Thai Flavors is another restaurant that I typically order through third-party delivery apps, but it's also one of my favorite Thai restaurants in the Midwest. Thai curry is the ultimate comfort food in my opinion, and the curry dish options they have at Thai Flavors is perfect for pretty much any mood I'm in. They're also open to modifying their dishes to be gluten-free, which is great for someone like me. This place is in a weird spot in a crapstrip that houses TWO other Asian restaurants. The decor inside is unexpected compared to the exterior, in a good way. Servers are younger, friendly, and sound like they're having a good time at work on account of all the laughing you can hear in the background. I like that! Food is really good. Tempura veggies are a safe choice here. Although not quite real tempura (the batter here is thicker, heavier and extra greasy), it's super yum if you just want some really good deep fried stuff. I had very limited time to snag some food as I ran across town to a class. I did my searching before hand and was recommended to give it a try. My friend said they would be fairly quick and I could go on my way. I walked in and they quickly addressed me and I asked to order carry out. No problem, they handed me a menu and I ordered the Thai Pan which looks to be the popular choice. They had it up for me in about 5 min or so. It was super quick! I was on my way. Came with my family of 5. Ordered spring rolls with no cucumber and shrimp. Server came out to tell us that she forgot to put it in as no cucumber and shrimp and they already rolled it. Server continued to bring out 3 dishes. While we wait for the other 2 to come out, we bring it to her attention and she lets us know she forgot the other dish (1). So we get the 4/5 dish and are waiting for the other to come out. Ask her for a second time about the dish and she says she forgot to put in the last one. We come here as a family of 5 you would expect her to bring out 5 meals. Instead she brings out 3 and forgets to even place the order for the rest. Worst service I've ever experienced. One of my absolute favorite, repeat, go-to joints in Des Moines, for sit-down, take-out, and delivery. Nothing on the menu has ever come to disappoint me, but I continue to find myself ordering Red Curry with Tofu, normally at a 5 or 6 spice. I also HIGHLY suggest their Veggie Dumplings. And they offer plenty of vegetarian and vegan options past these. This place looks like a hole in the wall, or rather, a hole in an East Side strip mall, but I promise you that the inside is a very comfortable and aesthetically pleasing environment. One of the first places I've been to in Des Moines and I have seen this place grow and upgrade into the great restaurant it is today. Their staff is always friendly and seen happy to be working there. The ambiance is very soothing here, lights dim and very elegant table setting. It is a great place for a casual date or a family outing with kids. They have a great Asian beer selection as well as other beers. I haven't been here for several years. First time I was not too impressed. I figured I would give it another try. I came here during 11:45 AM on. Wednesday. The place was packed in the back room and front area. We were seated right away in the front area. What we ordered: Pad Thai lunch - very large portion size. This serving size was similar to a dinner size at other Thai restaurants. Overall tasted good. Eggplant in Thai Flavors special sauce lunch size and tum yum and crab Rangoon - seeing other Yelp pictures of this dish made me want to order it. Eggplant pieces were so large it was hard to eat. Taste was a sweet and salty in brown sauce. Tofu was fried crispy and delicious. Ample amounts of vegetables such as corn, bamboo, mushroom. On the fence if I would order again. CA roll with crispies - surprisingly good. Basic Cali roll with crab and avocado with crispies on outside. Spicy crab stick roll - very simple roll with spicy imitation crab meat. Overall service was decent. They had more than 4 servers and delivery people working. Drinks were refilled when needed. Getting take out boxes and check took the longest time. Pretty solid Thai food. As most state, it's in the corner of an old strip mall next to a spay shelter. Interesting. Inside a little older but the servers are happy, friendly, and it definitely makes up 98% of any other deficiencies. The food itself is pretty tasty. Had the Pad- See-We , Iowa hot. Though spice is subjective I thought it was pretty mild, maybe a 3 of 5 elsewhere. Everything was prepared nicely and reasonable price and healthy portions. Me and my girlfriend have been here twice. I didn't know they were there until she suggested it. I got the pad thai (beef) ,crab Ragoon (hot ,crisp ,and a slightly flour taste) , and she got a coconut curry. It was good but my noodles were slightly undercooked . (The first time we went they were much better) not terrible but noticeable. She said she enjoyed the curry but that something was off about the chicken. Thai Flavors is a nice place with solid Thai fare. I have gotten both take out/delivery and have eaten at the actual restaurant. If ordering delivery, make sure to order with plenty of time in advance, because they do take their time. Honestly, I think that in all restaurants that are trying to do too much at once, the really good food may get a bit lost and I think this sometimes happens at Thai Flavors. Don't go for other than the classic Thai dishes, as these are the ones that are done well. I love, love, love their Tom Kha Kai and their Tom Yum soups. They are fresh, flavorful and if you get the 3 stars spice, you'll get food with a nice kick but without regretting it later. The curries (yellow especially) are also solid, and the pad Thai is good but didn't really blow me away. Other good choices are the drunken noodles and the pad see ew. There is an excessive seafood dish whose name I cannot recall, but it was poorly made, looked halfway raw and unappetizing. It was a large plate with tons of seafood (lots of mussels). The friend who ordered it couldn't get through it. Steer clear from that. All in all, Thai Flavors is reliably solid Thai food classics. Talk about competition! This place is in the same parking lot at Cafe Fuzion (read my 5 star review!) and I am really challenged to decide which is better. We were seated quickly and everyone was welcoming. Our waitress Anne was so pleasant and competent - anticipating needs, answering all questions and offering all relevant information. We ordered thai teas which were delicious though perhaps on the sweeter side. I love their "$3 lunch add-on special" which allows you to add any combination of the following to your dish: spring roll, crab-rangoon, veggies or tom yum. Between the two of us we had all but the veggies and were very pleased with each item! We ordered a Chef Special Roll which was excellent and pretty... their sushi menu is easy to read and the prices are average if not a little cheaper than typical. Our entrees were drunken noodles and green curry... we had to box most of both to go since we were already full by this time but we tried both first and they were both excellent. I'd say the green curry is above average compared to other green curries. Also the spoons they have are fabulous for eating curries (broad and shallow). They have neat little fortune cookies. Everything seemed clean. Tables are a little closer than I'd prefer but not too squished. So which is better? You'll have to decide for yourself! read more

Wow, this is seriously my favorite restaurant in Des Moines. I've been there 2 times and have been super pleased each time. Their classic Pad Thai is nearly unbeatable. (#2 spiciness was perfect for me) It came out so quick yet the flavors were so deep and developed. No other Pad Thai compares! The second time I visited, I tried the avocado curry and was absolutely blown away. I mainly tried it because of how intrigued I was by the title, but all the flavors worked so well together. Honestly, one of the best things I've ever eaten. Can't wait for what's next! In regards to the atmosphere, it's such a pleasant surprise. From the front, it looks like a hole-in-the-wall type joint, but the interior is extremely nice with white tablecloths and comfortable seating. The service is quick and the waitress that I've had both times was so friendly. Plus, the prices are low for the amount of food you get at such a high quality standard. I fell in love with Thai cuisine at two amazing restaurants in when living in Ohio. In my 2 years in Iowa and during frequent business travel to other states I've been disappointed with what passes for Thai, even among restaurants with strong Yelp ratings. Finally, at Thai Flavors, I found the food I love again. I don't get to Des Moines often, but when I do this will be one of my top choices of eateries. I had the Thai Red Curry with chicken, which is my dish of choice for evaluating my first meal at a Thai restaurant. I ordered it with the 3rd of 5 heat levels, which they call "hot" (after which come 4-Thai Hot," and "5-Iowan Hot." Although I can handle greater heat, number 3 was just right for me to feel the heat and still taste the amazing coconut-based curry with fresh basil. The flavors were perfectly balanced and layered - meaning that I could taste each flavor in the dish as well as the blend. That rare trait is what made my Thai Flavors experience awesome. UPDATE: On my 2nd visit I just had to have the red curry with chicken again. Consistently incredible. This time I also added an order of Tom Kha Kai soup (sometimes spelled tom kha gai). This is a Thai hot and sour soup with coconut and chicken. Scrumptious. I am going to learn to cook that myself. These are in my photo. For dessert I had Coconut Milk Custard (which has a thin layer of banana mash below the custard). It was good. I may try a different dessert next time. A diner at the next table over recommended mango with coconut sticky rice. That will be my next Thai dessert. read more

My most favorite cuisine is Thai without any doubt. Thai Flavors is one of my very favorite Thai restaurants in the USA! A bold statement for sure, however, it is true!!! The staff are friendly and very nice, not obtrusive with the right amount of assistance throughout the meal. All the dishes I have had have been superb, so much so that a number of my guests have been converted to Thai food. The soups, Tom Yum and Tom Kha are superb; the rice and noodle dishes are excellent as well. In fact none and I do mean NONE of the dishes served have been average, everything has been excellent! We ate here today and both of us were disappointed. I got something called goy-see-mee, spice level 1. It consisted of a bland chicken broth with what looked like ramen noodles. There were carrots, bamboo shoots and pea pods. I got pork for the meat. It was all pretty tasteless. Went here on a Saturday and picked lunch special menu items and the rest of the menu. Lunch special runs 12-3pm, Monday to Saturday. Had the following: 1. shrimp in a blanket - I would rate it 2/5. It costs $7 for 4 pieces. Size wise, it is the width of a boba straw about 6 inches in length. Taste wise, it was just okay. I have had great shrimp in a blanket so this fails in comparison -not even close. I would rate this dish 2/5 based on mainly taste. It still tastes like shrimp and the dipping sauce lacked some kick to it. The dipping sauce tasted like plum sauce. 2. Panang curry with chicken - lunch menu so it costs $2 less than usual. I would rate this 5/5. Taste wise the different than a red curry although it looks like it. Panang is creamier and richer in taste as it has more coconut oil. I got the mild spice and it was just perfect. I feel like i could have kicked it up a notch to a 3 as the coconut milk helped calmed the spice down. I think if given the choice, I would get panang over red curry. 3. Kua Kai - its taste is similar to pad see ew. Sweet, savory, hint of garlic and soy sauce... Just highly highly recommended. I'm thinking of coming back there as I am typing this review. I don't know if it was the fault of a 3rd party delivery service Grub Hub or the restaurant, but when the driver delivered our food to our hotel room they left the food on the floor outside the door did not knock on the door, nor did I receive a text or call that the food had been delivered. After waiting 15 minutes after the delivery window had passed, I called Grub Hub support and they said that their record showed that the order had been delivered 45 minutes prior to my call. I decided to leave the hotel room to check if the food was possibly left at the front desk, and when I opened the door there was the food sitting on the floor outside the hotel room door. The Grub Hub app never showed the order as delivered neither did I receive any updates from the Grub Hub system via text, phone or email. Also, when I placed my order online I did indicate that I needed eating utensils and there were no eating utensils provided. I had to go down to the front desk of the hotel to obtain forks. Every food delivery driver should know that it is standard service to provide eating utensils when delivering food to a hotel. The food itself was mediocre. read more
