. They were hot though, so points for that. Then I decided to go with a relatively safe option and get the Pad Thai (which normally has no fish sauce, oyster sauce, etc) and my friend got the Lard Nar. My Pad Thai was rather disappointing. While I am happy to report that there was no chicken in mine (like another reviewer mentioned here), the flavors were really disappointing. It was incredibly sweet, dry, and not very flavorful. Really the only thing that saved it was the little lemon wedge that they served with it and the spicy pepper that they put in there. Otherwise it would have been very bland and dry. My friend enjoyed her dish though, but I was unable to try it because of the chicken. It did look slightly more appetizing and definitely had a ton of sauce.
When we finally received our bill my friend and I were shocked to see that we could no read the total due! The person who had written the bill up had written the numbers so fast that we could not discern if we owed .00 or .50 or something else. We decided to just give in some money and get the change back. Turns out it must have been a .05 because we received .95 back in addition to our dollar amount. I have never been in a situation like that before, it was really odd.
Overall our experience in this restaurant wasn't terrible, but I wouldn't go running back there tomorrow. I guess my quest for decent Thai food in NJ continues... read more
