Veggie Eggrolls- VEGAN! (2count for $4)
    Christina W.

Came back for my birthday dinner! Had the Kao Poon with tofu. I was impressed! Menu stated that it was vegan based broth with spices and coconut milk. This soup had great depth and flavor. Also order some of the lotus cookies. Also! Vegan! Ordering was easy at front desk and received my order within 15 minutes. Enjoyed a great dinner with a good friend of mine. She ordered chicken laap. She loved it as well and said it was tasty. Every time I visit Lucky Lotus, it has been consistently delicious. They have never failed on the delicious factor. Service was excellent. My friend and I were the last ones in the shop and they were very gracious and kind that we were the last ones. We left before closing time. I would highly recommend Lucky Lotus to anyone looking for authentic Lao food in this area.

Heat will keep you warm on a cold day. Heat will warm you from the inside. Pick your heat when you pick your meal. The most adorable interior of this restaurant. You have some menu highlights when you walk in and order at the register. Seasonal options and menu staples both available. The gentleman at the register was very helpful. With the order put in we snagged a seat. The smaller plates came out quickly. The rest came out to our table of three quicker than expected. The three of us really enjoyed our meals. I had the Crispy Rice wrap and a low spice Pad Tai. My friends devoured their After school rice and spring rolls.

Loved the ambience, music, and number of vegan/vegetarian options at this place. Service was pretty quick and friendly. My only complaint is the spiciness. They ask you spice level 1-5 and I said one, but it was still a bit too hot for me to really enjoy. I wonder if zero is an option? Hope to come back and try again someday.

So good!! Tons of vegan options plus plenty of other choices, so there's really something for everyone. The aesthetic is super cute, and while it's usually pretty busy, the food still comes out fast and always tastes amazing. My go-to favorites are the veggie egg rolls, the khao poon with tofu, and the vegan pad Thai with tofu. They even have seitan, which I can't wait to try next time! Hands down the best Asian cuisine in the area. Do be mindful when choosing your spice levels a 2 seems like a 3 to me, and my family agreed. My only wish is that they had more locations and offered delivery or were on DoorDash. Definitely recommend!

    Tom yum with tofu

I got the tom yum with tofu which is apparently a winter special (I thought I saw it on their normal menu before though?). The broth was very flavorful to me, though bordering on a little too salty. There is no spice option but I appreciated it came moderately spicy. I wish there were more veggies and tofu and less broth. I felt like the balance was off. Service was friendly and patient.

When I came here for the first time, I went to another dimension. I'm glad I live in the same time of history as the 5 Spice Special Bing Bing Wrap. The atmosphere takes you to Southeast Asia Aside from waiting a little longer for fresh food. Great service and experience. Easily earns my favorite restaurant in Des Moines.

The ambiance when you walk in is enjoyable, the lighting and the music are perfect. There is a light up menu with pictures when you first walk in. You order at the counter, there is only milk, an old fashion soda, or other types of drinks. Now for the food the crab Rangoons are delicious, along with the crispy lettuce wraps, but spicy. I wish I could say the food was enjoyable but to be honest my lips were on fire! I'm pretty sensitive to spice so not my place, but may be yours. I ordered the zen noodle salad but again there was spicy stuff in it so I couldn't really enjoy it. The sauce that was served with it was also kinda spicy. The one thing I really enjoyed trying was the lemonade- it has a unique fruit I believe called Keule, so delicious! Bf ordered the pad Thai w chicken and he said it was very bland. I mean he had his plate swimming in sriracha but it didn't do anything for the dish. Be sure to mention whether you like spice or not before ordering as they are supposed to give you options but they didn't with us.

    Drunken noodles with chicken

I came in for lunch and ordered the drunken noodles with chicken. The flavor was amazing, and the staff was very friendly. The restaurant was clean, and you could tell by the way the tables were cleared that cleanliness is important to them. It's a good thing I live across town- otherwise I'd forego maintaining a caloric or financial budget and be ther all the time!

Stopped by this incredible Southeast Asian eatery in Des Moines, IA on a road trip and it was literally and figuratively. What a gem! They had Western-friendly names for some menu items, but the dishes themselves were about as authentic as you can get. For those that are sensitive to heat/spicy, I'd suggest just going with a 1 (on that scale of 1-5) because even a 2 is plenty of heat, and I have a high tolerance for spicy. They don't mess around! Zen Noodle Salad is a Vietnamese vermicelli bowl with fish sauce, and it's served warm. I'm accustomed to the noodles being room temp, but other than that, everything else in this dish was spot on including the egg rolls. Sky's the Limit was a nice stir-fried noodle dish and the shrimp exuded lots of flavor along with the rice noodles. I love dishes like this, but just be careful about getting the spicy level down to something you can enjoy! This place was a real treat for my friends and me. Des Moines is lucky to have it.

Pretty solid! Fun ambiance right down in a little business district which is kinda nice to walk around before or after. Staff was friendly and good was good. I got the chicken pad Thai and while it wasn't anything super standout it was fresh and I enjoyed it! Spice levels were good too, they can pack a punch!

I visited lucky lotus during a weekday lunch, but you would have thought it was the weekend- it was packed! I enjoyed the decorations throughout the store. Food is ordered at the front counter where they will give you a number to take to your table. Entrees took about 20 minutes to arrive. I enjoyed the soy sauce street noodles, which was their take on pad see ew. This is the best Thai food I've had in Des Moines.

Like it wasn't fully cleaned. Even the hostess hesitated a little when she sat us down. They had a huge party in the middle so I don't know if that was the reason they could have been behind (thinking like a waitress because I've been there). We ordered right away because we had seen the menu prior so we already knew what we wanted. Started off with the cream cheese Rangoon's and they were tasty. The beef ribs pho was spectacular! That is what my husband had. I enjoyed the beef bulgogi which was just as delicious. Really enjoyed their kimchi too it had great flavor. We couldn't not come to Zavy's without getting one of their yummy matcha. I got the mango sticky rice matcha and my husband got the strawberry one so we could try a different one. We both agreed the mango sticky rice matcha was still our favorite. It's just so good! Service was a little slow because of that party I'm assuming but the hostess' could have helped a little too. My husband had to go up to the front so we could get the check. Still recommend for anyone to try and will be back to have that yummy pho!

Biggest disappointment was that while alcohol options showed on the menu, they were unable to serve any alcohol - claiming that their liquor license had not yet been renewed. I was craving a spring roll with peanut sauce, so to start things off, we ordered #90 Bo Bia steamed spring rolls with shredded shrimp, carrots and sausage served with plum sauce (see picture). While the wrap was thicker than the 'paper' wraps that I'm used to, they were very good - and I really liked the plum sauce. My wife was undecided and our very helpful waiter Archie, suggested #69 Com Ga Chien Xa Ot (chicken breast fried with spicy lemon grass - see picture). It was good, but both of us would have preferred a bit more spice, as we ended up adding Siracha at the table. I was considering #99 Banh Xeo Vietnamese style crispy pancake stuffed with shrimp, pork & veggies based on the menu picture, but Archie talked me into #97 Banh Tam Bi Xiu Mai udon noodles with shredded pork, steamed pork meatballs and veggies instead (see picture). I was impressed with the coconut milk and lemon sauce that he poured over it when served with the instructions to stir it all together - very tasty combination of savory, sweet and tart, with a very slight spiciness. Our table ordered the bún bò Huế, brisket pho, shaking beef, and a vermicelli bowl. The food was, at best, below average. The bún bò Huế was especially disappointing--it had an overwhelmingly fishy flavor and was extremely heavy on the shrimp paste, making it difficult to enjoy. The bigger issue, however, was the service. When ordering the bún bò Huế, I specifically requested no pork hock and no pork blood tofu. While eating, I found what appeared to be pork blood tofu. When I brought it to the server's attention, he went back to inspect the bowl and then informed me it was actually ham. I explained that I had requested the pork items be omitted. His response was that I "didn't say no ham." The problem is that ham was never listed as an ingredient on the menu. He even brought the menu over to prove it was listed, only for the menu to confirm that it wasn't. Rather than acknowledging the misunderstanding, he continued to argue that I should have known to ask for no ham. If an ingredient isn't disclosed on the menu, how would a customer know to request it be removed? A much better response would have been to ask whether I also wanted the ham omitted when I requested the other pork ingredients be left out. Mistakes happen, but how they're handled matters. Instead of trying to make it right, the staff became defensive and argumentative. That left a much worse impression than the food itself. I rarely leave negative reviews, but this was an experience I won't be repeating. I would not return.

It's a small mom and pop shop, so much so, pop was the sole soldier working the entire front of the house. As such, don't expect super fast service, but good service nonetheless. We started with the fresh spring rolls, which were good, and their fried egg rolls, which I probably won't order again. The egg rolls were pretty much veggies, loosely filled, and served with a sweet and sour type dipping sauce. It was more of an Americanized Chinese style egg roll, not a Vietnamese cha gio with nouc cham. I ordered the pho dac biet and it was VERY good. The large is HUGE. Most places back home have suffered from shrink-flation and large bowls are tiny now. Not this place, I struggled to finish the bowl. You walk in and it's a typical mom and pop Asian restaurant. It's crowded with almost every table full at 1pm. The front is staffed with 2 workers going as fast as they can. I was amazed at the variety of Vietnamese dishes this place served. It went far beyond your bowl of pho and grilled pork on rice. They had hot pot and family style fried fish, caramelized catfish, and sweet and sour soup to go with a bowl of rice. The server was friendly and the food came out fast once we placed our order. We started with the spring rolls which had a good amount of shrimp and pork paired with a peanut sauce. Pretty satisfied with this appetizer. We then had the banh hoi or woven vermicelli with crispy pork belly. This was swerved with a plate of mint, cilantro, lettuce, and a couple of other greens that I don't know the names of. The pork was perfect and crisp. Noodles were warm and when wrapped with the pork veggies and dipped in nuoc Cham(dipping sauce), every bite had you going back for more. I love an interactive dish that takes some assembly. Next was the rice paper salad, which wasn't on the menu, but I showed them a picture from Yelp, and he said they had it! This was my first time trying this dish and it was a plateful of so many savory flavors. Every flavor meshed so well together as well as the textures. Highly recommend this one. The pork was seasoned and grilled to perfection lined with sides of cucumber, pickled daikon and carrots, and lettuce. Nuoc Cham was perfectly mixed as well. Overall, one of the better Vietnamese places I've tried in the US. Probably the best in the Midwest. Would come here every day if I lived in the area. I was highly satisfied.
