It comes with a heaping plate of bean sprouts, jalapeños, limes, and cilantro you can put into the pho, as well as some chili garlic oil and another teriyaki-ish type sauce. Time to update my review. I was craving Pho. I know that this is the best place in Ankeny for me to kill the craving. Walked in on a early evening and got the last table available. Greeted warmly by a young man who sat us. Another young lady came and got our drink orders. Tvs are on at both ends of the small restaurant but not turned up. Music plays from the overhead speakers. I ordered us the shrimp spring rolls. I just love soaking them in the peanut sauce that comes with them. I ordered the small well done brisket and tendon. Yum. Pho comes with a plate of basil leaves, jalapeños and, bean spouts to add to your broth as you want. It comes out hot and delicious. Hubby got the chicken pad tai. He liked it. Nice place to visit. Friday at 615 it was about 75% full but we found a seat quickly. We were served water immediately and had an appetizer of spring rolls that came quick. I visited Pho 85 for the first time on Saturday a little before noon, not too long after they opened. Once I got inside, I was immediately greeted and sat down. The layout is consistent with many pho restaurants, but what set this place apart was how clean and well-organized it was. Even as the lunch rush began to pick up, it didn't feel cramped or overcrowded. Restrooms were very clean too. I ordered a large rare steak and meatball pho. They have small, medium and large, and have display bowls for you to make the appropriate choice. I also ordered a Thai tea. The pho and Thai tea came out within 10 minutes or so. There was a generous helping of pho and a side plate of fresh bean sprouts, Thai basil, lime and jalapeños. I especially appreciate how they did not skimp on the toppings (some places aren't as generous and may even charge for extra). The pho broth was hot and fresh, there was a generous helping of steak and meatballs, and the noodles were cooked perfectly. The flavor was amazing. The best pho I've had in a long time. The Thai tea was the delicious, too. I had more than enough pho to take home. I also had some trouble putting my pho in the to go container (even made a bit of a mess) and a staff member quickly rushed over to help and was so gracious about it. Overall, I would recommend this place to anyone. I definitely plan to visit again and hopefully take advantage of some of their other menu options. Pho 85, located in a small plaza in Ankeny, is a nice little joint for pho and other Vietnamese food. I've been coming here for a few years now, but have only recently visited again after a couple years away. The pho is good. It gets the job done and has good flavor. Noodles seem to stick together a little too much but not too big of a deal. Again, the flavor is where it makes its name. In my opinion, needs very little extra flavoring, but I do love my fish sauce. The included tendon is also great. Not sure you'll find better tendon than here. Also had the boba tea but I've had much better elsewhere. Also, the bahn mi sandwiches seemed lacking. I'm sure there's other good items on the menu, but I personally just stick to the pho. Service is really nice, attentive, and quick. Came in for a quick lunch and I was in and out in maybe 20 minutes. Overall, I'd recommend if already in the area and craving pho. My husband and I stopped here on our way through town. It's not far from the interstate, which was convenient. We ordered spring rolls, a pork bahn mi, and a bowl of seafood rice noodle soup. The spring rolls were perfect, fresh, and delicious. The soup was pretty boring in my opinion. My husband loves light seafood soups, so he really enjoyed it. To me, it was incredibly bland. Unlike pho, the broth had basically no flavor. The seafood included two over cooked shrimp, one mussel, two squid rings, a few pieces of imitation crab meat, two fish meatballs, and some noodles. I added sriracha and hoisin but it was still too boring of a soup for me. The best part was the fish meatballs and there just weren't enough of them. The pork bahn mi was easily one of the best I have ever had, even though it was really tiny. The pork was piled high and accompanied by fresh veggies. It was seriously so good that I only ate a tiny bowl of the bland soup and ordered a second bahn mi that I wouldn't have to share with my husband. My husband generally needs convincing to try somewhere new so I was pretty excited when he agreed to go! I have the combination vermicelli noodle bowl and pork dumplings, while my husband had the vermicelli noodle bowl with chicken and Vietnamese egg rolls plus a Vietnamese coffee. I really enjoyed my food and my husband said he would go back! I am very new to pho and Vietnamese food in general so I was taken aback by the lettuce..but rolled with it. Because my partner had recent dental surgery, we stumbled in here looking for a good bowl of soup. To say it was "good" would do a disservice to Pho. The soups were amazing and enough in a small bowl to feed me for two full meals. The service was quick. The only obstacle appeared to be a bit of a language barrier when ordering green tea. Instead of getting a hot green tea, we ended up with one of their iced drinks made with green tea. It was a happy mistake because the concoction was delicious. HONEST REVIEW I've given this place 4 or 5 chances and I've decided to not come back unless they figure out whether they will change their false advertising and provide a better service. This place looks authentic and sadly disappoints on that front for many reasons. 1. Pho is great! Nice broth and great meat. Great portion size. Sadly the topping and fillings for meat are DISAPPOINTING. No chili paste available, only oil and sriracha No basil available No culantro available No bird/Thai fresh chilis available (not jalapeños) When I asked for these things I got, "you have cilantro and chili oil." And then she walked away. 2. Ordered the muscles... don't do it. They came grilled with nothing else. No lemon/lime No chili sauce No fresh chilis No green onions No fried shallot No peanuts Big disappointment and almost unbelievable. 3. Ordered the iced coffee Arrived and looked wonderful Coffee wouldn't get through the strainer and neither would the water so I was left with condensed milk and ice with a drip or two of coffee. What a waste of money. This specifically happened on each time I came and each waitress noticed it and didn't say anything. 4. Ordered the spring roll/summer roll/egg roll and even once ordered the appetizer combo. Comes dry on a plate. Period. No noodles No lettuce No chilis This is when I said I've had enough. How can you not even provide a piece of lettuce?? I'm just confused. PLEASE do not show a plate with fresh and beautiful looking food and then deliver me a bowl of dog food. In conclusion: Left a tip each time for their fast service. Good pho. Do not come here if you want toppings or fresh VEGETABLES OR CONDIMENTS. Decided to give this place a try last night and was disappointed with the quality and taste. We ordered the cream cheese wantons and rare steak and brisket pho. The wantons are on par with Hy-Vee Chinese. they were terrible. We left half of them on the plate. The pho was almost edible. The broth was just ok and while most pho places give you very little meat, Pho 85 gives you a ton of giant pieces of flavorless meat. I had to literally take each piece of meat out and tear it up into bite sized pieces. I ended up giving up and left half the bowl on the table. Also, this the first time I wasn't served mint leaves with Pho. Kinda weird. If you want good Pho, go to Aroy-Dee, Nut Pob, or Pho Real. There Pho is awesome and crab Rangoon are amazing. read more

It's been years since I've been to this restaurant. It has been sold a couple times and the last time I tried it, they were horrible. Both the food and the service. A friend invited us out to dinner and chose this place. I'm happy that I didn't try to change their minds. The current ownership has made this a pretty good Vietnamese restaurant. The Pho was flavorful and aromatic. The portions were generous. The spring rolls were tightly rolled and had a good mix of noodles and protein. What I really loved was the number of Vietnamese customers that they had. It shows that the food must be good if you have the same ethnicity eating at your restaurant. Pretty standard Asian Pho restaurant, offers the usual Vietnamese dishes. Calm atmosphere and never too busy. Food is good, same as most Pho places, nothing extraordinary. I have tried the Pho, Bun Mi sandwiches,and most appetizers from here and they are all good as other Asian restaurants. The staff is very friendly, not a long wait for the food to come out. Before leaving Iowa and started my 3 1/2 hour drive south to back Kansas City on the I-35, I stopped off here in Ankeny, IA for my 50 States Pho challenge, where I would attempt to have a bowl of Pho in all the states. Thankful for Yelp, I spotted Pho 85 here in Ankeny for my Pho for the state of Iowa. There was a few choices in Des Moines, but after a couple of hours in Ames having barbecue, I figured I can at least have a small bowl of Pho and can count it towards the total tallies. Still in Central Iowa and that was important for real. With that said, Pho 85 was formerly Pho K&K, but renamed recently. The typical Vietnamese restaurant set up was in play and I was happy that I was having Pho yet again. The restaurant itself was clean in general and the service was typically average of such establishments. Grateful as always to enjoy Pho when you can have it. Pho 85 is located at 1701 SE Delaware Avenue in Ankeny, IA. Since Pho 85 is part of a small strip mall on South Delaware Avenue, there isn't too much parking, but just come as you are, and you should be okay. My first glance here is that this is a typical Vietnamese restaurant. Only thing is that it's in central Iowa. You don't normally see this kind of stuff, but I am happy that they are here. The restaurant is very clean, but they do have a few televisions to keep everyone occupied. While you may think more than 1 TV is distracting, it's probably better for them to function as a sports bar than that of a Vietnamese restaurant. The ambiance of the restaurant is very quiet and casual. Something I do enjoy while having my Pho here. The prices here are reasonable, serving up Pho for under $10, which is fantastic. They accept credit cards, which is awesome and always a plus. The service I received here has been good. They pay attention to your needs and gave you a smile, since you are there having fun. They refill your water several times during the course of the meal, which was nice. I ordered the medium Pho #7, the rare steak, brisket, and tripe, along with vegetable egg rolls, but that was put in to-go boxes for later. It took about 10 minutes for the Pho to arrive, with the veggie egg rolls came out first. I held off on eating those rolls and asked for a box when my Pho + veggies arrived. They were so accommodating that it was just a perfect meal here. The Pho itself was delicious, although you could kind of tell that the broth was a wee bit watered down. Still fine though. The overall experience was nice and pleasant. Definitely a good day when it came to Pho and thank Yelp for helping me find this place while I was on the road in between Kansas City, Des Moines, and Ames without having to make a serious detour. It used to be good, but going downhill. I went there on my birthday with a take out order, which they messed up the first time. Paid for the second with tip and left. Got back and opened that bag, not what I ordered. Took it back and asked for a refund and they refused. They said I could go to Wal Mart and look for their boss, or wait there for 30 minutes. I just wanted a refund, get food someplace, and move on with my day. They refused. I will never go back. The kids that work there are super cool, but they have bad attitudes there. I was definitely caught off guard when I saw the words on the door saying that it was Vietnamese, Thai, and Chinese food. I was looking forward to eating just authentic Vietnamese food. Thankfully the food was pretty good. I got a medium sized bowl of pho with the well done brisket and flank and the combination meat and rice platter. I loved the flavoring of both of the dishes. The only downside to the pho was the meat to noodle ratio wasn't there, there was definitely not enough meat and a lot of noodles. And for the rice and meat platter, the meat was too thinly sliced so the meat was dry. But other than that, the food was good and the place was clean! read more

Unfortunately we really did not enjoy our meal. I had never had pho before, but I've heard raving reviews. One day I decided it was time to try this new cuisine. I should have played it safe as I felt really uneasy from all of the menu descriptions. Rare steak and tripe should have been signs to me that I was out of my league. I decided on the "well done brisket" noodle soup. The brisket was fatty, and as picky as I am with beef I really didn't care for the flavor of the meat. I tried to mask the harsh beef flavor with all of the accompaniments they proved. Sadly, I couldn't get through much of it. I immediately realized that I made a bad choice for my taste buds and food preferences. I also decided to try a hyped mango "bubble" tea with boboa. These are not like the little pearls you get with your fro yo. They were off-putting and chewy. I avoided them entirely. My boyfriend got the pad thai, which he said was just ok. We were warmly greeting by all and were seated just far enough away from others for a one table conversation but lose enough to feel comfortable in starting a conversation with others, which is exactly what we did! Not made by Vietnamese people - Chinese employees We came here looking for authentic food and left disappointed. Don't get me wrong, I understand that this place is located in a small Iowa town, but even after taking that into consideration, this was by far the worst "Vietnamese" food I've ever had. The food was bland and greasy, the boba drink was too tough (maybe the beans weren't soaked overnight long enough), and the service was poor. We weren't greeted until after we had already cleaned our table, grabbed our own menus, and waited for others who came in AFTER US to be served. I got the 1C rice plate and my parents got the 6KS shrimp fried rice and #9 pho. All of our dishes were flavorless, which is pretty impressive, if I'm being honest. The meat on my plate (pork chop, chicken breast, shrimp, and beef) were all sliced extremely thin. I've had bacon cut thicker than my pork chop lol. The worst part is that everything we had tasted bland and oily. If you have low standards for Asian food, this could pass as edible, but if you're looking for good food, don't go here. read more
