Always an interesting visit. They have the largest carrots I've ever seen. Largest by a huge margin

Always enjoy my visits. I pickup something interesting every time I visit. I highly recommend this place

I flew in from San Francisco, California yesterday. Came here to see my daughter up for her kitchen for her college years here. Excellent choices for all your international Asian needs. They have everything you would find in SF Chinatown including how to set up your ancestral worshipping area!

Your A and B are getting old, but you've managed to keep your C Fresh. What a cool grocery store! It has all kinds of businesses inside it, including a really great Vietnamese place which is better than most Viet restaurants. Prices are cheap and if you are looking for Asian Goods in Des Moines then this is definitely a cool place to come and shop. And even though I do think cleaning up air pollution is a priority, I hope we can manage to keep the Sea Fresh too.

I've been meaning to come here for awhile now, and I am SOOOOOO glad that I did! Even at 11:30 on a weekday, the parking lot was jam packed. I think this place gets a ton of business. Walking in, you're greeted by shiny waving fortune cats, fresh bread on a cart and international candy. The place is huge! There are tons and tons of obscure fresh vegetables and fruit, most of which you either 1) can't find anywhere else in Des Moines, or 2) if you can find it elsewhere, C Fresh has a nicer price. They have a massive box of fresh ginger for $0.99 per pound. They have durian and jackfruit, lychee, extra long green beans, all sorts of exotic raddish and cabbage. I swear I must have looked like I had dropped acid to go to the grocery store because I was slack-jawed with joy over all the stuff I was seeing. I also skipped, don't judge me. They have fresh and frozen meat and seafood, roasted ducks hanging by their necks, an entire cooked pig's head, all kinds of pickled things and gallon jars of kimchi, an entire row of nothing but different types of fried onions, I could go on and on and on. The best part though? There's a restaurant inside. The best part about the restaurant? It gave me hands down on the floor THE best pad Thai I have ever had in my entire life. There is no close second, not even from back in Los Angeles, and I say that with no hesitation. The portion was really big, but sometimes I have a hollow leg and today it was beating me over the head with itself. I ate the whole plate of pad Thai and I don't even feel bad about it. Everything that everyone around me had delivered to their table looked just as good and I can't wait to try more stuff here. This place is my new favorite thing. The end.

I recently saw the former Top Value Foods store replaced with a new kind of Supermarket, and I had to visit! Now there is an Asian market just up the road from this one, but this building is much more modern and has a more open environment, whereas the one up the road shows some age. I think that this store fits better than Top Value because of it's diverse demographic in the area. Plus, it's nice to see a supermarket where "WIC Accepted" and "We take Food Stamps" aren't plastered all over the windows to pull customers in. No matter what kind of neighborhood the store is in, it just makes the customer feel cheap when going to that kind of store. NOW, to the actual review. I walked in and was overwhelmed by the smell of fish. I don't know if they just didn't invest in exhaust fans for the store, but man, did it smell rank in there! Now, the selection of merchandise was quite extravagant, ranging from Asian to Italian to Mexican to everyday staples such as cereal, soup and canned vegetables. I also saw live crayfish for the first time...I was intrigued, but weirded out at the same time, if that makes sense. You're going to have to go in for yourself to walk through the aisles to see all they have! When I visited, the deli was closed for the night, so I didn't get to see what they had to offer. Other than the smell, the store was clean and organized, except in the corner near the meat department where a lot of Asian general merchandise was strung about (I think this is where Chinese Buffet owners buy their dinnerware). Up front next to the checkouts, there was a Jewelry repair, travel agent and salon, which I take were also owned by the same owners as the market. Customer service was average. There were these rice bars I saw on the bakery table up front, and I asked the woman at the Customer Service desk how they tasted, but I don't think she understood me...I ended up asking some customers nearby, and they were pretty helpful. I don't judge other people for not knowing English, but it would be helpful. The checkout clerk looked like she was friendly enough. Will I visit here again? Of course, I will! I thought the store was cool, but I am one to admit that I am uneducated on international foods. The items I bought were pretty good, but I'll try something different next time I visit. If the owners of this store are reading this, I would suggest investing in exhaust fans so the smell isn't so heavily fumigated throughout the store. This store will earn five stars if they fix that.

Probably the only place in des Moines where you can get a whole deep fat fried pigs head

Great Asian market. You can get traditional Asian food items like whole roasted duck and Asian BBQ pork. They have a great lunch counter where you can get an authentic banh mi sandwich for 2.65! Tremendous value. You will really save on traditional asian ingredients here and find items here that are hard to find at other stores.

My GF and I shop here all the time. It's the best Asian market in town. And as I was told by a friend from Vegas, it's very impressive because it's as big as the ones in a big cities. This place has a restaurant inside which cooks very good food. They have a ton of Vietnamese options like Pho and Bun Mi, and they also have roasted duck and many other delicious foods. The market itself has everything you can wish for from an Asian market and more. What's really impressive is their prices. Their fresh veggies are a fraction of the cost at a regular store. It's like $1 here vs $5 at Hy-Vee. They also have a large butcher shop that also has many seafood options they they will even clean and cook for you. All said and done, this place is awesome. Even if you a white boy like me, you will find plenty of items here to buy. I recommend this place to anyone that doesn't only eat fish sticks and French fries. If you are one of those people, then get out of your box and eat some beef tendon or some squid you corn fed mama's boy.

One of the cleanest Asian stores I have ever been to. They are a very well-run store and have a vast diversity of customers. Their customers are not only Asian, which is very rare to see for an Asian store. One of the reasons must be because they do not have a full Asian staff to reflect the diversity of their customer base. I have entered here countless times to both shop and eat at their cafe. Their food is amazing, I mainly focus on their pho and egg rolls which are both made restaurant quality and cheap. This is definitely my go-to Asian store in town. Parking is easy, very big lot. Although there are many customers, the store does not feel cramped due to their size.

1/4 of the rice noodle options, which are completely GF.

Went to Pho 515 and decided to walk off some calories and check out the market. They have so many things packed into this place. Tableware, cookware, produce, fresh fish & meats, goods, etc. It's an international market, so it's not just Asian cuisine - though most of it is. They have so many rice noodles, a Celiac like me could never die unhappy. Amazingly reasonable prices for bulk foods and produce. The old fashioned sodas and candies are a very nice touch, the old fashioned prices are too! The only issue we had was the very strong smell of fish. The fish market is located in the back and is an open-style, we'd just eaten and weren't expecting it but it's a very cool feature here. I bought 2 10-pack Melamine chopsticks, a bag of candy & a bottle of Cholula for $9.53. Totally a cool place to walk around after eating some pho or bun!

I hate to admit this... I've lived in the Des Moines IA metro since 1992 and this was my first…read morevisit to B&B Grocery. Pretty shameful on my part considering the shop was first opened by the Brooks family in 1922... I'm not a big fan of downtown, but B&B isn't quite as downtown as I thought. More Southside. The store is a definitely mom and pop. There's a small lot to park in just off of Hartford Ave and there is additional street parking available. You enter by the grocery area. There's a counter and register kind of to your Left as you walk in. You walk past the counter and you will see the sandwich and meat counter further to your left. For sandwiches you walk to the furthest end of the counter where the sandwich menu is hanging and place your order. When your food is ready they call it out by the items in the order. Payment is done at the counter and register back towards the front of the store. First off the food was great! No complaints. The selection is HUGE... Something like 74 sandwiches available to order and a nice selection of sides. I took my order to go, but there is limited seating available for dine in too. I ordered an extra large breaded pork tenderloin with onions, pickles, and mustard. An order of hot cheeseballs (comes with ranch). And a dad's killer sandwich (cold). My total came to just around $30. Cash preferred. 2.5% surcharge for using a card. The tenderloin reminded me of Chuckie's and that puts it in good company. A little thicker and on a proportional bun. Similar breading. The cheeseballs were fresh out of the fryer and the ranch is fantastic; made in house I assume. The meat and the vegetables on the deli sandwich were impressively fresh. The real star here to me was service! As I walked in one of the staff had two young girls by a board with some toys and jewelry on it. He was counting down as they studied the board. The girls were laughing as they were deciding on a choice. Some sort of giveaway game for kids they do when they have time I assume... I was greeted immediately as I walked up to order. There were three or so people waiting for their food. Placing an order was easy. I'd looked at the menu online and kind of already knew what I wanted, but it was still fun to look over the colorful boards and signage. They were busy working on their tasks but there was some cordial banter back and forth. The wait was short and there are plenty of things to keep you visually occupied here too. Everything was individually wrapped and taped up in butcher's paper. As I took my items all three gentlemen behind the sandwich and meat counter thanked me for coming in. When was the last time that happened to you at a big box store...? I'm not an introvert... I struck up a conversation with another customer and the woman at the register as I was paying. The other patron and I stood outside and talked for a bit. We were about the same age I think...he might have been a skosh older...mid-50s to early 60s. He was the one who told me how long the store had been open, the family name, and that he had been brought/coming here since he was three years old. Said his mom still calls it Brooks Grocery (v. B&B)... Not that I couldn't have found all that online, but I'm not one to shy away from a friendly visit of any kind. I mentioned to him that I found the customer service here to be a really refreshing thing. He said he thought the three gentlemen helping us had been there maybe 15 years or so. A handshake and thank you and we were both on our way. Can't say enough about my visit to B&B Grocery today! Friendly service and great food! Fair pricing. Don't make my same mistake... Apparently, most people don't know that USDA Choice is the same as what is available at just about any supermarket. If you are looking for grass-fed beef or even organic beef, maybe you can find it but I didn't see any. The labeling also needs help. I wanted some salmon, but all their sign said was "salmon." No Coho, Atlantic, or Steelhead, just "salmon." No farm-raised or wild-caught, just "salmon". when I asked that pretty basic question the counterman said that he didn't know, and had to go to the back & ask someone whose response was "farm-raised from Chile". This place is good for one thing: If you are having a BBQ or a Super Bowl party and you want a quick & easy one-stop shop instead of running around a grocery store trying to find everything you need. It's relatively very small and You can find lots of beer, liquor, BBQ sauce, and even a bit of fresh produce & baked goods all within about a half dozen short aisles. Sadly, other than that, there isn't much reason to go there.
